Square Enix has listened to your feedback. Well, not really.
We talked last week about Square Enix’s plan to consolidate nearly half of the Final Fantasy XIV servers in the hopes of improving the experience of players, but those players were apparently none too happy about the plan. After extensive forum battles and player-to-dev conversations, Square Enix has made a few minor tweaks, but left the major stuff intact.
Server merges will now take place March 27. The company isn’t ruling out new realms at the moment, but is naturally waiting to see what happens after the release of Final Fantasy XIV 2.0 before it makes any big decisions.
You can log into your account as of March 1 to choose what server you’d like to land in. Every server has a population cap, so you’ll want to lock yours down sooner rather than later; otherwise you risk ending up on a random realm assigned by Square Enix.
Here’s the full details:
First Stage: From 0:00 a.m. PST, March 1 (Thursday) to 0:59 a.m. PDT, March 12 (Monday), 2012.
- Players will still be able to change Worlds even after applying for a World transfer.
* Players will not be able to select Worlds that are already populated with the maximum number of characters, but players will be able to move from such Worlds to other Worlds. Note that if a player leaves one World to transfer to another World, and in the interim the first World is filled with the maximum number of characters, the player will no longer be able to transfer back to the original World.
* It is possible that some Worlds will reach the population limit very soon after World transfer applications begin.
Second Stage: From 1:00 a.m. PDT, March 12 (Monday) to 0:59 PDT, March 19 (Monday), 2012.
- Worlds that are populated with the maximum allowable characters will be fixed and locked.
- Locked Worlds cannot be selected as a transfer destination.
- As well, all players in locked Worlds will no longer be able to apply for World transfers.
For this reason, we recommend that players complete their World transfer applications in the First Stage.
What do you think of the plan to merge servers?

Why make new games when people will just keep buying the old ones?
Fans have been on a rampage trying to get Square Enix to remake Final Fantasy VII, but the company doesn’t seem to care. Instead, it has elected to bring the PlayStation 2’s Final Fantasy X to modern consoles, with an HD version due sometime this year. Unfortunately for fans of the franchise, details were scarce at the time of the project’s announcement.
New info has emerged that helps clarify what exactly Final Fantasy X HD is all about. And if you’re hoping for a complete, next-gen remake, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. Shinji Hashimoto, producer for Square Enix, has confirmed that the upcoming re-release is a re-mastering of the original a la ICO or Metal Gear Solid HD.
So it looks like the Final Fantasy X you remember will be present in full in this upcoming release, with a few minor upgrades to make it worth plopping down your cash. Not the best news in the world, but not terrible either.
Is it worth buying the same games over and over again for minor graphical upgrades?

Square Enix outlines its plan to integrate FFXIII-2 with your Facebook account.
Enjoying Final Fantasy XIII-2 but wish there were more ways to show off what a huge nerd you are to all of your casual acquaintances? Square Enix has you covered. The company has just announced that it plans to integrate Facebook functionalities with its latest RPG time-sink.
In the company’s press release, Square Enix confirmed that certain in-game features would be made available through Facebook integration. For example, you can post your achievements and trophies directly to your wall. Once you can use the Historia Crux, you’ll be able to share your party setup, battle scores, collected monsters and a myriad of other info to the social media site.
While it’s a cool idea to share your in-game accomplishments with friends and family, one has to wonder how many players are in that big of a hurry to reveal how much time they spend playing games like Final Fantasy. I’m surely not proud of the 60+ hours I spent on the last one.
What about you?

The new Coliseum mode pits players against old adversaries.
Are you enjoying Final Fantasy XIII-2? It’s been out for almost 24 hours, which means it’s time for DLC announcements! And Square Enix has not disappointed, detailing their upcoming content plans for the brand new RPG.
Starting February 7, FFXIII-2 players will be able to participate in downloadable Coliseum battles. Each battle pits you against a villain from a previous Final Fantasy game, and if you’re successful in your challenge, you can bring the defeated foe in to your party. Square Enix is also promising future DLC content that expands on the narrative of the game.
The first battle will contain Lightning and Sergeant Amodar. There’s no information on future battles, but here’s hoping Sephiroth makes an appearance (can you imagine him in your party?!).
Are you going to check out any of FFxIII-2’s DLC?

