One of the most beloved PC games of all time is heading to the Nintendo 3DS.
Did you live through the 8-bit revolution? Were you one of the first “computer” gamers? If so, you probably remember Cyan’s incredible CD-ROM title, Myst. The game, which featured an explorable, pre-rendered world packed with puzzles and mystery, was an instant hit – pretty much everyone had a copy of the game at one point or another.
Myst is now poised to make a triumphant return, in the form of a port to the Nintendo 3DS. The new game, titled Myst 3D (duh), will feature all of the content found in the original game, as well as the RIME Age extras added to the game in its 2000 re-release. The port will stay true to the game’s roots, with the only major changes being its adaptation to 3D.
Myst 3D is slated for March 27, 2012. Do you think the game will work well for the 3DS, or is Myst a game that belongs on PCs? Solving some of the puzzles on the 3DS screen doesn’t exactly sound appealing to me.

Well, Skyrim is finally out after what seems like an eternity of waiting. So does it live up to the hype, or is it just another victim of its own expectations?
Although Skyrim won’t be the largest launch of the year in terms of sales, it’s still among the most highly anticipated. Gamers around the world called in sick today to jump into the world of Skyrim, slay some dragons, and make absolutely no progress in what is an essentially infinite game. Since the review embargo has been lifted, we’re starting to hear more and more about the game that has for so long been on the tip of everyone’s tongue. So how did it turn out?
Well, in short, great. The game is sitting comfortably at a 96 on Metacritic, barely edging out Skyward Sword for the top spot in new releases. I’ve read through some of the Skyrim reviews and I think I can give you a general idea of what everyone is saying, just in case you’re on the fence about buying the game.
Pros: Reviewers are praising the game’s open world and freedom of exploration. I’ve also seen plenty of compliments for the radiant questing system that ensure you always have something to do, and PC reviews note that the graphics of this game put older Elder Scrolls games to shame. Some reviewers praise the plot and character development, but this is by no means consistent. I’m seeing the word “ever” thrown around a lot, as in “the most liberating RPG ever,” or “most open world ever,” so take that how you will.
Cons: The game, typical to Bethesda form, is packed with bugs. Nothing major, but little glitches like floating mobs, weird collision detection and, my favorite bug of all, a character’s inability to realize there is a cooking pot on their head. These will probably be ironed out over time. Some reviewers have noted that the animation, while improved from Oblivion, is still fairly stilted – third person play isn’t really that improved. The clunky combat system is also listed as a minor problem, but if you like the Elder Scrolls series or Fallout 3 you’ll feel right at home.
So that’s the basic overview. Naturally, Skyrim is a massive experience that can’t be summed up in a review. It certainly looks like a good buy, assuming you’re into that sort of game.
Did you get Skyrim today? How’s it working out?

mfskyrimday1Well, Skyrim is finally out after what seems like an eternity of waiting. So does it live up to the hype, or is it just another victim of its own expectations?

The Farmville and Empires and Allies creator has plenty of titles planned for the future, some of which may exist completely independent of Facebook.
Zynga’s story is one of legend – a small indie company builds simple but addictive game and in the process becomes a game development juggernaut. Zynga’s influence on the world of social gaming is so large that it actually forced Facebook to back down on its implementation of Facebook credits – no small feat considering the massive power Facebook wields to crush or promote new games.
Zynga has shown no signs of slowing down since setting up shop in 2007, with 2010’s CityVille recently surpassing FarmVille as its most popular and most played game. In a press conference held last week, Zynga announced a number of new titles and plans to perhaps start a gradual shift away from Facebook and towards independence.
Here’s a quick rundown on the games they talked about, though they noted they have at least 10 new IPs in development:
CastleVille
In  CastleVille you’ll play the leader of a small territory and will work with its inhabitants to grow crops, obtain land and defend your sovereignty. Details are scant, but it’s safe to assume there will be significant opportunities to grief your friend’s kingdoms.
Hidden Chronicles
Hidden Chronicles is a departure from the traditional Zynga game model, relying on static pictures that the player has to investigate. Players investigate a place called Ramsey Manor, and the game sounds quite a bit like the exploration phases of the Professor Layton series.
Zynga Bingo
Zynga Bingo is basically Bingo, but benefits from integration with other Zynga Casino titles. So if you’re winning chips in one game, you can transfer them to Zynga Bingo as you see fit.
Zynga also announced a couple of interesting things that indicate their pushing away from Facebook including HTML-5 support for mobile gaming and something called a zTag, which was described as a space for gamers to connect with one another.
How do you feel about the future of social gaming? Is there room for innovative titles or are they all silly distractions?

Batman’s newest adventure is earning high marks from pretty much everyone that touches it. We’ve got a quick breakdown of what people are saying.
We’re less than a week away from entering Arkham one more time and dealing with the many terrors it contains. The last Batman game we saw earned waves of critical praise and was hailed by some as the best superhero game every made. The only question now is, can the game’s sequel meet the standard set by its predecessor while living up to the insane hype?
So far, it looks like the answer to that question is a resounding “Yes.” Here’s a quick run of what some of the major reviewers are saying about the title:
GameSpot – 9.0
They praise the game’s open environment, level design, slick controls and clean presentation. I believe I heard the word “exhilarating” in their video review, so take that for what you will. Puzzles are noted as tricky but rewarding, but the final confrontation is named anti-climactic.
GameTrailers – 9.4
Side missions are noted as a highlight of the game, though they do note that the game sometimes sends you in circles. The environment is also acclaimed here, as are the context controls that make the Arkham series so interesting. There is a brief lament over Batman’s inability to grapple through barbed wire, but overall the exploration aspects of the game earn high marks.
Joystiq – 4.5 Stars
Cleaner controls, a more interesting environment and a variety of interesting things to do are the primary focuses here, with the site glumly noting that the central narrative never quite lives up to everything else. They do note the game as an improvement, albeit slight, over the original Arkham game. They too, make mention of a lame final encounter.
GamePro – 5 Stars
GamePro’s reviewer calls Arkham City the best superhero game he’s ever played. Unlike other reviews, GamePro was impressed with the storyline and only took issue with the limited complexity of boss encounters. They also note that the optional Catwoman adventure option, available only to players that purchase the game new, could be a problem for those that like to pick up used titles.
So there you have it. When you look at the reviews in aggregate, it looks like Arkham City is an excellent use of your hard-earned money. And, like I’ve mentioned previously, if you pre-order the title through Wal-Mart, they’ll throw in a $10 gift card and a copy of the original Arkham Asylum to boot.
Are you ready to put on the cape one more time?

