A brand new trailer marks the launch of the SSX demo.
SSX is just one week away from launch, and EA is doing everything it can to push the game to the front of people’s minds. If there’s one thing the company does better than any other, it’s marketing. Anyway, to celebrate the SSX demo that launched on PSN and Xbox Live early this morning, EA has released an all-new trailer featuring some previously unseen gameplay elements.
But you don’t have to take my word for it:
The trailer offers a few tips for the Race It mode, which challenges you to score the fastest time down a particular track by finding clean lines and slamming big tricks for boost. You know, the usual SSX stuff. The video is worth watching if you have a few minutes to spare, since the tips offered are universal to the game.
SSX drops February 28.

EA is bringing America’s favorite dysfunctional family to your iOS device.
Simpsons games, as a rule, have been pretty hit-or-miss. The arcade game was an instant classic, but some of the side-scrollers that showed up on various consoles throughout the 90s were utter garbage. The franchise saw renewed game-related praise for 2003’s Hit and Run, but has been mostly dark since then.
Well, Simpsons fans, your long wait has come to an end: EA is prepping a brand new Simpsons iOS game, titled The Simpsons: Tapped Out. The game will utilize writers from the show, as well as all of the relevant voice talent. Tapped Out revolves around rebuilding Springfield after Homer accidentally destroys it in a nuclear explosion.
The game is slotted firmly in the free-to-play notch, with the initial download being free but microtransactions aplenty. You’ll be able to trade your real-life cash for in-game doughnuts, which I can only assume will be used to unlock new characters and gameplay elements. Simpsons games are always risky, but with the writers and actors onboard, this should at least turn out interesting for fans.
Look for Tapped Out to hit the iTunes Store sometime this spring. And for you Android users, watch for the game a few months after that. As usual.

2K Games is sick of your people being godless heathens.
Civilization V stripped a number of elements from previous Civilization titles, resulting in an experience that was more streamlined and a little less intimidating for new players. While the result was no doubt a more accessible Civilization V, some hardcore players felt that Civ V offered less in the way of depth than its predecessors. 2K Games is looking to change that perception with the just-announced Gods and Kings expansion.
The days of orgies and vomitoriums are coming to a close, as religion is about to bounce its way back into the lives of your people. The Gods and Kings expansion brings promises of the afterlife and a few other familiar mechanics to your digital settlements.
Here’s a quick look at what you can expect to see when the expansion launches in spring:
13 new buildings
9 new wonders
27 new units
New tech
9 new civilizations
3 new scenarios
Religion returns
Smarter AI
Enhanced diplomacy
Espionage returns
New city-state types, Mercantile and Religious
Overall, it’s a pretty massive expansion (as is the norm for Civilization). The addition of religion and espionage will dramatically change the way in which conflicts and friendships unfold.
Now, to get started on my army of godless chariot archers. And godless trebuchets. Actually, just assume everything in my army is godless.

Mounting resistance to the controversial bill seems to have finally made an impression.
We’ve been talking a lot about SOPA over the last few days – as the bill grew ever closer to a vote, a growing number of websites and game developers started standing up in opposition. This opposition finally caught the attention of the United States Congress, and has resulted in the temporary delay of an official vote.
Darrell Issa, chairman of the house oversight and reform committee, noted that Eric Cantor (majority leader) confirmed the vote on SOPA would not take place until there is a consensus on the wording of the bill. This report hit simultaneously with stories noting that DNS blocking, one of the most controversial elements of SOPA, has been removed from the current draft.
For now, the SOPA hearing is postponed indefinitely. But the issue won’t be settled until the bill is either discarded, or voted down. As long as it hangs in the air, there’s a potential of its passage. The Obama administration issued a statement in opposition to the bill (though soft), and internet blackout events are still scheduled to occur on the 18th.
Issa summed the issue up nicely:
“The voice of the internet community has been heard. Much more education for members of Congress about the workings of the internet is essential if anti-piracy legislation is to be workable and achieve broad appeal.”
Remember, you can contact your Congressional representative and let them know how you feel via the Electronic Frontier Foundation

Sid Meier-helmed Firaxis Games drops some details on its upcoming strategy game, and essentially explode the Internet.
I don’t know if you browse other gaming news sites or follow any on Twitter, but if you do, there’s no way you missed the biggest bombshell of the day – Firaxis has officially announced a new game, titled XCOM: Enemy Unknown.
The studio, known for its perfectly tuned strategy titles, has long been at work on the game but remained relatively silent on its development. XCOM is being developed as a “full-on strategy” game, one that will reportedly “stay true” to some of the classic elements in the original franchise titles released throughout the late 90s.
XCOM is designed as a straight strategy title, with scenarios that demand an understanding of a broad battlefield as well as delicate micromanaging. Essentially, you’ll be in charge of a massive army as they fight to repel an invading alien force.
There’s no official release date in place, though Game Informer has a preview of the game in their upcoming issue and states XCOM: Enemy Unknown will hit shelves sometime in the fall. Oh, and it’s coming to consoles!

