Coming soon to an Xbox 360 near you: new character skins, new maps, and an all-new leveling mechanic.
RAAM’s Shadow, the first round of DLC for Microsoft’s exclusive Gears of War franchise, was released only days ago, and Epic Games does not intend to slow down the content barrage just because the holidays are ending. The second DLC pack, titled Fenix Rising, has officially been dated for a January 17 release, and it’s absolutely packed with new stuff for Gears fans to enjoy.
Here’s a quick breakdown on what you can expect from Fenix Rising:
Five new multiplayer maps
New leveling/unlock system
New multiplayer character skins
The new leveling system is of particular interest, providing players with a way to unlock special emblems and weapon skins. You’ll be able to level from 1-100, and then you’ll have the option of “re-upping,” a mechanism similar to the “prestige mode” of Call of Duty. Fenix Rising is currently priced at 800 Microsoft Points, or 800 points for those that jumped in on the Gears season pass.
Do you think a new leveling mechanic and a few new maps is enough to sell this DLC pack to the masses?

The sequel to one of the best-looking mobile games ever made has some serious problems on the original iPad and iPod Touch.
Infinity Blade II hit digital shelves yesterday, and while the game has earned praise from most fans and critics, some gamers haven’t been able to enjoy the game at all due to a pesky bug with older Apple hardware. Apparently, generation one iPads and older iPod Touches may experience performance problems when running the game, depending on how many apps you currently have installed.
Epic Games, the company behind Infinity Ward, is well aware of the problem and hard at work on a solution. The developer is aiming to patch the game “ASAP,” so keep an eye on your little blue App Store icon for the notification that an update is ready. The basic problem arose because Epic didn’t test the game on fully loaded devices, instead using test devices that had only the game and a couple of other apps.
As we know, iOS is prone to clutter and a large number of apps, combined with the hardware requirements of the game, are causing older devices to run out of system memory. There’s no official timeline on how long a patch will take, but I’d expect one within the next week or so.
Have you experienced any Infinity Blade II issues?

The latest game in the Elder Scrolls franchise is a certifiable hit, but not everyone that picked up the game is completely satisfied.
We all knew that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was going to be a big deal, but initial sales numbers have far outstripped expert predictions. In the first two days of the games launch, it landed an impressive 3.5 million copies sold – not counting Steam sales. That lands the game in Battlefield 3 territory, though not quite at MW3 levels.
For reference, the last game in the franchise opened with 490,000 sales. That’s quite a bounce from one game to the next.
The launch hasn’t been without issue though, and Xbox, PS3 and PC owners have all reported a myriad of strange and annoying bugs. The Xbox 360 is having issues reading saved textures, PS3 systems aren’t streaming textures correctly and PC systems are reporting random freezes and crashes.
It wouldn’t be a Bethesda game without a few bugs, and the company is aware of the issues. In fact, they’re more than aware, as evidenced by this hilarious tweet form Pet Hines, Bethesda’s VP of PR:
“Patches/updates take a little time. We can't turn it around quite that fast. It's been three days. Calm down. We're working on it.”
Also this:
“We will fix as much as we can for your platform. I don't know if it will fix "your" bug. Takes a while to test/fix/regress. Hang in there.”
Honestly, people do need to calm down. Bethesda delivered a 300-hour epic; it’s not surprising that it has a few issues. They’re working on it and that’s pretty much all they can do, so if you’re experiencing issues in Skyrim, rest assured that Bethesda is on the ball.
In the meantime, how awesome is that horse?!

If you’re looking for the GoW 3 Horde Command Pack today, you’re going to be sorely disappointed.
Gears of War three launched just over a month ago, and today was supposed to mark the first official DLC pack for the game. The Horde Command Pack was scheduled for release on November 1st (and has been for a while), but now seems to have been pushed back due to some sort of technical bug.
The DLC pack, which contains new multiplayer maps, new fortifications and new characters, has been briefly postponed with no real information available on an updated release. Here’s the full statement from Epic Games:
“The scheduled Horde Command Pack release for Gears of War 3 is temporarily delayed due to a technical issue. We apologize to those of you who are anxiously waiting to play. We know this is disappointing news as we’ve seen a lot of posts today showing excitement for this content. We have folks working around the clock to resolve this issue ASAP so you can all play and enjoy the Command Pack.”
All things considered, you’ll probably see the DLC next week. One thing that makes this particular hiccup unique is the existence of the Gears 3 season pass, which provides all DLC for one cheaper price. Since players have already paid for this DLC, the delay is a slightly bigger deal than if it were just rolling out a bit late.
Were you waiting for the Horde Command Pack? I can’t find the time to play the games hitting shelves now, much less download new content for previous releases.