Another week, another edition of “On Shelves.” This week, like the weeks preceding it, is pretty dry. You’re looking at a bit of DLC, a couple of low profile titles, and not much else. This is likely our last lull week, with big titles on deck for the week following that of the 22nd.
That being said, here’s this week’s:
Victoria II: A House Divided
PC
ESRB Pending
Paradox Interactive
OilRush
UNIX, Mac, PC, PS3
ESRB Pending
Unigine Corp
The Sims 3: Master Suite Stuff
Mac, PC
ESRB Teen
Electronic Arts
Assassin’s Creed  Revelations – Mediterranean Traveler Map Pack
Xbox 360, PS3
ESRB Mature
Ubisoft
Quarrel
Xbox 360
ESRB E10+
Denki
Scarygirl
Xbox 360, PC, PS3
ESRB E10+
Square Enix
And there you have it. If you don’t see anything you like, just wait a week – FFXIII-2 and Soul Calibur are on their way.
Will you be picking up any of these games, or waiting until the next week’s drop?

Square Enix provides FFXIV players with a new in-game mount. A very weird one.
In the world of Final Fantasy XIV, Goobbues are massive, lumbering creatures with dumfounded expressions and incredibly long arms. They’re not really much to remark on in most scenarios – at least they weren’t’ until now. Square Enix has a new purpose for the Goobbue, one that involves saddling up and jumping on top of one.
While the announcement first seemed like a joke, it does appear that Square Enix is serious about bringing Goobbues into the world as player mounts. If you speak with the right person in Vylbrand, you’ll be given the opportunity to pick up one of these bizarre companions for yourself. But you’d better hurry, as they’ll only be available until FFXIV Version 2.0 launches later this year.
This is definitely a fun way to let players that were in before the game’s revisions show off their street cred, but man are Goobbues ever weird. Are you planning to ride one?

Square Enix drops details on FFXIV’s billing structure so players know what to expect as the game shifts off the F2P mechanic.
Final Fantasy XIV has officially reached the end of its forced free beta, and Square Enix seems to think they’ve finally hit a point where people will be willing to pay to play. They announced the shift back to a regular subscription model about a month ago – now they’re ready to move forward with the change.
Here’s what that means for current players: As of January 5th, your FFXIV account will be suspended until you opt back into the billing system. Monthly fees will be set at $9.99 until the release of FFXIV 2.0, the updated version of the MMO, at which point they’ll bump up to $12.99. You’ll also need to pay $3.00 per extra character on your account – the basic subscription covers only one main character.
If you play FFXIV, you may want to check out their official site to get a bearing on what to expect. Then again, it’s pretty basic MMO stuff. You pay money; you get to play the game. The real question is whether players will be willing to shift from F2P back to a subscription model.
Do you think players will pay for FFXIV, or did the game already miss its chance?

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Opens to dismal sales
Probably not the final, fantasy, but still worrying enough.
FFXIII-2 came out last week in Japan to the tune of half a million sales, which is around a third of the sales the original XIII saw, just over two years ago.
Whilst anyone who makes games would love that amount to shift, the game cost a couple million to make and half a mill is quite a low sale count when shooters are blowing up the market with almost a billion dollars in just a matter of weeks.
Squenix's franchise of FFXIII Titles continues into the nwe year with FF Versus XIII, and this recent lack of sales comes only months after Square said that their brand has been "greatly damaged" due to the troubled release of the MMORPG, Final Fantasy XV.

