Mojang and LEGO confirm that they’re working on Minecraft-themed LEGOS. Here’s hoping for some Creepers!
I played Minecraft very intensely for about two weeks, and when friends asked me what the game was all about, I explained it by saying, “Well, it’s like LEGOs, except it’s a game.” I’m sure there are plenty of Minecraft players that would agree with this statement – the simple block-building mechanics of the game are reminiscent of the block building we all did in our youths.
Which is why it’s no surprise to see that LEGO and Mojang are officially partnering up for a series of Minecraft-themed LEGOs. The whole thing is actually the result of a community outreach program put into motion by LEGO – they asked LEGO fans what brands they wanted to see next, and the response overwhelmingly favored Minecraft.
Mojang appears to be onboard, stating that the two brands were “meant to be together,” and also that they’ll be donating their part of the royalties to charity.
Everything is still in the design phase now, and you can see some proposed designs here: Lego Cuuso.
Would you buy Minecraft LEGOs?

The gaming giant looks to enter the streaming business with a unique revenue model. But will it work?
There have been buzzings regarding GameStop’s intention to enter the video game streaming market, but no concrete details. Some analyst expected them to launch a cloud-gaming service similar to OnLive, while others expected them to develop a device that takes customer’s wallets right out of their pockets as they enter the store.
The service they’ve actually announced works a little differently than either of those ideas, though, and seems to be a completely new idea in terms of streaming service.
The basic gist of the service is this: you purchase a game at GameStop, and if you subscribe to their streaming service, you’ll be able to access that game from other computers or devices. Basically, you pay a small stipend on every game your purchase in order to preserve access to it if you don’t happen to be near your Xbox or PlayStation. It’s a different way to approach the idea of game sharing, for sure.
The service is currently in beta and aimed at a 2012 release, but honestly it sounds a bit strange. How, exactly, is GameStop going to stream Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3 or Skyrim to me if I’m not by my Xbox? I’m interested to see what they have up their sleeve, but I can’t say I’ll be taking part.
What do you think of the GameStop streaming service as it’s laid out? Would you sign up for it, or are you GameStop-averse like me?

Hey, remember that game Battlefield 3 that still totally exists? It’s getting a few changes in an upcoming patch.
The tactical light in Battlefield 3 is by far one of the worst ideas in the history of first-person shooters. At least, it is in its current incarnation, which blinds every player within a ten-mile distance regardless of whether they’re indoors or standing in broad daylight.
Still, the tactical light could be something special with just a little bit of love, and DICE seem to be well aware of the problem. Developer Alan Kertz posted these images on his Twitter feed, noting the before and after-patch intensity of the light’s now-familiar glow:
Those of you that are fans of the flashlight shouldn’t throw a hissy fit quite yet, because it’s still retaining its sun-like intensity. It will just be effective at a much shorter range than previously, which makes perfect sense when you think about how a flashlight works in real life. Frankly, I’m surprised they didn’t dumb this thing down after the beta.
DICE is also working on balance adjustments for anti-air guns, noting the impact they have on airborne vehicles may be a bit too touchy at the moment. They’re also reportedly working on making jets a bit more useful to the ground game and improving players’ ability to stay alive while flying, but we’ll have to wait and see how that plays out.
Are you happy to see the tactical light being toned down, or are you too busy playing Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3 to care?

