The latest game in the Elder Scrolls franchise is a certifiable hit, but not everyone that picked up the game is completely satisfied.
We all knew that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was going to be a big deal, but initial sales numbers have far outstripped expert predictions. In the first two days of the games launch, it landed an impressive 3.5 million copies sold – not counting Steam sales. That lands the game in Battlefield 3 territory, though not quite at MW3 levels.
For reference, the last game in the franchise opened with 490,000 sales. That’s quite a bounce from one game to the next.
The launch hasn’t been without issue though, and Xbox, PS3 and PC owners have all reported a myriad of strange and annoying bugs. The Xbox 360 is having issues reading saved textures, PS3 systems aren’t streaming textures correctly and PC systems are reporting random freezes and crashes.
It wouldn’t be a Bethesda game without a few bugs, and the company is aware of the issues. In fact, they’re more than aware, as evidenced by this hilarious tweet form Pet Hines, Bethesda’s VP of PR:
“Patches/updates take a little time. We can't turn it around quite that fast. It's been three days. Calm down. We're working on it.”
Also this:
“We will fix as much as we can for your platform. I don't know if it will fix "your" bug. Takes a while to test/fix/regress. Hang in there.”
Honestly, people do need to calm down. Bethesda delivered a 300-hour epic; it’s not surprising that it has a few issues. They’re working on it and that’s pretty much all they can do, so if you’re experiencing issues in Skyrim, rest assured that Bethesda is on the ball.
In the meantime, how awesome is that horse?!

New details about the game’s “Creation Engine” reveal that it will generate new quests into infinity.
Skyrim is a huge game. We knew that already, what with the predictions of a 300-hour gameplay experience. But what we didn’t know is that the game actually continues into infinity, automatically generating content for as long as you feel like playing it.
Sound confusing? Well it is – a little bit. Game director for Skyrim, Todd Howard, has talked a bit about how the games’ new Radiant storytelling system never stops spitting out content, even after you finish the scripted stuff.
Howard says that the game’s engine will randomly create new quests for players that are engineered to send people into areas they haven’t previously visited. Quests can include assassinations, stealing things and, more than likely, slaying dragons. Oh, and don’t worry about running out of dragons – they’re infinite too.
Frankly, I find the idea of an infinite game somewhat terrifying. I downloaded Minecraft last night and even that was enough to overwhelm me, so I’m not really looking forward to trying to sort out everything Skyrim has to offer. I just don’t have 300 hours to put into one title, especially not in the face of the 2011 holiday barrage.
What about you. Do you have time for infinite quests?

Bethesda releases a quick clip from the special edition DVD, “Behind The Wall: The Making of Skyrim.”
Skyrim is just under two weeks away from release, and many RPG lovers (read: me) are pretty freaking stoked. Bethesda is looking to capitalize on this hype as much as possible, and has released this quick clip from their behind-the-scenes DVD:
This three-minute clip covers the making of the Skyrim trailer and features developer commentary on how they went about putting the whole thing together. If you’re a fan of Oblivion or Fallout 3, you may even recognize a few friendly faces as the video roams the back halls of Bethesda’s labs. The video clip is just one part of the documentary developed for the game, but gives a good indication as to what kinds of content you can expect.
Of course, if you want to watch the rest of the video, you’ll need to pick up a collector’s edition of Skyrim. I would do that, except it costs an absolutely ridiculous $149.99, thought it does seem to be packed with cool stuff.
If you opt for the CE, here’s what you’ll find:
Alduin Statue. Created in conjunction with the IP Factory, this collector's only statue stands 12" tall and is made of high quality PVC. Modeled from actual in-game 3D digital files, it showcases Alduin, the World Eater.
The Art of Skyrim' Official Art Book. Featuring over 200 pages of striking, full-color illustrations, sketches and models, this stunning 9 3/8" x 12 1/8" coffee table book showcases the characters, creatures, environments, and weaponry of Skyrim.
The Making of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim' DVD. This documentary DVD contains exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage, including interviews with the Bethesda Game Studios team.
Are you getting excited about 11/11/11? Did you pick up a collector’s edition, or does the high price point turn you off?
I’m sure there are some Elder Scrolls fanatics that are okay with buying a game at that price point, but personally, I would opt for one regular copy of Skyrim and one regular copy of Skyward Sword.

Bethesda game director Todd Howard talks about how the team learned from Fallout’s success and Oblivion’s mistakes to make Skryim as interesting and engaging as possible.
Skyrim is coming, and with it, an entirely new engine on which Bethesda can build future games. But the advent of the Creation Engine doesn’t necessarily mean that the company is forgetting its past, and in a series of interviews with PC Gamer, game director Todd Howard has elaborated on some of the ways that previous Bethesda RPGs informed the development of Skryim.
For example, Oblivion fans will remember that enemies scaled in level with the player, which always made for a long slog through mobs when you needed to get from one location to another. Howard says this system has been completely redone based on Fallout 3’s progression stating, “[Skyrim]’s a lot more like Fallout 3, where as you level up you are going to see harder things, but the easier things stay around as well.”
They’ve also significantly cleaned up the conversation system, which often felt strange and out of place in Oblivion. Fallout 3 fans will remember that the dialogue stood out as one of the most interesting features of that game, and Bethesda is looking to repeat its success in this department with targeted, specific conversations. On this topic, Howard noted, “There’s very few completely random conversations. We’ve gone more towards a system, like we did in Fallout 3, where they have a specific conversation with a specific person about various topics.”
The interview also goes into brief detail about how the environment of Fallout 3 contributed to the user experience, and how the Skryim team is utilizing environments and memorable scenery to enhance the player experience.
After watching a pretty long preview for Skyrim the other day, I have to say the game is looking quite good. Do you think these changes to the Elder Scrolls formula will enhance the title, or will you miss some of the elements removed since Oblivion?
