Nintendo takes another step into the present with its own digital delivery service.
The Nintendo investor briefing held early this morning in Japan was chock full of good news for the company. In addition to predicting that the 3DS will finally hit profitability in 2012 and announcing an all-new Super Mario side-scroller, the company had quite the bombshell to drop – a digital delivery service called the Nintendo Network.
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo president, offer up a few details on what gamers can expect from the new service. Expect the Communities system to return, which allows people who aren’t on each other’s friends lists to play together. There’s also full support for DLC, a feature on which Nintendo has been way behind the curve. You’ll also find a wide range of downloadable games, similar to the Nintendo eShop but more robust in both lineup and functionality.
All in all, it looks like Nintendo has finally realized that if it wants to stay competitive in the next console generation, it has to dramatically up its online game. The Wii’s online capabilities were decent, but friend codes and other unnecessary complexities dragged it down. Here’s hoping the new Nintendo Network will alleviate some of those problems and make the Wii U a more online-ready machine.

Today (the 15th) is the last day for Star Wars Galaxies – are you ready to move on?
Star Wars Galaxies has had a pretty tough path through the world of MMOs. Launched with about as much hype as any game could have, the title quickly fell victim to forced complexity, ridiculous imbalances, and a Jedi path that couldn’t be deciphered by a CIA code breaker. Things only got worse from there, with each patch or fix applied by SOE landing more player complaints and fewer paying customers.
However, there is a small core of gamers out there that loved Galaxies and the new twist it brought to the world of MMOs, and those gamers are unfortunately losing a big part of their pastime tonight. With The Old Republic essentially on shelves early and millions of players heading in its direction, keeping Galaxies online just isn’t a profitable venture.
If you love Galaxies and are sad to see it go, there are some cool things going on around the web. You can log in and say goodbye to your old friends and favorite locations, or jump in on the Massively livestream tonight as they broadcast the last hour of the game.
Galaxies taught us quite a bit about what an MMO can and can’t be, and will be missed (even as the butt of jokes). Seeing an MMO shut down is somewhat sad – you invest so much time into your items, characters and achievements and then they all vanish into the night. Bummer. So, thanks for everything, Galaxies.
Did you say goodbye to Star Wars Galaxies? Or did you never say hello?

Ó

Let’s talk about some of the things Bethesda could add to Skyrim without breaking the game.
Howdy QJ readers! We’re trying something a little bit different today, with a PoV in the form of a video. I’ve been playing Skyrim for around 30-40 hours and while there is lots to love about the title, there are a few things that seem like they could be improved. This video certainly isn’t a complain-fest, as I think the game stands on its own as is, but just a couple of thoughts on things I’d love to see implemented.
Here’s my Skyrim wish list, in video form:
I wanted to keep the video short, but there are a few other things I would love to see modified in the world of Skyrim. Here they are, in no specific order:
Follower Damage
I appreciate the fact that my loyal follower charges into battle with me, but is it really necessary for them to be vulnerable to my attacks? Combat in Skyrim is sloppy enough – I’ve killed my follower several times despite having my axe lined up directly with an enemy. I understand that killing your follower needs to be possible for the sake of freedom, but in combat it can turn into a real mess. There’s nothing more annoying than completing a tough fight only to accidentally shout your follower to death.
Vendor Selling
Having numerous vendors that only sell one or two types of things is a Bethesda trademark, but it starts to get annoying pretty early in the game. Here’s a quick sample of how my post-dungeon trips go now: Fast-travel to Whiterun, sell weapons and armor to the blacksmith until she runs out of money. Go inside the shop (loading screen), sell to the guy until he runs out of money. Go outside (loading screen), run to the general store. Go inside (loading screen), sell to that guy until he runs out of money. Go outside (loading screen), fast-travel to Markarth (loading screen), repeat. It’s a little much.
Horse Improvements
In addition to the horse problem I mentioned in the video, horses could use a big buff. What’s the point of spending 1,000g on a horse if it runs at the same speed you do? And the bonus carrying capacity is a joke – who is slowly walking all the way out of a dungeon to find their horse? Speaking of which – can we get a horse whistle or something? I can’t count how many times that horse has run off during a fight and I’ve just had to charge on without him after ten minutes of trying to figure out where he went.
Those are my rough complaints/suggestions. I feel like each one could be addressed with a relatively simple in-game fix, but I’m not a developer so I could be dramatically underestimating the complexity.
Do you have any features you’d like to see added to Skyrim? Let us know in the comments.

New screenshots and a bit more information from the developers give gamers an idea of what to expect from the level creator and its Steam Cloud support.
If you’ve ever tried to use the Portal 2 authoring tools that were released soon after the game, you’ve probably noticed that they have a pretty steep learning curve. While some gamers probably picked it up and figured it out, others, like myself, were immediately turned off by the complexity and decided to spend time doing something else. The new level creator, which will be part of Portal 2’s next free DLC pack, hopes to change all that and make level authoring something anyone can do.
Instead of working with a program that feels like software for level design professionals, Portal 2’s level creator will work much more like the Forge function found in recent Halo titles. Users will be able to drag and drop items into the environment and the whole thing is engineered to be as intuitive as possible. Players will also be able to upload their creations to the Steam Cloud, making them instantly available to anyone that wants to give them a try.
Here’s what Valve has to say on the official Portal 2 website:
“The simplified puzzle creator will let players easily carve out their creations in a straightforward but powerful way. They'll then be able to immediately upload those levels to their Steam Cloud and share them with other players online. We're also building a community site to host all of these player-created puzzles. The site will allow players to quickly find new puzzles and add them to their game, ready to play, with a single click. Players will then be able to rate the puzzles they've played, leave comments for puzzle creators, and follow creators they like.”
Sounds good to me. I’ve always loved Forge and if Valve can create a similar experience for Portal 2 fans, you can bet I’ll be involved.
Are you excited to build your own Portal test chambers?

