Well folks, the time has finally come to “Take Earth back.” And you can bet we here at QJ will spend most of next week (and the week after) doing just that. However, just because Bioware’s epic conclusion to the Commander Shepard storyline drops on Tuesday doesn’t mean it’s the only game in the known universe. Other games are coming out as well.

EA’s marketing blitz rolls on with the latest ad for Mass Effect 3.
Another day, another trailer for Mass Effect 3. However, the offering we have today isn’t merely some re-cut, extended version of a trailer we’ve already seen—it’s an all-new , (semi) live-action trailer featuring crying people, barking dogs, looting and most of the other stuff you’d expect to see as a result of an ongoing Reaper invasion.
You can watch the trailer right here:
One thing that’s notable about this particular trailer is that it doesn’t focus much on Commander Shepard or his/her crew. And while there’s value to showing the more human side of the conflict that unfolds in the game, it’s a curious decision to remove Shepard and the other stars of the game from the equation besides a bit of blurry running and shooting.
What did you think of the trailer? Will it inspire new Mass Effect 3 sales?

A producer on Mass Effect 3 drops a not-so-subtle hint about the future of the franchise.
Mass Effect 3 is rolling on toward its official launch date of March 6, and despite the fact that the third chapter of the Commander Shepard saga has yet to hit shelves, EA and Bioware are already stirring up hype for the next game. Of course, the two companies haven’t made any sort of official announcements, but one producer offered a tongue-in-cheek hint to Mass Effect fans everywhere.
In an interview with Gamerzines, producer Mike Gamble simply said that hanging on to your Mass Effect 3 saves “wouldn’t be a bad idea.” He was mum on why exactly players would want to hang onto their saves, but suggesting they keep them handy is practically a confirmation of another game in the works.
With Mass Effect, players are invited to import their character saves from previous games. Decisions you make in Mass Effect, for example, have a lasting impact on the world you encounter in Mass Effect 2. And when you import your character from ME2 into ME3, you’ll be bringing two games’ worth of decisions along with you.
The suggestion that players hang onto their game saves indicates there will be another opportunity to import data, perhaps in a fourth Mass Effect title. The thought of bringing the decisions of three games forward sounds daunting enough from a player perspective – it’s hard to imagine how Bioware could even begin writing the damn thing.
Do you want more Mass Effect?

I’m Commander Shepard, and this is my favorite news post on the Citadel.
If you played the original Mass Effect, you likely spend countless hours wandering around the Citadel and interacting with the NPCs that lived there. The Citadel seemed like a huge part of the game, even (spoiler alert) serving as the backdrop to the final showdown between Shepard’s crew and the game’s villain.
But between Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, something seemed to change with the Citadel. Beyond giving a casual endorsement to every store in the Citadel and a few minor quests, there just didn’t seem to be much to do there. It certainly wasn’t the fully realized, interactive environment it had been before. Apparently, this wasn’t Bioware’s original intention.
In an interview with OXM, Mass Effect’s lead writer Mac Walters indicated that one of the biggest storylines involving Mass Effect 2’s Citadel actually ended up being cut from the game. The plot apparently had something to do with the events of the first game, and the Citadel’s involvement. This content has been stapled into Mass Effect 3, so hopefully the Citadel will be a touch more interesting this time around.
Walters also made comments regarding how hard it is to write a game in which several, or all previous characters can be dead, alive, or spurned. I certainly don’t envy the task. You can see the full interview right here.

