Uncharted Movie: Naughty Dog Approved

With the original plan of abandoning the in-game story abandoned, Uncharted developer Naughty Dog is much happier about how the film is moving along.

When plans were first announced for an Uncharted movie, the attached director was listed as David O. Russell. Russell’s plan put many gamers on edge – he intended to start with a completely new story and avoid the story set up by the games almost entirely. He also failed to cast Nathan Fillion in the role, so as far as I’m concerned that should have a been a major warning sign.

Anyway, Russell’s gone now and Neil Burger, director of The Illusionist had signed on to replace him. Burger says they’re starting the script from scratch and heading back to the actual games for story inspiration. This new direction earned high marks of praise from Naughty Dog, the company that developed the Uncharted series, who at first were very concerned about where the film was headed.

Co-lead designer Richard Lemarchand had this to say when asked about the film by Eurogamer:

"The producers of the movie project have a lot of integrity, and they are keen to make the kind of film fans of Uncharted want to see made.”

There’s no word on whether Burger will be able to make casting changes to the film, as Mark Wahlberg is still signed on to play the lead role of Nathan Drake. Beyond this major failing, it’s good to see a video game film adaptation that’s at least somewhat concerned with staying true to its source material. After all, if a game is a massive success, there’s obviously something there that gamers already like.

They've already found someone to replace David O. Russell for the Uncharted movie adaptation, and needless to say, he's just as excited as everyone else to get on board.

Wahlberg championed by Fillion for Uncharted movie

We all know Natan Fillion had expressed his intent to play his namesake, Nathan Drake, for the upcoming Hollywood movie adaptation of the PS3-blockbuster, Uncharted. A faction of sorts have surfaced among fans, on the Internet, with people being torn between Fillion and Mark Wahlberg being cast for the lead role.

We all know Natan Fillion had expressed his intent to play his namesake, Nathan Drake, for the upcoming Hollywood movie adaptation of the PS3-blockbuster, Uncharted. A faction of sorts have surfaced among fans, on the Internet, with people being torn between Fillion and Mark Wahlberg being cast for the lead role.

Ultimately, of course, it's been confirmed by the film director, David O. Russel, that the actor formerly known as Marky Mark has bagged the nameplate of Nathan Drake. Fillion and his fans may be disappointed (they do say the Castle actor looks very much alike like Nathan Drake), but he's taking it very gentlemanly, even championing Wahlberg for the role he wanted for himself not too long ago.

In the recent episode of the Nerdist Podcast, Fillion drops by and talks about - among that of his Canadian roots, his TV show, and more - the upcoming Uncharted film, and giving praise to Wahlberg in the process.

"You know I would love to have an Indiana Jones forme, that's one of my greatest heroes of all time. You can't fault a man for: A) working with someone he's worked before; B) Mark Wahlberg, I think that's a talented guy. I think he does great work, that guy, and he's a huge international star, which I am not. I am not. I will be," he said.

"So sure, I would have loved it, but I can't fault anybody for any of the choices they make. You're gonna make a movie, make it the way you're gonna make it and have a great time."

Back in December, director Russel was approached by a fan at an event, campaigning for Fillion to be cast as the lead in the Uncharted movie. Unfortunately, Russel apparently had his eyes set on Wahlberg, and so Fillion will just have to wait it out until he gets his chance to star in his own Indiana Jones-inspired flick.
