If you’re terrified that your Kinect is beaming your sensitive habits into space, Paul Harper has just the device for you.
Microsoft’s Kinect device is capable of reading human movements, understanding 3D space and a whole host of other cool things (as evidenced by the modding community). It’s also, apparently, quite handy as a clandestine advertising tool.
Dennis Durkin, vice president of Microsoft’s gaming division, noted a couple of years back that the Kinect could potentially be used to gather information for advertisers. For example, the device could read recognizable product logos in your home and use that data to put together a tailored ad package based on your habits.
It’s pretty intrusive stuff, and even if Microsoft hasn’t taken advantage of the technology yet, there’s always the possibility they could. Which is why Paul Harper has invented the Pritect. It’s not particularly advanced—just a black cover you slip over your Kinect when you’re not using it to bust moves. The cover stops the device from pulling data, and protects it from dust buildup.
If you’re the type of person that’s concerned over Microsoft tracking your out-of-game habits, you can pick up a Pritect for $14.99.
Alternatively, you could stop acting crazy.

EA notes that vitriol from players regarding its unnecessary Origin software is on the decline, and asks for a two-year window to make the service useful.
Origin is a piece of shit. What’s worse, it’s an unnecessary piece of shit. What Origin stumbles through, Steam already had mastered. And the only reason Origin even exists at this point is EA stripping its games from a far superior digital distribution platform and forcing a proprietary service down everyone’s throats. It’s nothing less than a digital coup, and an ugly one at that.
Origin has, naturally, seen its fair share of hate. Most of this hate stems from feelings like those mentioned above, with a bit left over for the terrible customer service offered by the platform. However, EA sees a few rays of light poking through the hate clouds. Chief operating officer Peter Moore, who is largely responsible for the existence of Origin, believes that the software is just a couple of years away from being truly wonderful.
Moore stated that EA is looking for ways to make Origin more social and more interactive, as opposed to just a pipeline for the company to shovel games at players (at exorbitant prices). He also noted that criticism of the platform has mostly died down, and that gamers are learning to embrace Origin’s special brand of online functionality. Hey, when you make something mandatory, how can people not learn to use it?
His comments are actually sort of hilarious—Moore claims that the healthiest decision for the industry is providing players with a way to “shop around” on various services, while his company simultaneously pulls all of its games off competitor’s platforms. Nice one, EA. Regardless  of the hypocrisy, Moore does make a smart point when he says the service needs a couple of years; there’s no telling whether Origin will be better or worse in 2014.
What do you think of Origin? Do you see it as one more gaming tool on your PC, or an unwanted and forced intrusion by a greedy company?

Ó

Earlier in the week, we found out that Bioware’s latest sci-fi RPG would be getting a pre-release demo. Now we have some more info for players that can’t wait to catch up with Commander Shepard and his/her crew.
Mass Effect 3 is easily one of the most anticipated titles of 2012. The first two games were both enormous successes for Bioware and EA, and even if you weren’t stoked on the changes made in Mass Effect 2, it’s still hard to spot a better sci-fi RPG. If you just can’t wait until March to get your hands on Mass Effect 3, you can jump into the pre-release demo starting in January.
The Mass Effect demo will include both single and multiplayer game features, but here’s the catch – in order to qualify for the early access demo, you’ll need to register an online pass from Battlefield 3. This won’t be a problem for the million or so people that have already pre-ordered BF3 and are stoked on playing, but some of those Call of Duty MW3 fans may be upset at the news. It does look like there will be an alternative method for getting in, but it’s not clear quite yet.
Here’s the full post, straight from the Bioware forums:
What are the details of the Mass Effect 3 pre-release demo?
•The Mass Effect 3 pre-release demo will launch in January 2012 (exact date TBA).
•The demo will include both single-player and multi-player sections.
•The demo will be released in all regions where the game is
How can I get early access to the multi-player portion of the Mass Effect 3 demo coming in January 2012?
•Owners of Battlefield 3, on any platform, who activate their Online Pass will automatically be granted early access to the multiplayer portion of the Mass Effect 3 demo. There is no need to enter any other codes, the early access will be applied to the EA Account associated with the Online Pass. Note: BF3 Origin Customers automatically have the BF3 Online Pass.
•This applies to all regions where the demo is released (to be announced)
•The exact date of the demo launch will be announced in late November
•There will be another program whereby players and fans of the Mass Effect franchise can unlock this early access (with no purchase necessary) – this will also be announced in late November or early December.
•There will also be a tool posted on www.masseffect.com allowing players to check if their EA account has been granted the early access.
•The length of the early access period is TBA.
•The single-player section of the demo will be available to all players on day one of the demo launch.
2012 is shaping up to be a massive year for gaming. Mass Effect 3, StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm, BioShock Infinite, Soul Calibur 5 and Final Fantasy XIII-2 are all headed our way in a relatively short period of time, so you’d better finish up your 2011 games fast (Skyrim!).
Are you excited about Mass Effect 3? Will you play the demo, or wait for the full release?