Ó

Now that we’ve all settled in for a Panda-themed expansion, it’s time to look at what’s actually going to change with World of Warcraft’s newest expansion.
The player community has only known about the upcoming WoW expansion, Mists of Pandaria, for about a week. But as with most things Blizzard, the official announcement marked the beginning of an incredible information surge, with previews, images, videos and all sorts of other stuff cropping up across the web. Last night, the Pandaria dev team hosted a live Q&A session packed with information about the expansion, but one recurring theme was the return of world PVP.
Fans of the original World of Warcraft (Vanilla WoW) will remember that world PVP was an integral part of the experience. From raids on Southshore, occupations at Gadgetzan and the enormous pain that was Blackrock Mountain, world PVP managed to crop up quite a bit in the old days. After the addition of a sanctuary city in Burning Crusade and another in Wrath, it became difficult to find a good, steady world fight.
Blizz seems to be aware that world PVP has fallen away and answered a few questions on the topic in the Q&A:
Q: At Blizzcon Tom Chilton mentioned possible incentives for raiding enemy towns to encourage world PVP in mists, can Greg or Cory elaborate on this at all?
A: In regards to extra rewards for world pvp, we are contemplating the idea of increasing players conquest point caps by an extra 10-15%.
Q: Hey there. Will Pandaria have a new Dalaran like city or will we be using the ones already existing ingame?
A: We will have separate player hubs for both the Horde and Alliance on Pandaria. Separate hubs means we do not have to make them sanctuary and will encourage world PVP. These hubs will have access to an AH, Bank and general vendors. Valor, conquest, profession and faction vendors will be scattered around the world to encourage travel.
Q: One of the current issues discouraging World pvp is the presence of highly overpowered guards around cities and hubs, 1-shotting anyone who engages in PvP. How will this be in MoP?
A: We know this is an issue in the current game and we plan to address it in Mists. We want to encourage world PVP, not make it a one-shot game for NPC guards. This is one of the main reasons we decided to make two separate player hubs instead of a shared sanctuary.
Q: I don't like PvP, I play on a PvP server, because my friends on a PvP server and most people from my country is playing on that particular server. I have to face world PvP every time I am doing my business in the new hubs in Pandaria? I love the new zone, but I don't want to be backstabbed by a rogue while I am selling my stuff, or buying equipment. Can non-interested players avoid the world PvP
A: Yes, we certainly don't want you to always be back-stabbed while you are setting up your auctions. However, if a group of the opposing faction wants to form a raid and attack your city, we want them to have a chance to be successful. So yes and no. =)
Q: With the world PvP that is being talked about, are there any plans to add any Quest Hubs in Mists of Pandaria which functions like a smaller scale of Baradin Hold/Wintergrasp that will change faction when it is assaulted? Maybe even ones with actual leveling quests instead of just more dailies to add a dynamic questing experience like the ones that were talked about at Blizzcon?
A: Yes, this is exactly the kind of thing we are thinking about. We will share more info on our ideas for this soon. The idea is that we want to give players more options and not just always have one place to go or one thing to do.
As a former WoW player and fan of flash raids and other world PVP content, I’d hope to see much more of it in future World of Warcraft builds. In the old days, before cross-realm battlegrounds and instant-queue, teleporting dungeons, it was possible to build up a rivalry on your realm. It had less structure and more excitement.
Perhaps these new changes in Mists of Pandaria will rekindle those flames?
If you’re a WoW fan or player, you should read the entire Q&A posted at MMO Champion.

mfworldpvp1Now that we’ve all settled in for a Panda-themed expansion, it’s time to look at what’s actually going to change with World of Warcraft’s upcoming content update.

Matt Cox, notable for his work on both the Destroy All Humans and Scribblenauts games, re-enters the world of gaming with an independent mobile games company.
There’s a new company in town, one that’s focused on delivering unique and interesting titles while at the same time helping out their fellow man. Matt Cox, famous for his work on Scribblenauts and Destroy All Humans, has returned to the world of video gaming with a new company, Fourfire.
This new games company is going to be exclusively focused on developing innovative titles for the mobile market, including traditional handhelds and IOS devices. Their first game, titled Sticky Bees, is already in the works, and is slated for a November release.
Here’s what Cox had to say about this new foray into mobile gaming:
"I want to take risks with genre-defining ideas. I love designing gameplay that can be fun in small spurts, but has the depth to hook my more hardcore gamer instincts."
There are only four members of the Fourfire team, with Cox noting how much impact small groups can have on the mobile market thanks to recent innovations in technology. Additionally, the company intends to donate a portion of its profits to charity organizations, with Cox noting:
“Although we love games, we realize it’s a first world luxury.  So if we could create games that are fun while helping to bring healing and hope in the real world, that would be the best type of ‘success’ to us.”
This whole thing sounds like a win to me; I am a huge fan of Scribblenauts and would love to see some proven developers start pushing into mobile territory.

Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi apparently can't say goodbye for good to game development. Although he bid farewell to the scene last year, claiming that he'll be out searching for new opportunities and new things to busy himself with, he finds himself back in the circuit once again, this time working on Glitch.
No, he's not working on a glitch. That's the title of Tiny Speck's latest free-to-play browser-based MMO. How did the indie developers get the imaginative, quirky creator on their team? Founder Stewart Butterfield revealed:
"We played some Glitch together, battled ideas back and forth and found that we shared the same values -- deep beliefs in curiosity, humor, absurdity, and above all a belief in the positive power of play."
The team obviously can't get over the fact that Takahashi is back in the scene, and with them, no less, leaving no room to spare in calling him a hero. "Everybody has heroes. Some are fortunate enough to have a chance to meet their heroes face-to-face. And some have the exceptional fortune to work directly with one of their heroes on a shared goal. And... that's us!"
Fortunate, they truly are. Takahashi is certainly one of the more creative minds in the industry today, and for him to absolutely depart the scene is surely a great loss. The last project that Takahashi worked on was Noby Noby Boy for the PS3, which came out last February.
Glitch is currently in its closed beta, and there's still no date set for its release. If all goes well, though, we just might be able to catch it before 2011 ends.

Ó

The long contest over the legality of former Governor Schwarzennegger's 2005 bill disallowing those under 18 years of age to purchase video games with violent content have now been put to rest.
The US Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional yesterday, on a vote of 7-2, based on the grounds that it defies the "basic principles of freedom of speech" as well as the First Amendment."
So said the ruling: "Video games qualify for First Amendment protection. Like protected books, plays and movies, they communicate ideas through familiar literary devices and features distinctive to the medium. And 'the basic principles of freedom of speech... do not vary' with a new and different communication medium."
"The most basic principle - that government lacks the power to restrict expression because of its message, ideas, subject matter, or content... is subject to a few limited exceptions for historically unprotected speech, such as obscenity, incitement, and fighting words. But legislature cannot create new categories of unprotected speech simply by weighing the value of a particular category against its social costs and then punishing it if it fails the test."
Apart from that, the Supreme Court also dealt with the issue of connecting video games and violent behavior. According to them, they did not find any conclusive link that will put video games responsible for a person's violent act.
"Any demonstrated effects are both small and indistinguishable from effects produced by other media. Since California has declined to restrict those other media, e.g., Saturday morning cartoons, its video-game regulation is wildly underinclusive, raising serious doubts about whether the State is pursuing the interest it invokes or is instead disfavoring a particular speaker or viewpoint."
This ruling of the Supreme Court definitely is a win for gamers everywhere. But inasmuch as it proves that it does fall under the protection of the First Amendment, it also reiterates the need for parents to make sure they give proper guidance to their underaged children, especially when it comes to the content that they are given access to.
It is true, after all, that violence is not necessarily confined only to video games. Open the TV or the Internet and you see it automatically. Even the most classic literary books may contain violence. In fact, just step out of the house and odds are anyone are potentially exposed to violence. This is the reality that our society today faces. For a government to restrict freedom of speech on the sole probability that someone might get bad ideas is to be a step back.
Again, though, no right is fully absconsced of responsibility. So if you choose to let your kids play with games containing violence - no matter the degree - then at the very least, instill in them the clear delineation that video game is fiction, and not everything they will see in media should be adhered to or emulated.

Anonymous released a statement addressed to the users, calling them "paranoid jerks" for thinking that they are criminals, instead of friends.

Anonymous rocked the world of Sony, and consequently, that of the PlayStation 3 users, when they staged attacks against the company for their alleged selfish inclinations regarding information about their technology.
While their advocacy is supposedly to forward the cause of the users, Anonymous isn't getting as much love as they would have wanted, or expected.
Their attacks have so far caused more trouble to the gamers than to Sony itself, with hundreds not being able to enjoy the services of the PlayStation Network at one point.
Just last week, Anonymous staged two "major" boycotts against Sony, both of which did not really meet their expectations. Now, the group is releasing a statement addressed to the users, calling them "paranoid jerks" for thinking that they are criminals.
Said an Anonymous representative in an interview with an Italian website:
"I wish that all should (be) inform(ed) on the events (of) Anonymous and do not judge the story without first being well informed. Anonymous does not want to be an enemy, Anonymous is a friend of the people, if you think Anonymous is wrong do not hesitate to have your say, do not let anyone manipulate your ideas and do not let yourself be caught by appearances.
Above all, we are not criminals, paranoid jerks. Anonymous is composed of all races, sex and religion. It's just the tool to awaken the global consciousness, at least in the network. There are people who daily kill, steal, but it's right there sitting on a leather arm chair."
The group has also previously guaranteed that they are not done going after Sony.
