Sony wants you to choose which games go on sale. So, do that.
Sony’s PlayStation Network offers a large number of downloadable and independent games, and each of those games naturally costs money. If you visit the PlayStation Store after that time, you can vote for your favorite games out of a number of categories. The company is waiting for “the right” handheld. Hint: Vita isn’t it.
Naughty Dog, the company behind Uncharted, Crash Bandicoot and the upcoming, ridiculously over-hyped The Last of Us, is probably one of the most well-respected developers in the industry at the moment. The Uncharted series has received mountains of praise, and has served as one of the most purchase-motivating PlayStation exclusives since the days of Final Fantasy.
Now that the PlayStation Vita is officially on shelves (well, almost), people want to know who will be making games for the device, and who won’t. As of this week, you can file Naughty Dog under the “won’t” category. Community manager Arne Meyer has confirmed that the company has no Vita titles in the works, and won’t be entering the portable market until “the right handheld” comes along.
Meyer noted that console development is really Naughty Dog’s wheelhouse, playing to their strengths in pushing the limits of both hardware and the company’s game engines. He also stated that he couldn’t rule out a Vita game completely, but that at the moment, there are no plans for Naughty Dog to bring a game to the system.
Uncharted: Golden Abyss is expected to be one of the biggest Vita launch titles at release, but it was developed by Sony Bend borrowing the license from Naughty Dog.
Naughty Dog is one of Sony’s biggest and most successful developers. Seeing them out of the race on the Vita is certainly strange, especially when you consider that Sony just announced that all of its studios were working on something Vita-related.
Do you think more developers will follow Naughty Dog in passing on Vita development?

Square Enix has listened to your feedback. Well, not really.
We talked last week about Square Enix’s plan to consolidate nearly half of the Final Fantasy XIV servers in the hopes of improving the experience of players, but those players were apparently none too happy about the plan. After extensive forum battles and player-to-dev conversations, Square Enix has made a few minor tweaks, but left the major stuff intact.
Server merges will now take place March 27. The company isn’t ruling out new realms at the moment, but is naturally waiting to see what happens after the release of Final Fantasy XIV 2.0 before it makes any big decisions.
You can log into your account as of March 1 to choose what server you’d like to land in. Every server has a population cap, so you’ll want to lock yours down sooner rather than later; otherwise you risk ending up on a random realm assigned by Square Enix.
Here’s the full details:
First Stage: From 0:00 a.m. PST, March 1 (Thursday) to 0:59 a.m. PDT, March 12 (Monday), 2012.
- Players will still be able to change Worlds even after applying for a World transfer.
* Players will not be able to select Worlds that are already populated with the maximum number of characters, but players will be able to move from such Worlds to other Worlds. Note that if a player leaves one World to transfer to another World, and in the interim the first World is filled with the maximum number of characters, the player will no longer be able to transfer back to the original World.
* It is possible that some Worlds will reach the population limit very soon after World transfer applications begin.
Second Stage: From 1:00 a.m. PDT, March 12 (Monday) to 0:59 PDT, March 19 (Monday), 2012.
- Worlds that are populated with the maximum allowable characters will be fixed and locked.
- Locked Worlds cannot be selected as a transfer destination.
- As well, all players in locked Worlds will no longer be able to apply for World transfers.
For this reason, we recommend that players complete their World transfer applications in the First Stage.
What do you think of the plan to merge servers?

Why make new games when people will just keep buying the old ones?
Fans have been on a rampage trying to get Square Enix to remake Final Fantasy VII, but the company doesn’t seem to care. Instead, it has elected to bring the PlayStation 2’s Final Fantasy X to modern consoles, with an HD version due sometime this year. Unfortunately for fans of the franchise, details were scarce at the time of the project’s announcement.
New info has emerged that helps clarify what exactly Final Fantasy X HD is all about. And if you’re hoping for a complete, next-gen remake, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. Shinji Hashimoto, producer for Square Enix, has confirmed that the upcoming re-release is a re-mastering of the original a la ICO or Metal Gear Solid HD.
So it looks like the Final Fantasy X you remember will be present in full in this upcoming release, with a few minor upgrades to make it worth plopping down your cash. Not the best news in the world, but not terrible either.
Is it worth buying the same games over and over again for minor graphical upgrades?

Nintendo 3DS titles score the top three slots for 2011 sales.
Japan’s gaming market is very, very different from the one here in the west. Japanese gamers are big fans of portable titles, and they’re not really that into the AAA FPS blockbusters that seem to do so well in the U.S. and in Europe. With that in mind, the 2011 software sales tallies for Japan don’t really come as much of a surprise.
Mario Kart 7 landed firmly in first place, followed by Super Mario 3D Land. In fact, of the top ten games, five were exclusively available on a Nintendo console. The rest of the list belongs to the PlayStation 3, with not one Xbox 360 title breaking into the top ten.
Here’s the full list, courtesy of Edge:
01. Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo, 3DS)
02. Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo, 3DS)
03. Monster Hunter Tri G (Capcom, 3DS)
04. Final Fantasy Type-0 (Square Enix, PSP)
05. Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Square Enix, PS3)
06. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (Capcom, PSP)
07. Minna No Rhythm Tengoku (Nintendo, Wii)
08. Tales Of Xillia (Namco Bandai, PS3)
09. Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 Professional (DS)
10. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo, Wii)
What’s really amazing about Mario Kart topping the charts for the year is that the game didn’t hit shelves until December 1. That means that every one of the 1.16 million units sold moved in just a rough 30-day period. Not too shabby there, Nintendo. Also interesting is Final Fantasy XIII-2’s presence on the list, despite the fact that the game opened relatively weak and many news outlets lamented it as a failure.
So what do these numbers tell us about the western market? Nothing at all, of course!

