EA is bringing America’s favorite dysfunctional family to your iOS device.
Simpsons games, as a rule, have been pretty hit-or-miss. The arcade game was an instant classic, but some of the side-scrollers that showed up on various consoles throughout the 90s were utter garbage. The franchise saw renewed game-related praise for 2003’s Hit and Run, but has been mostly dark since then.
Well, Simpsons fans, your long wait has come to an end: EA is prepping a brand new Simpsons iOS game, titled The Simpsons: Tapped Out. The game will utilize writers from the show, as well as all of the relevant voice talent. Tapped Out revolves around rebuilding Springfield after Homer accidentally destroys it in a nuclear explosion.
The game is slotted firmly in the free-to-play notch, with the initial download being free but microtransactions aplenty. You’ll be able to trade your real-life cash for in-game doughnuts, which I can only assume will be used to unlock new characters and gameplay elements. Simpsons games are always risky, but with the writers and actors onboard, this should at least turn out interesting for fans.
Look for Tapped Out to hit the iTunes Store sometime this spring. And for you Android users, watch for the game a few months after that. As usual.

Want to dodge super-long queue times for Bioware’s massively popular MMO? Watch out for these crowded servers.
It’s not uncommon for a new MMO to suffer from long queue times and crushing server loads, and a game with the sheer hype force of Star Wars: The Old Republic is likely going to be subject to more than average stress. Thanks to the incredible influx of new players since the game’s launch on December 20, Bioware has had to open up new servers and is slowly increasing population caps on some of the ones they already had in place.
They’ve also released a list of servers that are currently packed to capacity. They’re not blocking character creation because they want people to have the opportunity to play with friends, but they’re strongly advising against joining the following servers:
• The Harbinger -- US West Coast - PvE
• The Swiftsure -- US West Coast - PvP
• The Fatman -- US East Coast - PvP
• Bloodworthy -- EU English - PvP
• Frostclaw -- EU English - PvE
• Legions of Lettow -- EU English - PvP
• The Red Eclipse -- EU English - PvE
• Tomb of Freedom Nadd -- EU English - PvP
• Darth Revan's Mask -- EU German - PvP
• Darth Traya -- EU German - PvP
• Jar'Kai Sword -- EU German - PvP
• Hrakert Rift -- EU French - PvP
You’re still free to join one, of course – you’d just better be prepared for a ridiculous queue time. Things will naturally slow down once the holiday break ends and everyone’s hit a more regular play schedule, but for now, it may be best to stick with a less-crowded server unless you have a specific reason to join a crowded one.
What is your opinion of the way Bioware has been handling the SWTOR launch?

Infinity Ward is issuing perma-bans that aren’t exactly permanent, but might as well be.
Want to get banned from Modern Warfare 3 for the next 13 years? All you need to do is skirt the rules of the game by hacking, power leveling or performing some other stupid task, then get caught. Infinity Ward is issuing permanent bans to players caught breaking the rules, although the bans may not be as permanent as one might think.
While the message players receive indicates that the suspension is only temporary, the timeframe is pretty amazing – 5,000 days. That means, assuming the suspension isn’t extended, your account won’t come back online until 2024. By then, we’ll be up to Modern Warfare 25.
If you receive this message, it means you’re banned, not suspended. Apparently, Infinity Ward doesn’t have a mechanism in place for applying permanent bans, so they’ve gone with the next best thing – suspending your account until the game has long been made irrelevant.
Robert Bowling, creative strategist for the Modern Warfare brand, confirmed that if you see this message, you did something very, very stupid. So play by the rules, and avoid the perma-ban!

