Adios, World of Warcraft Game Masters!
World of Warcraft is still the industry’s leading paid MMO, but the title has been steadily losing subscribers for the better part of two years. Though the holiday season treated WoW well (the MMO lost only 100,000 players), it’s clear that Blizzard needs to do some serious re-shuffling in order to keep the game profitable for the long term.
And re-shuffling is exactly what the company plans to do. Blizzard has just announced that it is laying off 600 employees, most of which work in customer support. According to the company, 90 percent of the layoffs are occurring in non-development departments of the company. 600 is no small sum—it represents a pretty large chunk of Blizzard-Activision’s total employee number of around 7,300.
Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime had this to say on the topic:
“In order to keep making epic game content while serving players effectively, we have to be smart about how we manage our resources. This means we sometimes have to make difficult decisions about how to best maintain the health of the company. We’re in the process of making some of those hard decisions now.”
In the face of these layoffs, there is still hope for aspiring developers. Blizzard is currently recruiting dev talent for some of its upcoming titles. And the layoffs don’t necessarily mean that Blizz is in financial trouble, just that World of Warcraft is no longer the money-printing machine it once was.
Do you still play WoW? Have you ever interacted with the game’s support staff?

Job listing notes that “you must be prepared to dramatically over-promise.”
Lionhead Studios, the company behind the ground-breaking Fable and less-than-groundbreaking Fable II and Fable III, is apparently ready to jump back into the mix. The studio is currently on the market for a lead developer, one who can contribute to a “cutting-edge, genre-defining” game.
The job listing also notes that the developer will be working directly Peter Molyneux on a true AAA title. Lionnhead hasn’t made any big announcements regarding upcoming titles, but the job listing indicates that they’re at least moving forward on some sort of next-gen project, one that Molyneux will likely hype to near-oblivion.
Lionhead’s website is currently offline while the studio gives it a “fresh new look.” When the site comes up in six days, eight hours and 29 minutes, perhaps we’ll have a little more information on what exactly Molyneux and his team are up to.
Maybe we’ll even get one of those classic Molyneux speeches about how his next game is so amazing it makes computers explode with ecstasy.

At this point, the presence of Diablo on consoles isn’t a surprise. But at least it’s official!
We’ve seen plenty of hints that Blizzard was considering a console port of Diablo III; most notably, when the company actually stated that they were considering it. Since then, there have been a few job postings and other indications that the game was being developed, but it wasn’t until today that we heard some sort of official confirmation.
Taking to Twitter, Blizzard community manager Bashiok confirmed the console version’s existence by announcing that Josh Mosqueira, who helmed development on Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, would be leading the console Diablo project.
Of course, since this is Blizzard we’re talking about, details are relatively scarce. We know that Diablo III is in development for consoles, but we don’t know which consoles or when. All we can assume is that the game will show up on PS3 and/or Xbox 360, and it will be sometime in the next twenty years.
Either way, it’s pretty great news for the console community – we’ll finally get a chance to enjoy this Diablo thing everyone loves so much!
Are you picking up Diablo III on your PC, or waiting for the console version?

Growing evidence indicates Blizzard was serious about bringing Diablo III to a console near you.
Remember earlier this year, when Blizzard talked about bringing Diablo III to consoles? The company was clear about its intent to explore a console release for the long-awaited sequel, but there’s a big difference between “exploring a release” and “actively developing.” We’ve got some new fuel to throw on the fire today, in the form of a job posting published by the company earlier this week.
The new job, listed as Console Network Senior Software Engineer, has one primary responsibility when it comes to Diablo III:
“Design, implement, and maintain networking related game systems for the console game.
Identify previously unknown issues and offer solutions.”
So there you have it. Diablo III is almost certainly headed to consoles – eventually. There’s still no confirmation from Blizzard, nor is there any type of release date (as is the company’s custom). But if they’re hiring people to work specifically on the console version of the game, you can expect to see it in your PS3/Xbox 360 game section soon enough.
Assuming, of course, it doesn’t go the way of StarCraft: Ghost.
Would you play Diablo III on a console?

