The Australian government is finally addressing major problems in its game rating system.
We’ve talked previously about the massive problems with the way Australia’s government rates games. Because the country has no “Mature” equivalent rating, all games must be appropriate for teens in order to hit retail shelves. This limitation has caused some games to either be modified for the Aussie market, or made unavailable to Aussie players.
The Australian government is aware of the problem, and recently recommended a full review of their ratings system be administered to figure out how to best move forward. While the results from that review are still pending, the new Federal Minister for Home Affairs doesn’t seem intent on waiting around. Jason Clare, who now serves in the Minister position, confirmed via interview that a bill designed to establish a mature-equivalent rating would be introduced to parliament sometime next month. The new rating, known as R18+, will help developers bring violent and otherwise graphic content to Australian shores.
After the bill is introduced, it will have to pass first in the Lower House, then in the Senate. There’s no guarantee of passage, but even having a bill on the docket is farther than the Aussie government has managed to get in a long time.
Here’s hoping the bill goes through and our Australian friends can stop worrying about whether particular games will make it to their stores. Look for more updates in February, once the bill hits a vote.

Coming soon to an Xbox 360 near you: new character skins, new maps, and an all-new leveling mechanic.
RAAM’s Shadow, the first round of DLC for Microsoft’s exclusive Gears of War franchise, was released only days ago, and Epic Games does not intend to slow down the content barrage just because the holidays are ending. The second DLC pack, titled Fenix Rising, has officially been dated for a January 17 release, and it’s absolutely packed with new stuff for Gears fans to enjoy.
Here’s a quick breakdown on what you can expect from Fenix Rising:
Five new multiplayer maps
New leveling/unlock system
New multiplayer character skins
The new leveling system is of particular interest, providing players with a way to unlock special emblems and weapon skins. You’ll be able to level from 1-100, and then you’ll have the option of “re-upping,” a mechanism similar to the “prestige mode” of Call of Duty. Fenix Rising is currently priced at 800 Microsoft Points, or 800 points for those that jumped in on the Gears season pass.
Do you think a new leveling mechanic and a few new maps is enough to sell this DLC pack to the masses?

Assassin’s Creed is coming to Square Enix’s upcoming RPG epic. Yes, really.
Downloadable content certainly has a way of making you question the good sense of developers. Most of the time a DLC pack makes sense, but every now and then, a game company does something that really makes you scratch your head.
Case in point, Square Enix just announced that Final Fantasy XIII-2 players will have a very special costume available for purchase and download, that of Ezio Auditore da Firenze. Fans of the Assassin’s Creed franchise will immediately recognize the name, for Ezio is one of the most important characters in the Assassin’s Creed world.
Ezio’s costume will be an optional outfit for one of the new characters introduced in FFXIII-2, Noel Kreiss. FFXIII-2 is already stacking up an impressive list of DLC content, with weapons, costumes, and boss battles confirmed for the game months before its actual release. While it may not make since to western gamers to mix Ubisoft and Square Enix games, the two companies are pretty tight in Japan – Square Enix is the primary distributor for Ubisoft games. Square Enix is apparently a big deal in Japan; they also distributed Modern Warfare 3.
Look for the downloadable Ezio outfit to show up sometime after the launch of Final Fantasy XIII-2 (duh), which is scheduled for release sometime in early 2012. There’s no further information on whether it will be free, an exclusive, or what, so stay tuned for future updates.

The cinematic game franchise may be landing itself a big-budget movie adaptation, complete with 3D visuals.
Game to movie rumors are a dime a dozen, and for every one that comes to fruition it seems like there are ten that never go anywhere. Of course, this particular rumor is different, since we know for a fact that Assassin’s Creed developer Ubisoft is aggressively courting movie studios for a film adaptation of the game.
According to Variety, the film industry’s trade mag, Sony Pictures is on the cusp of closing a deal that will land them the AC franchise. Ubisoft is negotiating to retain creative control, which I think is a good move on their part considering how some of the more recent game adaptations have turned out. The AC franchise has an excellent story; it would be a shame to see a film studio destroy it and keeping it as an Ubisoft release my help prevent that from happening.
What’s also interesting is that Ubisoft is essentially demanding the film be produced in 3D. Ubisoft is approaching the film deal as a marketing opportunity and sees movies based on their games as a strong method for introducing franchises to people that may not have experienced them. Essentially, they’re hoping to capitalize on the potential surge of interest a film can generate in one of their games.
In addition to the AC franchise, Ubisoft is also shopping Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon – they’ve already made Prince of Persia (to very poor results). It’s obvious that Ubisoft considers game-based films to be a core part of their business model moving forward and they’ve started a studio, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, to handle the day-to-day.
Do you like the idea of an Assassin’s Creed film, or are you worried it will turn into a snooze fest like the last Ubisoft film (Jake Gyllenhaal, really)?

