And the best part? It’s free! Sort of.
Skyrim is a massive game. With over 300 hours of gameplay (before you count the infinite-quest generator), it’s safe to assume that even the most seasoned RPG gamers will need a little help tracking down everything. Prima, a noted name in the world of game guides, has just dropped a very handy tool for doing just that.
The new Prima interactive Skyrim world map is available on any device that runs on iOS 5, and is 100% complete. Every quest, retrievable item, dungeon and secret is laid bare on the map—for a price, of course.
You’ll get the world map and maps of each of Skyrim’s nine holds with the app, but if you want detailed maps (over 1,000 points of interest, dungeons, etc.), you’ll have to rely on in-app purchases. You can also add your own points of interest to the map, which supports zooms up to 3200%.
The full app, with every dungeon and point of interest, will run you $10. Not too shabby, especially when you consider that a printed game guide usually lands around $20.
What do you think of digital game guides?

Metacritic’s numbers are in, and top honors go the Batman brawler.
Batman: Arkham City was obviously one of the best games of 2011. The game launched to both critical and player praise, and was one of very few games this year to earn a few perfect tens. Now, it looks like once all the reviews are tallied, Arkham City may actually be the most well reviewed game of the year.
Metacritic has just published its official top-rated games list for 2011, and the top ten should come as no surprise to anyone that played games last year. Arkham City took first place, followed by Skyrim and all three versions of Portal 2. Here’s the full lineup, courtesy of Destructoid:
1. Batman: Arkham City (PS3, 96)
2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Xbox 360, 96)
3. Portal 2 (PC, 95)
4. Portal 2 (Xbox 360, 95)
5. Portal 2 (PS3, 95)
6. Batman: Arkham City (Xbox 360, 94)
7. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS, 94)
8. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (PC, 94)
9. Mass Effect 2 (PS3, 94)
10. Minecraft (PC, 93)
Not really any surprises on this list, through the presence of different game versions does end up locking out a few games that should have been up there. That being said, we’d like to offer a congratulations to Rocksteady for topping the charts, as well as to all of the other developers that made a showing.
Would you call this list an accurate representation of the best of 2011?

It’s time for gaming outlets across the globe to drop their top ten lists, but we’d rather know what you think.
It seems like everyone in the world of gaming journalism is wrapping up the year with top ten lists galore – top ten games, top ten games by developer, top ten disappointments, etc. We here at QJ aren’t immune to the listing phenomenon, but rather than compile our own list (which would probably look similar to those already published), we figured we’d take the whole thing to our readers.
What we want to know is which games captured your imagination this year, which games you loved and which games you thought didn’t get enough attention from the gaming press. We’d also love to know which games you thought were the most overhyped, or the most disappointing. Feel free to drop your own list in the comments – we’ll be reading them!
Here’s a quick reminder on some of the big and notable titles of the year:
L.A. Noire
Batman: Arkham City
Portal 2
Modern Warfare 3
Bastion
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Assassin’s Creed: Revelations
Saints Row the Third
Battlefield 3
The Witcher II
Dungeon Siege 3
Dead Space 2
Gears of War 3
Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Minecraft
Super Mario 3D Land
Dark Souls
Whew – that’s a lot of games, and we’re sure we missed a few somewhere in there. So sound off and let us know – which game was the most fun, which was the most beautiful, which is the one you’ll play the longest?

AP has finished its list of the best games of 2011, and it’s surprisingly good.
2011 was, from any way of measuring, a massive year in the world of video games. We saw tons of excellent indie releases and more AAA chart-burners than any reasonable person could have time to play. Now that the year is winding down, it’s time for gaming publications all over the world to start compiling their annual “best of lists,” with the Associated Press leading the pack.
Despite not being a game-specific outlet, AP has put together a relatively strong listing. Taking top honors is Portal 2, but Bastion, Skyrim, Arkham City and even Rayman are represented. Here’s the full top ten:
1. Portal 2
2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
3. Dues Ex: Human Revolution
4. Bastion
5. Batman: Arkham City
6. InFamous 2
7. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
8. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
9. Rayman Origins
10. Dead Space 2
Wow. I had completely forgotten Dead Space 2 was this year. Long year for games, I guess!
Do you see anything on the list you’d like to dispute? Any games missing? Sound off in the comments.