Chris Avellone: "Player Convenience" hurts RPG's
And enjoying having a player fanbase hurts game companies
Chris Avellone recently spoke with Industry Gamers about the current state of video games and where they are headed in terms of genre and gameplay. Avellone is a veteran, having worked on Planetscape:Torment, Fallout 2 and of course, Fallout New Vegas, Avellone knows how people play and yet seems that desiging for certain types of players can be frustrating.
Speaking with Industry Gamers he said that "the 'advances' have been more for player convenience - sometimes good, sometimes bad - in my opinion. Journals, quest compasses that point directly to the goal and show you the route, auto-maps, etc. are helpful; at the same time, I think it undermines the thrill of victory and discovery and a lot of what makes an RPG an RPG"
I've heard of the argument that over the past decade game designers have gotten soft on players and provide them with too much when it comes to games. I think Avellone is making a stance more on just the RPG genre itself rather than calling out flawed game design. Avellone was a lot more double-edged about the situation saying that in terms of non-interface elements he felt "the idea of morally grey choices and more focus on actions and consequences" have been great "for all RPG's."
In the past five years, RPG's have gotten a bit more sophisticated from the old Final Fantasy route of world ending, go help out. Avellone's own Planetscape Torment began to break the mould by introducing more of a grey system of good verus evil, rather than just fighting a big bad. There was another addition to Avellone enjoying new-gen RPG's with voice acting has really helped the RPG along well.
Avellone also talked about how the RPG genre is something that should really be added to gameplay more than just tacked on, for game's that do genre-bending. "Developers are seeing the worth in customization, levelling, dialogue, choice and reactivity and other elements that would normally be considered RPG mechanics and introducing them into multiple titles." Hopefully, Avellone will be working on the South Park game and making it worth it's weight in RPG gold.

Need to know how to survive in a post-apocalyptic wasteland? Watch this new trailer for I Am Alive and you’ll be well on your way.
I Am Alive’s official release is drawing ever closer, and to celebrate Ubisoft has released a brief trailer that shows off some of the stuff gamers can expect when they finally fire up the game. You’ll see a bit of wandering, a touch of climbing and a whole lot of dust, but that’s about it. The whole thing is presented as a sort of video blog from the game’s protagonist as he explains the basic rules of survival.
Check it out here:
While the trailer does establish some gameplay elements, combat and enemies are noticeably lacking. Ubisoft may want to keep that stuff on the down low until the game is closer to release; I Am Alive is currently slated for an early 2012 launch. The title has been in development for over three years now, and has gone through a couple of developers during its lifespan.
In the meantime, all we know is that the game was rebuilt from the ground up when the new development team took over, and that the story revolves around one young man’s efforts to stay alive in a dangerous, disintegrating world. You’ll meet other survivors, gather goods, and do whatever you can to stay out of the toxic clouds that coat the ground.
What do you think of this latest trailer?

PopCap re-launches one of the most popular puzzle games ever made, complete with a free version.
PopCap has officially removed the older version of Bejeweled 2 + Blitz, replacing it with a revamped version that features elements from Bejeweled 3. They’ve also gone and dropped a free version of the game, which consists solely of the one-minute “Score Attack” mode originally found in Bejeweled Blitz.
The new game, which goes by the same title as the retired version, contains the Zen and Diamond Mine modes found in Bejeweled 3, plus Classic play. And since PopCap is known for keeping their products updated, it’s only fair to assume that new features will be added over time.
Bejeweled 2 + Blitz is currently available on the iTunes Store for 99 cents – if you’re into puzzle games and time-wasters, it’s definitely worth a look. People love to talk about Angry Birds as the start of the mobile gaming revolution, but Bejeweled is actually second on the list of best-selling mobile games of all time, lead only by Tetris.

Ó

A job posting on the developer’s website leaks their upcoming Vita/PS3-exclusive.
Fresh from the rumor mill: Square Enix is developing an action-RPG title for the PS3 and PS Vita – one that involves airships. The story leaked earlier today when a couple of interesting job listings turned up for the company’s 1st Production Department – the section of Square Enix that works on Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts titles.
One of the listings describes the need for a “planner” that can design a player growth system and ability properties. Another requests someone that can create the “play elements” for an airship that navigates over a large world map. The genre is confirmed as “action-RPG,” and the listed hardware is Vita and PS3.
One interesting point in the listings page is the inclusion of the Unity engine. Square Enix is known for building their game engines from scratch, but a turn to Unity indicates they’re becoming increasingly accepting of third party solutions.
It’s worth noting that the listings do not specifically say they are for Square Enix positions, only that they are in reference to a game being developed by Square Enix’s 1st Production Department. The company could be outsourcing some tasks to a smaller developer or individuals, or they could be hiring new employees.
Either way, it’s safe to say whatever project is in development will be in development for some time to come.