While two juggernaut franchises go head-to-head, Bethesda’s latest RPG masterpiece creeps steadily up the charts.
There’s been tons of focus in recent months on the epic clash between Activision’s billion-dollar “call of Duty” franchise and EA’s smaller yet also enormously successful IP, “Battlefield.” Much of the narrative in the gaming press focuses on this clash of the titans as a “kill or be killed” scenario, in which one game is going to earn the rank of “hugest game ever” and the other will be forever condemned to obscurity.
Of course, we gamers know that both games are going to be massive successes regardless of who wins the sales battle, and the pre-order figures suggest that both EA and Activision are going to have very fine holiday seasons. What no one seems to have picked up on, however is how Bethesda’s “The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim” is creeping up the presale chart and now lies in third place, just 200,000 sales from “Battlefield 3.” Here’s a breakdown on the top ten contenders, thanks to VG Chartz:
1 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
X360 7 119,999 1,295,493
2 Battlefield 3
X360 5 71,468 743,227
3 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
X360 7 50,639 534,322
4 Star Wars: The Old Republic
PC 13 26,690 489,811
5 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
PS3 7 36,265 486,501
6 Assassin's Creed: Revelations
X360 8 16,131 350,670
7 The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Wii 9 30,470 347,238
8 Batman: Arkham City
X360 4 57,040 312,435
9 Battlefield 3
PS3 5 21,039 303,031
10 Batman: Arkham City
PS3 4 54,287 294,114
Overall, this chart doesn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know about the upcoming fall barrage of releases, except maybe that PS3 owners aren’t that into pre-ordering things. However, it would be fun to see the narrative between EA and Activision completely disrupted by a massive surge in “Skyrim” pre-orders.
I’m planning on picking up “Battlefield 3,” “Skyrim” and “Skyward Sword” this fall. What about you?

At the upcoming Blizzcon, analysts are predicting that Blizzard will be unveiling their latest masterpiece, Titan. How much veracity can this prediction have?
Blizzard has been very insistent that they won't be unveiling the said title at least until next year. Despite this insistence, however, speculations are high that one is set to happen at this year's event.
Said M2 Research analyst, "If they are holding any juicy details, it's going to be announced at Blizzcon. The big news is probably going to be a Diablo III date and a possible new announcement about one or more new properties."
Blizzcon is set to happen in Anaheim next month. Thing is, while the Diablo III update is almost a certainty, the bit about Titan is still clouded in a lot of doubts. True, the Blizzcon is a huge event, and one which should be the perfect platform for an announcement.
Then again, it is an annual thing, after all, so Blizzard shouldn't feel all too pressured to come out with a reveal at that time. On top of that, Blizzard is timing their projects very well, and with Diablo III and StarCraft II still waiting in the wings, I find no reason for them to rush Titan.
Also, one might take into consideration Blizzard's history as regards to developing games -- and revealing them. Their standing philosophy is: it'll be ready when it's ready. So at this point, while an impending, potential announcement of Titan may seem imminent, we're not all too bothered to press Blizzard about it. They've got a lot on their plate as it is.
On the other hand, though, it's never too early to start marketing a game that's set to be of epic proportions. Are you all excited to find out more about Titan this upcoming Blizzcon?

And here we have yet another Gears of War 3 news item. It shouldn't be surprising at this point anymore, especially because the game just launched today at midnight. Of course everyone's still going to be very hyped up about it.
Anyway, Microsoft wants to make sure they continue to open up opportunities for them to earn big bucks marketing the game by coming up with a new program, which should bring in "live" TV ads for Gears of War 3.
What this initiative will basically do is to air live players who are right at that moment playing the game, during your commercial breaks, while watching the tube. This way, TV viewers, like with any goal of advertising, will be lured to join in on the fun by buying the game.
UK can start expecting this kind of TV ads to come rolling in by September 23rd. If you're not too keen on the idea, though, no need to worry because they will only be running in until October 3rd, in six various 30-second TV spots.
It's a pretty cool idea, really, especially since Reality TV is all the rage now. I'm thinking the appeal - and eventual success - of this type of advertising will also be hinged on that new demand for individuals to see what other people are doing in their own lives, celebrity or not. A pretty rad and interesting concept, really.

Gears of War is already on its third installation, but it was only the third title that got approved by the German authorities.
Now that Marcus and friends are welcome to come in, Microsoft is now reportedly gearing up for a possible re-release of the first two titles for Germany.
A German Microsoft rep present at Gamescom 2011 was reportedly caught to have said that Microsoft "is looking into it," sparking up hopes that the franchise can now be complete for all of Germany to enjoy.
Mike Capps added fuel to the fire when at GDC this year, he said, "We were surprised that Gears of War 3 was rated here that we really didn't have an action plan [for Gamescom]. I'm very happy that the marketing team at Microsoft was able to put together a booth presence for us at Gamescome with a couple weeks notice."
Epic Games is supposed to have "something major happening" tomorrow for Gears of War 3. We have no idea what it could be about, but we'll definitely be keeping our eyes peeled for it!
