If you’re terrified that your Kinect is beaming your sensitive habits into space, Paul Harper has just the device for you.
Microsoft’s Kinect device is capable of reading human movements, understanding 3D space and a whole host of other cool things (as evidenced by the modding community). It’s also, apparently, quite handy as a clandestine advertising tool.
Dennis Durkin, vice president of Microsoft’s gaming division, noted a couple of years back that the Kinect could potentially be used to gather information for advertisers. For example, the device could read recognizable product logos in your home and use that data to put together a tailored ad package based on your habits.
It’s pretty intrusive stuff, and even if Microsoft hasn’t taken advantage of the technology yet, there’s always the possibility they could. Which is why Paul Harper has invented the Pritect. It’s not particularly advanced—just a black cover you slip over your Kinect when you’re not using it to bust moves. The cover stops the device from pulling data, and protects it from dust buildup.
If you’re the type of person that’s concerned over Microsoft tracking your out-of-game habits, you can pick up a Pritect for $14.99.
Alternatively, you could stop acting crazy.

EA notes that vitriol from players regarding its unnecessary Origin software is on the decline, and asks for a two-year window to make the service useful.
Origin is a piece of shit. What’s worse, it’s an unnecessary piece of shit. What Origin stumbles through, Steam already had mastered. And the only reason Origin even exists at this point is EA stripping its games from a far superior digital distribution platform and forcing a proprietary service down everyone’s throats. It’s nothing less than a digital coup, and an ugly one at that.
Origin has, naturally, seen its fair share of hate. Most of this hate stems from feelings like those mentioned above, with a bit left over for the terrible customer service offered by the platform. However, EA sees a few rays of light poking through the hate clouds. Chief operating officer Peter Moore, who is largely responsible for the existence of Origin, believes that the software is just a couple of years away from being truly wonderful.
Moore stated that EA is looking for ways to make Origin more social and more interactive, as opposed to just a pipeline for the company to shovel games at players (at exorbitant prices). He also noted that criticism of the platform has mostly died down, and that gamers are learning to embrace Origin’s special brand of online functionality. Hey, when you make something mandatory, how can people not learn to use it?
His comments are actually sort of hilarious—Moore claims that the healthiest decision for the industry is providing players with a way to “shop around” on various services, while his company simultaneously pulls all of its games off competitor’s platforms. Nice one, EA. Regardless  of the hypocrisy, Moore does make a smart point when he says the service needs a couple of years; there’s no telling whether Origin will be better or worse in 2014.
What do you think of Origin? Do you see it as one more gaming tool on your PC, or an unwanted and forced intrusion by a greedy company?

Ó

For an MMORPG game that was released in May 2003, EVE Developers continue to surprise with just how in touch with their player base they are!
A few of the move 'technical savvy' EVE players found a way to edit a few of EVE's client files , enabling them to watch their own video files, in game, on the Captain's Quarters screen.
Mostly, developers loathe the idea of outsiders fiddling and poking around in their game code, so it would only be natural to see this hole patched up right away, perhaps even a short server takedown to right the wrong? Right?? Wrong!
EVE developers decided that this was a great opportunity for some proactive development PR. There decision? Let's just make the whole process even easier.
According to the EVE developer blog:
"The hack was as easy as replacing a .BIK (BINK) video file with one of your own .BIK files, putting you in charge of what’s on TV"
They now provide three easy steps to getting your own video files up on your captains quarters screen for some serious in game sofa surfing.
Instructions from the EVE Developer blog
1. Download the BINK(.BIK) video conversion tool from here:http://www.radgametools.com/down/Bink/RADTools.exe. Using this tool, you should be able to convert most of your videos to BINK format, which is the industry standard when it comes to video playback in videogames. I recommend starting the first conversion process straight away since it may take a while.
2. Locate your EVE cache folder by following the guide found here:http://support.eveonline.com/Pages/KB/Article.aspx?id=371. Create a folder under your cache folder called “CQScreenVideos” if it doesn’t already exist.
3. Once a video has been converted to BINK format, copy it to the “CQScreenVideos” folder.
In a time where MMORPG developers are all looking to squeeze the most out of their product for as long as they can, it's refreshing to see that despite its age, EVE continues to do the simple things right... Like listening to the players!
Know any other dev team that could take a page out of this book?  Let us know your thoughts.

