Chris Avellone: "Player Convenience" hurts RPG's
And enjoying having a player fanbase hurts game companies
Chris Avellone recently spoke with Industry Gamers about the current state of video games and where they are headed in terms of genre and gameplay. Avellone is a veteran, having worked on Planetscape:Torment, Fallout 2 and of course, Fallout New Vegas, Avellone knows how people play and yet seems that desiging for certain types of players can be frustrating.
Speaking with Industry Gamers he said that "the 'advances' have been more for player convenience - sometimes good, sometimes bad - in my opinion. Journals, quest compasses that point directly to the goal and show you the route, auto-maps, etc. are helpful; at the same time, I think it undermines the thrill of victory and discovery and a lot of what makes an RPG an RPG"
I've heard of the argument that over the past decade game designers have gotten soft on players and provide them with too much when it comes to games. I think Avellone is making a stance more on just the RPG genre itself rather than calling out flawed game design. Avellone was a lot more double-edged about the situation saying that in terms of non-interface elements he felt "the idea of morally grey choices and more focus on actions and consequences" have been great "for all RPG's."
In the past five years, RPG's have gotten a bit more sophisticated from the old Final Fantasy route of world ending, go help out. Avellone's own Planetscape Torment began to break the mould by introducing more of a grey system of good verus evil, rather than just fighting a big bad. There was another addition to Avellone enjoying new-gen RPG's with voice acting has really helped the RPG along well.
Avellone also talked about how the RPG genre is something that should really be added to gameplay more than just tacked on, for game's that do genre-bending. "Developers are seeing the worth in customization, levelling, dialogue, choice and reactivity and other elements that would normally be considered RPG mechanics and introducing them into multiple titles." Hopefully, Avellone will be working on the South Park game and making it worth it's weight in RPG gold.

Ó

Sega’s decision to push the game out of its normal schedule results in a big win for players.
The Yakuza series, at first, was updated like clockwork. Sega’s initial design for the franchise was a new sequel almost every year, with Yakuza landing in 2006, Yakuza 2 hitting 2008, 3 released in 2009 and 4 in 2010. It’s a release schedule that shouldn’t be unfamiliar to gamers, especially in 2011, the year of thirds.
But Sega elected to push Yakuza 5 out of its release schedule, which at the time had some gamers concerned about the project’s viability. But Sega’s intent with the extra development time is becoming more clear now that some details on the game have been released to the public.
The producer of Yakuza 5, Masayoshi Yokoyama, has indicated that this game is intended to be the San Andreas of its franchise, i.e. a game that dramatically expands on the precedents set in previous games and creates an entirely new experience in the process. Some things remain, like the core gameplay and the fact that the game is a PS3 exclusive, but almost everything else is being rebuilt from the ground up.
The intent of the developers is to include five complete cities in Yakuza 5 – if you’ve played any of the previous titles, Yokoyama indicated that each city will be similar in scale to Sotenbori or Ryuku. He likens the development process to creating five games at the same time, and I wouldn’t doubt him for a second – cities are very hard to build.
There’s still not much info regarding when Yakuza 5 will actually hit shelves, but for now you can assume it’s quite a ways away. Late 2012 or early 2013 are probably the best-case scenarios.
But, it looks like the game that does land will be a more powerful, more interesting and more impressive version of the franchise.
What do you think about Yakuza’s extended development time? Worth it, or too long to wait?

A huge patch to the incredibly difficult game adjusts some stats, item drops and other details.
Dark Souls is quickly earning a reputation as one of the hardest games ever made. Every post or update I see about it makes some sort of passing mention of its difficulty. Not having played Dark Souls, I can’t comment on whether or not it’s truly difficult, but it certainly seems so from where I sit.
Thanks to a large patch, released yesterday here in the States, Dark Souls may have just gotten a tiny bit easier. The patch is also live in the U.K., but only for the PS3 version of the game.
The patch addresses a number of concerns by fixing glitches, improving targeting, and upping the rate at which items drop. The patch notes are long, but here are some of the greatest hits:
Enemy soul drops improved
Covenant and Equipment Enhancement item drops improved
Paying for sins is cheaper
Lock-on improved
Freezes fixed
Stuck issues resolved
You can check out the full patch notes here: Dark Souls Patch Notes
What did you think of Dark Souls? Incredibly difficult, or incredibly overrated?

The lovable indie game shows up on one of gaming’s biggest platforms, with a few upgrades to boot.
Cave Story is a simple but innovated platformer created by independent game developer Daisuke Amaya. The game was initially released for free, but its massive success gave it the opportunity to pop up in a few different mediums. Versions popped up all over the gaming world, but the two most high profile ports are likely the 3DS version and the one that has just dropped to Steam.
This latest iteration of Cave Story, now downloadable on Steam for around $10 depending on your region, has a completely remastered soundtrack and a slightly overhauled graphics engine. Nothing so serious that you won’t recognize the game, but just enough to make it worth shelling out a few bucks in lieu of downloading the free version.
Cave Story has seen high praise for its sheer size, causing many reviewers to compare it to classic platformers such as Castlevania and Metroid. The game features fast-paced shooting in tight spaces, with tons and tons of enemies attacking from all sides. The whole thing looks pretty chaotic, and reminds me of some of the more intense side-scrolling shooters of the old days.
Here’s a link to the game’s entry on Steam, if you’re interested in giving it a try: Cave Story
Do you like seeing indie developers spread their products out and make some money, or should free games stay free?

If you want to see how your new Panda-mage will fare in Blizzard’s upcoming World of Warcraft expansion, now is the time.
Are you planning to carry your World of Warcraft character into the Mists of Pandaria? If so, you should probably have a look at how your talents will be changed when the expansion  lands sometime next year. Blizzard has released the first version of its official Mists talent calculator, giving you a chance to test a few builds out.
Of course, talents, spells, and everything else you find in an expansion are always in flux, so don’t get too attached to anything you create. The calculator is just intended as a tool to familiarize you with class changes and prepare for your first few days – not as a concrete promise of what your character is going to be like when the game launches.
Before you get too excited, the talent calculator is sadly missing the new Monk class, so if you were ready to plan out your Brewmaster you’re going to have to wait a few more weeks. Other than that, the calculator is available for all classes.
Honestly, I hope there are some big changes coming. I just went through the Mage and Shaman talent calcs and they’re pretty awful. The new tier system has promise, but not if it forces you to take things you’re never going to use. The focus on Polymorph for Mages is curious – sheeping hasn’t been important since the pre-TBC days.
What do you think of the new talent calculator?

Looking towards the future of the enormously successful Elder Scrolls game, is it possible that we’ll be visiting Morrowind soon?
Skyrim is a massive game, both in terms of gameplay time and in terms of pure size. The geographic layout of Skyrim isn’t the largest map ever conceived, but it’s certainly one of the most detailed and is packed with more activities per square yard than any other game I can think of off the top of my head.
But recently discovered evidence indicates that the province of Skyrim may be just the beginning for this, the fifth game in the Elder Scrolls series.
One savvy 19-year-old gamer has discovered that the entire landmass of Tamriel was actually built into Skyrim. For those that are unfamiliar with the franchise, Skyrim is just one nation in the larger empire of Tamriel – Morrowind and Oblivion are also parts of this empire. What this gamer has figured out is that Bethesda built every part of Tamriel into the map, even though players can currently only access Skyrim itself.
Right now, invisible walls block progress to those other locations. But it’s entirely possible that we’ll see DLC aimed at expanding our character’s travels. After all, Bethesda has to have built the entire landmass for a reason – it could be for DLC, it could be for looks, and it could be for the benefit of modders.
Do you think opening the lands of Tamriel is a good plan for DLC, or would you rather see more Skyrim (the nation)-specific content?

As if Bethesda didn’t have enough to do this week, they’ve gone an announced a brand new edition of their 2010 hit.
You’d think Bethesda would be focused entirely on the upcoming launch of Skryim, but naturally they’re a big studio and they can do more than one thing at a time. We’ve just got word that Fallout: New Vegas will have an Ultimate Edition package, set to hit shelves on February 7, 2012. So fellas, if you’re looking for that perfect Valentine’s gift for your imaginary girlfriend, you’re in luck.
New Vegas Ultimate Edition will come with the original Fallout: New Vegas content as well as every downloadable content pack released since the game hit shelves. This includes Lonesome Road, Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, Gun Runner’s Arsenal and Courier’s Stash. The level cap will bounce up to 50 thanks to the new content, and the game will have four new areas: the Divide, Sierra Madre Casino, Big MT research crater and Zion National Park.
Based on what we’ve seen in the past, it sure seems like waiting to buy games is the most financially responsible thing you can do. Why pay $60 for a game, plus $10 per DLC when you can wait a couple of years and get the entire thing for less?
I guess it’s the curse of being an early adopter. Still, I never got a chance to play New Vegas, so maybe now’s the time. Or, well, February.
Are you going to pick up the ultimate edition?

Find out what games real gamers selected as the best of the year, from a contest that earned over two million votes.
GamesMaster’s Golden Joystick Awards are different from other award given out in the games industry, because the people who select the winners are the people that play the games. The Golden Joysticks compile their list of winners based exclusively on votes from players, which means there are not usually any big surprises when the winners list comes out.
One could note that since the votes really only represent the popular gaming mind, excellent but less-known games don’t have much of a chance of winning. Either way, the awards do help us get a pretty good idea of what gamers liked in the last few months, and what they’re still playing. You’ll notice a big wins for Mojang (Minecraft), Ubisoft (Assassin’s Creed) and Rovio (Angry Birds), but the year clearly belongs to Activision/Blizzard (StarCraft, World of Warcraft, Black Ops and Guitar Hero). It probably doesn’t hurt that most of the titles on the list seem to be available for more than one system.
Here’s the list, compiled by GamePro:
Action/Adventure Game of the Year: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Mobile Game of the Year: Angry Birds Rio
Roleplaying Game of the Year: Fallout: New Vegas
Massively Multiplayer Online Game of the Year: World of Warcraft
Fighting Game of the Year: Mortal Kombat
Racing Game of the Year: Gran Turismo 5
Sports Game of the Year: FIFA 11
Strategy Game of the Year: StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
Music Game of the Year: Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock
Free to Play Game of the Year: League of Legends
Downloadable Game of the Year: Minecraft
Shooter Game of the Year: Call of Duty: Black Ops
One to Watch Award: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Innovation of the Year: Nintendo 3DS
Outstanding Contribution: Sonic the Hedgehog
Ultimate Game of the Year: Portal 2
I’m pretty surprised to see the 3DS on the list, since it gets a lot of flak from players and the press, but I guess there weren’t’ many other innovations to speak of.
Remember that winners are taken exclusively from games that game out within the last 12 months, so don’t throw a hissy fit if your favorite game isn’t there unless you’re sure it’s eligible.
That being said, do you see anything in this list worth throwing a hissy fit over?

Tim Cain, a former series producer for the Fallout series, leaves Carbine Studios and heads to Obsidian. Perhaps a new Fallout title is in the works?
The Fallout series has seen its fair share of developers. Created by Tim Cain in 1997, the original Fallout game was produced by Interplay. Fallout 2 followed in 1998, and the series went relatively dark until Bethesda released Fallout 3 in 2008 (Brotherhood of Steel notwithstanding). The most recent title in the franchise was produced by yet another developer, Obsidian Entertainment.
Tim Cain is now headed to serve as senior programmer at Obsidian, and while the press release doesn’t give us any information about another Fallout title, it would certainly be nice to think that Cain is returning to pick up the franchise he invented. New Vegas has just about run its course, with the Lonesome Road DLC likely being the last such content pack we see for a while to come.
Of course, Fallout has been known to bounce from studio to studio, so even snagging Cain might be enough to secure the next game for Obsidian. The only official title in the works at the studio is the Wheel of Time video game, named for the book series by Robert Jordan on which it is based.
I’d love to see another Fallout game, but it’s worth noting that Cain has spent years away from the franchise and it’s turned into a completely different beast. I guess, for the moment, we’ll just have to cross our fingers and hope for the best.
Would you like to see Obsidian put Cain to work on a brand new Fallout game?

You better be making good time with the Lonesome Road DLC for Fallout: New Vegas, because as soon as next week hits, you'll be getting yet another DLC from Bethesda.
This time, it's the Gun Runners' Arsenal pack, and to ease you into what's going to be up for you in it, they've put up some details on the said add-on, so you'd know what to expect.
It seems that there's going to be quite a lot for you here as they've so far posted only part 1 of their official update list. What we did get so far, though, are the following:
Mad Bomber (Perk) – Specialized training is now available for wastelanders with a talent for Repair and a love of Explosives.
Tin Grenade, Fat Mine – Two ends of the Mad Bomber spectrum, similar purposes: blowing things up.
Nuka-Grenade – This East Coast special has finally reached the shores of Lake Mead via some impressive and inventive Mad Bombers.
Optimized Small Energy Cell, Micro Fusion Cell, Electron Charge Pack, and
Flamer Fuel – Optimized Energy Weapon ammo: 30 percent more damage, superior armor penetration, and they even weigh less. The only drawback is a slight increase in weapon degradation. Requires Vigilant Recycler.
GRA Laser Pistol, Plasma Pistol – We’ve worked on some distribution deals for customizable low-end Energy Weapons. Don’t let the “low-end” designation fool you.
Cleansing Flame, MF Hyperbreeder Alpha – Two more one-of-a-kind (until we hear otherwise) Energy Weapons for clients who are interested in those things.
Sprtel-Wood 9700, The Smitty Special – We’ve got a line on two ultra-high-end unique models for our more well-to-do clients.
That's a lot of awesome weaponry, isn't it? I guess then that the US$ 3.99/ 320MS Points you'll have to shell out for it is definitely worth every buck. You can pick up the Gun Runners' Arsenal DLC on the PC, PS3, Steam and Xbox 360 come September 27th. For more of the details on the DLC, it's best you go to Bethesda's official site to see everything completely for yourself.
