The UK software sales charts hint that Vita’s launch may have gone quite well.
Vita has only been out for a few days, so we sadly don’t have any official numbers in regard to how many devices have sold worldwide. Since we likely wont’ have that info for a week or so, we’ll have to look to other sources to figure out how Vita is doing. Sources like the UK’s weekly sales tally.
According to Edge, Uncharted: Golden Abyss was the best-selling game of the week in the UK. The title beat out FIFA Football, UFC Undisputed 3 and FIFA 12, indicating strong demand for the Vita handheld. If you need a bit more evidence, Rayman Origins also broke the top ten, landing in fifth place for the week (though its sales figures represent sales on all platforms). WipEout 2048 landed at 11, missing the top ten but still performing well.
If you’re keeping score, that’s one launch title in first place, one launch title getting a big boost thanks to the Vita version moving units, and one launch title sitting just outside of the top ten. These numbers certainly hint that Vita’s western launch is off to a strong start.
We’ll have to wait until Sony releases official sales figures to get an idea of exactly how well the Vita is doing, but for now, it’s safe to say that the launch has gone relatively well.
Did you pick up a Vita last week?

Despite Microsoft’s insistence on the contrary, the recent spate of hacker attacks may have something to do with their official website.
We’ve seen this Xbox Live hacking story play out over the last few weeks, and we’ve seen the same arguments thrown up: Hacked users insist they didn’t do anything wrong, and Microsoft insists that Xbox Live is completely secure. Commenters then either bash hacked players for falling victim to phishing attempts, or cast aspersions on Microsoft for covering up a potential security threat.
As of today, we’re starting to see a few more details as to what may actually be causing the problem. Jason Coutee is a network infrastructure manager who also happened to have his Xbox Live account stolen and looted for 8,000 MS Points. Coutee conducted his own investigation (as is becoming the norm) and found a gaping hole in the security measures found on Xbox.com.
Apparently, Xbox.com allows for an infinite amount of incorrect login attempts. No matter how many times you get a password wrong, you can continue trying as long as you’re willing to enter a Captcha code. This means hackers have the option of brute-forcing account passwords, since there’s no consequence for a series of incorrect entries.
There’s naturally no word from Microsoft regarding the issue, and it’s unclear if this is the primary cause of the recent account hacks. However, it’s still a considerable security concern for a website that contains sensitive personal data and credit card information.
We’ll keep you updated as the story develops – we’re expecting some sort of response from Microsoft soon.
Do you think endless password attempts represent a security threat?

A leaked GameStop document hints that North America’s Vita launch may be accompanied by more games than previously thought.
We talked a couple of weeks ago about Vita’s confirmed launch titles, but it looks like a few games managed to slip through the radar. A leaked internal document from games retailer GameStop indicates that there are more titles hitting shelves than we were led to believe, chief among them Gravity Rush and Lumines.
Destructoid acquired an update launch list thanks to one of their clever readers, who likely scored the document from a friend or works at GameStop himself. Take a look at the list and see what you like:
Launch Day
Lumines Electronic Symphony --$39.99
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 --$39.99
Uncharted: Golden Abyss --$49.99
Hot Shots Golf World Invitational --$29.99
Wipeout 2048 --$29.99
Little Deviants --$29.99
Reality Fighters --$29.99
ModNation Racers --$29.99
BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extended --$39.99
Virtua Tennis 4 World Tour --$39.99
Gravity Rush --$39.99
Post-Launch
Supremacy MMA(Feb 16) 2/16
FIFA Soccer (Feb 21)
Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen (Feb 21)
Touch My Katamari (Feb 21)
Ridge Racer (Feb 21)
F1 2011 (Feb 22)
MLB 12: The Show (March 6)
Disgaea 3: Absense of Detention (March 20)
Army Corps of Hell (March-ish)
Little Big Planet (March 31)
Ruin (April)
Resistance: Burning Skies (May)
Are you planning on picking up a Vita at launch, or are the problems surrounding the device enough to make you wait until a potential price drop?

Want to know what games are hitting shelves with the Vita when it drops here in the U.S.? Check out our list!
Today has been an interesting day for Vita news. First, we got an idea of how expensive the device’s memory cards were actually going to be (read: not very). Now, we have a confirmed and official list of every game that will be available at launch. And the list is pretty long, especially when compared to some other launches.
Some of the games are likely not going to be great, but the presence of Uncharted and Hot Shots Golf are enough to ensure Sony sells at least a few thousand devices. And hey, who doesn’t love Katamari?
Here’s your launch list:
SCEA Launch Day Titles
Escape Plan (PSN Only)
Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational
Hustle Kings (PSN Only)
Little Deviants
ModNation Racers: Road Trip
Super StarDust Delta (PSN only)
UNCHARTED: Golden Abyss

A large title update for the popular football/soccer series causes a wave of problems for Xbox 360 and PS3 owners.
FIFA 12 is a game about playing soccer and or football. I live in the United States, so I’m not really sure what that actually includes, but I do know it means running and kicking. Regardless of my inability to understand the sport on which it’s based, the FIFA series is a solid franchise with a strong history of big sales. If you like football/soccer, FIFA is the game for you. It’s the Madden of soccer.
Or at least, it was until EA patched it and turned it into a crashy mess.
Since the recent title update, pushed live on November 10th, some users have reported that FIFA 12 randomly crashes or freezes during PS3 or Xbox 360 play. EA says that the problem is caused by “mismatched data in Creation Centre” content, so if you’re experiencing problems with your copy of the game, here’s what you need to do:
PS3
Power up FIFA, load the “My FIFA” menu, select “FIFA12” profile and select “SAVE/LOAD/DELETE.” Press the cross button, select “Delete,” and choose the UGC file. Delete it and reboot.
Xbox 360
Do the same thing as above, except press “A” instead of cross. Easy peasy.
Have you had any issues with FIFA 12 since the patch? This week seems to be the week of technical difficulties.

