Activision plans to reveal all-new Skylanders at New York’s Toy Fair.
Are you familiar with Skylanders? If you’re not, here’s a primer: Skylanders is a combination toy and video game franchise, in which real-life plastic toys interact with a special “portal” for gaming consoles and become living, breathing in-game characters. Players can use any character for which they have the toy. Skylanders is, essentially, a machine engineered to harvest money from helpless parents. It’s also a pretty cool game.
At this week’s Toy Fair, Activision reportedly has plans to announce a few new figures in the Skylanders line-up. There are eight new special figures, all of which are “giant-sized” and feature special abilities. Some of them even light up when near the game portal. There will also be eight new regular Skylanders launched at the same time as the giants.
Skylanders has been a sales juggernaut, generating more money than any other new children’s IP last year. Now that Activision smells blood, you can bet more figures will be on the way at steady intervals.
Have you played Skylanders? What did you think?

All Aboard - Train Conductor 2: USA review
Voxel Agents new game has just hit the Android market and you better get on track.
I recently got an Android phone - my first smartphone - and whilst I was glad to have a navigational tool and have something to help me on my way, I was also looking forward to playing some of the games I'd constantly heard about. The games for the android aren't really dissimilar from those on the iPhone, but hey, I have an Android and I'm loving it, so why not check out a few games?
However, I was stumped from the get go, most of them I had heard in passing or were on the iTunes store, so I was drawing a blank. I eventually heard someone mention a new game called Train Conductor 2, a game by Australian Developers Voxel Agents. I was a bit hesitant at first, I mean how much fun can conducting trains really be.
The game is in the vein of games such as Flight Control, not just for it's transportation aspect, but also it's game mechanics of moving your desired mode of concern to where it's meant to be. I was going to get Flight Control, but I remembered that I'd purchased it off Steam some time ago and think that was enough. Flight Control is a bit repetitive and the music - while catchy - can be a bit repetitive. Train Conductor 2, never has that problem.
I often praise games with great sound and music, but I always feel like some games just capture the spirit of where it's set or where they're coming from when it comes to the sound design and music, TC2 definitely has that . The game takes place in the greatest country in the world: America - if you didn't get that from the title. You play a train conductor in Miami, initially and you have the cool sounds of a breeze and the gulls then a nice bit of funk begins to play as you're told by a red-headed girl that you will need to make sure these trains get to where they're going.
It's as simple as that, four tracks, several trains, no time limit and  you have to make sure they don't crash into one another. The game is quite leanient with close calls with the game which add to the excitement, but if your trains are going to crash, they will crash. The game relies on fast reflexes and strategy, as you see one track light up, you may have to stop another train in it's tracks on number 4, just so you can slide the next one in from number 2, but wait, there's another one coming from number 1, what do you do then?
The game's difficult curve is mixed with over 7 different levels, as each level is barely similar to the last. The Miami level focuses on you making sure you can just maneouvre your trains from one track to the next, but once it becomes dark, the night takes over the game. Ghosts and Aliens roam the American countryside messing with your trains. These are my favourite levels as they aren't restricted to the game's toughest mechanic of crossing trains while making a move. The ghosts and demon trains will simply float through one another and it is magnficent during the challenge maps to see ten of them flow perfectly to where they're going in just a matter of seconds.
The game looks fantastic and has 3-D trains on a fairly 2-D background, but there's always something going on. During the Miami level, a shark swims under the bridged tracks, during the Roswell level, you'll see agents come and go and during the New York level, the underground can be quite lively. The game really situates itself with it's location and even though it kind of uses stereotypes, it never really detracts from the game. It's a bit like if they sat down with a big whiteboard and started with a bunch of levels and then just listed everything they could about those cities. Oh and finally, the character design of the girl is incredibly well-done and cute even. But during the Seattle level, she seems to have a minor crazy streak when you run over a yeti, saying  I don't know what that was "but I liked crushing it."
In fact, I tried doing the tutorial later on to show someone she said that and she followed it up with "I feel like a sandwich," despite the lack of voices I feel like they have her character, if a bit mentally skewed, down to a T. Oh and there's also some evil guy during the ghost levels, but I think he just runs an old amusement park and is getting away with it, due to a lack of meddling kids.
