Rollerblades, spray-paint and one of the best game soundtracks of all time are headed your way.
If you were one of the lucky folks that got your hands on a Dreamcast before the console imploded and took Sega down with it, you probably had a copy of Jet Set Radio. If not, here’s a quick breakdown: you rollerblade around a city and spray-paint things as you go. That’s about it, but for some reason it’s awesome.
If you never had a chance to play Jet Set Radio, today is your lucky day. Sega has just announced that the game will be making its long-awaited comeback sometime in 2012, in the form of a downloadable title on both PSN and Xbox Live Arcade.
It’s been 12 years since the original title hit shelves, so it will be interesting to see how the game holds up. No information is available on an exact release date, a price or whether the company will be making improvements to the game.
Would you like to see Jet Set Radio HD? Or a straight port of the original?

Wii U controller: More secrets revealed
The next-gen console is more than meets the eye.
With the recent announcment of the Nintendo Network.
Just when you think you know everything about Nintendo's innovative -- and risky -- new Wii U tablet controller, the company throws another factor into the mix.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed this week that the touch-enabled controller will also implement near-field communication (NFC) tech. As an NFC device, the controller will be able to interact with objects equipped with NFC tags.
It's the same set of standards used in some smartphones and smart cards. By touching an NFC-tagged item -- or bringing it in very close range -- with an NFC device, the objects interact via radio communication.
"By installing this functionality, it will become possible to create cards and figurines that can electronically read and write data via noncontact NFC and to expand the new play format in the video game world," Iwata said during an earnings briefing.
"Adoption of this functionality will enable various other possibilities such as using it as a means of making micropayments," he said, a hint at Nintendo's expanding digital distribution plans.
NFC technology has been around for years. But for game development, one interesting implementation of NFC only recently saw commercial release: Activision's console game Skylanders, in which players can buy NFC-tagged figurines, place them on an NFC-equipped pod, and bring those figurines to life in-game.
Iwata described the tech in terms of the Wii U, but did not give specifics on implementation. "The NFC I'm referring to here is the noncontact NFC standard that is compatible with FeliCa and MIFARE, and is expected to be widely used around the world in the near future," he said.

Leaked Stalked 2 Art

The Stalker Developers may be closing down, was this what they were working on?
The Stalker series is known for having some of the most realistic style of gameplay this side of Minecraft. The game drops you in a nuclear ravaged wasteland and shakes you till you cry in the middle of a country side surrounded by nuclear powered dogs. The game's subsequent releases such as Clear Sky opened up the game even further to what was going on in the radioactive landscape, but a sequel is what most people were hankering for.
Now with rumours of GSC closing down it may be that those holding out for Stalker 2, may be holding out forever. The news so sudden, most people think that may be just a downsizing of the company, but it may be the final notice for GSC Game World. I feel bad because the Stalker series was so fantastically detailed and difficult, more games should have learnt from STALKER rather than move away from it.
Anyway, the original game is still fairly cheap on Steam and here are some leaked art for the game thanks to the guys at Rock Paper Shotgun...
If this is the end of GSC Game World, it's gonna be a damn shame that a game that could have looked like this will never be made.

The new dashboard for the Xbox 360 launches this week, but it may be missing a few of its most anticipated features.
If you were excited about bringing your favorite television shows to your Xbox dashboard, you may be in for a bit of bad news this morning, as it looks like some of the bigger partners for Microsoft’ big re-launch aren’t quite ready to send their services to the console. Xfinity, Verizon, HBO and the UFC are all reporting that their services will unfortunately be unavailable at launch, with a planned “early 2012” release.
It’s definitely a bummer for anyone that was expecting to merge their two services together, but for the most part this delay probably doesn’t affect most Xbox users. It does cause one to wonder whether Microsoft is actually ready to push the update live, or if they’re just rushing it out so they can meet the goal they set for themselves.
Here’s a full list of what to expect on the dashboard, and when, courtesy of Joystiq:

The PS3’s streaming music app gets a little much-needed love in the form of a small software update.
If you have a computer (which you must), then you’re probably aware of the existence of sites like Pandora and Last.fm. These streaming music sites allow you to choose a particular taste of music and listen to artists that fall within those parameters. It’s great for hitting the gym, or getting a bit of work done during the day.
Sony has its own version of this streaming music software, called Music Unlimited. It’s sort of under the radar, but a recent PS3 software update is aimed at bringing it up to speed with its much larger competitors.
If you use Music Unlimited, or want to try it out, here’s what you’ll find in the new, updated version:
• My Channels – Allows you to build radio stations around an artist
• Dislike Button – Allows you to flag music you don’t enjoy
• Playlist creation on the fly
Of course, Sony has retained the membership fees, with a basic packaged running $3.99 per month. If you want unlimited playback, you’ll have to upgrade to the premium package for $9.99 per month.
Speaking as someone that’s never run over my free Pandora hours, I can’t imagine paying for streaming music. But, then again, I’m sure there are folks that burn up their music streams much more quickly than I.
So, what do you think of the Music Unlimited updates?

Ó

Let’s talk about some of the issues with Battlefield 3’s multiplayer, and why it sometimes feel like DICE may have released the game a pinch too soon.
I’m not a huge Battlefield fan. When I say that, what I mean is that I didn’t play the older games and don’t have any extreme allegiance to the brand. I do prefer Battlefield to Call of Duty due to the more realistic sniping mechanics and a greater focus on team play, but I’m not the sort of person that runs around preaching about which game is superior. I like Battlefield games, but I wouldn’t call them my favorites.
I picked up Battlefield 3 on launch day and have since been playing multiplayer whenever I have some down time. I should probably note that I have the Xbox 360 version, so some of the things I’m talking about may or may not be applicable to your personal experiences with the game. I’ve never put the campaign disc in the tray and I doubt I ever will, so I can’t really say much about the single player.
For the most part, multiplayer feels like a well-oiled machine. Most maps seem well planned and I’m getting a fair amount of fun from earning unlocks and capturing points. Though I’m focusing on complaints in this post, I do want to mention that I’ve had a good experience with the game overall.
Except for the following:
Origin/EA/Battlelog/Online Pass
I understand that creating loyalty is one of the key elements of managing a player base, but I play on a console. Having to create an EA account link it to an Origin, and then register an Online Pass via a website getting slammed by new players was a frustrating and unnecessary experience. I pay for Xbox Live – let me put my game in and play. I must say that I do really like Battelog, but the upfront inconvenience in getting started was pretty lame (and seems to be worse for PC players).
Scope Glare
Look, I play Recon. In fact, I play almost exclusively Recon. But, I play Recon – not “Camping sniper.” I spot targets, paint vehicles with the SOFLAM, capture points when I can and drop Radio Beacons. Anyway, in BF3 certain riflescopes have been given a glare effect to help limit the potential for camping. While I understand the mechanic, the glare is ridiculously bright, even in low-light situations. When I’m charging through a pitch black tunnel and I see something that looks like the north star shining out of the darkness, it shouldn’t turn out to be a scope. Needs to be toned down a bit.
Operation Metro CQ
If anyone out there has played Operation Metro in Conquest mode, you’ve probably noticed that the map is insanely unbalanced. Due to the map’s linear design and lack of flank routes, it’s much easier for the Russian team to capture point B and hold it. I would say that the majority of games I join for CQ end with Russia winning and the US losing – getting up and into point B can be quite a difficult feat. It’s also, for some reason, the only map that requires you to pass through one point to cap another – you can’t simply run around B to cap point A and put some pressure on, you have to go through point B first. Needs a little love for the US.
Jets
Jets are cool, I get it. But when I’m in a level with jets, it often seems like they’re playing a completely different game. I’m sure this is a failing of my teammates somewhere along the line, but all I ever see jets do is chase each other around and ignore everything that’s happening on the ground. Somewhere, someone has to have made a tutorial on how jets can apply to the ground game, so please watch it before you jump in the cockpit.
Technical issues
While the release version of Battlefield 3 is nowhere near as buggy as the beta, there are still a significant number of minor glitches and bugs. Texture pop, screen tear and a variety of weird clipping issues have shown up in my matches, with one in particular getting me killed (a two-inch step that has to be jumped over, since the character apparently can’t step). Also, the game often “forgets” which pistol I have equipped. Oh, and let’s not overlook the server issues – I always get a failed connection the first time I try and join.
So that’s a brief rundown of the common Battlefield issues I’m noticing. The list certainly isn’t comprehensive, but it’s made up of what has stood out to me as a player. Like I said before, they’re having a relatively minor impact on my play, but it’s still quite a few issues for a game that was supposed to be one of the best FPS experiences of all time.
If you’re playing Battlefield 3, what problems have you noticed that didn’t make the list?