37 days after launch, Skyrim still has major problems on the PS3. Here’s what you can do to make things better.
Skyrim launched with its fair share of bugs and glitches, but none has been as devastating as the PlayStation 3’s save file problem. In short, the size of Skyrim’s save file and the way that file interacts with the PS3’s architecture create a situation in which the system struggles to keep up with your ever-expanding save, eventually dragging gameplay into a slow, laggy mess.
Bethesda attempted to fix the issue earlier this month, but many users are still experiencing the same issue. And while there’s no official fix to the problem (one could still be weeks away), there are a few things that have been reported to help alleviate the symptoms.
If you’re having trouble with Skyrim on your PS3, here are a few things you can try to make it run more smoothly:
Clear Space on Your Hard Drive: This is only effective if you wipe several gigabytes of installed games and is not guaranteed to positively impact Skyrim’s gameplay. Only test it if you’re not worried about re-installing games.
Turn off Auto-Save:  Turning off the auto-save function helps keep your overall save file size down, but probably won’t change issues you’re already experiencing. Still, it’s worth a shot.
Control Your File Size: Skyrim keeps track of everything you do, from leaving doors open to moving fruit around your house. Do what you can to leave the environment as undisturbed as possible and you’ll keep your save file down to a more manageable size.
Restart the PS3: No guarantees here either, but some players report that a quick restart can help limit frame rate issues for long play sessions. Always worth a shot, right?
What’s really amazing about this problem is that it somehow made it into the final version of the game. It’s astounding to think that no tester at Bethesda put enough time into the PlayStation 3 version to hit a bug that’s apparently affecting a very large sampling of the user base. Then again, you can’t always catch everything, right?
Let us know if you have troubles with your Skyrim install, and if any of these solutions help. In the meantime, how should Bethesda make this up to customers?

Bethesda celebrates shipping over 10 million units of the expansive role-playing game, and setting a few records along the way.
The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is a pretty big deal. We knew that already, especially after watching it pass Modern Warfare 3 on the weekly UK sales charts and crash to the top of the pre-order list earlier this year. But it wasn’t really clear how big a deal the game is until today, when Bethesda confirmed that they have shipped over 10 million copies of their latest opus.
The parent company of Bethesda, ZeniMax Media, boasts that these numbers equal about $650 million in revenue. Sure, it’s not a billion in 16 days, but it’s certainly no small amount of cash. The game also broke records on Steam, with Valve’s Jason Holtman confirming that Skyrim is the fastest-selling game in the history of the digital distribution platform. It’s worth noting that ZeniMax’s revenue estimate assumes people will purchase every shipped copy of the game at full price.
Skyrim even managed to outstrip Modern Warfare 3 – by all other measures the largest entertainment product ever launched. Though Skyrim has been marred by bugs since release, most critics and gamers are giving it favorable reviews and the massive sales instill hope that developers may be more willing to work on huge, expansive projects.
The holiday season is still charging on, so it will be a few weeks before we find out where everyone landed. But look for Skyrim to have a sizeable impact on game sales this year – the one RPG in a sea of shooters. Here’s hoping this inspires more RPGs from other studios.
Did you pick up a copy of Skyrim already? Any complaints?

If you’ve been busy with holiday preparations or fighting off dragon invasions, here are some things you may have missed.
It’s been a somewhat busy week for the games industry, though most of the news has to do with titles that have already been released rather than things that are about to come out. We’re fast approaching the end of the crazy rush of releases and people seem to be settling down into their gaming habits.
Modern Warfare, Battlefield and Skyrim dominated the news this week, and plenty of commenters stormed our posts to let their voices heard. So without further ado, here’s your:
Infinity Ward Swings the MW3 Banhammer
Modern Warfare 3 has been out since the 8th, and lead creative strategist Robert Bowling has confirmed that Infinity Ward has already banned over 1,600 players for cheating, hacking and glitching. Most people seem pretty happy about Infinity Ward’s commitment to stopping cheating, but some commenters can’t resist another chance to take pot shots at the Call of Duty franchise.
PS3 Battlefield 3 Owners Getting Battlefield 1943
Sony’s Jack Tretton announced that the PS3 version of Battlefield 3 would come packed with Battlefield 1943, but that bonus failed to materialize. Some gamers filed a class action lawsuit against EA (which I still don’t understand), and faced with intense media pressure and the ire of Battlefield fans everywhere, the developer caved. So, free Battlefield 1943 for everyone!
EB Games Canada Dropping Pre-Owned Games
There is a rumor floating around the retail games industry that EB Games, a subsidiary of GameStop, is planning to mix its used and new games together. The familiar yellow “used” tags will be replaced with white “used” tags, so while the games will still be noted as used products, the similar labels may confuse less savvy gamers. We’re still waiting to see how this story plays out.
Skyrim Map Contains all of Tamriel
One gamer’s realization that the entire landmass of Tamriel is built into the map for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim led us to wonder why exactly the content was included. Some venture it’s intended as a resource for modders, some think it’s just to add realism to the environment, and some think it’s for potential DLC content down the road. What do you think?
Square Enix: We Want a Final Fantasy Every Year
Square Enix was apparently unhappy with the development time of Final Fantasy XIII and is hoping to up their release schedule to something more along the lines of Assassin’s Creed or Call of Duty. There seem to be people on both sides of this particular post, some excited about more frequent Final Fantasy games, others concerned about the quality loss that may occur as the result of such a cramped development schedule.
So there are your most commented posts of the week. And, as is now tradition, it’s time to award one lucky reader the prestigious “Comment of the Week” award. This week’s award goes to Harv_ironlung, for his very thoughtful and poignant response to Keith Vaz: Ban Call of Duty:

Well said, Harv_ironlung. I don’t think I could have said it any better myself.

