Croteam eschews product codes or secure-ROM and comes up with a much better and more awesome way to deal with pirates.
The heated battle between gamers and game companies regarding piracy rages on, with publishers placing ever-more restrictive DRM on their games, sometimes to the detriment of paying customers. Always-on DRM and other such catastrophes often do more to hinder legitimate customers than sneaky pirates, who inevitably crack the security measures and play on, trouble-free.
But some developers have absolutely brilliant methods for dealing with piracy, and they have nothing to do with DRM. Instead, they code the game to recognize when it’s been pirated, and play differently as a result. For example, if Arkham Asylum thinks it has been stolen, Batman becomes incredibly clumsy and unable to glide. Cracked did a great article on this interesting method of fighting pirates, you can read it here if you’re interested.
Croteam’s solution is just as awesome as a clumsy Batman. If you pirate a copy of Serious Sam 3 and the game figures out what happens, you’ll be constantly followed and attacked by a massive and invincible pink scorpion monster.
Check it out in action:
This is by far the best way to deal with pirates. It’s not inconvenient for paid gamers, and it only affects people that illegally download the game. More companies should look into anti-piracy measures like this, just for the amount of entertainment it gives everyone in the non-pirate community. It’s especially funny when a pirate complains about the feature on the game’s official forums and is promptly smacked down for pirating, as was the case with Arkham Asylum.
What do you think of Croteam’s piracy solution?

How would you like to own for yourself a very limited Tomb Raider Xbox 360 edition?
Yes, a console fully designed with Eidos Interactive's lovely heroine's latest adventure in the Tomb Raider franchise. It's definitely worth drolling over you. Why settling for merely ogling at it, though, when you can grab it right in your hands?
All you have to do is to answer three Tomb Raider trivia questions which are be posted on the game's official social networking sites on Facebook, Twitter, and Crystal Habit. When you do find the trivia question, head over immediately to the Tomb Raider podcast and shout out your answer. Well, not literally, but just make sure you're on time and loud and clear.
As for the houserules, you must be 18 years of age. So far, that's the only limitation we see in who can join in the contest. Oh, and with lots of patience, so it appears. Patience for waiting for your Tomb Raider Xbox 360 Limited Edition to arrive on your doorstep some 6-7 weeks after the announcement of the winner.
What are you waiting for? Go try your luck out, and have fun while at it. No sense still thinking another Lara Croft adventure is a tad unnecessary, when the devs obviously feel different about that. Besides, the console does look hot, admit it.

In case you came across the rumor that a demo for Batman: Arkham City is on its way out, then it's best for you to shrug it off.
If you'll remember, back at this year's E3, Rocksteady brought out a playable version of the demo on their floor. Now, as the rumors had it, that same demo would be released later on, "worldwide" through the XBL and PSN. Curiously, though, the site which reported this claimed that it was to be published by Eidos.
Now, Arkham City, like Arkham Asylum was, is of course going to be published by Warner Bros. Community Manager Sarah May already sent out word that said information about the demo is definitely false. She maintains that Rockstead, in fact, still hasn't decided yet whether or not to release said demo to the public via those means.
Regardless of their decision on the demo, what we do know for certain is that there will be an album coming out for it. Also, if you really can't wait to get your hands on it, might as well try your best to make it to the next PlayStation Access event. Arkham City is going to be playable there.

It allowed players to choose how they progress through the game's story with a variety of gameplay mechanics, ultimately shaping the overall outcome of the adventure. Dues Ex: Human Revolution, developed by Eidos-Montreal and published by Square-Enix, takes place 25 years before the events of the first title, but can the team at Eidos re-create the original's magic without its creator?