The game looks like a triple-A title from the guys at Rovio or Half-Brick but it's just an indie studio here in Australia. The game's design and music is never boring or ever a problem, and levelling up to the next map is never a chore as it accumulate's how many trains you've conducted over the entire game. The levels do get a little bit out there at times with the paranormal levels such as the Seattle level where yeti-like creatures hide in the snow and block your path. I was half expecting Bigfoot to slowly come in Frogger style and cause havoc with the tracks and then you'd have to fix them.
The game has some strong leaderboards, even with a few thousand downloads and I cannot reccommend this any more than I have above. I know I'm usually meant to critique these games harshly but I feel like this is one of those games that just knows everything about what it's doing. The only criticism I have is that I wish there were more levels and that there were a Free trial version for iPhone users. I think the game is almost perfect, even for just a mobile game, I could imagine it being a great little XBLA or Steam game that you could smack on for a few minutes and enjoy yourself.

In news that should surprise exactly no one, the series producer confirms that another “stealthy” Metal Gear game will eventually be released.
There’s been a lot of Metal Gear Solid talk recently, what with rumors of MGS5 and the VGA unveiling of the trailer for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (dumbest title of all time). While the first game has been confirmed to still be in the theoretical phase, and the second isn’t exactly a follow-up to any other Metal Gear game, fans of the main franchise will be happy to learn that they will eventually get their wish – a new Metal Gear game based on stealth and cunning.
Happy, but not surprised. Everyone knows that Metal Gear Solid 5 will come out someday, though Hideo Kojima’s cryptic quote only indicates that a sequel is coming sometime in the future. It’s about as cagey as a response can be, but Kojima likely needs to play this close to the chest until he has something official to announce.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is not a part of the main MGS canon, and is intended to simply be looked upon as a fun spin-off. Kojima noted that the original vision for that specific game was pretty close to what Platinum Games has come up with, so hopefully that will calm some of the hardcore fans unsure about where exactly their franchise is heading.
In the meantime, look for Metal Gear Solid 5 somewhere at some time. At least we know it’s coming, right?

The Metal Gear games have never really been my cup of tea. It's been a tea often filled with blood and corn and whilst I like both of those things from time to time, it's hard to take it seriously when that tea is splashed in with some terrible dialogue.
That terrible dialogue continues in Metal Gear Rising...

Tomorrow’s 2GB Battlefield patch brings bug fixes, balance changes, and a few other goodies.
We knew that a Battlefield 3 patch was on the way, and we knew that it resolved a few glaring issues (like the tactical light – get it!? Glaring?!), but the full extent of the patch wasn’t really clear until the full patch notes went public. After a quick glance through, it’s obvious DICE is serious about keeping their game as balanced and fun as possible.
The bulk of the 2GB patch is content for the upcoming Back to Karkand DLC pack, but the rest is all adjustments to existing game mechanics. Among the fixes? A big nerf to mortars, a buff to jet cannons, spawn point adjustment and a ton of tiny tweaks to weapons. Here’s the full list of changes, courtesy of Battlelog:
Bugfixes
• Fixed a problem with spawn timer now showing blue border on startup and lost spawn point
• Fixed a problem where player who joined queuing on End of round got spawn screen stuck on screen, but unable to do anything with it until next round loaded
• Fixed a problem where camera would change to 3rd person on killcam when killcam was turned off in server settings
• Fixed stat references on several dogtags
• Fixed for surveillance ribbon not counting TUGS
• Fixed a missing combat area lines on the minimap for Grand Bazaar conquest small
• Moved a tank spawn in US base on Caspian Border so it would not be destroyed by a falling tree
• Fixed a problem where placing C4 with the russians soldier was playing US faction VO
• Fixed a problem where TV guided missiles could be shot into its own helicopter and destroy it
• Fixed a problem when attempting to fire lock on weapons without a target
• Tweaked the chat, it should now be a bit easier to read
• Fixed several vehicles that did not properly shoot rockets and guns towards their predictive sights
• Fixed the G17 Supressed Laser not working properly
• Added alternate HUD colors to help colorblinds
• Added a network interpolation setting. This allows users with good bandwidth reduce latency, but might increase some stuttering. The user can find what works best for his connection by tweaking the slider.
