soywiz-pspemu_iconThe PSP was made for gaming on the go. There's no doubt that it can fit under the definition of handheld gaming on both the gaming and homebrew fronts. What happens when you want to achieve the opposite of that? Soywiz addresses that with the development of a PSP emulator for Windows PCs.

Surprise! Sony screwed everyone. Again.
Sometime last year, when PS Vita hype was at max and the system had yet to fall embarrassingly on its face in Japan, Sony revealed the UMD Passport system. The service essentially provided a way for PSP gamers to bring the UMD games they owned directly to the Vita once they upgraded to the new system.
Now that Vita is freely available here in the States, some users have noticed that the Passport service has somehow vanished into thin air. While it was available with Japanese Vitas, it doesn’t appear to have made the jump over the Pacific. Sony apparently forgot to tell everyone in the United States (and in Europe) until the device’s launch day.
Citing a lack of demand for PSP games and the very “reasonable” prices of UMD games on the PSN store, Sony exec Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that the company had no plans to make Passport available either in the U.S. or in Europe. He noted that Sony doesn’t see much value in bringing the Passport system to the U.S., since PSP games are so affordable here.
Did you get that? Sony says that games are so cheap on PSN, there’s no reason you shouldn’t buy them twice.
Honestly, is anyone surprised by this news?

Hardcore shooters like Quake and Unreal Tournament don’t translate well when ported to consoles.
If you played first-person shooters on your PC in the 90s, you probably remember the hectic, chaotic gameplay they usually featured. In the old days, the only thing that dictated your ability to succeed in a PC shooter was the speed of your wrist. However, twitchy shooters seem to have faded out, replaced by the cover-laden frag fests to which we have all become accustomed.
Tribes Ascend executive producer Todd Harris says the problem isn’t with developers or the evolving tastes of gamers, but with creating multiplatform games. He claims that since shooters have to be simultaneously released on PC and console platforms, it’s much harder for developers to build a quick reflex, twitchy title.
He noted that console controllers dramatically limit the speed at which action can take place, since sensitivity can only go so high before the game becomes impossible to play. He also claimed that developers probably could make a twitchy game for consoles, but it’s easier to aim for the “lowest common denominator” and make tactical shooters instead of the twitchy kind.
Tribes Ascend is currently in closed beta, but will hit digital shelves sometime this spring. Expect the game to demand twitchy, reflexive gameplay—just like the shooters of old.
Unless, of course, it gets ported to PS3 or Xbox.

PS Vita will have fill support for Adobe Flash, if Sony has anything to say about it.
The brawl between Flash and mobile developers has flashed hot over the last few years, with Adobe recently announcing it would discontinue mobile development to focus on HTML-5 solutions instead. The announcement seemed like a victory for Apple, which for years has resisted bringing Flash applications to its phones and tablets. Flash is still a major part of most people’s web experience, and the software enables thousands of internet users to watch videos and engage interactive content.
Sony seems to disagree with Apple on the subject of Flash’s usefulness, and is currently in negotiations with Adobe to bring the service to the PlayStation Vita. On the one hand, it’s a savvy business move that ensures Vita owners will have access to as much online content as possible. On the other, Adobe’s recent shift in focus to HTML-5 hints that Sony’s push for Flash support may have only been savvy if executed five years ago.
Sony execs have confirmed that they’re still working with Adobe to try to find a solution that will work for both companies, but the tone of the interview doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Muneki Shimada, development head of Sony’s division two, indicated that negotiations are ongoing and Sony hasn’t “given up.” Something could be lost in translation here, but it certainly sounds like Sony is dealing with an intransigent group of Adobe developers reluctant to develop their software on another device.
Either way, the future of Flash on both the Vita and on mobile platforms is in doubt. If negotiations are successful, however, Vita would earn one more selling point to help put it ahead of its competitors.
Do you think Flash support is an important feature for a handheld gaming device?

Are "traditional handeld consoles" such as the PSP and the Nintendo DS in trouble with the steady growth of the smartphone and tablet gaming markets?
Remedy Entertainment's executive VP, Aki Järvilehto, seem to think so. In a recent interview with Industry Gamers, he said, "Right now you can buy tons and tons of fun on iOS with the price of a single handheld console game."
"Heck, you can get tons of fun for free with advertising based concepts. So I do think the traditional handheld consoles will need to reinvent themselves if they want to compete."
And I agree wholeheartedly, at least on the reinvention bit. It's not necessarily a complete overhaul that is demanded of them, I think. Rather, it's an adaptation to the changing demands of the consumers. I don't think, however, that handhelds are in any trouble with the smartphones and iOS markets.
They've got a pretty solid niche, and frankly, the gaming experience remains to be very different on the handhelds. While the new mobile digital market is making an impact in the gaming industry as a whole, I think it's far from a doomsday scenario such that the DS and PSP models will be eaten up alive by the smartphones or the iPads.
Besides, with the (upcoming) releases of the newer versions of the handhelds, there's definitely plenty more to offer on the consumer plate. All in all, that can only be a good thing. Competition among developers and manufacturers always benefits the consumers after all.
