Remember that time Infinity Ward exploded and everyone was super pissed? Well, the legal aspect of that boondoggle is still happening.
The year was 2009. Activision, riding high on the insanely profitable Modern Warfare 2, was looking for ways to keep the profits rolling in and the games rolling out. Infinity Ward, the company behind the massive hit, was looking for ways in which to keep a larger share of those profits. The end result? A massive controversy that resulted in the ousting of two prominent devs.
Vince Zampella and Jason West, co-founders of Infinity Ward and the creative minds behind the Modern Warfare franchise, were either fired from Activision, or they quit. It depends on who you ask. The actions were apparently the result of serious contractual problems, with Activision claiming the devs were up to no good with other studios, while the devs claim Activision was holding back enormous royalty payments to them and the rest of the IW crew.
The whole thing has been rolled up into a lawsuit, which was scheduled to go before a judge on May 7. However, the case is now set for May 29, thanks to a delay request on the part of Activision. The company isn’t yet talking about why it elected to push the trial back, but we’re keeping an eye out for official statements.
There are several big things at stake in this court case. Number one, the enormous royalty payments Zampella and West claim that Activision owes them. Number two, damages ordered by the court. Oh, and number three: Ownership of the Modern Warfare brand.
If West and Zampella win partial ownership of the franchise, they’ll be able to make their own Modern Warfare games. Seriously. Games that would more than likely be published by EA. Activision is naturally fighting hard, so we’ll just have to wait and see where this whole thing goes.
What do you think happened with Zampella, West and Activision? Where do you think the lawsuit will go?

Leaked screenshots and cryptic Tweets indicate that Sony may be working on its own version of the Nintendo brawler.
Super Smash Bros. originally launched on the Nintendo 64, and was an instant classic. Nintendo fans immediately felt a connection to the familiar characters, and the simple but precise fighting mechanics turned the game into a massive success. The follow-up game, Super Smash Bros. Melee, launched for the GameCube and was probably the best iteration of the franchise, though the Wii’s Brawl is still looked upon in a positive light.
All things considered, the Super Smash Bros. game system is a brilliant moneymaker. Take familiar characters and make them fight. The end. So it’s no surprise that Nintendo’s competitors would want to get in on the action, and recent information indicates that Sony is doing just that.
Here’s what we know:
We know that a game, codenamed Title Fight, is in development at SuperBot Entertainment. We also vaguely know that the game involves several of Sony’s most famous characters, including Uncharted’s Nathan Drake, Twisted Metal’s Sweet Tooth and God of War’s Kratos. Also – Parappa the Rappa.
Various game websites have conducted investigations, turning up screenshots from the game, pictures of arcade joysticks and a tweet from SuperBot’s Chris Molina indicating that the new Sony commercials featuring a collection of familiar characters was “foreshadowing” his studio’s game.
There’s a full interview up at Paul Gale Network that basically lays the entire game out on a platter, so it’s unclear exactly how much of this is “rumor” and how much is “information.” For now, it definitely looks like Sony is cooking up a Super Smash Bros-type game.
Do you think it’s possible for another developer to capitalize on the success of the Smash Bros franchise?

If you’ve been busy with holiday preparations or fighting off dragon invasions, here are some things you may have missed.
It’s been a somewhat busy week for the games industry, though most of the news has to do with titles that have already been released rather than things that are about to come out. We’re fast approaching the end of the crazy rush of releases and people seem to be settling down into their gaming habits.
Modern Warfare, Battlefield and Skyrim dominated the news this week, and plenty of commenters stormed our posts to let their voices heard. So without further ado, here’s your:
Infinity Ward Swings the MW3 Banhammer
Modern Warfare 3 has been out since the 8th, and lead creative strategist Robert Bowling has confirmed that Infinity Ward has already banned over 1,600 players for cheating, hacking and glitching. Most people seem pretty happy about Infinity Ward’s commitment to stopping cheating, but some commenters can’t resist another chance to take pot shots at the Call of Duty franchise.
PS3 Battlefield 3 Owners Getting Battlefield 1943
Sony’s Jack Tretton announced that the PS3 version of Battlefield 3 would come packed with Battlefield 1943, but that bonus failed to materialize. Some gamers filed a class action lawsuit against EA (which I still don’t understand), and faced with intense media pressure and the ire of Battlefield fans everywhere, the developer caved. So, free Battlefield 1943 for everyone!
EB Games Canada Dropping Pre-Owned Games
There is a rumor floating around the retail games industry that EB Games, a subsidiary of GameStop, is planning to mix its used and new games together. The familiar yellow “used” tags will be replaced with white “used” tags, so while the games will still be noted as used products, the similar labels may confuse less savvy gamers. We’re still waiting to see how this story plays out.
Skyrim Map Contains all of Tamriel
One gamer’s realization that the entire landmass of Tamriel is built into the map for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim led us to wonder why exactly the content was included. Some venture it’s intended as a resource for modders, some think it’s just to add realism to the environment, and some think it’s for potential DLC content down the road. What do you think?
Square Enix: We Want a Final Fantasy Every Year
Square Enix was apparently unhappy with the development time of Final Fantasy XIII and is hoping to up their release schedule to something more along the lines of Assassin’s Creed or Call of Duty. There seem to be people on both sides of this particular post, some excited about more frequent Final Fantasy games, others concerned about the quality loss that may occur as the result of such a cramped development schedule.
So there are your most commented posts of the week. And, as is now tradition, it’s time to award one lucky reader the prestigious “Comment of the Week” award. This week’s award goes to Harv_ironlung, for his very thoughtful and poignant response to Keith Vaz: Ban Call of Duty:

Fan-developed My Little Ponies fighting game straddles the line between very cute and very, very unsettling.
My Little Ponies is generally considered one of the most overly cute franchises on earth. The entire point of the toys was to overwhelm children with their cuteness, who would in turn overwhelm their parents with demands that the toys be taken home. Essentially, the product sold based on cuteness alone. Now indie developer Mane6 is taking the Ponies crew somewhere they’ve never been – brutal fights to the death.
MLP: Fighting is Magic actually looks pretty smooth, and though it is a fighting title it doesn’t come off as overly violent. I would wager it’s about as cute as two ponies fighting could be, and it’s only in alpha right now. Who knows how much cuteness Mane6 can pack into the title before its release to the public and subsequent shutdown for copyright infringement?
The video clip also doesn’t indicate whether we can expect to see pony-theme finishing moves, such as knocking someone out with a rainbow or hugging someone until they fall gently asleep. I doubt there will be any gory violence, as the game seems dedicated to keeping things as cuddly as possible. In fact, it’s nice to see an indie developer that isn’t making a play to the Mortal Kombat crowd by turning this generally friendly franchise into an overly stylized bloodbath.
So far, MLP: Fighting is Magic has been confirmed as having both online and single-player modes. Mane6 is playing the rest of the details fairly close to the chest.
If you want to participate in the making of the game, Mane6 is currently looking for voice actors. You can check out the details right here.
Are you interested in a My Little Pony fighter, or are you too cool for a little cute?

Are you getting tired of the same old IPs being rehashed by Capcom? Would you like to see something new and different from them for a change? Worry not, because the company's VP has said that they are considering giving some of their old IPs a break.
Said Christian Svensson, "We really still think there's value in trying some stuff with [older IPs]. Obviously, we're heavily reliant right now on a narrower range of core brands. We're looking at ways to not over-saturate the market with them."
He continues to explain that the last thing they'd want to happen is for fans to get bored of their brands if they continue to expose them as much as they have been doing.
"I think that care has to be taken to avoid brand fatigue. Not to name names, I think some people are better or worse at that. We have some concerns internally about it, are we doing too much of something?"
Capcom is known for a long list of franchises that they have practically squeezed out dry with every new installement, such Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and Mega Man among many more others.
"You may see some other stuff, which we've been quite prolific with, take a little rest for a while whilst we update some stuff that hasn't been looked at for a while."
So really, they're just going to redirect their efforts to other already existing franchises that they feel have not been getting as much attention as of late. If that's the case, then maybe asking for a brand-new IP may not necessarily be at the top of their priority.

Many are wondering what's up for Killzone 3, specially after that spectacular launch it had just last week. Gamers are just in the early stage of enjoying the game, but already, they can't help but ask for more. They want it so bad, that game copies are flying out of the retail shelves, too. And it's only been a week since it came out.

