Valve drops a ton of new in-game items and a brand new map to celebrate its Australian Christmas event.
Love hats? You’re in luck, for Valve has officially dropped its latest Team Fortress 2 update, titled Australian Christmas. The update is packed to the gills with completely unnecessary items for your TF2 character, including more hats than one person could possibly need. Still, it’s fun to see Valve treating their game with so much love.
There’s a lot going on in this update, so you should check out the full list of changes if you’re interested. If you don’t have time, here’s a quick rundown on what you can expect:
New map –Foundry
New weapons
New hats and items from the Steam Workshop
All-new achievements
75% off certain items in the Mann Supply Co. Store
If you want to get in on the festivities, you’ll need to play Team Fortress 2 while the event is live. Some of the items can only be looted through “Nice” crates, which in turn only spawn while the event is active. So get on it – it’s not like you have any other games to play right now, right?

Germany Unbans Quake
Hang on, I'm looking up...what's German for too little too late?
The classic id software game Quake has finally become available to play in Germany for the first time in almost a decade and a half. The amazing FPS was developed sometime between Theme Hospital and Half Life 1 and Germany thought it was a good idea to protect the entire country from it's frightening blocky embrace by banning it outright.
The decision came after August when the other famous id software shooters, Doom and Doom 2 were released from the Kraken-like prison of being apart of Germany's large selection of banned games. Whilst the game was a bit of tech wizardry back in 1996, the 3D engine was fanastically rendered and actually helped shape the way we play games today, as the original Team Fortress mod was on the Quake Engine.
According to Heise Online, game publishers can request that their games be removed after a minimum of ten years from the Youth Media Endangerment list. Recently added to that list was the 2011 release of Dead Island, so Germans will probably see that come out in what, 2021? It's not worth it, Germans, not heaps anyway.
Other than possibly games like RapeLay, I feel that banning media unless it's particularly harmful is wrong and ridiculous in this age of internet. If people want something, they're gonna find anyway or means to get it. I wonder how many German people have played Quake. I remember a great friend of mine telling me when he went to an internet café in Germany and he was asked for ID after slamming down some Euros, he laughed so hard initially then he saw how serious the guy behind the counter was and slipped away.

The PC version isn’t due until the 18th, but you can get an early start with the iOS version launching in just 24 hours.
Minecraft is ever so close to official release, with just two days remaining for those of us that are excited to get our hands on the final product. In celebration of the full game finally hitting stores and digital download services, Mojang is pushing the iOS version of the game live starting tomorrow. If you have an iOS device, this marks a fun opportunity to work on your mine or build up your fortress while you’re sitting on the train or waiting for a movie to start.
Android gamers have been enjoying Minecraft since October, but iPad and iPhone owners have unfortunately been left out in the cold until just now in terms of exciting new iOS games. Those of us that use iOS devices have had to stick with Scribblenauts and Fruit Ninja, which, admittedly, aren’t terrible selections. But, no more!
The mobile version of Minecraft, titled Minecraft: Pocket Edition is a simplified version of the full PC title. You’ll still load into randomly generated worlds, and you’ll still be able to build things out of a variety of blocks. What would really be nice is if you could access your normal Minecraft world on your tablet or phone, making some quick progress when you have a short break during the day. Sadly, that feature is nowhere to be found.
Minecraft hits the iTunes store tomorrow and will likely be priced around $5-10. Are you going to pick it up, or are you waiting for the PC release?

Valve continues their recent trend of adding ridiculous costumes and hats to Team Fortress 2 with a Saints Row: The Third costume for your Heavy.
There was a time when characters in Team Fortress 2 looked like characters from Team Fortress 2. Nowadays, most TF2 matches play out like a gathering of the “Club for Silly Hats,” which, honestly, makes the game even more fun. Hate on the hats all you want, the same basic gameplay still fuels an engaging and often hilarious experience.
Valve isn’t showing any sign of slowing TF2 accessory development, and has announced this special costume for your Heavy if you pre-order Saints Row on Steam.
If you’ve ever wanted to charge around Dustbowl with a Luchador mask and diamond boxing gloves, this is certainly the pre-order bonus for you. It’s cute to see developers promoting each other’s games – if only more companies could get in on this sort of thing, the whole industry might be a little more fun. After all, who wouldn’t want a Master Chief costume for their Commander Shepard, or a Mario hat for their Drake?
Right?

