Sony’s savior is nothing more than PSP: the sequel.
Warning: This article contains – gasp! – my opinion. If your delicate sensibilities can’t grasp reading something counter to your own beliefs, perhaps you should mosey along to something you’ll find easier to digest. Here’s a suggestion.
Read the comments on this site, and you’ll see that I’m a bona fide Sony hater. Curiously enough, I’m also an Xbox, Android and Nintendo hater, depending on the comments you read. Basically, if you ask the readers of this site, I hate everything.
Reader contention aside, it is true that I’ve never been a fan of the Sony brand. This is the result of several factors: the “quantity over quality” approach they’ve always taken towards game development, their absurd comments about the superiority of their consoles despite sales data saying otherwise, and their documented tendency to screw their playerbase.
I believe the Sony Vita will fail. Not on the scale of the Virtual Boy or Jaguar, but in the sense that it will not overtake the Nintendo 3DS, and will not extend Sony’s grasp on the handheld market far beyond what the PSP already provided. This belief comes not from my admitted distaste for Sony, but from the tepid response the device has seen since Japanese launch, the lukewarm reviews offered to the system’s launch lineup, and the unfolding clusterfucks related to the new system that indicate Sony hasn’t learned how to make a system that’s easy to use and fun to own.
Put simply, the PS Vita is too little, too late. And no matter how you feel about Sony, it’s not going to change this simple fact: Nintendo remains the king of the handheld kingdom for the foreseeable future.
Sorry Sony fanboys; it looks like you’re out of luck.

If THQ can’t turn its stock around, it may find itself bounced from the stock exchange.
THQ is in some serious trouble. The company is hemorrhaging employees and concerns over its financial viability have ballooned from whispered rumors to fully reported shouts. By all accounts, THQ needs to make some big changes if it’s going to continue to make games in the future.
Today’s news brings no hope to shareholders or employees. NASDAQ has given the company until July 23 to find a way to bump its shares up to more than one dollar each. If the company fails to raise its stock price, it will be de-listed from the NASDAQ marketplace. The current price for one share of THQ stock is a mere 70 cents. De-listing isn’t necessarily the end of the road for THQ, but would have an enormous negative impact on the company’s bottom line.
The threat of de-listing could start a downward spiral for THQ stocks, as investors move to salvage what they can before the stocks end up on the OTCBB. Then again, it could be just the shot in the arm THQ’s board of directors needs to make some major changes near the top of the chain – at this point, that’s the only way to renew investor confidence. We’ll just have to see what the company has up its sleeve.
Would you be bummed to see THQ shutting its doors?

Capcom revises its initial price point for the upcoming Nintendo 3DS title.
Resident Evil Revelations is due out for the Nintendo 3DS in just a couple of weeks, and up until now we were fully expecting to pay $49.99 for the game. This price, a bit higher than normal for 3DS titles, was apparently the result of the game being installed on a 4GB card instead of the usual 2GB.
While Capcom noted that it was confident the game’s quality was well worth the extra cash, they didn’t seem happy about the higher price point. And, according to a statement on their official site, they’ve been looking for weeks to find ways to eliminate the discrepancy. It looks like they figured it out.
As of now, Resident Evil Revelations is priced at the normal rate of $39.99. It’s worth noting that the price change only applies to United States version of the game – if you live somewhere else, you’ll need to stay tuned to Capcom for further updates.
What do you think of the pricing change? Is Capcom really fighting for the wallets of consumers, or just afraid the extra $10 will scare off potential buyers?

Retailers can’t keep the 3DS on shelves, but Nintendo is still doing worse now than in years before.
Nintendo released its official numbers today, and things don’t look too good. Despite the fact that the Nintendo 3DS outsold all other systems combined last week (in Japan, of course), Nintendo is still reporting major losses for the last quarter. According to earnings reports released by the company, Nintendo lost $623 million between the months of April and December 2011.
The company doesn’t seem confident in the near future, revising its original forecast of $580 million in losses through March 2012 to $838. Nintendo noted that while Nintendo 3DS hardware is moving at a much higher rate, the massive price cut they dropped on the system is contributing to their financial ails.
In one last bit of bad news, Nintendo revised its original sales predictions for the 3DS, Wii, and DS dropping expected 3DS and Wii sales by two million each, and DS sales by about 500,000. The decreased sales projections have been taken into account for the new loss predictions for 2012.
It’s worth noting that while Nintendo reports these numbers as a “loss,” all it means is that the company made less money in a particular quarter than they did in the same quarter of the previous year. Nintendo is still churning out massive profits, and the company is far from being financially unstable. It’s just the way companies go about reporting their finances.
We’ll keep you posted as other companies release their sales numbers and financial forecasts. 2011 was likely a tough year for everyone, with console hardware aging and rumors of the next-gen on the horizon.