Despite a hugely successful launch, the game can’t top Black Ops or Modern Warfare 2 for weekly online play. At least, not this week.
Battlefield 3 sold over five million copies in its first week of launch. That’s a pretty successful release from the perspective of EA and DICE, but certainly not anything for Activision to lose sleep over. Now we have a bit more evidence that BF3 may not be quite the CoD killer EA hoped, in the form of the last week’s Xbox Live stats.
Battlefield 3 landed squarely in third place, behind 2010’s Call of Duty: Black Ops and 2009’s Modern Warfare 2. While it’s a bit unfair to compare the numbers for the release week, considering that Battlefield 3 launched on Tuesday and counting starts on Monday, it’s still stark reminder that as far as the imagined battle of the titan goes, Call of Duty is still the king of the roost.
Heres’ the top ten:
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Modern Warfare 2
Battlefield 3
Gears of War 3
FIFA 12
Halo: Reach
Batman: Arkham City
Madden NFL 12
Forza Motorsport 4
GTA IV
Naturally, these numbers are about to take a big hit with Modern Warfare 3 launching on the 8th, so it’s unclear what exactly will happen. My guess is that we’ll see MW3 take the top slot and BF3 take number two, with the other two titles falling considerably as more players pick up either of the new releases.
As for who is going to win the war between juggernauts? Who cares? Just get the game you like and play it. After all, this “competition” is really nothing more than a sharp marketing effort to send droves of people to either of the games – Activision and EA are very much in this together.
So, which of the top ten titles did you spend your time on this week?

EA Sports talks about one of its biggest franchises and the possibility of it showing up on Sony’s cutting-edge new handheld device.
SSX: Deadly Descents is heading to your PS3 and Xbox 360 in February of 2012. As far as we know, that’s the end of the SSX franchise for the time being, as EA hasn’t made any sort of official announcement regarding a possible follow-up. However, in an interview with CVG, EA Sports lead designer Tom Batty did have some interesting things to say about the future of the series.
Most notably, they’re considering bringing the franchise to the PlayStation Vita handheld system. The Vita, which hits shelves sometime next year, would mark the first appearance of SSX on a portable system. Basically, Batty said that they’re waiting to see how the console version of the game plays out before they make any big decisions, but if things go well for Deadly Descents, a Vita SSX title would be considered “for sure.”
EA Sports is already no stranger to Vita development, planning to bring FIFA 12 directly to the system soon after it launches. While it’s smart of the studio to wait and see how the latest SSX game performs, it also seems like the Vita would be a unique opportunity – there aren’t likely to be a large number of must-have titles at launch, so SSX could potentially experience a boost if it’s launched during a relative lull.
Would you want to see SSX on your Vita, or do you think it’s best left to consoles?

Find out what games real gamers selected as the best of the year, from a contest that earned over two million votes.
GamesMaster’s Golden Joystick Awards are different from other award given out in the games industry, because the people who select the winners are the people that play the games. The Golden Joysticks compile their list of winners based exclusively on votes from players, which means there are not usually any big surprises when the winners list comes out.
One could note that since the votes really only represent the popular gaming mind, excellent but less-known games don’t have much of a chance of winning. Either way, the awards do help us get a pretty good idea of what gamers liked in the last few months, and what they’re still playing. You’ll notice a big wins for Mojang (Minecraft), Ubisoft (Assassin’s Creed) and Rovio (Angry Birds), but the year clearly belongs to Activision/Blizzard (StarCraft, World of Warcraft, Black Ops and Guitar Hero). It probably doesn’t hurt that most of the titles on the list seem to be available for more than one system.
Here’s the list, compiled by GamePro:
Action/Adventure Game of the Year: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Mobile Game of the Year: Angry Birds Rio
Roleplaying Game of the Year: Fallout: New Vegas
Massively Multiplayer Online Game of the Year: World of Warcraft
Fighting Game of the Year: Mortal Kombat
Racing Game of the Year: Gran Turismo 5
Sports Game of the Year: FIFA 11
Strategy Game of the Year: StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
Music Game of the Year: Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock
Free to Play Game of the Year: League of Legends
Downloadable Game of the Year: Minecraft
Shooter Game of the Year: Call of Duty: Black Ops
One to Watch Award: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Innovation of the Year: Nintendo 3DS
Outstanding Contribution: Sonic the Hedgehog
Ultimate Game of the Year: Portal 2
I’m pretty surprised to see the 3DS on the list, since it gets a lot of flak from players and the press, but I guess there weren’t’ many other innovations to speak of.
Remember that winners are taken exclusively from games that game out within the last 12 months, so don’t throw a hissy fit if your favorite game isn’t there unless you’re sure it’s eligible.
That being said, do you see anything in this list worth throwing a hissy fit over?
