Square Enix has listened to your feedback. Well, not really.
We talked last week about Square Enix’s plan to consolidate nearly half of the Final Fantasy XIV servers in the hopes of improving the experience of players, but those players were apparently none too happy about the plan. After extensive forum battles and player-to-dev conversations, Square Enix has made a few minor tweaks, but left the major stuff intact.
Server merges will now take place March 27. The company isn’t ruling out new realms at the moment, but is naturally waiting to see what happens after the release of Final Fantasy XIV 2.0 before it makes any big decisions.
You can log into your account as of March 1 to choose what server you’d like to land in. Every server has a population cap, so you’ll want to lock yours down sooner rather than later; otherwise you risk ending up on a random realm assigned by Square Enix.
Here’s the full details:
First Stage: From 0:00 a.m. PST, March 1 (Thursday) to 0:59 a.m. PDT, March 12 (Monday), 2012.
- Players will still be able to change Worlds even after applying for a World transfer.
* Players will not be able to select Worlds that are already populated with the maximum number of characters, but players will be able to move from such Worlds to other Worlds. Note that if a player leaves one World to transfer to another World, and in the interim the first World is filled with the maximum number of characters, the player will no longer be able to transfer back to the original World.
* It is possible that some Worlds will reach the population limit very soon after World transfer applications begin.
Second Stage: From 1:00 a.m. PDT, March 12 (Monday) to 0:59 PDT, March 19 (Monday), 2012.
- Worlds that are populated with the maximum allowable characters will be fixed and locked.
- Locked Worlds cannot be selected as a transfer destination.
- As well, all players in locked Worlds will no longer be able to apply for World transfers.
For this reason, we recommend that players complete their World transfer applications in the First Stage.
What do you think of the plan to merge servers?

Square Enix provides FFXIV players with a new in-game mount. A very weird one.
In the world of Final Fantasy XIV, Goobbues are massive, lumbering creatures with dumfounded expressions and incredibly long arms. They’re not really much to remark on in most scenarios – at least they weren’t’ until now. Square Enix has a new purpose for the Goobbue, one that involves saddling up and jumping on top of one.
While the announcement first seemed like a joke, it does appear that Square Enix is serious about bringing Goobbues into the world as player mounts. If you speak with the right person in Vylbrand, you’ll be given the opportunity to pick up one of these bizarre companions for yourself. But you’d better hurry, as they’ll only be available until FFXIV Version 2.0 launches later this year.
This is definitely a fun way to let players that were in before the game’s revisions show off their street cred, but man are Goobbues ever weird. Are you planning to ride one?

Square Enix drops details on FFXIV’s billing structure so players know what to expect as the game shifts off the F2P mechanic.
Final Fantasy XIV has officially reached the end of its forced free beta, and Square Enix seems to think they’ve finally hit a point where people will be willing to pay to play. They announced the shift back to a regular subscription model about a month ago – now they’re ready to move forward with the change.
Here’s what that means for current players: As of January 5th, your FFXIV account will be suspended until you opt back into the billing system. Monthly fees will be set at $9.99 until the release of FFXIV 2.0, the updated version of the MMO, at which point they’ll bump up to $12.99. You’ll also need to pay $3.00 per extra character on your account – the basic subscription covers only one main character.
If you play FFXIV, you may want to check out their official site to get a bearing on what to expect. Then again, it’s pretty basic MMO stuff. You pay money; you get to play the game. The real question is whether players will be willing to shift from F2P back to a subscription model.
Do you think players will pay for FFXIV, or did the game already miss its chance?

The latest Final Fantasy MMO is finally making its way to your home console, but maybe not as soon as you think.
It’s been a year since the original launch of Final Fantasy XIV, and while a PlayStation 3 version was promised by Square-Enix, we haven’t heard much regarding when that would actually happen. Things have been tough on the game as of late, but Square is finally ready to go ahead with the PS3 release – in 2012.
The current target date for Final Fantasy XIV’s PS3 release is next October, so roughly two years after the game originally hit shelves. The statement on the game’s official website is a bit hard to understand; they’re apparently considering the PS3 release a “new” version of the game, representing all the improvements of the last few months.
Things are also going to change for players that are already enjoying the game, in the form of a switch from a free-to-play model to the more familiar subscription-based payment plan we normally see out of big MMOs.
Here’s a quote from the release outlining what you can expect:
“Following the results of the development and operations teams’ efforts, together with the release of the overall plans for the game’s future, we will bring the unbilled period to a close between late November and early December of 2011, and thereafter introduce our subscription-based billing system. Further details will be sent to the email address players submitted at the time of their FINAL FANTASY XIV account registration, and will also be posted on the Lodestone at a future date.
Needless to say, with the onset of the subscription-based billing system, operation and development of the game will proceed, and updates will continue to be released regularly as they have been. Between now and release of the new FINAL FANTASY XIV, we will do as much as possible by way of fine-tuning the game and adding new content. Our focus will be on the theme of a story that can only be experienced in the here and now, and the dramatic changes to Eorzea will be incorporated into that storyline. Each update will deliver an unprecedented and unrepeatable game experience. For those of you continuing to play, I promise that the release of these updates and the eventual transition to the new FINAL FANTASY XIV will both come smoothly and seamlessly.”
The statement from Square is very, very long and contains a massive amount of information regarding changes to the game. If you’re a FFXIV player and you’re passionate about the game, it’s probably in your best interest to check it out in full.
I’m curious to see how the large community of Final Fantasy XIV players react to this news – does anyone think moving to a subscription plan is a bad move? It seems like taking something that was once free and asking people to pay for it a year later is a surefire way to encourage them to find a new game.
Then again, once you have a year invested in an MMO, maybe you’d rather pay than leave your friends and characters behind. What do you think?