The quirky Nintendo DS word puzzle game shows up in the iTunes store and supports iOS 5’s cloud-saving technology.
Scribblenauts is a game that depends as heavily on your imagination as it does on your vocabulary. Instead of providing you with a puzzle and a few tools to use to solve it, Scribblenauts instead asks you to invent your own tools. This added element makes the game more fun and gives it much greater replay value.
Now, a “remastered” version of the title is available for your iPhone or iPad device. The game boasts levels from both Nintendo DS titles in addition to a few new ones designed exclusively for iOS devices. All of the controls have been translated into touch commands, naturally, but the bulk of the gameplay remains the same – type words, use items, solve puzzles.
You’ll also be able to save your game via the new iOS 5 iCloud functionality, which allows you to save your game at any time on your iPhone or iPad and pick up from right where you left off with another device. So if you run out of time while playing on the subway, for instance, you can resume the same puzzle a few hours later from the comfort of your living room.
Scribblenauts recognizes thousands of words, so the more creative you are with your solutions, the more fun you can have. Here’s a quote on the game from Samantha Ryan, the Senior Vice President of Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment’s Production and Development branch (whew):
““Players can let their imaginations run wild by solving challenges with objects they’ve created such as a ‘colossal, winged, rainbow car’ or a ‘shy, frost-breathing, robotic hippopotamus,’ and easily share the results with their friends.”
Scribblenauts is available as of today and both the iPhone and iPad versions of the game will run you $4.99.
Are you excited to see ports of great games slowly making their way to iOS devices?

Many fans were aghast at the prospect that Uncharted 3 will not have its own dedicated servers, and will instead have to rely on peer-to-peer connections. To allay your concerns, Naughty Dog has spoken out about it.
This desire to explain came up when a disappointed player, trying out the game's multiplayer beta, raised his issues directly to the publisher via Twitter. Here is Naughty Dog's response:
"We're not going to have dedicated servers, made that decision long time ago + we built current player host-client architecture. Decision for that server architecture was to be better able to support our fans long-term if we can/want.
The cost delta between dedicated & non-dedicated is huge long term. Eventually someone will say it costs too great + shut them down. My personal hope is that by keeping costs down + strong enough community, we could be in a position to consider 4+ yrs of uptime."
It kind of makes you wonder why Naughty Dog would even think of taking out an essential tool to make sure that gamers experience the game flawlessly for the purpose of cutting down costs. With the success of the past two iterations of the franchise, you'd think they'd be able to afford a basic gaming need such as dedicated servers. Hopefully, this doesn't hurt the game too much.
Oh, but wait. Maybe if it does, then they'll reconsider. Uncharted 3 comes out November 1st for North America, and Europe recently got their date moved up to November 2nd, positioning the game for a near-simultaneous launch.

Like any other product out in the market, video games are vulnerable to public reaction. If they deem something improper or not akin to their sensitive tastes, they can call for a movement to ban these titles. If banning is not feasible, then other alternatives are there to ensure that the said game does not get support from the consumers, such as by calling for a boycott.
The most recent controversy involving a video game in a boycott is EA's Battlefield 3. The call for boycott was forwarded by online link-sharing community Reddit, upon the "unfair advantage" they have spotted with the pre-order goods. But that's just one sample right there.
Throughout the years, boycotts range from pervertly-themed games to outright violent ones. The Columbine game received such violent reaction that it had to be pulled down. Ubisoft's We Dare also got the cold treatment from concerned parents, even at just its mere concept, that the publisher eventually had to call it off.
From a consumers' standpoint, it is definitely a powerful tool that we can wield when things get rough for us. The idea of having games boycotted is enough to send cold sweat trickling down a publisher's spine. And really, it's just about one of the very few options consumers have to keep companies and their sometimes overzealous, poorly-concealed attempts at getting more money than they actually deserve in check.
For some instances, though, it becomes more of a nuisance instead of a helpful tool. What about you, do you think boycotts are effective, or are they just empty threats?

Publisher EA has set their eyes on the competition, and they've named it to be Activision.
Since they're coming out with Battlefield 3, they've thereby proclaimed Modern Warfare 3 as the obvious competition for it. EA president Frank Gibeau proclaimed that it's "going into a heavyweight fight" with MW3, that Battlefield 3 is, definitely.
And although MW3 may have a "25 million head start", Gibeau remains confident that their game will be able to offer "a generational breakthrough in terms of technology."
Another thing they're looking forward to is the alternation of their franchises so that they can go head to head with the annual CoD franchise. "Battlefield and Medal of Honor will be a part of a rotation that we go after the shooter category with... the Medal of Honor and Battlefield teams are now operating in the same group together so they can share tools, technologies, innovations, without feeling like the same games."
"We have a [Battlefield 3] team that's been together for ten years. The Medal of Honor team was fairly new, they were using middleware and software that had already been out there, so... They're a great team, and we're going to continue to invest in them, but we're going to approach it slightly different than we did before."