Looking towards the future of the enormously successful Elder Scrolls game, is it possible that we’ll be visiting Morrowind soon?
Skyrim is a massive game, both in terms of gameplay time and in terms of pure size. The geographic layout of Skyrim isn’t the largest map ever conceived, but it’s certainly one of the most detailed and is packed with more activities per square yard than any other game I can think of off the top of my head.
But recently discovered evidence indicates that the province of Skyrim may be just the beginning for this, the fifth game in the Elder Scrolls series.
One savvy 19-year-old gamer has discovered that the entire landmass of Tamriel was actually built into Skyrim. For those that are unfamiliar with the franchise, Skyrim is just one nation in the larger empire of Tamriel – Morrowind and Oblivion are also parts of this empire. What this gamer has figured out is that Bethesda built every part of Tamriel into the map, even though players can currently only access Skyrim itself.
Right now, invisible walls block progress to those other locations. But it’s entirely possible that we’ll see DLC aimed at expanding our character’s travels. After all, Bethesda has to have built the entire landmass for a reason – it could be for DLC, it could be for looks, and it could be for the benefit of modders.
Do you think opening the lands of Tamriel is a good plan for DLC, or would you rather see more Skyrim (the nation)-specific content?

The latest game in the Elder Scrolls franchise is a certifiable hit, but not everyone that picked up the game is completely satisfied.
We all knew that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was going to be a big deal, but initial sales numbers have far outstripped expert predictions. In the first two days of the games launch, it landed an impressive 3.5 million copies sold – not counting Steam sales. That lands the game in Battlefield 3 territory, though not quite at MW3 levels.
For reference, the last game in the franchise opened with 490,000 sales. That’s quite a bounce from one game to the next.
The launch hasn’t been without issue though, and Xbox, PS3 and PC owners have all reported a myriad of strange and annoying bugs. The Xbox 360 is having issues reading saved textures, PS3 systems aren’t streaming textures correctly and PC systems are reporting random freezes and crashes.
It wouldn’t be a Bethesda game without a few bugs, and the company is aware of the issues. In fact, they’re more than aware, as evidenced by this hilarious tweet form Pet Hines, Bethesda’s VP of PR:
“Patches/updates take a little time. We can't turn it around quite that fast. It's been three days. Calm down. We're working on it.”
Also this:
“We will fix as much as we can for your platform. I don't know if it will fix "your" bug. Takes a while to test/fix/regress. Hang in there.”
Honestly, people do need to calm down. Bethesda delivered a 300-hour epic; it’s not surprising that it has a few issues. They’re working on it and that’s pretty much all they can do, so if you’re experiencing issues in Skyrim, rest assured that Bethesda is on the ball.
In the meantime, how awesome is that horse?!

Well, Skyrim is finally out after what seems like an eternity of waiting. So does it live up to the hype, or is it just another victim of its own expectations?
Although Skyrim won’t be the largest launch of the year in terms of sales, it’s still among the most highly anticipated. Gamers around the world called in sick today to jump into the world of Skyrim, slay some dragons, and make absolutely no progress in what is an essentially infinite game. Since the review embargo has been lifted, we’re starting to hear more and more about the game that has for so long been on the tip of everyone’s tongue. So how did it turn out?
Well, in short, great. The game is sitting comfortably at a 96 on Metacritic, barely edging out Skyward Sword for the top spot in new releases. I’ve read through some of the Skyrim reviews and I think I can give you a general idea of what everyone is saying, just in case you’re on the fence about buying the game.
Pros: Reviewers are praising the game’s open world and freedom of exploration. I’ve also seen plenty of compliments for the radiant questing system that ensure you always have something to do, and PC reviews note that the graphics of this game put older Elder Scrolls games to shame. Some reviewers praise the plot and character development, but this is by no means consistent. I’m seeing the word “ever” thrown around a lot, as in “the most liberating RPG ever,” or “most open world ever,” so take that how you will.
Cons: The game, typical to Bethesda form, is packed with bugs. Nothing major, but little glitches like floating mobs, weird collision detection and, my favorite bug of all, a character’s inability to realize there is a cooking pot on their head. These will probably be ironed out over time. Some reviewers have noted that the animation, while improved from Oblivion, is still fairly stilted – third person play isn’t really that improved. The clunky combat system is also listed as a minor problem, but if you like the Elder Scrolls series or Fallout 3 you’ll feel right at home.
So that’s the basic overview. Naturally, Skyrim is a massive experience that can’t be summed up in a review. It certainly looks like a good buy, assuming you’re into that sort of game.
Did you get Skyrim today? How’s it working out?

