GameStop iOS Trade-Ins Exceeding Expectations

The retailer’s fledgling iPhone/iPad/iPod trade-in market is apparently flourishing.

Earlier in the year, GameStop announced that it would begin taking trade-ins of iOS devices like iPods and iPads. The initial response was mixed, as it was hard to determine whether device owners would actually bring their hard-won devices into GameStop to trade for systems or games, especially given he company’s reputation for sticking it to trade-in customers.

According to GameStop, however, there’s no room for debate – the program has been a massive success. Company president Tony Bartel issued a statement declaring that the new service had “exceeded expectations,” and noted that GameStop was expecting a big rush in the post-holiday season due to gamers trading in old devices replaced by new gifts.

GameStop is by no means the only company that accepts iOS for trade, but it was a bold move for a retailer that focuses exclusively on gaming. Naturally, the company will need to continue to branch out as digital distribution becomes more and more viable – the trade-in market is the most valuable aspect of their business and will keep them solvent for years to come if they can stay on top of trends.

Superman Coming to iOS Devices

The Man of Steel is looking to make a comeback, with a new movie in the works and a classic return to form headed to the iPad and iPhone.

While the success of the Marvel movie franchise is hard to overlook, DC Comics has had a much more mixed experience at the box office. The Batman series is trucking along as a hallmark of superhero filmmaking, but the remainder of the DC properties just haven’t seemed to catch on with viewers.

DC is looking to change all of this with the upcoming Superman film, titled “Man of Steel.” Taking a page from the Dark Knight/Captain America playbook, the film will be gritty and rooted more in reality that previous Superman adventures. Superman will also be making a new appearance on you iOS device, though the game doesn’t seem to be based at all on the new film.

Superman: iPad (the name I’ve just given it) is being developed by Chillingo and Tiger Games, and looks as though it’s taking its cues directly from the Superman comics of old. Bright colors and familiar villains are on display here, with players suiting up in the familiar blue tights and using Superman’s many powers to protect the city of Metropolis.

You’ll earn medals for your performance in each level, generating a bit of replay value for perfectionists and Superman fans alike. Beyond that, the rest of the game is essentially a mystery. Superman titles in general have a legacy of failure, especially the much-maligned Superman 64. Here’s hoping Superman: iPad can escape those previous mistakes and create something memorable and fun.

Carmack: iPad 2's power is only half that of consoles

While id Software's John Carmack is a fan of Apple's technology, he will not go so far as to concur with the claims that iPad 2's power is equal to that of consoles.

He says of Apple's mobile device, "We have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to mobile development." If it were up to him, though, he would much rather have developers bring in their games to consoles and rake in big bucks than pouring it all to iOS games. "We have more power than you can afford to take advantage of.

Regarding the "incorrect hyperbole" of iPad 2's power, "There's been incorrect hyperbole about the power of these devices, where people are saying that they have console-level performance. The iPad 2 has about half the performance power, and that's a ballpark estimate."

He still closes, though, with a positive word for mobile devices. "But that does mean that mobile devices coming out, certainly next year, will be flat out more powerful, and they'll probably be powerful enough where you don't even need the hyper-optimizing, that you could do a fairly easy port-over of your technology and assets."

Earlier last month, Electronic Arts dissed on the App Store, saying that its model is in "freefall".

iPad 2 sells almost a million on first weekend out

It's not a fluke - iPad 2 released last Friday in North America, and already, it's being reported as having sold almost a million units.

Reuters reports that most stores who had iPad 2 on the launch day were already out of stock by the tailend of weekend. In fact, Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White said that it was already hard to find a unit by then.

He said, "Our field checks over the weekend indicate that the iPad 2 sold out at every Apple and non-Apple store we contacted. In fact, all the stores had worked through iPad 2 inventory by Saturday afternoon, and there were no new iPad 2 deliveries on Sunday."

Retailers like Best Buy claim that some of their branches sold out the gadget and its corresponding accessories within 10 minutes flat.

iPad 2 boasts of a faster hardware, thinner frame, and a pair of cameras on the front and rear, perfect for those FaceTime moments.

What probably made it a huge success - apart from its novelty - is that with the new features, it's still priced starting at US$ 499, the same as the first generation iPad.

With iPad 2's successful launch, Apple found its shares rising 0.6 percent to US$ 354.20 on Nasdaq, even when oher technology companies saw a drop in their shares.

It's not a fluke - iPad 2 released last Friday in North America, and already, it's being reported as having sold almost a million units.

iPad 2 hacked already?

iPad 2 was just recently released, and already, a hacker is claiming that he's already cracked it open, even posting a video for proof.

A guy going by the handle of @comex at Twitter posted this video of the iPad 2, allegedly jailbroken. In the video, you cn see Cydia 1.1 running on the latest craze gadget from Apple. He said in his tweet, "Would've had it yesterday if I didn't have to spend 15 days looking for a replacement exploit."

Although the hack came just in the heels of the iPad 2 release, it still took quite a bit longer than usual, presumably because Apple had tried to strengthen its defenses against hackers.

It's still a breakthrough nonetheless for those looking to jailbreak their iPad 2.