Reports of game.co.uk being compromised appear to have been greatly exaggerated.
Early this morning, Softpedia posted an update alerting gamers to the fact that the Game Group website, located at game.co.uk, appeared to have been compromised. The report stemmed from a Pastebin post, which purportedly contained the email addresses and passwords of over 200 Game Group users. Site visitors were warned to change their passwords to be safe.
Game Group has responded to the alleged security breach by claiming that the information in question didn’t come from their website, and that none of the posted email addresses are those of their users. They went on to say that they (duh) take security very seriously, and that after looking into the Pastebin post, they can confidently claim that no user information has been compromised.
The company assured customers that their personal and payment information was safe, and invited anyone with questions to contact their customer service department. So, it looks like your Game Group information may be secure after all. However, you may want to change your password just in case – this wouldn’t be the first time a company has denied a very real security breach.
Do you think the hack is fake, or is it more likely that the company is trying to cover its tracks?

Faced with the loss of their CEO, GSC seeks funding to finish STALKER 2.
The GSC Game World saga continues to play out – what started with wayward tweets has evolved into a full-blown studio crisis. News has teetered back and forth between a complete closure of the studio and vague hopes for the future, but today marks the first time we’ve gotten any sort of detailed, concrete information from someone within the company.
Here’s the scoop: Posting on its Facebook account, the developer confirmed that STALKER 2 is still in progress, and development has not been suspended. Although there’s a glimmer of hope for fans of the series, one thing in the post stands out – in order for GSC to guarantee completion on STALKER 2, they’re going to need some financial backing.
From all accounts, the GSC team is working hard to finish STALKER 2, and they’re working even harder to secure the necessary funding to complete the game. While there’s still no guarantee that STALKER 2 will ever actually see a release, these statements do instill a bit of confidence in the developer’s intentions.
We’ll keep you posted as the story develops. For now, STALKER 2 appears to be moving forward, albeit delicately.

Numbers for the Vita’s third week on the market don’t bode well for the new handheld.
PlayStation Vita launched to an impressive 325,000 units sold, but tanked hard in its second week, dropping to 72,000. Unfortunately for Sony, the third week’s sales numbers are even worse – the device only managed to move 42,000 devices. While it’s obviously too soon to start ringing death bells for the device, the lack of interest in the Vita certainly isn’t inspiring confidence in its upcoming western launch.
The Vita, launched in Japan on December 17th, was outsold by the PS3, 3DS and original PSP on the hardware charts. As we saw yesterday, some retailers have even resorted to dropping the device price in order to get it off their shelves.
Naturally, the Japanese launch has little to do with the western launch, where games like Uncharted: Golden Abyss will likely draw a much larger number of buyers to the handheld’s open arms. However, one can’t help but draw conclusions from the rapid drop in interest for the console – high profile devices don’t usually fall of the map like this.
One thing is for sure – Sony is eventually going to drop the Vita’s price, maybe sooner than expected. If so, gamers may wait to pick it up until the inevitable discount, hoping to avoid a burn.
What do you think of the Japanese numbers? Are they having any impact on your willingness to buy a Vita?