New details about the game’s “Creation Engine” reveal that it will generate new quests into infinity.
Skyrim is a huge game. We knew that already, what with the predictions of a 300-hour gameplay experience. But what we didn’t know is that the game actually continues into infinity, automatically generating content for as long as you feel like playing it.
Sound confusing? Well it is – a little bit. Game director for Skyrim, Todd Howard, has talked a bit about how the games’ new Radiant storytelling system never stops spitting out content, even after you finish the scripted stuff.
Howard says that the game’s engine will randomly create new quests for players that are engineered to send people into areas they haven’t previously visited. Quests can include assassinations, stealing things and, more than likely, slaying dragons. Oh, and don’t worry about running out of dragons – they’re infinite too.
Frankly, I find the idea of an infinite game somewhat terrifying. I downloaded Minecraft last night and even that was enough to overwhelm me, so I’m not really looking forward to trying to sort out everything Skyrim has to offer. I just don’t have 300 hours to put into one title, especially not in the face of the 2011 holiday barrage.
What about you. Do you have time for infinite quests?

Next week is a pretty huge week for games, and we’ve got all the details in this week’s edition of “On Shelves.”
Well, the time has finally come. We’re just a few days away from the most exciting launch of the year – Skryim. Wait, did you think I meant something else? Oh, sure, I guess Modern Warfare 3 will be pretty popular too, but it’s no Elder Scrolls.
Right?
Anyway, here’s your list of upcoming titles, ordered by which ones I saw first:
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Xbox 360, PS3, PC
ESRB Mature
Infinity Ward
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Xbox 360, PS3, PC
ESRB Mature
Bethesda
L.A. Noir: The Complete Edition
PC
ESRB Mature
Rockstar
Metal Gear Solid HD Collection
PS3
ESRB Teen/Mature
Konami
Heavy Fire: Afghanistan – The Chosen Few
Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii, 3DS
ESRB Teen
Mastiff
Dawn of Fantasy
PC
ESRB Teen
Reverie World
Big League Sports
Xbox 360
ESRB Everyone
Activision
Cave Story 3D
3DS
ESRB Everyone
NIS America
LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7
PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, 3DS, PSP, PC.
ESRB Everyone
Traveller’s Tales
So there’s your list. It’s pretty big (and doesn’t include everything), but really it comes down to only two games. So what’s your poison, Skyrim or MW3?

Bethesda releases a quick clip from the special edition DVD, “Behind The Wall: The Making of Skyrim.”
Skyrim is just under two weeks away from release, and many RPG lovers (read: me) are pretty freaking stoked. Bethesda is looking to capitalize on this hype as much as possible, and has released this quick clip from their behind-the-scenes DVD:
This three-minute clip covers the making of the Skyrim trailer and features developer commentary on how they went about putting the whole thing together. If you’re a fan of Oblivion or Fallout 3, you may even recognize a few friendly faces as the video roams the back halls of Bethesda’s labs. The video clip is just one part of the documentary developed for the game, but gives a good indication as to what kinds of content you can expect.
Of course, if you want to watch the rest of the video, you’ll need to pick up a collector’s edition of Skyrim. I would do that, except it costs an absolutely ridiculous $149.99, thought it does seem to be packed with cool stuff.
If you opt for the CE, here’s what you’ll find:
Alduin Statue. Created in conjunction with the IP Factory, this collector's only statue stands 12" tall and is made of high quality PVC. Modeled from actual in-game 3D digital files, it showcases Alduin, the World Eater.
The Art of Skyrim' Official Art Book. Featuring over 200 pages of striking, full-color illustrations, sketches and models, this stunning 9 3/8" x 12 1/8" coffee table book showcases the characters, creatures, environments, and weaponry of Skyrim.
The Making of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim' DVD. This documentary DVD contains exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage, including interviews with the Bethesda Game Studios team.
Are you getting excited about 11/11/11? Did you pick up a collector’s edition, or does the high price point turn you off?
I’m sure there are some Elder Scrolls fanatics that are okay with buying a game at that price point, but personally, I would opt for one regular copy of Skyrim and one regular copy of Skyward Sword.