• Increased the Spawn protection radius on TDM
• Fixed a problem with smoke on land vehicles, Missiles should now miss more often
• Fixed a problem where users could end up with IRNV scope in any vehicle
• Fixed a problem where player dies if vaulting over a ledge and into water while sprinting
• Fixed several crashes and increased general stability
• Fixed a problem where the user was unable to revive two players that have the bodies one over the other
• Fixed so you can assign an axis and use as a digital input. This makes it possible for the player (on pc) to assign one of the sticks on a gameped to be used for throttle/brake.
• Fixed a problem with the Kill camera acting up when suiciding from parachute
• Fixed air radar was showing to much. now lasertagged, heatsignature above threshold, enemy missiles and capture points are only visible on air radar
• Fixed a problem where the game would enter a technical hang if the user pressed pause menu and tilde at the same time
• Fixed a problem where you could get green flashes on screen
• You can now reassign cycle weapons
• Fixed so the weapon zooms automatically after bipod deploy is gone when using zoom toggle
• Fixed a problem where the parachute would stay stuck in air if the owner was killed
Balance Tweaks
• Fixed several weapons so they are properly suppressed and hide the player on the minimap when fired.
• Tweaked Tactical Light so it is not as blinding over longer ranges.
• Tweaked the IRNV scope so it is limited to usage only at close range.
• Reduced heat masking effectiveness of Spec Ops Camo.
• Fixed a bug where Ammo spec would give additional 40mm grenades instead of Frag spec.
• Increased the number of additional 40mm grenades from Frag spec.
• Fixed so AT mines only live for 20 seconds after a player dies to prevent infinite mines.
• Increased the Time to Live on sniper caliber rounds to allow extreme distance shots.
• Fixed several weapon descriptions, calibers, and fire rates. The weapons themselves have not changed.
• Fixed so the M9 and MP443 pistol can be equipped by the opposing faction when it is unlocked at 100 kills.
• Fixed Laser Guided Missiles missing their targets if the target is moving too fast.
• Reduced the effectiveness of Stealth on Air Vehicles.
• Reduced the effectiveness of Beam Scanning for Jets.
• Reduced the damage done to Armored Vehicles and Infantry from AA guns.
• Increased the damage RPGs and Tank shells do to AA vehicles.
• Slightly decreased the accuracy for all weapons on fully automatic, burst fire is now preferable at mid to long range.
• Increased the effective accuracy of long bursts for LMGs when using a bipod.
• Slightly increased the range of the 44magnum bullets.
• Increased the close range damage of 4.6x30mm and 5.7x28mm bullets.
• Increased the reload time of the Mortar from 3.5sec to 4.8sec and increased the time it takes before a shell hits the ground.
• Reduced the aimed accuracy bonus given by a Suppressor for the MP7, P90, PP2000, PP-19, and UMP45.
• Increased the range and FOV for designating targets with the SOFLAM and vehicle Laser Designators.
• Decreased the effectiveness of 12g FRAG ammo when equipped on semi-automatic and automatic shotguns.
• Slightly Increased the power of Fighter Jet Cannons against all vehicle targets, especially Helicopters.
• Decreased the power of Miniguns against Jets and Helicopters.
• Increased the power of Stingers against Jets.
• Flares reload times for Jets and Helicopter Gunners have been increased.
• Tweaked the AN94 so its burst fire better conveys the real world advantage offered by this weapon.
• Added Single Shot to the AN94 as an available fire mode.
• Slightly increased the recoil on the M416 and removed the Burst Fire mode (this weapon incorrectly had burst fire, which was not authentic).
• Tweaked the spawns for TDM on Kharg Island, Grand Bazaar, Caspian Border, Seine Crossing, Operation Firestorm, Damavand Peak and Noshahar Canals
• Moved a tank spawn in US base on Caspian Border so it would not be destroyed by a falling tree
• Tweaked the Gas station Capture area on Conquest on Caspian Border
• Tweaked the max vehicle height on Noshahar Canals
So there’s that. See anything you like?

Official PlayStation Magazine UK gives the internet and gaming press a story to run with – too bad it wasn’t true.