Robert W. Baird & Co., an analyst firm, recently published a report, which indicates their expectation of the video game industry to experience further growth by 2014.
By how much, you ask? By an additional US$ 20 billion from where it stands today, potentially reaching above US$ 80 billion. That's a lot of money, and if based on that alone, then it looks like the industry is going to be in for a good run in the next couple of years.
The online aspect of gaming will further prove to be a force to be reckoned with, having downloadable content, social network games, and mobile releases being named as the biggest contributors in the years to come.
Said Colin Sebastian of Baird & Co, "Unlike newspapers, magazines, TV and radio, video game sales have accelerated since the advent of online and mobile platforms. And yes, we believe another video game is likely, with Sony already in development on a next-generation PlayStation."
Yes, he did say that. A new PlayStation is already in the works. All in all, this report spells nothing but good news to gamers all over. Hopefully, though, this increase in revenue for the industry will also mean improvement in the products that the companies will send out.

Ó

We first heard of Rage officially back in 2007. It took a pretty long while in development, and considering that it only came out a couple of weeks back - September 13th, 2011, to be precise - it's all understandable why people would come to expect topnotch quality, nothing less.
Setting aside the conflicting verdict of gamers and critics alike, though, did id Software brought this dilemma of high expectation upon themselves when they announced the game too early? According to id Software's Tim Willits, it "doesn't matter."
"The thing is John [Carmack] loves talking about cool stuff. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter. For us, now we're right around the corner and doing these events, the game's looking great, plays great. Whatever you're talking about it early or you talk about it late or you announce this or you announce that or you have this campaign or that campaign, all it comes down to is the game's fun. And the game's a heck lot of fun."
That's true, of course, insofar as ultimate considerations are concerned. If you remember, Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 5 also took way too long in the kitchen, much to the frustration of its loyal awaiting fans. Five years it stayed, there, yes, it did. But when it did come out, it did so with much hullaballoo and all the fanfare that Polyphony and Sony could afford. More importantly, it did live up to the hype, and the five-year waiting scheme for the game ended up being a legend of sorts.
The downside to announcing a game literally years ahead of its time, however, is that it keeps gamers at a sort of stale standstill. They're just waiting for the game to come out, they're being teased constantly (sometimes all too rarely), and the few bits of breadcrumbs offered to them end up not satisfying at all. If the game is hyped well enough, then the publishers need not worry because the curiosity will manage to sustain itself.
If the pacing is not timed properly however (i.e. when to go into radio silence, and when to come out with a deluge of information), then you end up with a game practically forgotten. Or if not forgotten, it's taken so long, people have lost interest in it anymore. Say, like Alan Wake.
Anyway, if id Software is happy with how Rage turned out, then so be it. Maybe it really was just because John Carmack couldn't keep a pretty secret to himself. He probably had an inkling how big a thing Rage could get, and so he didn't waste any more time keeping it a secret. They did take their precious time getting it out, though.
In the end, however, and as Tim Willits would like to put it, Rage came out with guns ablazing, and delivered the goods worth the wait. That's what they said, though. What about you? Was it worth all those years of hype?

