Remember those FIFA 11 security breaches earlier? EA want to put a stop to it.

The maker of World of Warcraft is concerned over the potential security risks posed by the recent hacking of another popular MMO.
We reported last week that Rift, a very popular MMORPG published by Trion Worlds, had suffered a major security breach. The hackers assumedly didn’t get any credit card information, but user passwords may have been compromised. This led Trion to reset the Rift passwords for all users, just to be safe. They also awarded players a special item that awards players 10% more gold when looting, in case they had to take the realms down.
Today, Blizzard fired a message out to World of Warcraft subscribers via its official Twitter account, stating that if you use the same password for more than one game, it may be a good idea to change it. Since Rift password information has potentially been compromised, it’s safe to assume that clever hackers may try that information to access accounts in different games.
Blizzard didn’t call Rift out by name, referring only to “one of the more popular MMOs,” but the message is clear – if you play Rift, make sure your password is safe. If your Rift account and WoW account share similar information, both are at risk regardless of which developer is compromised.
This is an interesting moment for the world of gaming. No matter how amazing Blizzard’s internal security may be, they’re only as strong as their users and the other games those users play. Seems frustrating, from a security perspective.
Did you get caught up in the Rift hack? And do you use the same password across several sites/services?

The hugely popular freemium MMO has suffered a devastating security breach.
Nexon has an incredible empire going right now, with games like MapleStory, Combat Arms and Mabinogi quietly amassing millions of players while the gaming industry obsesses over games like Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3. It’s really quite amazing – they have some of the largest subscriber numbers in the industry and not too many “gamers” are that familiar with their work.
MapleStory is one of their largest successes, boasting over 100 million subscribers – that’s ten times World of Warcraft. Of course, MapleStory is free to play, and Nexon has confirmed only around a million players purchasing things in the cash shop, but the game is definitely a large player in the global MMO market. Now, it looks like some of those players’ information may be at risk thanks to a fairly large hacker attack.
Nexon reported that it discovered a breach of its South Korean network, which resulted in the information of over 13 million subscribers being compromised. The information includes usernames, real names, passwords and the residential registration number of the player. At this time, the breach only affects Korean players, as Nexon uses separate servers for each country. However, it stands to reason that security holes in one network exist in others, so MapleStory players should be wary regardless of their location.
Nexon cannot confirm whether the information was actually stolen, they can only say that it was accessible. Either way, it’s a harsh lesson for one of the larger companies in the freemium market, especially when you consider how important it is that Nexon keeps your credit card info on file. If people are unwilling to share their information with Nexon, their cash shop goes right down the drain.
Do you play MapleStory? Are you concerned over Nexon’s ability to protect your personal information?

EA’s plan to demand Origin accounts for Battlefield 3 access doesn’t seem to have worked out as they planned.
Battlefield 3 was a massive, massive launch, with 5 million copies sold in the first week. While the majority of players were able to get into the game fairly easily, a significant number reported major problems with EA’s Origin service. One report I read had nearly 30 steps taken by the player just to fire the game up for the first time. These problems seem to have fallen mostly on PC gamers, though console owners did have a bit of issue with crashing Origin servers blocking new registrations.
EA’s plan, of course, was to loop new players into their proprietary Origin system. Why let Steam take some of your profits when you can force players into another system, especially when you know they’re going to buy your game regardless of the hassle? Naturally, some players were very unhappy about the requirement, which once again unfairly impacts those that game on their computers.
It didn’t take long before a group of hackers, known collectively as Razor1911, hacked the BF3 client and removed the Origin requirements from online play. If you want to play Battlefield but don’t want to deal with Origin, it’s now a possibility – though EA will likely kill the functionality as quickly as they can.
The crack is not engineered to give players a free copy of the game, and works only on retail copies purchased legitimately from an online or brick and mortar shop. Here’s a statement from Razor1911:
“This release is dedicated to our fans worldwide who bought this game on legal way and don't want to install the trojan from Electronic Arts to play online.”
As a console gamer, I could care less about having an Origin account. I don’t have to suffer through using a browser to access the game, nor do I have to run some garbage program in the background just to play my favorite titles. I talked a bit about how annoying the Origin setup was in my PoV piece earlier in the week, but it’s been pretty smooth sailing for us console players so far.
But if you’re a PC gamer and you’re fed up with Origin’s ridiculous EULA or computer-bombing capabilities, it looks like the solution is out there. Just don’t be surprised if you end up with some sort of disciplinary action – EA will probably come down hard on hackers in the hopes of sending a message.

This is so messed up it's true. According to reports, South Korean cops have captured five North Korean hackers who have been breaching through security systems of online games to steal money.
Their M.O, according to the Seoul-based authorities, use farm bots to gather items from games such as Lineage, which they will then sell over the auction systems in exchange for real money.
So said Senior Officer in South Korea's International Crime Investigation Unit, Chun Kil-hwan, in an official statement, "They regularly contacted North Korean agents for close consultation." Before the hackers were foiled, they had already managed so far to steal about US$ 6.3 million in the past two years. After getting their cuts from the transactions, they will then pass over the rest of the stolen funds to North Korean officials.
The hackers, Mr. Chung also posited, are graduates of North Korea's elite science universities.
It is of the belief, furthermore, that North Korea is resorting to such dirty tactics in order to buoy up their funds, which have been drastically dwindling in the past several years, thanks to the economic sanctions imposed upon them.
North Korea has so far denied knowledge regarding any of these allegations, and have instead pointed the blame finger back to Seoul police, claiming that they are merely fabricating this conspiracy to put them in an even worse light.
