The developer of STALKER breaks its silence to address rumors of its demise.
News broke last week that GSC Gameworld, the studio behind STALKER, had suddenly closed its doors and shut down production on STALKER 2. Of course, the news was broken by a Ukrainian website (the studio is based in Ukraine) and there was very little in the way of corroboration, save one random dude on Twitter.
The studio quickly posted an update on its Twitter account denying the claims, but the Tweet was subsequently deleted. And that’s where we were last week. This week, things don’t seem to look any better.
The company broke Twitter silence early this morning, saying simply that the studio “will do our best” to continue development. That message doesn’t exactly instill hope in the legions of fans waiting for STALKER 2’s release, nor does it offer any confirmation on whether or not the studio is actually going to survive. Whoever runs GSC’s Twitter doesn’t seem to know either, writing, “nothing is certain” at the current moment.
We’ll keep you posted as updates roll out, but for now, it’s starting to look as though STALKER 2 may never see the light of day, and a relatively good indie studio will be shutting down.
What do you think will happen? Are you upset about potentially losing STALKER 2?

The hardcore PC shooter is the latest in a long line of titles requiring a constant online connection, but is it really DRM?
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, sequel to very hardcore and often frustrating S.T.A.L.K.E.R., is headed to PC systems sometime next year. Details on the game are slim – we know that the story picks up from roughly where the original left off and there will be new characters and items, pretty much what one could guess about any sequel. Now, thanks to an interview with a Russian (Ukrainian?) website, the studio head of GSC Game World has confirmed another feature for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, one that gamers may not be too excited about: always-on DRM. Maybe.
Here’s the quote from the interview, translated via Destructoid:
"Protection from piracy? Part of the content will be located on the server and downloaded as the game progresses. Permanent internet access is required. Text information, code and quests will be loaded through that connection.”
"Software piracy is an issue for us, we try to fight it, but within reason. If people cannot afford a licensed version, it is to our advantage if they download a pirated copy, and then want to buy a license. In Ukraine, there are different products that people love so much that they buy a license in principle. We want to create just such a product."
While GameSpy and Destructoid have interpreted this response as confirmation that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will have always-on DRM similar to what Ubisoft used with Assassin’s Creed II, it doesn’t really sound that way to me. Always-on DRM is in place to check whether your game license is valid, not to load content as you quest through the world. In fact, streaming data directly from servers sounds a lot more like a core component of an MMORPG than any sort of copyright protection scheme.
Whether you consider it official DRM or not, one thing is certain: If you want to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, you’ll need to stay connected to the internet at all times.
How do you feel about always-on DRM? Necessary evil or frustrating inconvenience?