Square Enix’s follow up to the maligned Final Fantasy XIII is off to a strong start in Japan. Duh.
If there’s one thing Japan loves, it’s Final Fantasy. So it’s not entirely surprising that Final Fantasy XIII-2, which launched earlier this week for Japanese gamers, has already rocketed to the top of the sales charts. The game moved 500,000 copies in its first week of release, toppling Monster Hunter 3G from the top of the charts and renewing confidence in the Final Fantasy brand.
Of course, Japanese sales trends aren’t always indicative of western performance (as I said, Monster Hunter was #1 until this happened), but it’s definitely good news for Square Enix that their hardcore fan base wasn’t so upset with FFXIII that they abandoned the brand entirely. The actual sales figure, around 525,000, accounts only for PS3 versions of the game.
Some Vita titles also managed to make the list, a good sign for the fledgling handheld. Here’s the top 20, for those of you that like tracking Japanese game sales:
01. [PS3] Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Square Enix, 12/15): 525,271
02. [3DS] Monster Hunter 3G (Capcom, 12/10): 208,427 (730,386)
03. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo, 12/01): 182,418 (789,871)
04. [3DS] Inazuma Eleven Go (Level-5, 12/15): 135,259
05. [3DS] Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo, 11/03): 112,533 (837,143)
06. [WII] Kirby Wii (Nintendo, 10/27): 71,028 (398,516)
07. [PSV] Hot Shots Golf 6 (Sony, 12/17): 61,412
08. [PSV] Uncharted Golden Abyss (Sony, 12/17): 48,224
09. [WII] Just Dance Wii (Nintendo, 10/13): 44,021 (323,293)
10. [WII] Poke Park 2 (Pokemon, 11/12): 43,829 (164,018)
11. [WII] Wii Party (Pokemon, 07/08/10): 42,632 (2,129,236)
12. [NDS] Magician's Quest: The Merchant's Store of Sorcery (Konami, 12/10): 35,068 (81,110)
13. [WII] Mario & Sonic at London Olympics (Pokemon, 11/12): 34,351 (64,573)
14. [PS3] Shin Kamaitachi no Yoru (Chunsoft, 12/17): 33,686
15. [PS3] BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend (Arc System Works, 12/17): 32,992
16. [WII] Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo, 11/11/10): 30,804 (734,046)
17. [WII] Taiko Drum Master Wii Ultimate Version (Namco Bandai, 11/23): 30,046 (100,284)
18. [PSV] Dynasty Warriors Next (Tecmo Koei, 12/17): 29,181
19. [PSV] Lord of Apocalypse (Square Enix, 12/17): 28,742
20. [NDS] One Piece Gigant Battle! 2 (Namco Bandai, 11/17): 28,406 (207,458)
Nintendo is clearly the king of the party in Japan, despite the temporary dominance of one game or another. In the meantime, we’ll just have to wait and see how FFXIII-2 is received here in the west. The previous game was the best selling in the history of the franchise, but also landed to lukewarm reviews.
How do you think FFXIII-2 will do when it’s released in the west? Also, don’t you just hate typing “FFXIII-2?”

Assassin’s Creed is coming to Square Enix’s upcoming RPG epic. Yes, really.
Downloadable content certainly has a way of making you question the good sense of developers. Most of the time a DLC pack makes sense, but every now and then, a game company does something that really makes you scratch your head.
Case in point, Square Enix just announced that Final Fantasy XIII-2 players will have a very special costume available for purchase and download, that of Ezio Auditore da Firenze. Fans of the Assassin’s Creed franchise will immediately recognize the name, for Ezio is one of the most important characters in the Assassin’s Creed world.
Ezio’s costume will be an optional outfit for one of the new characters introduced in FFXIII-2, Noel Kreiss. FFXIII-2 is already stacking up an impressive list of DLC content, with weapons, costumes, and boss battles confirmed for the game months before its actual release. While it may not make since to western gamers to mix Ubisoft and Square Enix games, the two companies are pretty tight in Japan – Square Enix is the primary distributor for Ubisoft games. Square Enix is apparently a big deal in Japan; they also distributed Modern Warfare 3.
Look for the downloadable Ezio outfit to show up sometime after the launch of Final Fantasy XIII-2 (duh), which is scheduled for release sometime in early 2012. There’s no further information on whether it will be free, an exclusive, or what, so stay tuned for future updates.

The pre-order exclusives for Final Fantasy XIII-2 just keep on coming, with Square Enix and GameStop announcing yet another bonus for pre-order customers.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 is supposed to be everything that Final Fantasy XIII wasn’t, but we won’t know if Square Enix has succeeded at that until later next year. In the meantime, all we have to go on are the pre-order bonuses that keep cropping up all over the place, with everything from boss fights to bonus weapons being mentioned depending on where you choose to buy.
GameStop already has the exclusive costume for Serah, but it looks like they realized that Amazon has the drop on them with the Omega boss battle, so they’re upping the ante with this weapon:
The Genji Bow takes the form of either a bow or sword (duh) and allows you to attack more frequently, whatever that means. Not sure if it refills your ATB gauge faster or gives you a haste bonus, but it’s an in-combat boost either way. Here’s the catch though: the Genji Bow is only available to PowerUP Rewards members that pre-order the game; regular pre-orders will not receive anything besides the costume.
The bonus item is retroactive – if you’ve already pre-ordered and you’re a member, you’ll automatically receive it with your copy of FFXIII-2.
Pre-order bonuses mostly serve to make games review-proof by encouraging people to buy things before they read about them or try them, but we’re starting to see bonuses splintered into more and more specific tiers.
What do you think about offering a reward only to special sections of your customer base?