Curious about the future of the Wii and Nintendo 3DS? Tune in tonight for details.
Later this evening, Nintendo will be holding one of their “Nintendo Direct” conferences for investors and other fans of the brand. Tonight’s update will focus largely on the Nintendo 3DS, though there are rumors that some Wii U information may also be forthcoming. There will also be updates regarding the future of the Wii, which has seen a steady decline in titles since Nintendo announced the Wii U.
The event is set to take place on Tuesday morning in Japan, putting it at 10pm EST or 7pm PST here in the States. Like other Nintendo Direct events, tonight’s will be broadcast on the Nintendo Ustream page – in Japanese. So if you want to tune in, you may want to find a translator. That, or wait for a translated version to pop up a few hours later.
Nintendo likely has a lot to talk about, with 3DS sales suddenly skyrocketing and the brand looking better than ever despite continuing to post financial losses. Tonight’s presentation will probably be designed to instill confidence in the company and let fans and shareholders know that good stuff is coming.
Will you watch the Nintendo Direct event?

Square Enix’s follow up to the maligned Final Fantasy XIII is off to a strong start in Japan. Duh.
If there’s one thing Japan loves, it’s Final Fantasy. So it’s not entirely surprising that Final Fantasy XIII-2, which launched earlier this week for Japanese gamers, has already rocketed to the top of the sales charts. The game moved 500,000 copies in its first week of release, toppling Monster Hunter 3G from the top of the charts and renewing confidence in the Final Fantasy brand.
Of course, Japanese sales trends aren’t always indicative of western performance (as I said, Monster Hunter was #1 until this happened), but it’s definitely good news for Square Enix that their hardcore fan base wasn’t so upset with FFXIII that they abandoned the brand entirely. The actual sales figure, around 525,000, accounts only for PS3 versions of the game.
Some Vita titles also managed to make the list, a good sign for the fledgling handheld. Here’s the top 20, for those of you that like tracking Japanese game sales:
01. [PS3] Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Square Enix, 12/15): 525,271
02. [3DS] Monster Hunter 3G (Capcom, 12/10): 208,427 (730,386)
03. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo, 12/01): 182,418 (789,871)
04. [3DS] Inazuma Eleven Go (Level-5, 12/15): 135,259
05. [3DS] Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo, 11/03): 112,533 (837,143)
06. [WII] Kirby Wii (Nintendo, 10/27): 71,028 (398,516)
07. [PSV] Hot Shots Golf 6 (Sony, 12/17): 61,412
08. [PSV] Uncharted Golden Abyss (Sony, 12/17): 48,224
09. [WII] Just Dance Wii (Nintendo, 10/13): 44,021 (323,293)
10. [WII] Poke Park 2 (Pokemon, 11/12): 43,829 (164,018)
11. [WII] Wii Party (Pokemon, 07/08/10): 42,632 (2,129,236)
12. [NDS] Magician's Quest: The Merchant's Store of Sorcery (Konami, 12/10): 35,068 (81,110)
13. [WII] Mario & Sonic at London Olympics (Pokemon, 11/12): 34,351 (64,573)
14. [PS3] Shin Kamaitachi no Yoru (Chunsoft, 12/17): 33,686
15. [PS3] BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend (Arc System Works, 12/17): 32,992
16. [WII] Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo, 11/11/10): 30,804 (734,046)
17. [WII] Taiko Drum Master Wii Ultimate Version (Namco Bandai, 11/23): 30,046 (100,284)
18. [PSV] Dynasty Warriors Next (Tecmo Koei, 12/17): 29,181
19. [PSV] Lord of Apocalypse (Square Enix, 12/17): 28,742
20. [NDS] One Piece Gigant Battle! 2 (Namco Bandai, 11/17): 28,406 (207,458)
Nintendo is clearly the king of the party in Japan, despite the temporary dominance of one game or another. In the meantime, we’ll just have to wait and see how FFXIII-2 is received here in the west. The previous game was the best selling in the history of the franchise, but also landed to lukewarm reviews.
How do you think FFXIII-2 will do when it’s released in the west? Also, don’t you just hate typing “FFXIII-2?”