Many are wondering what's up for Killzone 3, specially after that spectacular launch it had just last week. Gamers are just in the early stage of enjoying the game, but already, they can't help but ask for more.
At the Community Forums for PlayStation US, Guerrilla Games producer Seb Downie took the time out to answer the fans and their questions regarding the future that they hold for Killzone 3. One of the more popular queries they had was whether or not there will be more Operations DLC.
Asked user rirruto8, "will there be a DLC for more Operations maps?" Operations is the new game type available in the Multiplayer mode of Killzone 3. What makes Operations particularly exciting is that there are a variety of strategic objectives they have to accomplish by fighting with each other, under time constraints. The tricky part about all of this, though, is that the objectives randomly change throughout your progress, making it a bit more of a challenge. Once the objectives are completed, players are then rewarded with bonuses,on top of the points they have already earned for kills.
So far, it has enjoyed immense popularity from among the gamers, to the extent that they are campaigning for more maps to be added to it. Currently, there are only three maps in existence, and as the fans put it, it's definitely "not cutting it".
When this issue was raised in the Q&A with Seb Downie, however, a disappointing reply rang out: "Unlikely." That was a swift kill, too, might I add, as he did not even give any explanation as to why Guerrilla Games are not even opening themselves up to the consideration of bringing in more Operations maps via DLC. They must have their reasons, but it sure would be nice to hear about them too.
Anyway, since they're not very forthcoming yet about this matter, let's just move on to a better bit of news, still about everyone's well-loved FPS title.
Thanks to all your fantastic support that you exhibited upon the game's launch week, Killzone 3 not only bested Bulletstorm for the top spot in the UK charts, it's also now moved 500,000 units worldwide. And that's just for its first week out in the market.
According to Sony's statistics, half of these sales numbers were from the Americas, while the rest were from EMEAA. Of these 500,000 units, about 10% were of the bundles type. Based on this data, it looks like Killzone 3 is a PS3-mover after all.
It's no wonder if they'll be able through the one million mark even before the end of its first month. At the rate copies are flying off the shelves, they should be able to meet this feat in little time. What's more, we wouldn't be all too surprised if it beats Killzone 2's record in under a year. The second title of the franchise was released in 2009, and has since sold some 2.58 million units worldwide.
In the meantime, you might want to top off this Killzone 3 news bonanza with this new uncensored multiplayer video from the game, involving some gameplay with the PlayStation Move. It features footage from the crater of craters, so just click on Play and do enjoy.

Why, oh why, are you being so cruel, Australia? The shocking news we received today that is sure to rattle gaming fans in the land down under is that Mortal Kombat has just been banned.
Why, oh why, are you being so cruel, Australia? The shocking news we received today that is sure to rattle gaming fans in the land down under is that Mortal Kombat has just been banned.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Australia confirmed the report to GamePron, disclosing that the Australian Board had a particularly strong aversion to the game's many fatalities. As it is a fighting game, where the objective is to knock down your opponent, this reasoning leaves a lot dumbfounded.
Said WBEI in their official statement, "We are extremely disappointed that Mortal Kombat, one of the world's oldest and most successful video game franchises, will not be available to mature Australian gamers."
"WBIE would not market mature content where it is not appropriate for the audience. We understand that not all content is for every audience, but there is an audience for mature gaming content and it would make more sense to have the R18+ classificaion in Australia."
The Australian Board justifies this ban thus: "The Board notes that fatalities cannot be performed in Story mode and are unlikely to be performed frequently during gameplay; however, it is also noted that there are more than 60 fatalities available and they are an important component of the game."
Among the many moves they found disturbing in particular would be Kung Lao's "buzz saw" hat move, Stryker's point-blank firing range, leg-ripping from Quan Chi, slice and dice from Scorpion, and Shao Kahn's body-tear maneouver.
The Ratings Board further explained, "The game includes over 60 fatalities which contain explicit depictions of dismemberment, decapitation, disembowelment and other brutal forms of slaughter. Despite the exaggerated conceptual nature of the fatalities and their context within a fighting game set in a fantasy realm, impact is heightened by the use of graphics which are realistically rendered and very detailed."
It would be safe to say, then, that the developers really got it right in so far as the graphics are concerned! But that would be missing the Classification Board's point entirely.
For their part, it seems like WBIE have no intentions of cutting out content just so they can appease the board. "As a member of the iGEA, WBIE is reviewing all options available at this time," they said. iGEA would be the games industry association for the PAL region.
Mortal Kombat is the first game to have been banned from Australian shores in more than a year. Here's hoping they work this issue out. It would be a crying shame if mature gamers from the territory won't be able to get their hands on this after waiting for so long.
The Australian Classification Board's full decision can be viewed right here in this link, in pdf format. Have a look at it yourself so you are well-informed enough when you make your rebuttal to their case.
We'll be following up on this matter, and of course, we'll all be keeping you posted on any more developments regarding this. In the meantime, our thoughts go out to our Australian counterparts. Just keep crossing your fingers. There might be a miracle somewhere, somehow.

dissidia-duodecim-thumb-2In late 2008, Square Enix put a new spin into the Final Fantasy franchise with Dissidia: Final Fantasy. Later this year, the company will be releasing a sequel called Dissidia Duodecim: Final Fantasy. If you really loved the direction Square Enix took with Dissidia, then make sure you get Duodecim. There won't be a next one.
