Social Game Head: "Vita will die a premature death"

Bossa Studio Head Henrique Olifiers claims there will not be a future for Vita in 2012

Henrique Olifiers and Bossa Studios have been known in the past to make slightly "too honest" claims about the future of gaming. Back in June of this year Bossa called out social games, saying they were 'the lowest common denominator" and that they lose "their creative identity" in the game design process...which is actually quite true, but his recent comments on the Vita may be a bit too honest for some Sony fans liking.

In an interview with Videogamer.com, Olifiers commented on many different things in the gaming industry, such as the unifying nature Valve may bring one day: "Valve is bang on: proprietary stuff is madness, we should be moving to more open platforms, to interoperability, bringing everyone together,"

And this is where the comment about Vita slowly came into play: "...If this is not the motto for the big console manufacturers, not only will we not be there - they're likely to die a horrible premature death, the kind of which I think the Vita will suffer from."

Olifiers said that the dedicated console market's straight up detraction from the idea of cross-platform compatibility is holding the medium back. Olifiers claims that without the help of more companies to make sure more people are gaming, that the medium may be doomed to be a "walled garden." Olifier hates the fact you can't play cross-platform and wants to live in a world "where people are freely connected," which I think is incredibly positive in the realm of gaming, especially handhelds. However, Olifiers was not totally dismissive of the platform.

When asked if his social gaming studio, Bossa studios, would be making games for the PS Vita, Olifiers said: "We'll keep on the lookout to see what the next gen will bring, but if they want more focus on tech specs rather than usability and accessibility, I don't think it will be for us." Bossa actually has the recently ex-Sony developer Yoshifusa Hayama, who was once apart of Team Ico.

Whilst I think Henrique may be just stirring the pot, there have been a few problematic things for the Vita, even before the release. The recent news of the Japanese demand being a bit too much for Sony could cause a lot of poorly and quickly made Vita's and the fact that Canada won't have 3G support for some time is another problem, but I guess we'll see when the Vita comes out next year in the Western World.

If you haven't played a Scribblenauts game, go out and get it right now. It's beautifully handled, fun, creative available on your iPhoen or DS and it's fanatastic...but...you know, maybe don't pay the full price. The game's creative director, Jeremiah Slaczka has come forward saying that the rising prices for a video game budget are making the usual $60 price tag for US Games, untenable for most developers.

Slaczka said in an interview with Game Informer that the recent console generation, dev costs are low enough to allow games that don't sell too well to make money, but now with more being spent on graphics and design, games have to sell into the millions to make sure they get back everything they paid for. Slaczka calls it insane saying that if you aren't going to make a "mega hit at $60" you may as well give up before you start, because it's a lot of money just being wasted.

Slaczka...is a really hard name to type repeatedly and leaves for a stale story so let's just refer to him as Slazzie. Slazzie says that if a game doesn't sell for $60, that at a reduced price, it shouldn't be sold at all, with the current business model. Slazzie used Homefront as an example in the interview claiming that THQ said that the game didn't meet the sales projections not because it was terrible but because the competition at the full price was too fierce.

"As a consumer, why would I want to play an okay FPS when I can play a bunch of great FPS titles for the same price? And that's what the consumers did," Slazzie said, but also noted that with the shortness of the game and people still renting titles, "what if Homefront was only $30 dollars upfront for the single player and if you liked it you could buy the multiplayer for an additional $30?"

Whilst I honestly think this is ridiculous considering that in my country you pay $100 for a game at retail price, if you're lucky and even then I know with Slazzie's business model that we'd be charged $50 for the single player for CoD then another $50 for their multiplayer, oh and another $64.95 for CoD Elite. Slazzie may be right for US prices, but the ripple effect would be devestating overseas...for those of us who still purchase games.

Angry Birds Studio Expands to China

The developer of the runaway mobile gaming hit has chosen Shanghai as the location for its first international expansion, and the decision was no accident.

If you follow the statistics in the iTunes store or the general mobile games marketplace, it’s pretty obvious that one game is still dominating the rest – Angry Birds. The simple, quick and fun gameplay (so familiar to those of us that played games before we owned phones) caught on something fierce, and has turned Rovio into one of the most powerful forces in mobile gaming.

Now Rovio is looking to expand its opportunities in one of the most rapidly growing sectors in the world – China. The Angry Birds game is already a success in China, with 40 million downloads and counting, but Rovio hopes to capitalize on other opportunities offered by the nation.

Peter Vesterbacka, Chief Marketing Officer for Rovio, had this to say on the potential of the Chinese market:

"Rovio chose Shanghai as the first location for an international office because of its uniqueposition as one of the most creative and technologically advanced cities in the world, and also because Rovio wants to show its appreciation to Chinese fans by serving them even better locally.”

One market Rovio is especially hoping to penetrate is that of the “feature” phone, which is industry speak for any phone that doesn’t run off an advanced OS like Android or Apple’s iOS. According to China Daily, which broke the story, there are over a billion mobile phone users in China and almost all of those users still possess a basic feature phone.

This is a largely untapped market, and jumping in early will give Rovio the ability to line itself up as one of China’s premiere game developers. They’re already talking about acquiring smaller studios, so perhaps we’re witnessing the birth of a titan.

A barrage of Mass Effect 3 details have been released to the public, thanks to BioWare's update on their official forums, as well as on Twitter.

First off, though, is the teaser logo for the game, which looks nothing but fierce. Check it out:

Among the information sent out by Brenon Holmes on the messageboards were the following:

# of mods per gun is still in flux. Not all guns can support all types of mods.

Enemies may or may not drop weapons… that’s something we’re still playing around with. They *can* we’re still trying to figure out if the gameplay is fun or not.

Not sure what NG+ is going to look like just yet… someone else might know the plan

Cerberus faction is not what is listed. You’ve seen (Trooper, Centurion and Phantom. You’ll probably see the Guardian and Atlas at E3).

The engineer class heavy melee is a flame attack. It kills the **** out of stuff, really fun to use… it’s not called “Lighting Up” though… not sure where that came from.

Laser weapons are around… but we may not ship with them. They’re expensive, performance wise.

The reaper Krogan (Brute) has armor plating on his chest/belly area you can shoot off. The reaper Asari (Banshee) has a bit of a potbelly.

The upgrade slots you have listed for guns is an overlap with your earlier comment on mods.

I have’t heard anything about headgear that modifies your scope zoom… that’s possible, but I don’t think that’s currently planned.

We call BlindFire, Partial Leans (shepard and enemies just lean out less when performing the action)… since it isn’t a true blind fire (like in other shooters)

Cover is still on A (for now)

You’ll see the omni-blade at E3. I’m not sure if that’s what we’re going to be calling it.

Last month, BioWare released the franchise's comic, Mass Effect Genesis, on the XBL Marketplace. They're also gearing up for their E3 presentation on Monday, at 12:30PM.