The online gaming behemoth earns a huge pile of cash from its initial stock offering, but its value is already sliding down.
Initial public stock offerings, or IPOs, are usually a good indicator of how valuable a certain company is. When the IPO goes well, it shows that investors have confidence in the company and in its future profitability. When it goes poorly, it indicates that the company has a long way to go before earning the trust of potential shareholders.
Nexon, the Korea-based online gaming company responsible for the enormously successful MapleStory and Mabinogi, made the jump to public stock earlier this week. The company, which claims 1.2 billion registered players, has a bright financial future and a demonstrated record of keeping players around for months at a time, leading to a massive $1.17 billion haul as investors rushed to pick up stock.
Nexon’s IPO ended up being the largest to hit the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2011, and thanks to this huge success, the company is now riding high with an estimated valuation of between $7.69 billion and $8.97 billion. Of course, it wasn’t all roses and champagne – Nexon’s stock dropped by around 4 percent on its first day of open trading.
Nexon is probably a strong buy for the short term, but freemium companies have yet to demonstrate they can stay competitive over longer periods of time. One need only look to Zynga for an example of that principle in action. Then again, Nexon’s entrenched user base and attention to its community certainly put it in a strong position.
Do you play any Nexon games?

PS Vita will have fill support for Adobe Flash, if Sony has anything to say about it.
The brawl between Flash and mobile developers has flashed hot over the last few years, with Adobe recently announcing it would discontinue mobile development to focus on HTML-5 solutions instead. The announcement seemed like a victory for Apple, which for years has resisted bringing Flash applications to its phones and tablets. Flash is still a major part of most people’s web experience, and the software enables thousands of internet users to watch videos and engage interactive content.
Sony seems to disagree with Apple on the subject of Flash’s usefulness, and is currently in negotiations with Adobe to bring the service to the PlayStation Vita. On the one hand, it’s a savvy business move that ensures Vita owners will have access to as much online content as possible. On the other, Adobe’s recent shift in focus to HTML-5 hints that Sony’s push for Flash support may have only been savvy if executed five years ago.
Sony execs have confirmed that they’re still working with Adobe to try to find a solution that will work for both companies, but the tone of the interview doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Muneki Shimada, development head of Sony’s division two, indicated that negotiations are ongoing and Sony hasn’t “given up.” Something could be lost in translation here, but it certainly sounds like Sony is dealing with an intransigent group of Adobe developers reluctant to develop their software on another device.
Either way, the future of Flash on both the Vita and on mobile platforms is in doubt. If negotiations are successful, however, Vita would earn one more selling point to help put it ahead of its competitors.
Do you think Flash support is an important feature for a handheld gaming device?

Two Telltale employees are apparently really, really proud of their latest game.
Metacritic compiles the review scores of movies and games from all around the web, then uses them to assess an overall value. It’s a helpful service, but it’s led to quite a bit of crybaby nonsense from the gaming community. When Uncharted 3 landed an 8/10, some gamers cried foul and claimed that the score was just to hurt the Meta-rating. The same thing is happening for GameSpot’s 7.5/10 rating for Skyward Sword.
So it’s not surprising to see devs taking more notice of the service. We already saw Call of Duty devs asking gamers to give MW3 better user reviews, but now Telltale has taken it a step further by giving their own game high marks to bump up the Metacritic ladder.
Basically, employees of Telltale, who just released the Jurassic Park game, have been caught red-handed writing shining, perfect reviews of their latest game. The writers in question, both artists, offered such praise as “a mix between Heavy Rain and LA Noire,” but for some reason kept posting the exact same review under different usernames.
The game was hovering at a 10/10 despite review copies being hard to come by, and a little investigating quickly brought you from the review pages directly to the developer’s LinkedIn profiles. Oops!
Then again, Telltale is right when they say their employees can do whatever they want when they’re on the Internet, as long as they identify themselves. After all, what developer doesn’t believe their game deserves a ten? And the review scores were posted in the “User” area, so it’s not like there’s any real harm done.
So what do you think of this mess? Innocent mistake or fiendish plot?