It took a long while for them to do it, but Wavit Remote makers ThinkOptic has finally brought Nintendo to court because of the Wii.
Now, patent lawsuits like this aren't anything new for Nintendo, especially after they launched the Wii console, but what's unique to this case is that ThinkOptic has also included manufacturers and retailers, such as Wal-Mart, Nyko Technologies, Imation, GameStop, RadioShack, and JC Penney as defenders.
According to the lawsuit, Nintendo infringed upon U.S. Patent Number 7, 796,116, or the "Electronic equipment for handheld vision based absolute pointing system" patent.
"The rejection of [...] applications - assigned to Nintendo Co. Ltd. - based on the 116 patent is proof that Nintendo defendants knew or should have known of the objective risk that one or more of their products infringed at least one claim of at least the 116 Patent," read the complaint.
Because of this, ThinkOptic is praying for an injunction from the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Texas against any products that vioate the patent, on top of royalties, attorney's fees, and of course, monetary reparation for profits that they allegedly lost.
Nintendo has yet to comment on the matter, but last we heard, a jury trial was also requested. Back in April, a patent for "Wii Light" was uncovered, which was originally applied for in 2009.

Is Rugby Challenge ever coming out? In just a couple of weeks, we welcome September already, which also happens to be the month when the Rugby World Cup will be happening.
Ideally, this should be the best time for the multiplatform sports title to come out, but from the looks of it, it's not happening. In fact, there hasn't been much to see of Rugby Challenge set to come out for the PC, PS Vita, PS3 and Xbox 360, as there's practically absolute radio silence on it.
Practically, but not quite. Developer Tru Blu Games has now opened up on their Facebook page about the real deal.
"We know there is some frustration and speculation on the release date for this title," they started. "We have invested an enormous amount of funds and effort in this title, and if we could have released it yesterday, we would have."
Sebastian Giompaolo further explains in the letter that they already had set the release date and budget, but because of certain drawbacks, they had to reposition themselves so that they may "continue working on the game until [they] are satisfied that the product is of the highest standard."
"Our initial intention was to create a great game featuring the great Jonah Lomu and release upon completion. There was no plan made to release prior to or during the World Cup. We later found out that we had a competitor and the race was on to release before them. We must apologize to our fans as we will not make this deadline, but we can assure you that the wait will not be much longer.
We are still on track to release before the end of Quarter 3, which is no later than the 30th of September. Please be patient. Soon you will have the pleasure of playing the best rugby game ever."

This should finally put an end to the long-running debate of whether video games should be considered art.
The National Endowment for the Arts (NE) had recently declared video games as an eligible art form, having met their new grant application guidelines.
The additional requirement for NEA, which nicely fit in video games in the art category, would be "Arts in Media". This states that:
"All available media platforms such as the Internet, interactive and mobile technologies, digital games, arts content delivered via satellite, as well as on radio and television," are from hereon out to be recgonized as an art form.
On top of this, the NEA also are giving grants reaching up to US$ 200,000 for those works of art, or those that are about to arts, to support the artist.
Overall, this is definitely great news for the industry. Also, it does well for the arts scene to expand their definition of what is art, considering that a whole lot of other forms are coming up in this digital age.
Part of forwarding the culture of art is to be open to the fast-changing technology that allows for other modes of creativity to surface. Most certainly, video games is one such avenue, and it makes little sense to box it up in a league away from the arts simply under the notion that it's only a game.
It takes just as much creativity and dedication to the craft as with any other painting or sculpture or music, so really, it's about time video games be given the recognition it deserves.
As much as I love and respect Roger Ebert for his critiques on films, I am so glad this is one point he's been proven wrong. It escapes my mind how he could have been so narrow-minded regarding video games being considered as art, when films themselves were also ostracized by the arts industry when it was first starting out.
Considering that the history of film and video games are not all that different, in terms of the hurdles they had to go through to be recognized as a credible medium of the arts, he should have at least been more welcoming to the idea that digital games - no matter how childish/ childlike they may appear in form - do have more to offer than mindless entertainment.
This is definitely a huge score for all video games out there. Kudos to NEA for recognizing this shift in media!