A deluge of news, reviews, gameplay videos and other Rage-related content storm the gaming press as the game hits store shelves in North America.
There are roughly ten new “things” coming out today, if you count games and various downloadable content packs. “Dark Souls,” a new “Spider-Man” title, “NBA 2K12” and “Orcs Must Die” are all making their debuts, but you surely wouldn’t know it if you followed the traditional gaming press. Looking over my Twitter feed (follow me! @mikedotfoster), it looks like the games media has settled in on their big title of the week: “Rage.”
So, to save you some time wading through the pile of words that have already been written on the subject, I figured I’d let you know what people seem to be feeling in regard to what is apparently the biggest title of the week. Here goes nothing!
PC Gamer calls the game “simple, satisfying” fun, praises the enemy A.I. and says that while the game is still very linear, the smooth controls and exciting action make it interesting all the way through. They rated it an 84 out of 100.
IGN says that “Rage” is one of the best-looking games ever made, boasts “excellent shooting sequences” and speaks positively on the single-player campaign as well as cooperative missions. Staying true to form, they give the game 8.5 out of 10.
Game Trailers calls the cinema writing “rote,” criticizes the lack of an overarching plot to guide the player and notes the anti-climactic ending, but looks positively on the well-realized characters. Gameplay and graphics win the day, earning the title 9 out of 10.
GamePro is exuberant about the vehicle sequences in the game but notes hit detection and graphics problems on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. They also note an anti-climactic finish but say that the smart A.I and vivid environments more than make up for story problems and minor bugs. Four stars.
If you’re keeping track, it looks like “Rage” is a fun, well-designed experience with great graphics but not much of a story. Most reviewers also noted that while the game is billed as an RPG, there isn’t much in the way of open-world exploration and true RPG fans may find the game limiting. Regardless, “Rage” is certainly sounding like a strong buy, with minor issues that will likely be patched up later.
Did you pick up “Rage” today? How are you enjoying it so far?

Recoil Games has now released Rochard on the PSN. What is Rochard, you ask? It's the newest space adventure to land on your PS3 consoles, bringing you something akin (so they say) to Shadow Complex, with a dash of Half-Life 2 gravity. A pretty tall order, yes?
What better way to let you see for yourself what this game has to offer than to press play on that launch trailer below, which they've sent out as well?
The game, as you can see, is a side-scrolling puzzle title, which puts you in the shoes of astro-miner John Rochard. You must help him make his way through gravity, solving puzzles, taking out the bad guys, and of course, going up against the baddest evil bosses around.
Creative Director Burt Kane said of Rochard, "The hero, John Rochard, is no marine or super soldier, but just a tough, ordinary miner with a mustach, placed in an extraordinary situation. The combination of its humorous style, explorative space antics and the player's ability to manipulate gravity will really make Rochard stand out."
If you liked the video enough, you might as well pick it up from the PSN, too.

Game developer Jonathan Blow has some interesting things to say about porting his island puzzle game to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, mostly that he’s not going to do it.
Jonathan Blow’s last project, “Braid,” was a commercial and critical success that skewed the way gamers approached puzzles by incorporating the control of time. His next project, “The Witness,” boasts a two million dollar budget and is currently described as “an exploration puzzle game on an uninhabited island.” As you may imagine, the game features lush environments and a host of different puzzles, but that’s about as much as anyone can figure out at this point. Think “Myst,” only hopefully not as boring.
Unfortunately for console gamers, Blow and his team have no intention of porting “The Witness” to either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. When  asked about the possibility of a port in an interview with Edge, Blow had this to say about the current state of console development:
“We like 360 and PS3, but their specifications are over five years old now, and that's a lot in computer years. The kind of tricks we'd have to perform to get this game working on those platforms are such a lot of work that to port it over at this point is just not worth it for us.”
Console gamers shouldn’t panic quite yet; if you don’t have a gaming PC but want to jump in on what effectively looks like a better version of “Lost: The Game,” you may be able to pick the title up on your iPad in a couple of years.  Says Blow:
“By the time this game comes out in a year or more, we might be on an iPad 4. We do have to compress the game for that platform, but we don't have to do the certification stuff we would have to on consoles, so we can live with doing just one of those giant tasks. And I like this as an iPad game. It's a natural thing.”
“Braid” was a massive hit thanks to a direct-download system that in large part relied on console gamers. Is Jonathan Blow shooting himself in the foot by leaving them out of the loop this time around?

He said that because it was removed, it yielded "misguided impressions", such that it was on rails, because the demo did not show any open-world exploration elements.
"I'll just state on record now that Fable: The Journey is definitely not on rails," stressed Peter Molyneux. It would be better if we hear the explanation from him. Fable: The Journey is coming out for the Xbox 360 sometime in 2012.