Commander Shepard’s last hurrah has the bonuses to match in this special edition of the game.
Hey, do you like Mass Effect? If so, you’re probably excited about the next entry in the franchise, Mass Effect 3. And if you needed reason to be a little more excited, why, we have just the thing for you. It’s the Mass Effect 3 N7 Collector’s Edition, and it comes with all the accoutrements you’ve come to expect from slightly larger boxes that contain video games and other stuff.
Check it out:
The pack only runs $79.99, which is pretty fair considering some of the other CE nonsense we’ve seen in recent months (Skyrim, I’m looking at you). For an extra $20, here’s what you can expect to find in your ME3 box, straight from Bioware:
• Premium metal case featuring commemorative artwork of Commander Shepard.
• 70-page hardbound art book featuring hundreds of unique and gorgeous illustrations from the BioWare development team.
• Limited edition Mass Effect comic by Dark Horse Comics, complete with unique cover artwork.
• Join the ranks of the N7 with the premium fabric N7 patch.
• Exclusive 4x6 lithographic print featuring a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork.
• A full collection of in-game content that can’t be found anywhere else!
• N7 Arsenal Pack – Bring the firepower with the N7 Sniper Rifle, Shotgun, SMG, and Pistol.
• Robotic Dog – A faithful sidekick to keep you company on board the Normandy.
• Squadmate Alternate Outfit Pack – New appearances for your favorite squad members.
• N7 Hoodie – For Commander Shepard’s casual days on board the Normandy.
• Relive all the greatest moments of Mass Effect 3 with the digital soundtrack.
• Xbox LIVE Normandy prop for your Avatar. (Available on Xbox 360 version only.)
• Display your initiation in the N7 ranks with a collection of forum and social badges, avatars, and perks
Bioware says the CE is “limited supply,” but we’ve all seen how that usually plays out. Still, if you want to pick up the game and the extras are your type of thing, you may as well reserve it.
I am!

Valve continues their recent trend of adding ridiculous costumes and hats to Team Fortress 2 with a Saints Row: The Third costume for your Heavy.
There was a time when characters in Team Fortress 2 looked like characters from Team Fortress 2. Nowadays, most TF2 matches play out like a gathering of the “Club for Silly Hats,” which, honestly, makes the game even more fun. Hate on the hats all you want, the same basic gameplay still fuels an engaging and often hilarious experience.
Valve isn’t showing any sign of slowing TF2 accessory development, and has announced this special costume for your Heavy if you pre-order Saints Row on Steam.
If you’ve ever wanted to charge around Dustbowl with a Luchador mask and diamond boxing gloves, this is certainly the pre-order bonus for you. It’s cute to see developers promoting each other’s games – if only more companies could get in on this sort of thing, the whole industry might be a little more fun. After all, who wouldn’t want a Master Chief costume for their Commander Shepard, or a Mario hat for their Drake?
Right?

Earlier in the week, we found out that Bioware’s latest sci-fi RPG would be getting a pre-release demo. Now we have some more info for players that can’t wait to catch up with Commander Shepard and his/her crew.
Mass Effect 3 is easily one of the most anticipated titles of 2012. The first two games were both enormous successes for Bioware and EA, and even if you weren’t stoked on the changes made in Mass Effect 2, it’s still hard to spot a better sci-fi RPG. If you just can’t wait until March to get your hands on Mass Effect 3, you can jump into the pre-release demo starting in January.
The Mass Effect demo will include both single and multiplayer game features, but here’s the catch – in order to qualify for the early access demo, you’ll need to register an online pass from Battlefield 3. This won’t be a problem for the million or so people that have already pre-ordered BF3 and are stoked on playing, but some of those Call of Duty MW3 fans may be upset at the news. It does look like there will be an alternative method for getting in, but it’s not clear quite yet.
Here’s the full post, straight from the Bioware forums:
What are the details of the Mass Effect 3 pre-release demo?
•The Mass Effect 3 pre-release demo will launch in January 2012 (exact date TBA).
•The demo will include both single-player and multi-player sections.
•The demo will be released in all regions where the game is
How can I get early access to the multi-player portion of the Mass Effect 3 demo coming in January 2012?
•Owners of Battlefield 3, on any platform, who activate their Online Pass will automatically be granted early access to the multiplayer portion of the Mass Effect 3 demo. There is no need to enter any other codes, the early access will be applied to the EA Account associated with the Online Pass. Note: BF3 Origin Customers automatically have the BF3 Online Pass.
•This applies to all regions where the demo is released (to be announced)
•The exact date of the demo launch will be announced in late November
•There will be another program whereby players and fans of the Mass Effect franchise can unlock this early access (with no purchase necessary) – this will also be announced in late November or early December.
•There will also be a tool posted on www.masseffect.com allowing players to check if their EA account has been granted the early access.
•The length of the early access period is TBA.
•The single-player section of the demo will be available to all players on day one of the demo launch.
2012 is shaping up to be a massive year for gaming. Mass Effect 3, StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm, BioShock Infinite, Soul Calibur 5 and Final Fantasy XIII-2 are all headed our way in a relatively short period of time, so you’d better finish up your 2011 games fast (Skyrim!).
Are you excited about Mass Effect 3? Will you play the demo, or wait for the full release?