Ó

When Activision announced that they will be dropping support for the Guitar Hero franchise, not too many people were surprised by it. While many people figured it's just run its natural course, truth is, Activision just sort of came to a point where it neglected it.
This much was confirmed by no less than CEO Bobby Kotick, describing it as a "misplaced passion".
"Guitar Hero had enormous success," started Kotick. "After a few iterations of the game it became one of the most successful games of all time. And then we didn't really take the time that we usually take to understand audience behavior."
"It was one of those things where we were resting on the idea that one of the essential fantasies of video games is to unleash your inner rock star. So we went off on a passion project that had a point of differentiation -- which is called DJ Hero."
It just so happened that there a lot of people wanted to tap into their inner DJs. "And then out of the people who do want to unleash their inner DJ," continued Kotick, ""how many want to do it in the context of a game where you earn points, versus just taking a DJ deck or tools on their Macintosh and actually being a DJ? And it turns out it's a very small market."
It becomes a problem when not that much people actually do something to unleash that said inner DJ. "When you put your heart and soul into it and you deliver an extraoridnarily well received game, and nobody shows up to buy it... that's what happened with DJ Hero. At the same time we were so excited about going down this new direction with DJ Hero, I think we abandoned a bit of the innovation that was required in the Guitar Hero Franchise."
I guess what that simply translates to is that much more people would want into their inner Rockstars than they would their inner DJs.
Bizarre Games, under Activision's tutelage, recently shut down. The publisher has also previously reassured fans of the Call of Duty franchise that it will not end up the Guitar Hero did.

Many fans were aghast at the prospect that Uncharted 3 will not have its own dedicated servers, and will instead have to rely on peer-to-peer connections. To allay your concerns, Naughty Dog has spoken out about it.
This desire to explain came up when a disappointed player, trying out the game's multiplayer beta, raised his issues directly to the publisher via Twitter. Here is Naughty Dog's response:
"We're not going to have dedicated servers, made that decision long time ago + we built current player host-client architecture. Decision for that server architecture was to be better able to support our fans long-term if we can/want.
The cost delta between dedicated & non-dedicated is huge long term. Eventually someone will say it costs too great + shut them down. My personal hope is that by keeping costs down + strong enough community, we could be in a position to consider 4+ yrs of uptime."
It kind of makes you wonder why Naughty Dog would even think of taking out an essential tool to make sure that gamers experience the game flawlessly for the purpose of cutting down costs. With the success of the past two iterations of the franchise, you'd think they'd be able to afford a basic gaming need such as dedicated servers. Hopefully, this doesn't hurt the game too much.
Oh, but wait. Maybe if it does, then they'll reconsider. Uncharted 3 comes out November 1st for North America, and Europe recently got their date moved up to November 2nd, positioning the game for a near-simultaneous launch.

Publisher EA has set their eyes on the competition, and they've named it to be Activision.
Since they're coming out with Battlefield 3, they've thereby proclaimed Modern Warfare 3 as the obvious competition for it. EA president Frank Gibeau proclaimed that it's "going into a heavyweight fight" with MW3, that Battlefield 3 is, definitely.
And although MW3 may have a "25 million head start", Gibeau remains confident that their game will be able to offer "a generational breakthrough in terms of technology."
Another thing they're looking forward to is the alternation of their franchises so that they can go head to head with the annual CoD franchise. "Battlefield and Medal of Honor will be a part of a rotation that we go after the shooter category with... the Medal of Honor and Battlefield teams are now operating in the same group together so they can share tools, technologies, innovations, without feeling like the same games."
"We have a [Battlefield 3] team that's been together for ten years. The Medal of Honor team was fairly new, they were using middleware and software that had already been out there, so... They're a great team, and we're going to continue to invest in them, but we're going to approach it slightly different than we did before."

It took the developers of L.A. Noire a gruelling five years to pull it off and get it on retail shelves. For part 2, however, they're guaranteeing that it won't be taking as long anymore.
What will they do differently this itme, then? Accordin to Brendan McNamara, from Sony's old studio, Team Soho, it won't be taking as long because the technology is already set in its place.
"Obviously, the Motion Scan technology for capturing actors works and exists and other video game people are using that today, so that's there and available and quick. We developed a lot of tools to make this kind of game, so I think that part of it will be shorter. The writing part you can't really make any shorter. You can make it shorter than five years, but we've also now started working on technology for full body capture."
The full body capture technology he's talking about should be ready in a couple more years. Having it around means actors will be wearing costumes, give their performances like they would for TV or film, and then have it recorded by. "We'll be able to drop that performance in a video game, which will be pretty amazing."
He also stressd that it was their studio's goal to break away from the stereotypical mode of video games, which are to present 2D cutouts and have one liner dialogues. "Generally video game characters  are 2D cutouts that carry big guns and do one liners. So to bring that degree of humanity to these characters was a big goal for the game."
L.A. Noire released for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC last week.