Square-Enix drops a huge bomb on FFXIV players by posting a massive list of upcoming changes to the crafting system including tweaks, material changes and the complete removal of some recipes.
“Final Fantasy XIV” players have been eagerly awaiting patch 1.19, which was delayed earlier this month for additional balance testing and bug fixes. While a major raid encounter was removed from the patch and pushed back to 1.19a, it looks like “FFXIV” players interested in the crafting professions still have plenty to look forward to when 1.19 finally drops on October 4th.
Major changes are taking place for nearly every recipe in the game, with large adjustments in how much material you need to craft items. While some players may be concerned about the impact this may have on the economy (fewer materials, lower demand, etc), Square-Enix says they’ve made careful calculations to minimize the effect these changes have on your character’s wallet.
From the Square-Enix forums:
“New recipes introduced in 1.19, however, will no longer require as many materials, meaning that, if left untouched, current intermediary part recipes will yield more items than crafters need. This could lead to an influx of those items in the market, and ultimately end up disrupting the balance of the in-game economy. To counter this, we have gone back to those intermediary part recipes and readjusted both the amount of materials required, as well as the number of items yielded with each successful synthesis.”
Now, I don’t play “FFXIV” so I’m not entirely sure what that paragraph means, but I think it basically comes down to this – since items require fewer parts, people who make parts will find that their part recipes generate a smaller number of parts, keeping the supply and demand curve in check and everyone happily rich (or poor).
Wow, now I don’t even know what my own paragraph means.
Anyway, if you want to look at the changes yourself, you’d better prepare your browser’s “Find” function. The full list is pretty massive, covering hundreds of items, ingredients and recipes.
Full patch notes for 1.19 will be published tomorrow, September 30, so stay tuned for more detailed updates once Square-Enix lets the community know what to expect.

You'll probably be agreeing with what Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada has to say about the Final Fantasy brand.
According to him, everything just went downhill following the Final Fantasy XIV launch last year. He made these feelings public at a press conference held in Japan earlier this morning. Despite his concession, however, he stressed that they will "continue with our reform work, which basically amounts to fully redoing the game, and hope to revive the FFXIV that should have been released."
At the recenty concluded TGS, Square Enix confirmed that they will be coming out with a remake of FFX for the PS Vita and the PS3. They're also pushing forward with their online campaign, confirming that Final Fantasy Type-0 will be available via digital distribution as well.

You must be wondering how come Final Fantasy XIV's free-to-play period is still ongoing, when usually MMORPGs hold it only for a maximum of 30 days. Well, Square Enix has got the answer for you in a recent interview.
"It was pretty much personally because I've been a player for so long," explained new producer Naoki Yoshida. "I wanted to make sure that I would only ask the player to pay for something once the team had established a firm plan for improvements.
The rationale behind this logic, said Yoshida was to show the players that "yes, it's still costing us a lot of money, and we're not getting that money back yet, but we're serious about making these changes. This is one of the ways that we can show players that we are serious and we are taking it seriously."
As to the main question of when the resumption of charges will happen, Yoshida said it's "still out in the open."

Immediately after Zidane and Kuja's latest costumes landed on Dissidia duodecim Final Fantasy, Square Enix is teasing you yet again with some more DLC goodies set to hit you next week.
Come April 7th, you will be treated to Sephiroth and Laguna 4th form costumes, each priced at JPY 300. Apart from that, three soundtracks will also be available, courtesy of FFVII and FFVIII, again, each tagged at JPY 300.
Square Enix has also previously confirmed that five tracks from FFXIII will also be headed to duodecim, although they still have yet to pin a date on when that's going to happen.
Nonetheless, we don't have to look too far ahead to enjoy all these FF goods in duodecim. Zidane and Kuja's 4th form costumes from FFIX are now available, as well as a 3-track FFXIV music set. All of them are priced at - you guessed it - JPY 300 each.

Patch 1.15a was recently sent out for Final Fantasy XIV Online. They're keeping things moving, and with Naoki Yoshida taking over things as the game's producer, you can bet there's going to be more to expect.
Yoshida says so in his latest producer's letter, posted over at FFXIV's official website. There, he talked about the changes brought about by the recent patch, but more importantly, what else you can expect to come your way in the future.
Patch 1.15a focused on the balancing skill and experience point awards. Next up on their to-do list is the difficulty level. Yoshi-P explains this line of thought.
"of course, we're still on the fence a bit about balancing the degree of difficutly for fifteen-member parties, but I personally am of the opinion that everyone playing together is what makes the game fun.
And so that is the direction in which I would like to take the game, and take it as quickly as possible. It was for that reason that I opted to balance the skill and experience points rewards first, with the intention of later tackling the difficulty level, rather than vice versa.
Further balancing adjustments are ongoing, and are being based on the new designs in place for a maximum party size of eight members, as well as the smaller four-member party, both of which I've added to our list of intended changes."
He also disclosed that he kept a close watch on the flow of things following the release of 1.15a. Based on his observations, "levels of difficulty for behests were less than ideal." To deal with this, they will then be working on some more improvements to "bonuses awarded when participating in groups of nine or more."
They've got a whole lot of plans going on for Final Fantasy XIV Online, so go ahead. Feel free to check out Yoshi-P's lengthy letter detailing all via the source link below.