A job posting on the developer’s website leaks their upcoming Vita/PS3-exclusive.
Fresh from the rumor mill: Square Enix is developing an action-RPG title for the PS3 and PS Vita – one that involves airships. The story leaked earlier today when a couple of interesting job listings turned up for the company’s 1st Production Department – the section of Square Enix that works on Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts titles.
One of the listings describes the need for a “planner” that can design a player growth system and ability properties. Another requests someone that can create the “play elements” for an airship that navigates over a large world map. The genre is confirmed as “action-RPG,” and the listed hardware is Vita and PS3.
One interesting point in the listings page is the inclusion of the Unity engine. Square Enix is known for building their game engines from scratch, but a turn to Unity indicates they’re becoming increasingly accepting of third party solutions.
It’s worth noting that the listings do not specifically say they are for Square Enix positions, only that they are in reference to a game being developed by Square Enix’s 1st Production Department. The company could be outsourcing some tasks to a smaller developer or individuals, or they could be hiring new employees.
Either way, it’s safe to say whatever project is in development will be in development for some time to come.
What Square Enix game would you hope to see on Vita?

American Arcade Business is back in High Score
Remember when you didn't play games at home? No not outside, I mean arcade games.
The old arcade. The smell of the old machines, the sounds with each beckon and call that will hopefully get you to pop a few dollars into it. Why? Just for your amusement. Well with movies like King of Kong and the rise in Arcade machines as trophy items for game collectors, TNT Amusements has struck a deal with production company PBR Productions to produce a reality show.
It's currently called High Score, but will be subject to change depending on who might pick it up. The show is about the "American Restoration" of the arcade machine and pinball world, with Todd Tuckey, the proprietor of TNT Amusements, leads a crew to hunt all over the country to find much-loved amusement machines of the past and restores them back to their working beauty.
The show is ripe for the picking as I actually know a mate of mine who's Dad has a hobby of restoring pinball machines and hiring them out for birthday parties. It's oddly a lucrative market and the show doesn't sound too bad. It'd follow Todd and his crew from acquisition to sale. The sales include going to a large clientell which include celebrities
“This show will help all the collecting world I think as it will get people re-interested in pinball machines and arcade video games! It's a win win for all” said Todd Tuckey of TNT Amuesments.
The crew at TNT Amusements is a lovable cast of characters that walk you through the restorations from start to finish. Tuckey is no stranger to screen as his success in the industry has led him to speaking engagements, for his own 30-minute television special, and being featured on the reality TV show “Kendra” (one of his clients). High Score is currently courting cable networks and other reality television distribution partners. A 22 minute pilot episode has already been created and you can view bits of the show above.
The series is produced and created by Nate Hall and Corey Armideo of Pioneers Beyond Reality. About TNT Amuesments TNT Amuesments is the worlds largest used game show room with over 120 pieces on display in a 4,000 square foot area, which if you think about it that will grow more and more as the show goes on.
Tuckey began a Video Game route in 1979, installing games in stores in the Philadelphia area, unfortunately by 1984, the boom had dried up and arcade parlours began to dry up. They now sit in the back of pizza places, basements and in the home's of video game generation adults, but Tuckey is on the hunt to find, fix and fully restore these machines back to their working glory, I'm pretty excited to see the show air.

If you're an avid Killzone 3 player, then you know that today is a big day for your game. Patch 1.10 is out today, bringing you more updates, features, and of course, bug fixes.
It's a long list, but to give you an idea on what to expect, we've got here the items listed under the New Features section:
Custom Games, Part 2. Additional information can be found at the bottom of the article, but it will include: choosing abilities, weapons and careers, as well as toggling functionality such as ribbons, skills and explosives.
Squad Only Chat. This is still an experimental feature and may not always function as expected.
Playing Audio/Music from your PS3 during MP games.
Marksman Improvements:
Cloak rippling effect has been increased.
Cloak now ripples with increased intensity when firing non silenced weapons.
Transition from uncloaked to cloaked has been extended.
A cloak fade transition between moving and not-moving has been introduced (player no longer snaps out of view).
Distance Indicator for off-screen medics.
Matchmaking. We will now make players switch faction automatically at the end of a round if teams are unbalanced. Note that this will only affect players that are not in a squad or that have sent an invite to create a squad, and that it will not happen at all in Clan games or Custom Games.
You can now only submit another grief report for the same person if at least 7 minutes have elapsed since the previous one.