Find out what your fellow readers were talking about in this week’s edition of the mash.
It’s been an interesting week in the world of games, with everything from a stupid PETA scandal to swirling rumors regarding the next console generation. If you haven’t had time to check in on QJ over the last few days, don’t worry – we’ve compiled five of the most commented/jumped/contested posts from the last week for your viewing pleasure. Oh! And we have a new Comment of the Week. Party!
Here they are, in no certain order:
PETA Upset Again, This Time Over Mario
This post addresses PETA’s most recent video game complaint, regarding Super Mario 3D Land’s Tanooki suit. The organization argues that this furry Mario accessory sends the message that it’s okay to wear fur, and they’ve even gone so far as to make their own game where you play as a bloody Tanooki trying to save your skin. Predictably, commenters found this to be a very, very dumb thing.
Next-Gen Consoles On the Way
With Microsoft expected to announce the Loop/720 next year and the Wii U already on the way, next-gen rumors are flying all over the place. Most recently, we learned that a major Sony studio is already developing games with PS4 specs. Comments are a mixed bag here, with some readers excited, some dubious, and some very angry with me for even mentioning the phrase “PlayStation 4.”
Final Fantasy XV May Not Be Turn-Based
One of the producers of the Final Fantasy franchise has gone on record regarding the game shifting away from its turn-based roots, prompting a mix of comments from dismayed to excited. The post also discusses the future of the Final Fantasy franchise. The franchise has hit some rocky times as of late, so the next game (FFXIII-2) has a lot to fix.
PSN Shutting Down at Night for Young Korean Gamers
In Korea, games are serious business. They have a full-fledged professional gaming scene and thousands of people line up to watch the pros go at it. With intense gaming schedules being a part of many young Koreans, the government has instituted a law that forces gamers to log off for six hours a night. Sony is obliging by shutting their service down, and most commenters seem to agree that the law has potential. Weird.
Saints Row the Third Breaks Promise of PS3 Exclusive Content
THQ stated that the PS3 version of Saints Row the Third would have exclusive content, but unfortunately no on in the gaming community seems to have tracked it down. All versions of the game are essentially identical, and THQ didn’t have much to say on the subject. Commenters mostly agree that when a company says it’s going to do something, it should follow through.
So there’s your mash-up. Read ‘em and get to commenting. And, before I forget, it’s time to hand out the very serious and important “Comment of the Week.” This week’s winner is xnamkcor, for his/her comment on the PETA post:
“’PETA claims that the Tanooki suit sends the message that it’s okay to wear fur’
If there was anything I ever agreed with PETA about, it's that furries are bad.”
I think we can all agree with that one.

If you though Europe was going to get all of the good stuff, this announcement should warm your Final Fantasy-loving heart.
We heard last month that Final Fantasy XII-2 would be getting a pretty cool collector’s edition when released in the European market, but Square Enix was quiet about whether fans in the States could expect to see something similar.
Well, the wait is over. Here is your Final Fantasy XIII-2 Collector’s Edition:
And if you’re one of the people that decides to upgrade your game to the CE, here’s what you can expect to find:
“Premium” packaging with art by Yoshitaka Amano
4-disc game soundtrack
Concept art book
It’s not really a massive collector’s edition compared to some of the craziness we’ve seen lately, but it is priced at a much more comfortable $79.99. That’s only $20 more than usual, as opposed to Skyrim’s insane price doubling.
You can order the CE from Amazon or at Best Buy or GameStop, with different bonuses depending on where you go. GameStop orders receive a costume for Serah, Amazon customers get the Omega fight, and Best Buy orders get a prequel novel. I’d say Amazon has the edge here.
What would you like to see added to the Final Fantasy XIII-2 Collector’s Edition?