After an insane week of speculation, confirmations, and exclusive confirmations, Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer combat is on full display in this new trailer.
It seems like only yesterday that we were trying to lock down whether or not Mass Effect 3 would actually have multiplayer. Cagey responses from Bioware, leaked magazine covers, supposed quotes from inside the industry and a variety of other bit of information floated around the web for a while, until the developer finally confirmed the presence of multiplayer in this hotly awaited title.
Now, as if to celebrate this information going live, Bioware has graced us with a new trailer featuring some of the multiplayer action we can expect from Mass Effect 3.
The basic gist of the video is that you and your friends will be able to play through parts of the Mass Effect 3 storyline together, acting as a squad and working together to accomplish goals. You’ll also be able to play as characters and races previously unable to you, since the game has revolved exclusively around Commander Shepard.
What’s really interesting is that apparently your actions in multiplayer can have a major impact on the ending of the game. Mass Effect is known for its multiple endings, with the very bad ending of Mass Effect 2 being one of my favorite moments in gaming history. The developer says you can absolutely reach the most successful conclusion in single player, but you can opt to accomplish some of those goals with friends instead.
So, Mass Effect fans – is multiplayer a great addition or an unwelcome distraction?

And here we have more news on the PlayStation Pass. This time, is Mass Effect 3 going to be joining in on the bandwagon, too?
According to a South African retailer, the answer to that would be yes. Their advertisement on the game, so they say, claim that BioWare's space shooter will indeed be carrying the "online multplayer pass" requirement. More specifically said PSN Pass will be included in the Collector's Edition of Mass Effect 3.
Despite this "confirmation" from the retailer, however, we're going to have to tag this under the Rumor category, simply because we still have no official word from the authority that is BioWare.
Earlier this weekend, we also received word that Uncharted 3 will be featuring the PSN Pass. A lot of players are sure to be pissed about this, for sure, but as with any other "required" features for the PS3, we doubt they'll boycott the game totally because of it.
We might have to wait till later, though, before we get any confirmation from them, since the game won't be out till March of next year, anyway.

So with everyone else having an opinion about Battlefield 3, it should be good to hear from that one body where our ability to purchase the game from the market rests upon.
The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has given a solid, red M (for Mature) rating because of the usual: blood, intense violence, strong language.
Said ESRB:
"This is a first-person shooter in which players assume the role of a U.S. Marine soldier who is on trial for treason. Players engage in fictitious military conflicts as the soldier's story is told from a variety of perspectives (e.g., fighter pilots, tank commanders, Special Forces operatives).
Players use sniper rifles, machine guns, grenades, and rocket launchers to kill enemy soldiers in frenetic firefights. The frequent combat is highlighted by realistic gunfire and large explosions; characters sometimes scream and emit large splashes of blood when shot.
Players can also engage in hand-to-hand combat: repeatedly punching enemies in the face; stabbing soldiers to death with knives. In on sequence, a restrained character's throat is slit (off-screen); in another, players shoot police officers to complete a mission objective. The words "f**k" and "sh*t" can be heard frequently in the dialogue."
Not included in their description, however, is how you can win US$ 1.6 million, just by playing the game. Of course, you have to play it well. If you want to get some tips and tricks for Battlefield 3's beta, then EA DICE leaves out these bread crumbs for you.

