I Am Alive Headed for Direct Download

Ubisoft reveals its plan to get the Chicago-based survival game directly to your console, and teases your anticipation with some creepy new artwork.

At first glance, “I Am Alive” sounds a lot like your typical survival/horror game. Players take the role of Adam Collins and work to stay alive in a post-apocalyptic Chicago wastelend. As you adventure through the ruins of the city, you’ll need to deal with dangers both human and natural – after, all, it was a massive earthquake that destroyed the city in the first place.

Gamers and the gaming press have been curious to see if “I Am Alive” actually makes it to store shelves; the project has been fraught with problems and has been delayed multiple times. As of today, it looks like the title won’t be gracing your local game store at all – Ubisoft has elected to release the title through Xbox Live Arcade and the Sony PlayStation Network (what, no Steam?!).

Details on the title are scant – all we know is that Adam Collins once had a family, the city of Chicago is going to be in a pretty rough state, inhabitants will do whatever it takes to survive and you’ll need to climb on top of buildings to survey your surroundings. Since Ubisoft effectively mastered building-climbing design in the “Assassin’s Creed,” franchise, maybe players will finally get the opportunity to do some modern-day free running on recognizable skyscrapers.

The game recently landed an M rating thanks to throat-slashing, pistol-whipping and impalement. . In addition to serving as good news for gamers that like gory finishing moves, the ratings board decision implies that the game is nearly complete. Nearly.

Either way, it’s nice to see the title finally headed our way, even if there’s no official release date. It’s also nice to see a survival game that doesn’t depend entirely on zombies, irradiated mutants that look like zombies, or monsters that look like zombies.

Of course, at this point I can’t really be sure they won’t show up.

ESRB gives M rating to Rise of Nightmares for 'intense violence'

Kinect-horror title Rise of Nightmares gets an M (for Mature) rating from the ESRB, and unsurprisingly so. After all, it contains what the ratings board describes as "intense violence".

And that's on top of all the blood, gore, partial nudity strong language, and suggestive themes present in the game.

Said ESRB of Rise of Nightmares:

This is a horror-adventure game in which players assume the role of an American tourist who must rescue his wife from a deranged scientist. From a first-person perspective, players use brass knuckles, knives, hatchets, and chainsaws to kill zombie-like creatures and disfigured monsters inside a mansion environment. Combat is highlighted by exaggerated sprays of blood, and damage often results in dismemberment or decapitation—stray body parts sometimes litter the ground.

Some sequences and cutscenes depict more intense acts of violence: a man screams loudly as spikes impale his body; a restrained character's hand is chopped off before he is killed; a character (cut in half) crawls away in a pool of blood; a soldier is ripped apart by a monster, causing blood to stain the screen.

During the course of the game, some female creatures are depicted in revealing outfits (e.g., 'pasties' that partially cover their breasts); in one sequence, a woman sits on the central character's chest and engages in suggestive dialogue (e.g., 'Oh, how I've thought of this—night after night. How I've missed these lips.'). Dialogue also includes phrases such as 'Best sex of my life.'/'Worst sex of my life,' 'f**k,' and 'sh*t.'

Kinect-horror title Rise of Nightmares gets an M (for Mature) rating from the ESRB, and unsurprisingly so.

Duke Nukem Forever gets ESRB rating

It's been a long time coming, but it looks like our good ole' buble-gum chewin', cigar-smoking, babe-lovin, and ass-kicking action hero is back in his old antics again. According to the US software ratings board ESRB, Duke Nukem Forever will include some highly explicit "sexual acts," mature humor, nudity and use of drugs and alcohol, among others.