This is one job listing that should pump up the hype in the industry. Guerrilla Games is being reported as opening several job positions, supposedly for their newest title.
This should be expected, considering that Herman Hulst himself did divulge last year that they would like to jump into a new IP as soon as they get done with Killzone 3. Well, KZ3 is done, and it looks like they're getting ready to roll out the next project.
Word has it that the developers are looking for an AI programmer, as well as a Senior Tech programmer.
For the Senior Tech programmer, here are the requirements:
Your skills are in the fields of graphics, audio, memory management, streaming, optimization or any combination thereof. The systems you produce are efficient and easy to maintain, and they do exactly what the end-user wants (regardless of whether that end user is a 3D artist, a sound director, a game designer or another coder). You encourage other people to be ambitious as well, but you always make sure to avoid unnecessary risks.”
Meanwhile, for the AI programmer:
“AI programmers design and implement new features for the AI systems. AI programmers also assist the design department in creating game play by creating and modifying NPC behavior”.
Again, we don't know for what project this could be, but some parties are indicating that it could very well be Killzone 4. But really, it could just about be anything.

Bethesda would rather go for quality over quantity. That's why according to Pete Hines, they're keeping their eyes on maintaining their portfolio small and tight.
Said Hines, the common mistake of big gaming companies is that they're spreading themselves out too thin, trying to juggle multiple titles all at one time, thereby diluting the quality of the said projects in effect.
"I have heard a lot of other compabies talking about 'well, we're going to focus on fewer triple-A titles, changing their philosophy - but they're changing it to something that we've always been structured towards, and believed in since I started at Bethesda in 1999," he told GamesIndustry.
The trick to keeping it relevant in the business is to "not trying to be in every genre."
"We don't go running after the latest, hottest trend," he said. "We tend to pay attention to what we're doing, we make the kind of games that we want to play, because we think there's an audience for those and we try as best we can to execute them to the highest level possible."
By keeping their portfolio small, they are able to ensure that each project gets the attention and detail that will guarantee that the fans get the quality games they deserve.
"We're not structured to put out 50 games a year and now suddnely we're only going ten, now we're laying people off left and right. We've been hiring and hiring non-stop for years, while other folks are laying off and downsizing."
And because they churn out quality titles, they manage to stay afloat despite the low number of games produced because as it turns out, "people just like good stuff."
"And if you market it well and you get people into what the game is about people like it. People want to play good stuff, they want to get value for they're paying for these games. So I think we do a pretty good job of delivering on that, making sure that when you buy a game from us that it's gonna be fun and different and unique from what you played last week, last month, last year."

Valve gets a new helping hand in the person of Doug Church, game designer who holds an impressive portfolio.
Included in the games he's worked on are the titles Ultima, Thief, and System Shock series. Previously working with EA Los Angeles as an execuive producer, Church has been confirmed by Doug Lombardi to have been with Valve already for about a couple of weeks. Lombardi, however, said he was not sure if and what specific project Church is working on right now.
In a previous recent with Church, back in 2004, he talked about how genres or labels restrict games from expressing different ideas.
He said then, "Sometimes I think that genre is our shorthand to talk about play, and that's about as specific as we'd get, because when I show you imagery of a lot of games and the communication message.
You know 'you're a powerful wizard', or 'you're going to defeat terrorists' or 'you're going to pilot planes', it doesn't really tell you anything about what you're going to actually do? Like: What are the verbs you have? What are the buttons you're going to use? What sort of mental action do you get? Why are you even there? Why isn't it just a movie?"

The uber-creatively talented team of Media Molecule seems to be working on a new title that will delight us all. They did not say anything official yet as to what it could be, but they did give us a hint in the form of job listing.
Over at their official site, Media Molecule has posted an advertisement calling out to interested programmers who can work on "portable platform". Hmmm... sounds like they've got something cooking for the new NGP.
The job listing is specifically asking for a Graphics Programmer, preferably someone who is "exceptional, in the human form of an experienced graphics programmer, to paint magic and wonder into our new world."
Here are the qualities they're looking for in the new recruit:
Self-motivated graphics programmer who can 'do it all' from tools to runtime
Works well with artists
You'll be the graphics lead! So experience or extreme talent is a must.
It's on a portable platform...
Hold it! Did you catch that last part right there? Yeah, the one on the platform bit, just one line above this one. Right. "On a portable platform". Now, they've done this before with LBP for the PSP. But could it be possible that they're making an entirely new IP specially designed for the NGP?
Alex Evans was contacted by Joystiq, and this was his curious reply: "Well spotted! However, at the moment I'm afraid we've got nothing to announce any projects... sorry. We'll have to leave the world speculating a little longer..."
And that, definitely we'll be doing!
