Professor Layton and the Last Specter’s Hidden RPG

A new Professor Layton game hits shelves today, but did you know that The Last Specter contains a completely separate RPG?

The Professor Layton series stands out as one of the best sets of puzzle games in recent memory. While it can occasionally frustrating or confusing, for the most part the Layton franchise delivers on its promise to give gamers a bunch of interesting puzzles to solve while loosely tying those puzzles into some sort of narrative. It isn’t perfect, but it works on a fundamental level.

Professor Layton and the Last Specter, the latest in the Layton franchise, hits shelves today. Nintendo DS owners can pick the game up for the regular DS game price of $29.99, but may not know that they’re actually getting two games for the price. The first game is a traditional Layton adventure, solving puzzles and figuring out a mystery. The second though, is much more interesting.

The second game, titled “Professor Layton’s London Life,” allows you to customize your character, explore the city of London, take on assignments and look for clues as you work to determine the origins of a mysterious fairy. This mini-RPG isn’t related to the main story of Last Specter, but apparently offers over 100 hours of gameplay – that’s like Skyrim territory right there. The game is accessible at any time and boasts a top-down view of London that you can explore to your heart’s content. Unless, of course, you actually live in the U.K. – London Life is not included in the U.K. version of the game.

Of course, the question remains whether it will be 100 interesting hours of RPG, or 100 hours of scratching your head as you try to solve a few hundred unrelated puzzles. Either way, this extra feature certainly expands on the Layton legacy and gives fans a little more content to enjoy while they wait for the next title in the series, The Mask of Miracle, to hit the 3DS sometime in the next few months.
