Zynga is known for copy/pasting its games, but this time the original developer isn’t sitting idly by.
Zynga has quickly become a powerful force in the world of social and mobile gaming, though recent rumors indicate the company could be on shaky financial footing. Zynga is known for its massively popular casual games, but many gamers may not know that the company is also notorious for stealing those games from established indie developers.
Zynga has faced lawsuits for both FarmVille and Mafia Wars, which are Zynga’d-up clones of MyFarm and Mob Wars, respectively. And the company continues its copy/paste development strategy without shame, this time cloning the official 2011 iPhone Game of the Year, TinyTower.
NimbleBit called Zynga out with a passive-aggressive infographic, one that wishes the company luck but showcases the many ways in which their concept was ripped off. Check it out:
What do you think of Zynga’s cloning strategy? It works in terms of sales, but it isn’t earning them any support in the gaming community.
Oh, if you want more info on Zynga’s long history of theft, check out this excellent article on Edge.

The maker of Farmville and others is ready to be a publicly traded company. But will investors come aboard?
If you’re a young company and you want to show everyone how awesome you are, your initial public stock offering is a very important day. We saw how well it went for Nexon earlier in the week, and now it’s Zynga’s turn to jump in on the sweet, sweet profitability of the stock market. Zynga shares have been set at an initial price of $10, giving the games developer a rough valuation of $7 billion.
There’s only one problem – investors don’t seem like they’re getting on board. Since launching earlier this morning, Zynga’s stock has already tanked by 7.4%. Stocks saw a brief surge upon launch, but they have been on the decline ever since. Unlike other tech firms, Zynga failed to ride the usual “pop” that occurs when a big company drops an IPO. Or, failed to ride it as high.
This could be evidence that investors are wary of Zynga’s shady reputation (and the way the company has been losing value all year), or it could just be the same old stock market jitters we see from time to time. However, Zynga remains a powerful and profitable force in the world of freemium games, so it’s safe to assume there is at least a short-term future in their stock. It’s not uncommon for companies to bounce up a touch, then fall – Zynga just did it a little more quickly than others.
That being said, it’s up to Zynga now to stay profitable. If they can continue brining new users in and milking cash out of their current players, they stand only to gain ground in the market.
Would you buy Zynga stock?

The Farmville and Empires and Allies creator has plenty of titles planned for the future, some of which may exist completely independent of Facebook.
Zynga’s story is one of legend – a small indie company builds simple but addictive game and in the process becomes a game development juggernaut. Zynga’s influence on the world of social gaming is so large that it actually forced Facebook to back down on its implementation of Facebook credits – no small feat considering the massive power Facebook wields to crush or promote new games.
Zynga has shown no signs of slowing down since setting up shop in 2007, with 2010’s CityVille recently surpassing FarmVille as its most popular and most played game. In a press conference held last week, Zynga announced a number of new titles and plans to perhaps start a gradual shift away from Facebook and towards independence.
Here’s a quick rundown on the games they talked about, though they noted they have at least 10 new IPs in development:
CastleVille
In  CastleVille you’ll play the leader of a small territory and will work with its inhabitants to grow crops, obtain land and defend your sovereignty. Details are scant, but it’s safe to assume there will be significant opportunities to grief your friend’s kingdoms.
Hidden Chronicles
Hidden Chronicles is a departure from the traditional Zynga game model, relying on static pictures that the player has to investigate. Players investigate a place called Ramsey Manor, and the game sounds quite a bit like the exploration phases of the Professor Layton series.
Zynga Bingo
Zynga Bingo is basically Bingo, but benefits from integration with other Zynga Casino titles. So if you’re winning chips in one game, you can transfer them to Zynga Bingo as you see fit.
Zynga also announced a couple of interesting things that indicate their pushing away from Facebook including HTML-5 support for mobile gaming and something called a zTag, which was described as a space for gamers to connect with one another.
How do you feel about the future of social gaming? Is there room for innovative titles or are they all silly distractions?

[Farmville Logo]No official announcement as yet, but it does appear likely we will see Farmville on the big screen sometime in the future. Yup. Farmville.

Though it had been hinted previously that Mafia Wars [link] may make its way into the feature film business, a Farmville movie comes as a bit of surprise.
Unless Zynga plans to merge the two and have the Mafioso living on the farm, and then the animals attack the Mafia?
Or maybe the animals start their own Mafia? Chickens vs Ducks?
[Farmville Screenshot]
Ok, enough digression. The Farmville movie is hinted at having the help of the writers of Toy Story, and I am, ashamedly, a fan of those movies. They really do capture the imagination and the CGI is awesome too.
Zynga is not making any official announcements, but it is the writers of Toy Story that seem to be letting the 'pigeons' out of the farm, or the sheep out of the pen, or something! According to IGN:
When asked about upcoming projects, Hollywood blockbuster-writers Alec Sokolow and Joel Cohen said:
"We are also working on several new and very exciting opportunities. We're in conversations with Zynga to do something with one of their brands. Can't really say too much on that front yet, but 'Old MacDonald' didn't have a factory, if you get our drift."
Video games into movies has always been a very hit & miss genre. Successes do exist, e.g. the first Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, every Resident Evil, but there are so many failures. Failures based on games with good story lines (no offence Zynga).
Can't really see there being enough depth in Farmville to warrant a script, but hey, Hollywood has done crazier things before!

biowareBioWare has worked on different flavors of games, but they made sure they implemented a strong RPG component to them. On one hand, you have the medieval adventure of Dragon Age, then on the other, you have a sci-fi third-person shooter in Mass Effect. Those are two different games, but they have very critical similarities in the role-play department. According to BioWare lead designer Mike Laidlaw, gamers are actually ready for more - they just don't know it yet.

gdc11They didn't have AAA million-dollar projects, but Rovio and Zynga still managed to clean up in their respective platforms. 2010 was a huge year for the two developers, having released highly successful titles in the past year. Would be great to be able to take a page out of their books, which is why they'll be sharing the experience in GDC 11.
