Chris Avellone: "Player Convenience" hurts RPG's
And enjoying having a player fanbase hurts game companies
Chris Avellone recently spoke with Industry Gamers about the current state of video games and where they are headed in terms of genre and gameplay. Avellone is a veteran, having worked on Planetscape:Torment, Fallout 2 and of course, Fallout New Vegas, Avellone knows how people play and yet seems that desiging for certain types of players can be frustrating.
Speaking with Industry Gamers he said that "the 'advances' have been more for player convenience - sometimes good, sometimes bad - in my opinion. Journals, quest compasses that point directly to the goal and show you the route, auto-maps, etc. are helpful; at the same time, I think it undermines the thrill of victory and discovery and a lot of what makes an RPG an RPG"
I've heard of the argument that over the past decade game designers have gotten soft on players and provide them with too much when it comes to games. I think Avellone is making a stance more on just the RPG genre itself rather than calling out flawed game design. Avellone was a lot more double-edged about the situation saying that in terms of non-interface elements he felt "the idea of morally grey choices and more focus on actions and consequences" have been great "for all RPG's."
In the past five years, RPG's have gotten a bit more sophisticated from the old Final Fantasy route of world ending, go help out. Avellone's own Planetscape Torment began to break the mould by introducing more of a grey system of good verus evil, rather than just fighting a big bad. There was another addition to Avellone enjoying new-gen RPG's with voice acting has really helped the RPG along well.
Avellone also talked about how the RPG genre is something that should really be added to gameplay more than just tacked on, for game's that do genre-bending. "Developers are seeing the worth in customization, levelling, dialogue, choice and reactivity and other elements that would normally be considered RPG mechanics and introducing them into multiple titles." Hopefully, Avellone will be working on the South Park game and making it worth it's weight in RPG gold.

If you’ve been busy with holiday preparations or fighting off dragon invasions, here are some things you may have missed.
It’s been a somewhat busy week for the games industry, though most of the news has to do with titles that have already been released rather than things that are about to come out. We’re fast approaching the end of the crazy rush of releases and people seem to be settling down into their gaming habits.
Modern Warfare, Battlefield and Skyrim dominated the news this week, and plenty of commenters stormed our posts to let their voices heard. So without further ado, here’s your:
Infinity Ward Swings the MW3 Banhammer
Modern Warfare 3 has been out since the 8th, and lead creative strategist Robert Bowling has confirmed that Infinity Ward has already banned over 1,600 players for cheating, hacking and glitching. Most people seem pretty happy about Infinity Ward’s commitment to stopping cheating, but some commenters can’t resist another chance to take pot shots at the Call of Duty franchise.
PS3 Battlefield 3 Owners Getting Battlefield 1943
Sony’s Jack Tretton announced that the PS3 version of Battlefield 3 would come packed with Battlefield 1943, but that bonus failed to materialize. Some gamers filed a class action lawsuit against EA (which I still don’t understand), and faced with intense media pressure and the ire of Battlefield fans everywhere, the developer caved. So, free Battlefield 1943 for everyone!
EB Games Canada Dropping Pre-Owned Games
There is a rumor floating around the retail games industry that EB Games, a subsidiary of GameStop, is planning to mix its used and new games together. The familiar yellow “used” tags will be replaced with white “used” tags, so while the games will still be noted as used products, the similar labels may confuse less savvy gamers. We’re still waiting to see how this story plays out.
Skyrim Map Contains all of Tamriel
One gamer’s realization that the entire landmass of Tamriel is built into the map for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim led us to wonder why exactly the content was included. Some venture it’s intended as a resource for modders, some think it’s just to add realism to the environment, and some think it’s for potential DLC content down the road. What do you think?
Square Enix: We Want a Final Fantasy Every Year
Square Enix was apparently unhappy with the development time of Final Fantasy XIII and is hoping to up their release schedule to something more along the lines of Assassin’s Creed or Call of Duty. There seem to be people on both sides of this particular post, some excited about more frequent Final Fantasy games, others concerned about the quality loss that may occur as the result of such a cramped development schedule.
So there are your most commented posts of the week. And, as is now tradition, it’s time to award one lucky reader the prestigious “Comment of the Week” award. This week’s award goes to Harv_ironlung, for his very thoughtful and poignant response to Keith Vaz: Ban Call of Duty:

Well said, Harv_ironlung. I don’t think I could have said it any better myself.

mk-thumb-2Mortal Kombat fans in Australia were dealt a lethal blow last week when word came out that the series' latest iteration, Mortal Kombat, was refused classification by the Australian Classification Board. The good news for Australian gamers is that the game's publisher, Warner Bros., isn't taking it lying down. They're rallying for another go at the classification board.

Why, oh why, are you being so cruel, Australia? The shocking news we received today that is sure to rattle gaming fans in the land down under is that Mortal Kombat has just been banned.
Why, oh why, are you being so cruel, Australia? The shocking news we received today that is sure to rattle gaming fans in the land down under is that Mortal Kombat has just been banned.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Australia confirmed the report to GamePron, disclosing that the Australian Board had a particularly strong aversion to the game's many fatalities. As it is a fighting game, where the objective is to knock down your opponent, this reasoning leaves a lot dumbfounded.
Said WBEI in their official statement, "We are extremely disappointed that Mortal Kombat, one of the world's oldest and most successful video game franchises, will not be available to mature Australian gamers."
"WBIE would not market mature content where it is not appropriate for the audience. We understand that not all content is for every audience, but there is an audience for mature gaming content and it would make more sense to have the R18+ classificaion in Australia."
The Australian Board justifies this ban thus: "The Board notes that fatalities cannot be performed in Story mode and are unlikely to be performed frequently during gameplay; however, it is also noted that there are more than 60 fatalities available and they are an important component of the game."
Among the many moves they found disturbing in particular would be Kung Lao's "buzz saw" hat move, Stryker's point-blank firing range, leg-ripping from Quan Chi, slice and dice from Scorpion, and Shao Kahn's body-tear maneouver.
The Ratings Board further explained, "The game includes over 60 fatalities which contain explicit depictions of dismemberment, decapitation, disembowelment and other brutal forms of slaughter. Despite the exaggerated conceptual nature of the fatalities and their context within a fighting game set in a fantasy realm, impact is heightened by the use of graphics which are realistically rendered and very detailed."
It would be safe to say, then, that the developers really got it right in so far as the graphics are concerned! But that would be missing the Classification Board's point entirely.
For their part, it seems like WBIE have no intentions of cutting out content just so they can appease the board. "As a member of the iGEA, WBIE is reviewing all options available at this time," they said. iGEA would be the games industry association for the PAL region.
Mortal Kombat is the first game to have been banned from Australian shores in more than a year. Here's hoping they work this issue out. It would be a crying shame if mature gamers from the territory won't be able to get their hands on this after waiting for so long.
The Australian Classification Board's full decision can be viewed right here in this link, in pdf format. Have a look at it yourself so you are well-informed enough when you make your rebuttal to their case.
We'll be following up on this matter, and of course, we'll all be keeping you posted on any more developments regarding this. In the meantime, our thoughts go out to our Australian counterparts. Just keep crossing your fingers. There might be a miracle somewhere, somehow.

ffxi-thumbDrop rates can be a very annoying game mechanic, especially when they start going down to single-digits. What makes them even more frustrrating is when the enemy you're killing has the item you want displayed prominently while you're fighting yet you don't get the drop even after hundreds of tries. This is what's happening with the Ironclad Triturators in Final Fantasy XI, but apparently that's going to change soon.