The latest Final Fantasy MMO is finally making its way to your home console, but maybe not as soon as you think.
It’s been a year since the original launch of Final Fantasy XIV, and while a PlayStation 3 version was promised by Square-Enix, we haven’t heard much regarding when that would actually happen. Things have been tough on the game as of late, but Square is finally ready to go ahead with the PS3 release – in 2012.
The current target date for Final Fantasy XIV’s PS3 release is next October, so roughly two years after the game originally hit shelves. The statement on the game’s official website is a bit hard to understand; they’re apparently considering the PS3 release a “new” version of the game, representing all the improvements of the last few months.
Things are also going to change for players that are already enjoying the game, in the form of a switch from a free-to-play model to the more familiar subscription-based payment plan we normally see out of big MMOs.
Here’s a quote from the release outlining what you can expect:
“Following the results of the development and operations teams’ efforts, together with the release of the overall plans for the game’s future, we will bring the unbilled period to a close between late November and early December of 2011, and thereafter introduce our subscription-based billing system. Further details will be sent to the email address players submitted at the time of their FINAL FANTASY XIV account registration, and will also be posted on the Lodestone at a future date.
Needless to say, with the onset of the subscription-based billing system, operation and development of the game will proceed, and updates will continue to be released regularly as they have been. Between now and release of the new FINAL FANTASY XIV, we will do as much as possible by way of fine-tuning the game and adding new content. Our focus will be on the theme of a story that can only be experienced in the here and now, and the dramatic changes to Eorzea will be incorporated into that storyline. Each update will deliver an unprecedented and unrepeatable game experience. For those of you continuing to play, I promise that the release of these updates and the eventual transition to the new FINAL FANTASY XIV will both come smoothly and seamlessly.”
The statement from Square is very, very long and contains a massive amount of information regarding changes to the game. If you’re a FFXIV player and you’re passionate about the game, it’s probably in your best interest to check it out in full.
I’m curious to see how the large community of Final Fantasy XIV players react to this news – does anyone think moving to a subscription plan is a bad move? It seems like taking something that was once free and asking people to pay for it a year later is a surefire way to encourage them to find a new game.
Then again, once you have a year invested in an MMO, maybe you’d rather pay than leave your friends and characters behind. What do you think?

Square-Enix drops a huge bomb on FFXIV players by posting a massive list of upcoming changes to the crafting system including tweaks, material changes and the complete removal of some recipes.
“Final Fantasy XIV” players have been eagerly awaiting patch 1.19, which was delayed earlier this month for additional balance testing and bug fixes. While a major raid encounter was removed from the patch and pushed back to 1.19a, it looks like “FFXIV” players interested in the crafting professions still have plenty to look forward to when 1.19 finally drops on October 4th.
Major changes are taking place for nearly every recipe in the game, with large adjustments in how much material you need to craft items. While some players may be concerned about the impact this may have on the economy (fewer materials, lower demand, etc), Square-Enix says they’ve made careful calculations to minimize the effect these changes have on your character’s wallet.
From the Square-Enix forums:
“New recipes introduced in 1.19, however, will no longer require as many materials, meaning that, if left untouched, current intermediary part recipes will yield more items than crafters need. This could lead to an influx of those items in the market, and ultimately end up disrupting the balance of the in-game economy. To counter this, we have gone back to those intermediary part recipes and readjusted both the amount of materials required, as well as the number of items yielded with each successful synthesis.”
Now, I don’t play “FFXIV” so I’m not entirely sure what that paragraph means, but I think it basically comes down to this – since items require fewer parts, people who make parts will find that their part recipes generate a smaller number of parts, keeping the supply and demand curve in check and everyone happily rich (or poor).
Wow, now I don’t even know what my own paragraph means.
Anyway, if you want to look at the changes yourself, you’d better prepare your browser’s “Find” function. The full list is pretty massive, covering hundreds of items, ingredients and recipes.
Full patch notes for 1.19 will be published tomorrow, September 30, so stay tuned for more detailed updates once Square-Enix lets the community know what to expect.

You'll probably be agreeing with what Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada has to say about the Final Fantasy brand.
According to him, everything just went downhill following the Final Fantasy XIV launch last year. He made these feelings public at a press conference held in Japan earlier this morning. Despite his concession, however, he stressed that they will "continue with our reform work, which basically amounts to fully redoing the game, and hope to revive the FFXIV that should have been released."
At the recenty concluded TGS, Square Enix confirmed that they will be coming out with a remake of FFX for the PS Vita and the PS3. They're also pushing forward with their online campaign, confirming that Final Fantasy Type-0 will be available via digital distribution as well.