Batman’s newest adventure is earning high marks from pretty much everyone that touches it. We’ve got a quick breakdown of what people are saying.
We’re less than a week away from entering Arkham one more time and dealing with the many terrors it contains. The last Batman game we saw earned waves of critical praise and was hailed by some as the best superhero game every made. The only question now is, can the game’s sequel meet the standard set by its predecessor while living up to the insane hype?
So far, it looks like the answer to that question is a resounding “Yes.” Here’s a quick run of what some of the major reviewers are saying about the title:
GameSpot – 9.0
They praise the game’s open environment, level design, slick controls and clean presentation. I believe I heard the word “exhilarating” in their video review, so take that for what you will. Puzzles are noted as tricky but rewarding, but the final confrontation is named anti-climactic.
GameTrailers – 9.4
Side missions are noted as a highlight of the game, though they do note that the game sometimes sends you in circles. The environment is also acclaimed here, as are the context controls that make the Arkham series so interesting. There is a brief lament over Batman’s inability to grapple through barbed wire, but overall the exploration aspects of the game earn high marks.
Joystiq – 4.5 Stars
Cleaner controls, a more interesting environment and a variety of interesting things to do are the primary focuses here, with the site glumly noting that the central narrative never quite lives up to everything else. They do note the game as an improvement, albeit slight, over the original Arkham game. They too, make mention of a lame final encounter.
GamePro – 5 Stars
GamePro’s reviewer calls Arkham City the best superhero game he’s ever played. Unlike other reviews, GamePro was impressed with the storyline and only took issue with the limited complexity of boss encounters. They also note that the optional Catwoman adventure option, available only to players that purchase the game new, could be a problem for those that like to pick up used titles.
So there you have it. When you look at the reviews in aggregate, it looks like Arkham City is an excellent use of your hard-earned money. And, like I’ve mentioned previously, if you pre-order the title through Wal-Mart, they’ll throw in a $10 gift card and a copy of the original Arkham Asylum to boot.
Are you ready to put on the cape one more time?

Randy Pitchford is selling Aliens: Colonial Marines to the hilt, even comparing it to the blockbuster zombie game of Valve, Left 4 Dead, saying that their game is definitely "more crafted" than that one.
Said Pitchford, "I think parts of it feel a little like [that], but Left 4 Dead was very dependent upon the game system. There wasn't any real story telling or character development or anything at all to do in Left 4 Dead other than to run to the exit and not die along the way.
Aliens: Colonial Marines is a much more crafted and cinematic experience. It also has a deeper meta-game where there is some value to gaining experience and growing the capability of your character overtime. Left 4 Dead is a great thing to think about when considering how it works as both a single player and co-operative game where you're playing against hordes of fearless, death-dealing enemies. But it's not really a good example when you think about a crafted, narrative experience or when you think about how meta-growth game can make playing your favourite missions again really fun and compelling."
In defense of Left 4 Dead (I am a huge fan, obviously), I don't think it ever promised a meta-experience of gaming. As far as its basic plot is concerned, I think it delivered on what it set out to do: put you in the position of someone out to survive at all costs. And really, when you have a horde of zombies after you, you don't have much time to philosophize about character growth. You just shoot away. It's the basic tenet of survival, and one that L4D unfrivolously delivers.
But anyway, if Aliens: Colonial Marines is "more crafty", then it should be a fun game to look out for.
The game is also promising to answer questions about the movie, so if you're looking forward to that, then it really should be a must-buy/ must-play title. Gearbox also takes much pride in the fact that they've provided gamers with a lot of freedom in the game.

A new patch has been released for Mortal Kombat by NetherRealm Studios, bringing in some more tweaks and fixes to further improve your gaming experience.
The patch didn't release simultaneously on both consoles, however, with the Xbox 360 getting it first. PS3 owners will have to wait a bit later, specifically a few more days.
The update also included a lot of changes for the characters, which definitely gives a boost to those who are not as competitive to begin with. In the meantime, here are the gameplay fixes and tweaks now available on Mortal Kombat's latest update:
General Gameplay Fixes/Tweaks
Fixed a couple of crash scenarios.
DLC billboards should now behave correctly on Xbox
You should no longer see online desyncs on Xbox that are related to alternate costumes or classic costume DLC packs.
MOTD handling and displaying code was tweaked.
Fixed a bug that could have resulted in tweakvars getting corrupted.
Fixed a crash in player select if you tried to exit out while the dlc box was open.
With the exception of Human Cyrax and Human Sektor, everyone’s alternate costumes should behave the same as their primary costumes and have the exact same move properties.
You can now block after a dash forward is completed if it was cancelled into from a special move. You canceling out of a dash into another dash was normalized for most of the characters. Dash Block canceling remains the same.
Wakeup attacks should have better invulnerability on them if done in the first 4 frames of the wakeup window. (this was added as a hotfix tweakable value)
You no longer get a completely free throw attempt after someone blocks your jump punch. The opponent has less block hit frames but chained combos from a jump punch will remain the same.
There were several reactions that could freeze players just before they landed from attacks and reactions such as Kano’s Airball and Cyrax’s Net air reaction.
Made many minor hitbox adjustments.
Tweaked the negative edge window.
Several low attacks were being parried incorrectly.
Nightwolf and Kenshi can no longer still absorb a projectile if they get hit out of their enhanced reflects before the recovery frames start.
The Mortal Kombat continues to expand its reach, but despite fans' clamor, a Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat title is "easier said than done", this according to Capcom's big boss himself, Yoshinori Ono.