Halo 4 is looking like it’s going to be one of the biggest releases of 2012, if not in terms of sales then definitely in terms of hype. It’s a big moment for the still-unproven 343 Industries, whose only contribution to the world of games so far is a pretty lame Xbox 360 Dashboard app. Details on what exactly we can expect in Halo 4 are slim; mostly we’re getting the basic developer line of “amazing action sequences” and “incredible set pieces” we get every time a top title returns.
Game Informer recently snagged Kiki Wolfkill (rad name) from 343 Industries and while she didn’t get specific about in-game plot events or the return of fan favorite characters, she was able to shed just a little bit of light on what sort of graphics experience is planned for this new reboot of the Halo franchise:
“It’s different from Anniversary. This is an engine based on some of the past Halo tech for sure. But it’s also something this team has been working on to sort of optimize it for what we’re doing. It’s a completely internal piece of technology, but it is based on a lot of the Halo foundational tech.”
While it’s nice to know that Halo 4 will receive a much bigger visual upgrade than what we’ve seen in the upcoming Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, it’s a little troubling to find out that the development team is using words like “optimized” and “past Halo tech.” I’m sure 343 feels the pressure of the community and is working hard to make Halo 4 the best game they can, but messing with the old engine and applying a few minor upgrades isn’t going to be enough to really bring the game into the next generation.
Some sneaky gamers have managed to pull a bit of Halo 4 alpha footage and post it to the web, and for the most part, it looks like Halo 3. Hopefully that’s just a rough cut.
Are you confident that 343 can handle Halo 4, or are you concerned with their lack of experience?

For an MMORPG game that was released in May 2003, EVE Developers continue to surprise with just how in touch with their player base they are!
A few of the move 'technical savvy' EVE players found a way to edit a few of EVE's client files , enabling them to watch their own video files, in game, on the Captain's Quarters screen.
Mostly, developers loathe the idea of outsiders fiddling and poking around in their game code, so it would only be natural to see this hole patched up right away, perhaps even a short server takedown to right the wrong? Right?? Wrong!
EVE developers decided that this was a great opportunity for some proactive development PR. There decision? Let's just make the whole process even easier.
According to the EVE developer blog:
"The hack was as easy as replacing a .BIK (BINK) video file with one of your own .BIK files, putting you in charge of what’s on TV"
They now provide three easy steps to getting your own video files up on your captains quarters screen for some serious in game sofa surfing.
Instructions from the EVE Developer blog
1. Download the BINK(.BIK) video conversion tool from here:http://www.radgametools.com/down/Bink/RADTools.exe. Using this tool, you should be able to convert most of your videos to BINK format, which is the industry standard when it comes to video playback in videogames. I recommend starting the first conversion process straight away since it may take a while.
2. Locate your EVE cache folder by following the guide found here:http://support.eveonline.com/Pages/KB/Article.aspx?id=371. Create a folder under your cache folder called “CQScreenVideos” if it doesn’t already exist.
3. Once a video has been converted to BINK format, copy it to the “CQScreenVideos” folder.
In a time where MMORPG developers are all looking to squeeze the most out of their product for as long as they can, it's refreshing to see that despite its age, EVE continues to do the simple things right... Like listening to the players!
Know any other dev team that could take a page out of this book?  Let us know your thoughts.

DICE has always been open and honest about the PC being the best platform for Battlefield 3. That is not to say, however, that the console versions will be of a lesser quality.
Producer Patrick Liu stresses this fact in a recent interview, guaranteeing PS3 and Xbox 360 owners awaiting for the release of their much-awaited FPS that they definitely won't be getting less from the game at all.
Said Liu in Edge's latest issue, "It has the same amount of destruction and the same amount of visual fidelity. It's also a misconception I've seen on the internet that the console version won't have jets - that's not true.
We've scaled the maps accordingly for console so it makes the pacing all right and the balancing is good. If you play a big Conquest map then the map is balanced accordingly.
If it's any consolation, if you can call it that, PS3 players have been promised that the DLC to the game will arrive one week early for their end over the others. As for the PC spec requirements of the game, you might want to check out this link here.

Armored Core V has been beset by multiple delays already, so imagine the joy of fans when From Software finally announced a brand new date for it.
Here's crossing fingers tight, though, that this will be the final one and that no other movement will happen again. Armored Core V is now set for a Japanese release date on January 26, 2012, giving a much clearer perspective to the then-vague Q1 2012 window.
It looks like devs are now more confident with how the final product is going to look like, since they originally put on hold the Ocotber release because they suppoedly wanted to polish the game more, based on what the beta testers gave them for feedback.
With over 500 mech parts to be made available, it should be no wonder why they've got a lot of work ahead of them still. Here's wishing the From Software team lots of luck, and hopefully, this time, they'll be able to meet the deadline they set for themselves.
Japanese gamers can get hold of Armored Core V when it comes out in January at ¥7,800.