Square Enix drops details on FFXIV’s billing structure so players know what to expect as the game shifts off the F2P mechanic.
Final Fantasy XIV has officially reached the end of its forced free beta, and Square Enix seems to think they’ve finally hit a point where people will be willing to pay to play. They announced the shift back to a regular subscription model about a month ago – now they’re ready to move forward with the change.
Here’s what that means for current players: As of January 5th, your FFXIV account will be suspended until you opt back into the billing system. Monthly fees will be set at $9.99 until the release of FFXIV 2.0, the updated version of the MMO, at which point they’ll bump up to $12.99. You’ll also need to pay $3.00 per extra character on your account – the basic subscription covers only one main character.
If you play FFXIV, you may want to check out their official site to get a bearing on what to expect. Then again, it’s pretty basic MMO stuff. You pay money; you get to play the game. The real question is whether players will be willing to shift from F2P back to a subscription model.
Do you think players will pay for FFXIV, or did the game already miss its chance?

For their next big PSP launch, Square-Enix is giving “Final Fantasy” players a solution to the number one problem in power gaming – the human body’s need to sleep.
Leveling in “Final Fantasy” games, even the great ones, has often seemed like a chore. It always feels like there are just enough missions and monsters to go around until you hit a certain point, and from then on out it’s pure grinding. Square-Enix has a bit of news for grind-averse gamers (like myself) – in “Final Fantasy Type-0,” your characters will continue to gain experience points and level up even when you’re not playing the game.
While specifics are slim on how much XP you’ll gain or if there are limitations on the feature, the basic breakdown of the function goes like this: You’ll access “Final Fantasy Type-0’s” Secret Mission feature before powering down your game and presumably select the character to participate. From there, as long as the PSP battery stays charged and you keep the game in your PSP, your characters will continuously gain experience points.
When your character finally levels, you’ll earn a small amount of AP. You can then use this AP to purchase special abilities, such as Ace’s Cannon Laser and Queen’s Energy Bomb. Combat in “Type-0” occurs in real-time but still makes use of the familiar ATB gauge, which developers included so you can control multiple characters during a fight.
“Final Fantasy Type-0” is headed to Japanese markets on October 27, with no official announcement for a North America release. However, if history is any indicator, you may see the game in your area sometime in 2012.
In the meantime, what do  you folks think of automatic, passive leveling? It worked well for “EVE,” but will it function for “Final Fantasy?”

You'll probably be agreeing with what Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada has to say about the Final Fantasy brand.
According to him, everything just went downhill following the Final Fantasy XIV launch last year. He made these feelings public at a press conference held in Japan earlier this morning. Despite his concession, however, he stressed that they will "continue with our reform work, which basically amounts to fully redoing the game, and hope to revive the FFXIV that should have been released."
At the recenty concluded TGS, Square Enix confirmed that they will be coming out with a remake of FFX for the PS Vita and the PS3. They're also pushing forward with their online campaign, confirming that Final Fantasy Type-0 will be available via digital distribution as well.

Square Enix confirmed today that they will be coming out with a downloadable version of Final Fantasy Type-0 for the PSP.
In fact, it will be available online as a download purchase on the same day that the UMD version comes out in Japan, which is on October 27th.
At least you guys now have an option of which format to use for the game. If you're not digging the 2-disc system of the UMD version, which will set you back JPY 7,700, then there's the downloadable version for you. That one's going to come at a cheaper cost, too, at JPY 6, 480. All you have to do is get on the PlayStation Store, and you should be good to go.
The game was previously delayed for a bit, but at least now it's guaranteed to be coming out on their set date. The delay was reportedly a reaction by Square Enix to the fans' reception of the demo that came out previously. Hopefully with the extra time they got on their hands, all the issues will be resolved by the time the game comes out.

The demo for Final Fantasy Type-0 came out just last weekend, but contrary to the excitement that welcomed it, the game is now facing criticisms from fans.
Among the complaints of the fans who did get to check out the demo would be the camera controls, which hasbeen described so far as very frustrating. Responding to said complaints, Hajime Tabata then went on Twitter to post a video explaining what went wrong with the demo.
He also addressed the Phantoma system which was right underneath the camera control issues.
With the game just  a mere couple of months away from release, fans are understandably worried that all these fixes will cause the game to be delayed.
Type-0 is slated to come out on October 13th for the PSP for Japan. It's still uncertain whether or not it will be coming out for North America, but if it does, hopefully these issues won't be coming along with it.

It's a field day today for Final Fantasy: Type-0 fans.

It's a field day today for Final Fantasy: Type-0 fans. Square Enix not only announced the launch date for it, they also released a brand new, five-minute long trailer.

So, first things first. The release date. Japan will be getting it on October 13th,for a price of ¥7,700 (about US$ 97). Pricey, yes. But that could probably be justified by the fact that the game is coming out in two UMD discs. Considering that a regular UMD is priced in Japan at ¥5,040 (about US$ 65), that's still pretty cheap.
Apart from those particulars, Square Enix also confirmed that Type-0's theme song, Zero, will be sung by Bump of Chicken.
Now, on to that brand new video to get you more hyped up than you already are:
