Game cloning strikes again in Apple’s iTunes Store.
It goes without saying that the great majority of games on the iTunes Store are rip-offs of games that came before them. Even those titles that aren’t blatant copies (Zynga!) borrow mechanics from older games that the mobile populace may never have heard of. However, there’s a very thin line between copying mechanics and outright plagiarism, especially when the copying is done explicitly to scam customers.
Apple is normally on the lookout for stuff like this, but they seem to have dropped the ball when it comes to Pokemon Yellow, a game released on the iTunes Store on February 17. The game, featuring artwork from the Pokémon series and claiming to be “just like the original,” is nothing more than a sneaky cash grab by an unscrupulous game developer.
The app apparently does nothing more than open and crash, and certainly doesn’t contain anything remotely close to the original Pokémon Yellow for the Game Boy. The app developer has even gone so far as to generate fake reviews for the game, one of which claims, “Just like the original. Only better because you can play it on the most intuitive device ever - the iPhone!”
It’s all bullshit folks, so save your $0.99. Now that gaming news sites have caught a whiff of the fraud, it’s only a matter of time before Apple pulls the app.
Still, one has to wonder how the thing got through in the first place.

A group of BF3 cheaters has a bone to pick with Punkbuster, and they’re doing it at the expense of regular joes.
The beating heart of Battlefield 3 is its intense online multiplayer. And whenever you have online multiplayer in a game, you have to find a way to protect it from cheaters. On PC versions of the game, this function is performed by software known as Punkbuster.
Punkbuster is an automated program that analyzes every player on a particular server and looks for known cheats and other exploits. If it catches someone in the act, they are immediately banned from EA’s Battlelog service. According to Kotaku, some of these cheaters are unhappy with the way Punkbuster affects their game, and have elected to take their frustrations out on the regular BF3 populace.
It seems that somehow, these players have managed to compromise Punkbuster on certain servers, and are using the service to ban innocent players. The group claims to have dumped over 150 players to date, and the official BF3 forums are awash in complaints of unwarranted bans. Essentially, this small selection of players has chosen to protest Punkbuster by using it against non-cheating individuals.
Posting to a bots and exploits forum, one user had this to say about Punkbuster:
“We are bringing back the unerring of punkbuster back for a 3rd season. We have selected ggc-stream as the target since they have the most streaming bf3 servers and makes it very easy to add fake bans. In 2011 we hit them with a mass ban wave and now were are banning real players from battlelog while ggc-stream is totally unaware. We have framed 150+ bf3 players alone.”
This story is still developing, and there’s been no official word from either DICE or Punkbuster on what may be going on, so the news should be taken with a grain of salt. Look for future updates as information is made available.
What do you think of Punkbuster?

Reports of game.co.uk being compromised appear to have been greatly exaggerated.
Early this morning, Softpedia posted an update alerting gamers to the fact that the Game Group website, located at game.co.uk, appeared to have been compromised. The report stemmed from a Pastebin post, which purportedly contained the email addresses and passwords of over 200 Game Group users. Site visitors were warned to change their passwords to be safe.
Game Group has responded to the alleged security breach by claiming that the information in question didn’t come from their website, and that none of the posted email addresses are those of their users. They went on to say that they (duh) take security very seriously, and that after looking into the Pastebin post, they can confidently claim that no user information has been compromised.
The company assured customers that their personal and payment information was safe, and invited anyone with questions to contact their customer service department. So, it looks like your Game Group information may be secure after all. However, you may want to change your password just in case – this wouldn’t be the first time a company has denied a very real security breach.
Do you think the hack is fake, or is it more likely that the company is trying to cover its tracks?

Pete Hines, VP of PR for Bethesda, may have stirred up a bit more than he expected with recent Twitter comments.
So Skyrim came out last Friday, and the game has been a resounding success, minus a few bugs. Pete Hines, responding to a wave of Twitter complaints that I don’t even want to imagine, recently told gamers that Bethesda is working on the bugs and that everyone should “calm down.”
Well, it looks like one gamer took that attitude and ran with it, creating a fake Twitter account with all the same info as Mr. Hines, but swapping two letters in the name. And the result is absolutely hilarious.
I’ve collected some of my favorites in this post, but you really should read through the account to understand the sheer scope of this insanity. The guy seems like a real jerk, but I can’t help but giggle at some of his responses.
Honest gamer comment:
“I know bugs are important, but the CTD issue and the random FPS drops plus the other game stopping problems should be #1!”
Fake Pete Hines response:
“Stop telling us what to do. You should be thanking us for even making games in the first place.”
Honest gamer comment:
“I remember when Ninroot was rare<3 #Skyrim”
Fake Pete Hines response:
“I remember when the people who bought our games weren't so ugly. Go buy a paper bag and live in it.”
And one more fake Pete Hines:
Skyrim plays perfectly fine on high end PC's. Those experiencing issues should consider not being poor.
I’m not sure if Bethesda has any legal recourse in this matter, but for the time being it’s certainly a hilarious way to kill some time.

One of Sony’s biggest franchises might be heading your way next fall.
Sony Santa Monica announced they’d be giving the God of War series a rest after they finished development on God of War III, but rumors and fake game trailers for a fourth installment have been rampant ever since. It’s been about a year and a half since we last entered Kratos’s world; seems like more than enough time to get the creative juices flowing again. While there are still no official announcements regarding the game beyond what we already know, one New Zealand retailer seems to know something we don’t.
Mighty Ape, an online games vendor based out of the Kiwi nation, currently has the game listed for Pre-order. The date noted on the site is September 28th, 2012 – less than a year from now. Naturally, there’s no official confirmation of this date and it goes against series tradition, with God of War titles usually dropping in March, but it’s still something to note.
We’ll just have to wait and see what Sony studios have to say about this rumored release – it’s not uncommon for retailers to jump the gun on release dates, and September could very well be the month of GoW. It’s been an interesting year of job postings, developer resume leaks and other tidbits, but this is the closest we’ve come to a concrete date since God of War III.
Are you ready for another God of War?

The games giant talks about a special mode found in the latest title in the Resident Evil series, and why gamers will want to play it.
Resident Evil: Revelations is an important title for the Nintendo 3DS. It’s one of the few top-notch games that are headed to the device that aren’t also proprietary brands or based entirely on taking care of fake animals, so Capcom and Nintendo both need to get it right. Though the 3DS has been seeing better sales as of late, strong software choices will help to keep this improvement going.
Resident Evil: Revelations is very much a Resident Evil game, with zombies, monsters and a variety of survival horror traditions, but Capcom is also looking to make the game a little more flexible. They’ve officially announced what they’re calling “Raid Mode,” which is a special game mode in which one or two players are given a set of missions and objectives and graded on completion. The points earned in Raid mode are then used for weapon and character upgrades.
It sort of sounds like the Spec Ops mode in Modern Warfare 2 (and maybe Black Op? I didn’t play that one), where there are short, targeted missions with specific time and points goals.
Here’s what assistant producer had to say about it:
"The story mode in the game is something we created with the single-player experience in mind. I would like everyone to play the game in their bedroom with the lights off and headphones on. That's the way to experience the mode.
At the same time, these games we create, we know they're really enjoyable when you're able to share some of that experience with a friend. Multiplayer is very important and that communication is something that resonates with everyone. We felt putting Raid Mode in, in this kind of structure, allowed us to do that for this game as well.”
Raid mode will function via Wi-Fi and the web and borrows levels from the solo campaign, but we’ll just have to see if it’s a viable multiplayer experience. I think the hard part would likely be finding someone else with a 3DS.
How do you feel about multiplayer in Resident Evil? It’s worked okay in the past, but is it right for the 3DS?

The cute and cuddly Guardian Cub gives World of Warcraft players a somewhat safe method for turning real dollars into digital gold, but may not be the gold-farmer takedown many are imagining.
For years, World of Warcraft players interested in skipping nasty grinds or boring resource farming turned to the billion-dollar black market that is digital currency sales. For just a few of your hard-earned real life dollars, you could buy a nice pile of gold to use for item upgrades, rare recipes and, most commonly, your epic flying skill.
What many gold buyers didn’t realize is that the gold they purchased didn’t necessarily come from farmers, but game from the hacked accounts of their fellow gamers. Gold buying is the leading cause of account theft in WoW, as gold sellers strip as many accounts as they can to keep up with demand. Now, Blizzard seems to have made it easier and safer for you to use your actual money to buy fake money, via the in-game Guardian Cub pet.
Here’s how it works – you, the player, want to earn some extra gold. You purchase a couple of these Guardian Cubs for $10, then you put them up on the auction house. While you can’t sell the pet immediately, it is bind-on-equip and once the initial cooldown expires you are free to trade it however you see fit. A player with gold to burn then purchases the pet, giving you in-game money for your real-life purchase.
Blizzard even confirmed this as a possible use:
“While our goal is to offer players alternative ways to add a Pet Store pet to their collection, we’re ok with it if some players choose to use the Guardian Cub as a safe and secure way to try to acquire a little extra in-game gold without turning to third-party gold-selling services.”
It’s an interesting strategy, and one that has worked well in EVE (where players sell game time for currency). However, it’s worth noting that the auction house is a buyer’s market – if a large number of players are trying to make gold by selling Guardian Cubs, the eventual price drop may still make Chinese gold farming operations a more lucrative investment for your character.
We’lll just have to wait and see how this impacts the economy and gold buying market. What do you think of this new method for earning World of Warcraft gold?

Remember that Resident Evil 6 teaser that supposedly came out of Capcom's TGS 2011 presentation? Yeah, that one which showed numbers at the end, which appears to be coordinates to some secret location.
Well, apparently, it's not the real thing. And no, I don't just mean the coordinates. I mean the whole video. Apparently, a Capcom Japan representative "confirmed" the veracity of the video. However later on, a Capcom US representative denied such video as being legitimate.
Rich George of IGN then backed htat up over at Twitter, saying that the "Resident Evil 6 teaser is fake. This comes from multiple contacts at Capcom".
I guess that just about settles it. There's no such Resident Evil 6 reveal. At least not yet. We wouldn't be surprised if this comes out again much later as "official", though. Nobody likes leaks, especially not publishers who are just planning out how to best make their reveal.
We do know that Capcom has big plans for the next iteration of the franchise, seeing as how they've already characterized it as being 'ambitious'. As to what extent this ambitiousness is, we're just going to have to wait until they show us something real.