Well what do we have here? If it's not a leaked copy of the script for Crystal Dynamic's Tomb Raider reboot!
This is a gold mine, indeed, for all awaiting fans out there, as it gives us a little bit of insight as to the kind of Lara we will be engaging with in this iteration.
As initially suspected, the reboot will definitely be touching on Lara's younger days as an explorer and gun-toting treasure hunter.
The leaked script was apparently for a voice acting audition, and here it focused particularly to her relationship with Conrad Roth. He's a 52-year-old treasure hunter, who will basically serve the role of her mentor, same as how Von Croy was to her back in The Last Revelation.
Here's a bit of that script:
Cinematic – Village2
EXT. VILLAGE – NIGHT
Lara returns to Roth and finds him still lying unconscious next to the campfire.
Lara drops the transmitter and the medkit next to Roth and starts to work
LARA
(Determined) Right, let’s get you patched up.
FADE DOWN briefly and then FADE UP to Roth waking up. He sits up. Lara’s is sitting a small distance away staring into the camp fire.
ROTH
Not bad. Where does a young lady like you learn to do a thing like that?
LARA
Late shift at The Nine Bells. A wolf’s got nothing on a broken bottle.
Roth looks at the transmitter.
ROTH
You got it. Nice work.
LARA
I assume the plan is to get it to that radio tower?
We angle on the central mountain peak.
ROTH (O.C.)
It should give us the best shot of broadcasting a strong signal in every direction.
Roth grunts, shifting his wounded leg uncomfortably, He looks at the peak, then at his leg, then back at Lara.
ROTH
(softly) Lara. We need to send out that SOS and I’m not going climbing any time soon.
Lara stares into the fire.
LARA
(Despondent) I was afraid you were going to say that.
Roth reaches out and touches Lara’s shoulder. She turns to look at him – her face a mask of worry.
ROTH
You can do this Lara; after all, you are a Croft.
LARA
(Weakly) I don’t think I’m that kind of Croft.
ROTH
(Encouraging) Sure you are. You just don’t know it yet.
Roth reaches over and picks up his climbing axe. He lays it on the ground between them. Lara stares at it for a minute unsure if she should take the responsibility.
LARA
(Putting on a brave face) Then let’s hope I’m a fast learner.
When she does reach for it Roth grabs her wrist gently.
ROTH
(softly but sternly) Just be careful Lara.
Roth lifts his hand and Lara nods before standing up to leave.
She slips off into the night without another word.
For the rest of the leaked script, head on over to the source link below.

The PlayStation Network has been hacked! Sure, that may be no news to us in the loop in the gaming industry, but everyone else is just finding out about it now.
That's right, a little under a week since Sony's been hit by the major PSN outage and the rest of the world is just beginning to notice. But boy, they sure did sit up and really paid attention! So much so, in fact, that this news item is actually  making it to the headlines of most major networks.
"Most major networks" would include BBC and CNN, which are both doing coverages via their websites, online radio, and cable news shows. It's so hot, indeed, that it's even taken over what is dubbed as the massively huge Royal Wedding for Prince William and Kate Middleton.
And you know what happens when the big players pick it up -- the rest of them follows. Now the PSN outage is on the frontline of every local news, especially since word got out that PSN accounts have consequently been compromised because of the hack.
As it should, now that it's become a major security threat to all 77 million PSN subscribers the world over. Imagine 77 million credit card details, birthdays, addresses, e-mails and passwords left out there in the vulnerable open. In a world as paranoid as ours, that will definitely make big news.