The latest Final Fantasy MMO is finally making its way to your home console, but maybe not as soon as you think.
It’s been a year since the original launch of Final Fantasy XIV, and while a PlayStation 3 version was promised by Square-Enix, we haven’t heard much regarding when that would actually happen. Things have been tough on the game as of late, but Square is finally ready to go ahead with the PS3 release – in 2012.
The current target date for Final Fantasy XIV’s PS3 release is next October, so roughly two years after the game originally hit shelves. The statement on the game’s official website is a bit hard to understand; they’re apparently considering the PS3 release a “new” version of the game, representing all the improvements of the last few months.
Things are also going to change for players that are already enjoying the game, in the form of a switch from a free-to-play model to the more familiar subscription-based payment plan we normally see out of big MMOs.
Here’s a quote from the release outlining what you can expect:
“Following the results of the development and operations teams’ efforts, together with the release of the overall plans for the game’s future, we will bring the unbilled period to a close between late November and early December of 2011, and thereafter introduce our subscription-based billing system. Further details will be sent to the email address players submitted at the time of their FINAL FANTASY XIV account registration, and will also be posted on the Lodestone at a future date.
Needless to say, with the onset of the subscription-based billing system, operation and development of the game will proceed, and updates will continue to be released regularly as they have been. Between now and release of the new FINAL FANTASY XIV, we will do as much as possible by way of fine-tuning the game and adding new content. Our focus will be on the theme of a story that can only be experienced in the here and now, and the dramatic changes to Eorzea will be incorporated into that storyline. Each update will deliver an unprecedented and unrepeatable game experience. For those of you continuing to play, I promise that the release of these updates and the eventual transition to the new FINAL FANTASY XIV will both come smoothly and seamlessly.”
The statement from Square is very, very long and contains a massive amount of information regarding changes to the game. If you’re a FFXIV player and you’re passionate about the game, it’s probably in your best interest to check it out in full.
I’m curious to see how the large community of Final Fantasy XIV players react to this news – does anyone think moving to a subscription plan is a bad move? It seems like taking something that was once free and asking people to pay for it a year later is a surefire way to encourage them to find a new game.
Then again, once you have a year invested in an MMO, maybe you’d rather pay than leave your friends and characters behind. What do you think?

The newest version of the Minecraft pre-release client comes complete with easier potions, an enchantment table and, apparently, baby animals.
If you’re excited about the upcoming “Minecraft Adventure Update,” otherwise known as “Minecraft 1.9,” you’ll be happy to know that one of the developers has offered up the most recent version of the update for download. Starting today, you can test out version three of “Minecraft 1.9,” which makes potion crafting a bit more straightforward and introduces a few new items to boot.
The other big addition to the “Minecraft” client? Baby animals! Notch, the creator of “Minecraft,” has previously posted pictures of the tiny creatures, noting that while they don’t drop loot or move any differently from normal animals, they do eventually grow into animals that can be harvested for resources. If you’ve ever wanted to start a “Minecraft” farm, now’s the time.
You can pick up the new version of 1.9 right here: (Direct Download)
The “Minecraft” community is hoping to eventually see full support for third-party mods, better underwater mechanics for building submerged structures and volcanoes. Those that have played 1.9 already note the ability to drink milk and water as well as build an enchantment table, in addition to minor changes such as reported FPS increases and numerous bug fixes.
“Minecraft” has no central plot and instead leaves players to come up with their own motivation for succeeding at the game, and their own definition of success. The game is an open world that players can modify, building mining colonies, superstructures or just generally trying not to be killed. The full, complete version of the game is scheduled for release in November, though the initial beta release has been a massive success for its creator, allowing him to create Mojang games with the proceeds.
Are you keeping up with the pre-releases for “Minecraft?” Are you ready to start collecting baby animals?

The forum team reports that character transfers, name changes, race changes and faction changes are currently broken.
Orlyia, friendly panda bear and Blizzard CS agent, has confirmed that Blizzard’s paid character services are experiencing some sort of technical issue. While these services usually take anywhere between a few minutes to a couple of hours, it looks like they’re simply not working for the time being.
Heres’ the quote from Orlyia, courtesy of the support forums:
“We are aware that some character services may not be fully processing at this time.
This is currently being looked into and will hopefully be resolved soon.
We do apologize for the inconvenience.”
Pretty straightforward. If you’ve tried to transfer, race change or otherwise modify your character this morning, you’ll just need to wait for the Blizzard folks to get the problem sorted out. Blizz is usually pretty good about things like this, so I’d avoid spamming support channels with in-game petitions and phone calls until you’ve given them a few hours to get character services working again.
There are now so many ways to change your character in “WoW,” it’s no wonder there’s an occasional outage.
When “World of Warcraft” first launched, you created a character and you stuck with it. Eventually, realm transfers were introduced, but with a hefty 30-day cool-down. Now, nearly six years after launch, your character in “World of Warcraft” is more of a loose set of stats than any concrete entity. Blizzard has added a number of paid features that allow you to swap sides, change your appearance, and generally ignore any sort of careful calculations during the creation phase.
Sick of being an Orc? Try a paid race change! Want to get revenge on an old guild? Faction change and camp them into oblivion! Did ninja looting get you locked out of raids on your realm? Transfer over and start again!
Do you think being able to change your character hurts the gaming experience? Are you caught up in this minor billing debacle? Let us know in the comments!

Of course, character customization will also be available, letting players pick from classes of human, elf or orc. As with any action game, weapon leveling is also a must, and that, therefore, will also be present.