Take 2 Boss Criticizes Yearly Schedule Releases
With games like Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty being released every year, who has time for quality.
Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is a force to be reckoned with. A man who has helped push some of the most innovative and creatively awesome titles to the finish line over the years, but over those years has been time...effort...killing hookers, so when Zelnick says that the current model of yearly releases isn't sustainable, he knows what he's talking about.
Big budget Triple-A titles need time and effort put upon them, not just a new coat of paint, a first-draft script and some geographically confused accents. Zelnick was a speaker at the UBS Media and Communications conference and whilst Zelnick didn't specificially name any franchises he had however, just finished discussing Activision's stance in the market place.
Zelnick said that if "you start trying to stamp these products out annually, we don't think that's consistent with a high-quality result", essentially the current Call of Duty model, even with a subscription service, is not sustainable. Zelnick added that if you give consmers something every year like clockwork, they will eventually grow tired of it.
Whilst I would agree with Zelnick, MW3 did pull in over half a billion dollars in sales last month and I tend not to argue with creative figures that I will never ever ever ever ever ever see in my lifetime.
Figures have been coming out about how GameStop and a few other retailers have sold over half a million Premium Subscriptions to Call of Duty's subscription service, Elite and have continued to grow as such. Zelnick queried the viability of such a subscription service, saying he could't tell whether it was relevant yet. "I'm kind of skeptical, frankly. I suspect that we want a different experience on our big screen than we do on our middle-sized screen than we do on our mobile screen, because I think we use them at different times and they mean different things. I do think an intellectual property can thread through, but only if it is really high quality."
That being said users who signed up for Elite crashed the servers twice in the first week of release due to it's popularity and the unbelivable amount of support that Activision had not prepared for. Jamie Berger of Activision has acttually said that "right now, it's an option", when talking about Elite, but he also adds that it might not be in "3-5 years."
So both Activision and Zelnick are not thinking about keeping a community running in the long term; they should team up on something.

The lovable indie game shows up on one of gaming’s biggest platforms, with a few upgrades to boot.
Cave Story is a simple but innovated platformer created by independent game developer Daisuke Amaya. The game was initially released for free, but its massive success gave it the opportunity to pop up in a few different mediums. Versions popped up all over the gaming world, but the two most high profile ports are likely the 3DS version and the one that has just dropped to Steam.
This latest iteration of Cave Story, now downloadable on Steam for around $10 depending on your region, has a completely remastered soundtrack and a slightly overhauled graphics engine. Nothing so serious that you won’t recognize the game, but just enough to make it worth shelling out a few bucks in lieu of downloading the free version.
Cave Story has seen high praise for its sheer size, causing many reviewers to compare it to classic platformers such as Castlevania and Metroid. The game features fast-paced shooting in tight spaces, with tons and tons of enemies attacking from all sides. The whole thing looks pretty chaotic, and reminds me of some of the more intense side-scrolling shooters of the old days.
Here’s a link to the game’s entry on Steam, if you’re interested in giving it a try: Cave Story
Do you like seeing indie developers spread their products out and make some money, or should free games stay free?

EA brings back the long dormant, ridiculous football game, complete with an NFL license.
NFL Blitz was ridiculous. 30 yard downs, no penalties, super-long passes and the occasional flaming football. I liked the Blitz franchise so much that it completely ruined my ability to play any other football games, since apparently 60-yard passes aren’t what you’re supposed to try on every play in Madden.
Thankfully, people that are terrible at Madden have something to look forward to – a new NFL Blitz title.
EA recently announced that the game would be showing up on Xbox Live Arcade and PSN as a direct download title sometime in January (just in time for the Super Bowl!), and will maintain many of the identifying features fans used to love. NBA Jam announcer Tim Kitzrow is already on-board to call the play-by-play, and the game apparently includes a new mode featuring zombies and monsters. From all estimations, Blitz is aimed at becoming the ultimate throwback arcade football title.
Sounds like Blitz to me. This is just the most recent in a long line of old games made new – Duke Nukem, Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy Tactics – and it will be interesting to see how the nostalgia plays out. As we’ve seen in the last year or so, some games hold up well to our personal memories, while others fall horribly short and make us wish we had never trusted the developer in the first place.
Look for NFL Blitz on PSN and Xbox Live Arcade January 3.
Are you as excited as I am to play a new Blitz game, or do you feel like the series is too dated to be relevant? It does seem lazy to keep reviving old franchises; video games are becoming the new film industry.