And now for some update on the upcoming Mass Effect movie. Yes, it definitely is happening, in case that fact still hasn't registered in your head.
Movie studio Legendary Pictures has divulged some more details on the Hollywood adaptation of the famous Bioware series, confirming that Commander Shepard will indeed be taking front and center yet again.
However, take note that it's going to be the male ComShep, John, and not the lovely female. Not that there's anything wrong with that, though. The storyline, too, is said to be taking on a brand new story, totally distinct from what the first two games had to offer. Yeah, we had that tingling sense of doom, too. We don't really know which way it's going to go, or if it's going to be touching on the storyline of Mass Effect 3, even. What we do know is that BioWare has confirmed that Commander Shepard's story will reach its end in the third iteration of the series.
Apart from that, the rumor that actor Seth Green will be taking on the role of Joker was debunked. So as it stands, we have no clue as to who's going to be in the film.
So, really, apart from this teeny bitty sense of information, everything's still pretty much hush-hush on the Mass Effect movie. As with any movie adaptation of a video game, we just hope they do the series justice, or else don't bother making it at all.

Rock of Ages started rocking out on the PSN and XBL last week, but ACE is not done teasing for all those who have yet to get their hands on their brand new Tower Defense game.
Rock of Ages features the Greek mythological figure, Sisyphus, who was punished with an eternal curse that has him rolling up a giant boulder up a hill, only to have it roll back down upon reaching the top. In the game, you're pretty much tasked to do the same thing, except that your challenge is doubled with obstacles such as facing off against historical commanders and engineers. Oh and instead of rolling up the boulder, you're supposed to roll it down towards your enemies, because, hey, it is a tower defense game, and you have to defend your tower.
Steam players still have to wait a couple more days before it gets out for the PC, on September 7th. Europeans, too, will have to wait until further notice before they can find out when it will be coming to their PSN, XBL and PC platforms.
In the meantime, do watch this launch trailer for Rock of Ages.

Gaijin Games has come out with a brand new trailer for their trippy new title for the WiiWare and iOS platforms, Bit.Trip.
This game basically is a series of video games, which focuses on "Commander Video", the oddly named lead character for the game. Those who have played SuperMeat Boy should find him familiar, and rightfully so, because Commander Video did make a cameo there.
Anyway, do check out what Commander Video can actually do for you:
Bit.Trip. comes for the WiiWare is published by Aksys Games for the WiiWare, and by Namco Networks America Inc. for the iOS versions. It's set to come out on September 13, alongside Bit.Trip. Saga for the 3DS.

Fortunately for BioWare, they find that coming out with DLCs for Mass Effect brings them nothing but a "win-win situation". In an interview with VideoGamer, Ray Muzyka expressed his thoughts on how the add-on contents do push them to improve on their craft.
"We always feel like we can get better," he said. "I think more telemetry in our game client allows us to see what players are actually doing, as well as listening to press feedback and fan feedback on the forums.
We're targeting different audiences with different DLC, and we actually use them as a test bed for innovation too - we try out new things sometimes. It's exciting to see the ones that appeal to a vast audience. It's challenging for the team sometimes to see the ones that don't appeal as much - but we learn from that.
We make it get better, and we're always striving to make great content no matter whether it's small, big, whether it's play-for-free or social, HD console RPGs, or MMOs - we're always striving for high quality in whatever form that takes."
The thing with DLCs, so he explained, is that it's actually "an extension of the game". So therefore , it's a matter of sustaining the gamers' interest in the universe they have presented in the full game, and making sure that they "remain engaged with the franchise for a very long time."
"We're definitely taking lessons, and we're trying to make a universe that players feel like they can be a part of for a very long time."
The third iteration of the Mass Effect series is set to come out early next year, and is being promised to have more RPG elements than ever before. It is also said that it is here in Mass Effect 3 where Commander Shepard's story ends.

Looks like Square Enix has got a couple of sweet things in store for the North American crowd. Executive Producer Dave Hoffman dropped some hints over at Twitter.
Said Hoffman, "Working on two new things. Well, one is 'sort of' new. Announcements should be coming soon! Wish I could say more but can't."
His LinkedIn Profile gives a bit more details in case you want to do some elimination.
"Developed Business Development department resulting in IP acquisitions, studio purchases and three development agreements executed.
Constructed and approved milestones schedules, concept submission packages, testing plans, localization schedules for Supreme Commander 2, Supreme Commander 2 DLC and Dungeon Siege 3."
Could it be something for the 3DS? After all, the company was previously quoted as giving praise to the glasses-free 3D concept of the 3DS. We should know soon, probably at Gamescon in August. We'll be sure to let you know.
