Despite a booming negative reaction from critics and fans around the web, Apple breaks its own record and proves that demand is still strong for its iPhone device.
A couple of weeks ago, the internet was all aflutter with rumors about Apple’s next big product launch. Tech lovers were certain that an iPhone 5 was on the horizon, and eagerly awaited the announcement at Apple’s “Let’s Talk Phone” event. Instead, fans of the brand simply got another iPhone 4, albeit with improved hardware. The iPhone 4S looks the same on the outside as its predecessor, but is twice as fast and boasts a more powerful battery.
Naturally, some fans felt let down by the event, hoping instead for a brand new iPhone to fawn over. Reaction was less than enthusiastic, with may iPhone owners seeing the announcement as another cash grab by Apple. These thoughts didn’t seem to have an effect on sales of the device though; the iPhone 4S is being pre-orders at a rate that eclipses that of any other device.
In the first 24 hours, consumers purchased over one million of the new 4S iPhones. The big numbers aren’t entirely a surprise – many Verizon customers were simply waiting for a new iPhone, since the 4 was relatively dated when it game to their network. Additionally, this is the first time the iPhone has been available on Sprint, so the potential customer base has expanded dramatically.
Of course, many iPhone 4 owners are still going to stay away from the product, as it doesn’t represent a significant upgrade from the previous version. A new camera with 1080p video support, faster processor and dual antenna may simply not be enough to sell another expensive phone to someone that’s had theirs for under a year.

Who says the Verizon iPhone launch was disappointing? The CDMA handset led the field for the month of February.
While the launch of the Verizon iPhone in February did not match the furor caused by that of the iPhone 4 last summer, the long-awaited smartphone was hardly a dud. A new report from analyst ComScore has called the Verizon iPhone the `most acquired handset in the month of February.`
ComScore reached this conclusion by sampling over 30,000 mobile customers. Other findings include that, while Apple has gained 0.9% of the OEM market, for 7.5% overall, it still lags behind several competitors. Samsung leads the market with 24.8%, followed by LG with 20.9%, Motorola at 16.1% and RIM with 8.6%. Google Android platform is on top with 33%, followed by RIM with 28.9%, Apple with 25.2%, Microsoft with 7.7% and Palm with 2.8%.
The success of the Verizon iPhone is hardly surprising, considering the number of Verizon Wireless subscribers champing at the bit to finally get an iPhone and the legions of fed-up AT&T iPhone users who would jump ship to any other carrier at the earliest opportunity. As more smartphone users find their AT&T contracts expiring over the next year, more of them will be taking their business to Verizon.
The big challenge facing the Verizon iPhone now is the much-hyped, Android powered HTC Thunderbolt, which unlike the iPhone 4, can take advantage of Verizon's new LTE network and 4G data service. The iPhone 4 may begin to lose its sparkle this summer, as more speedy new smartphones running Android are released.
Will the iPhone 5 have new features that will lure Verizon customers away from the Thunderbolt and other flashy newcomers? According to reports, we won't find out until fall, which could give the competing handsets just enough time to steal some of Apple's thunder.