Unfortunately, no level cap increase will be happening for Uncharted 3, contrary to reports last week indicating such.
Naughty Dog Community Moderator EvangM clarified the misunderstanding in their offical forums, saying thus:
"There was some communication and a blog post was authored which mentioned that there would be an increase in the level cap along with new maps.
The new maps will still be deployed later today, but there will be no level cap increase during the Subway/ Uncharted 3 Multiplayer Experience. Sorry for the confusion, hope this clears things up."
That's too bad for those who had their hopes up for this. Nonetheless, this certainly doesn't make Uncharted 3 any less of a good game.
Anyway, Uncharted 3 is set to come out on November 1st, just literally a couple of weeks away, and should feature the PSN Pass. There's also a mini-TV drama series coming from Sony Japan.

As to when that Robin trailer will be coming out, we've yet to know for certain. From the sound of it, though, it shouldn't be for too long.
It's likely that it will look something like the one tht came out for The Joker, though. Batman: Arkham City had its release dates confirmed the other day - October 18th for US, 19th for Australia, and 21st for Europe - with the PC version taking a definitive blow with a delay.

In a recent interview with Gamasutra, Sega president Mike Hayes expressed that nostalgia doesn't really sell as much as people perceive it to be.
This should come as a surprise considering that Sega is one of those companies who are known to stand firmly by their beloved franchises' side, such as Sonic the Hedgehog. Nonetheless, it is a pleasant surprise that though this may be their case, they're still keeping a practical head above their shoulders.
Said Hayes, "We have had experiences where we've tried to reinvent old Sega IP... Actually, we haven't done it hugely successfully. And therefore we only embark upon something that uses the existing Sega IP if we can make it highly relevant for a modern audience."
This discussion becomes relevant today, particularly because publishers are coming out with HD re-releases of prvious titles left and right. Obviously, they're milking the cow for all its worth, but somehow, we have to wonder if they've just run out of ideas.
It should be reassuring to hear, therefore, that not everyone believes that the good, old trusted formula can always be relied on. With all the new technology coming out, developers should be able to come up with something new as well, right?

"Making games is not a democracy and that's a good thing," he said. "It's not something I've discovered on this game, but it's the first time it's been so important to my work."
His point of reference, of course, is none other than his experience working on Deus Ex: HUmn Revolution. According to him, they had a pretty hard time during the early stages of development because fans were not happy with the fact that there's a new team on board. They were basically up against the wall as the game obviously was still cooking, and thus had nothing to show to the fans that would appease their distrust. "It was also the first time, in 11 years as a designer, that I was faced with so much anger and derision," he confessed.
Fortunately, the team rallied on, knowing that the only way they could overcome these criticisms was if they work hard at owning the game's development. The first game was obviously a tough act to follow, but they should not wallow in that, but instead use that as a stepping stone to come up with their own, better version for the sequel.
"We aimed to be faithful to the original game's essence, but not necessarily its mechanics. We kept what we liked and changed what we didn't. Sorry if we angered you, but making these decisions was our job."
He also admitted that they did not feel any remorse that they listened to their guts instead of the fans-turned-critics. "[That] would've made a terrible game. You can't design by committee. You need a leader with a vision. Ours was [director Jean-Francois]." He furthered, "When you're designing a game of this scope, you just cannot cater to everybody's whims or desires. You have to go for what will be relevant to most people."
Despite this non-democratic system of developing a game, at the end of the day, they still keep fast in mind that they are doing it for the consumers, the very people who matter most. "In the end, we did not design this game for the consoles or the PC. We did not design it for hardcore gamers, nor for casuals. It wasn't designed specifically for DX fans. We designed it for humans to enjoy. Whatever their classificaiton."
We're going to see soon enough the final product of Eidos Montreal's toil and hardwork once Deus Ex: Human Revolution comes out on August 23. If you want to make sure you're all ready for it, might as well chec out the Official Strategy Guide for it, which is already out now.