You may remember hearing the distant sound of cheers and trumpets last week as the entire Internet, QJ included, rose to its feet to celebrate the official announcement of Metal Gear Solid 5. The game, which had been in rumor form for years, was confirmed by Official PlayStation Magazine UK, or at least it seemed like the game was confirmed.
Sadly for all of your MGS fans, it looks like the magazine may have slightly (or greatly) exaggerated the existence of Metal Gear Solid 5, but was content to let the story ride as hype built for its new issue.
Nearly every gaming news site ran with the story, based entirely on the cover blurb from the issue. But since no one had access to the article, one very important detail was lost in the shuffle: they’re not actually working on MGS 5 at all.
The magazine promised “Metal Gear Solid 5 details” on its cover, which it supposedly gleaned from its interview with Metal Gear producer Hideo Kojima. Of course, the actual quote says something a little different:
“I think we’ll probably have to make it [MGS5] at some point, but what that will be, we have no idea. As far as my involvement in the project is concerned, it probably won’t be as much as it was with MGS1--maybe I can do just one stage! For MGS1 I made the maps myself, laid out the enemy routes myself, did everything hands-on--that level I can’t do again.”
Nothing about that quote indicates that MGS5 is in development. All it indicates is that they’ve considered doing a new Metal Gear Solid game, but they currently have no clue what to do with it. That’s a far cry from “details.” The game will probably be made eventually, but the information on the magazine’s cover is slanted at best and a fabrication at worst.
Ridiculous. Sorry for the wrong information folks, and shame on the magazine for purposefully duping the gaming populace.

Haven’t had enough Battlefield 3 news yet? Then check out this update on multiplayer maps! Paris never looked so good.
As I said earlier in the week, it’s inevitable that we’re going to see a massive push of Battlefield 3 information in the final weeks before its release. With the beta over, EA needs a steady stream of information to keep people talking about the title. So, today over on the official Battlefield blog, they’ve gone ahead and released some information on the nine multiplayer maps that will be included at launch.
Here’s the breakdown on a few of the maps, but you should check out the BF3 blog for the screenshot gallery and further details:
OPERATION FIRESTORM
One of our largest and most vehicle-friendly map, Operation Firestorm is the classic Battlefield gameplay taken to the extremes. Size-wise, and with some puzzle skills, you could actually place three Atacama Deserts -- one of the largest maps from Battlefield: Bad Company 2 -- within the playable area of Operation Firestorm. This is a wide-open desert map where the burning oil fields in one direction are contrasted by clear blue sky in the other direction. Construction sites dotting the area bring interesting possibilities for infantry to hide in elevated positions, spot vehicles, and take them down by mortar or RPG.
OPERATION MÉTRO
Operation Métro is the map from E3 and the Open Beta, so some of you are familiar with it already. It is a map that perfectly illustrates that we want to take our players on a journey. Especially in Rush, you can see how Operation Métro is almost three maps within one: You start out in a lush park, then move into a bombed-out section of the subway tunnels, to finally emerge in a dense urban environment outside the Paris stock exchange. It’s a map that asks you to constantly adapt your class and load out for the diverse situations you will find yourself in.
TEHRAN HIGHWAY
One of the inspirations for this map was a photo of a night time skyline of Tehran which now is basically the same vista that is available in the game. You start up on the hills above the city outskirts and eventually work your way into town. This atmospheric night-time map, where you can see rockets lighting up the sky, has a balanced mix between vehicle and infantry focus. It plays length-wise and starts semi-open with plenty of room for vehicles, but ends on a much more urban and tight note with less focus on vehicles and more on infantry.
DAMAVAND PEAK
Damavand Peak, internally known as Base Jump, is built on the idea that we want players to be able to base jump, and features our most extreme height differences ever in a Battlefield map. Attackers in Rush and Squad Rush will start high up on a mountain ridge above a mining facility. The only way down into the valley is to somehow make the 500 meter descent. The further the attackers progress in the map, the more vehicle warfare will be present. There is also a large tunnel section dug into the mountain side at the bottom of the map, and the view when you look up at the starting location is spectacular.
I certainly appreciate the information, but I’m not sure it’s possible for me to be more excited about the game. What about you?