The PC version of this quirky strategy game is getting an expansion, titled “Lost Adventures.”
Orcs Must Die! is the perfect story of what a small developer can do with a fun idea and the right game mechanics. The game, which takes the concept of tower defense and combines with with a third-person action game, has been a remarkable success in every market it enters, and critical praise has been as high as player enthusiasm.
If you’re a fan of Orcs Must Die! but haven’t had your fill of killing monsters, you’re in luck – the Lost Adventures DLC pack is on its way November 8th. Sadly, this update will only be available to PC players for the time being, so if you downloaded the game on Live Arcade or PSN you’re going to have to wait.
This is the second such DLC for Orcs Must Die! and includes five new fortresses, to new enemy types, the implementation of a leaderboard and a few other bonuses as well. The DLC will be priced at $2.99.

Valve continues their legacy of awesome and free downloadable content by giving Portal fans a way to make their own levels right in the game engine.
The Portal 2 authoring tools have been available for some time, but if you’re like me you probably downloaded them, installed them, fired them up and then immediately shut them off once you realized how overwhelming it would actually be to build a level in the editor. I’ve always loved Halo’s Forge mode, but the authoring tools for Team Fortress and Portal have remained a little out of my league.
It looks like Valve is hoping to change all that, recently announcing that their next bit of downloadable Portal 2 content would include an in-game editor. Valve also indicated that you’ll be able to design levels for both single player and co-op, opening up the depth of design pretty far for amateur level builders. The thought of building a co-op Portal level is absolutely insane to me, but perhaps there are some passionate gamers out the
If you’re not into creating your own levels but still want to get some new challenges for your Portal gun, you’ll be able to play any levels created by users, as well as vote on them based on how much you enjoyed your experience. With a robust player community, this is sure to lengthen the shelf life of the Portal series dramatically – as long as there are new puzzles to solve, you’ll always have something to look forward to.
Are you going to experiment with the Portal 2 level editor? It drops early next year.

The incredible and often hilarious two-dimensional adaptation of Valve’s “Team Fortress 2” is now out and available for free download.
This week is truly the week of the free game. First, “The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures” drops on the Nintendo eShop, then “Monster Trouble” goes free to play on iOs devices, and now we’re graced with yet another free way to waste our valuable time: “Team Fortress Arcade.”
“Team Fortress Arcade” is a simple reimagining of the super-popular and often incredibly frustrating “Team Fortress 2.” In the arcade version, however, instead of capping points, sapping sentries and (if you play like me) healing the other team’s spies, you play the role of hero in a two-dimensional, 8-bit side-scroller.
The game was developed by Eric Ruth, who Valve fans may recognize as the mastermind behind a similar remake of Left 4 Dead. You can play “Team Fortress Arcade” alone, or you can grab up to three friends to triple-tag team the game’s enemies and bosses. Players are able to choose any of the nine classes from the original “Team Fortress 2,” though I would wager you’re insane to plan anything but Heavy.
Every player serves the Blu team, fighting off minor red bad guys until facing off with a class-based villain. Each villain strives to capture the most annoying parts of his representative class, so be prepared to shout some obscenities while the Scout bounces all over the screen.
Check out “Team Fortress Arcade” and read an interview with Eric Ruth on Piki Geek.
Also, if you’ve never played “Team Fortress 2” (shame on you!) it’s also free to download and play via Steam. Silly hats, however, are not included. You can check that out right here: Team Fortress 2.

It definitely is a milestone for Valve, having over 35 million subscribers to their online download service, Steam.
To celebrate, they've pimped out their classic "Open Your Mind" logo, you know, that bald head with the red valve stuck to it.
The video you'll see below apparently shows off that makeover, although you might have to squint your eyes to take a closer look, as it's pretty subtle.
Just last year, Steam reported that they broke the 30 million mark. Within the past year from that point, they opened Team Fortress 2 as free-to-play. No doubt a significant chunk of that additional 5 million are TF2 fans.
Recently, Steam got into a tussle with EA Origins, although both parties insisted on denying any competition, with EA games being pulled out of Steam. They now claim that they have settled whatever differences they might have had. Steam also announced a couple of months back their newest feature, Steam Trading, which caused quite a stir in the community.