If there's one thing that the Deus Ex: Human Revolution developers are proud of, it's the fact that they spent just as much time working on the PC version of the game as they did with its console counterparts.
It's an age-old tale: game gets developed for consoles, PC gets shoddy version. Eidos isn't about to fall into that cycle of convenience and laziness, however, and has reassured PC fans through their interview with GameSpy that the PC version was designed on PC first, for consoles.
Said Eidos Montreal director of technology, Julien Bouvrais:
"Obviously, while console versions of the game were part of the picture, PC was also a big focus. It was simply out of the question to do a straight port of the console version to PC, while being able to keep the essence of the adventure we experienced seven years before. With this in mind, we started exploring ways to best create the whole Deus Ex: Human Revolution project -- console and PC."
For the PC version of the game, developer Nixxes developed a specific X11 renderer for the platform. Furthered Bouvrais:
"We did leverage this by adding several features you will see when you have DX11 hardware on your PC: a real-time tessellation, improved Screen Space Ambient Occlusion, improved blurs and depth of field. We also added custom support for AMD's Eyefinity (multiple monitors), and 3DHD. On another note, the user interface has been tailored for the keyboard, and mouse controls can be fully customizable for your gaming habits."
Now that Deus Ex: Human Revolution has gone gold, you should already have checked if your hardware meets the specific requirements of the game. Are you ready for it?

Democracy may be what's all the rage in governments today, but it's definitely not for videogame making. This was the sentiment proclaimed by Eidos Montreal lead game designer, Francois Lapikas, on their official blog.
"Making games is not a democracy and that's a good thing," he said. "It's not something I've discovered on this game, but it's the first time it's been so important to my work."
His point of reference, of course, is none other than his experience working on Deus Ex: HUmn Revolution. According to him, they had a pretty hard time during the early stages of development because fans were not happy with the fact that there's a new team on board. They were basically up against the wall as the game obviously was still cooking, and thus had nothing to show to the fans that would appease their distrust. "It was also the first time, in 11 years as a designer, that I was faced with so much anger and derision," he confessed.
Fortunately, the team rallied on, knowing that the only way they could overcome these criticisms was if they work hard at owning the game's development. The first game was obviously a tough act to follow, but they should not wallow in that, but instead use that as a stepping stone to come up with their own, better version for the sequel.
"We aimed to be faithful to the original game's essence, but not necessarily its mechanics. We kept what we liked and changed what we didn't. Sorry if we angered you, but making these decisions was our job."
He also admitted that they did not feel any remorse that they listened to their guts instead of the fans-turned-critics. "[That] would've made a terrible game. You can't design by committee. You need a leader with a vision. Ours was [director Jean-Francois]." He furthered, "When you're designing a game of this scope, you just cannot cater to everybody's whims or desires. You have to go for what will be relevant to most people."
Despite this non-democratic system of developing a game, at the end of the day, they still keep fast in mind that they are doing it for the consumers, the very people who matter most. "In the end, we did not design this game for the consoles or the PC. We did not design it for hardcore gamers, nor for casuals. It wasn't designed specifically for DX fans. We designed it for humans to enjoy. Whatever their classificaiton."
We're going to see soon enough the final product of Eidos Montreal's toil and hardwork once Deus Ex: Human Revolution comes out on August 23. If you want to make sure you're all ready for it, might as well chec out the Official Strategy Guide for it, which is already out now.

Last Friday, Sega confirmed the unfortunate news that their online service, Sega Pass, had been hacked, and therefore had to be taken down. Today, the publisher confirmed that pertinent details of their customers did get stolen.
In a press release sent out earlier today, Sega revealed the real extent of the damage that the hack brought about. A whopping 1,290,755 accounts were affected, with information such as names, email addresses, birth dates and encrypted passwords. Fortunately, if you could take it that way, no financial data were on Sega Pass.
Said Sega, "We express our sincerest apologies to our customers for the inconvenience and concern caused by this matter. Sega Pass is the service used to provide information about our new products to registered members and does not hold any customer financial information.
After the unauthorized entry was identified, we immediately stopped the Sega Pass service and took emergency action to prevent further damage. This action included immediately contacting all our registered Sega Pass users. We are now fully investigating the cause of the incident."
The publisher also reassured that they will be keeping customers abreast on the developments through their official website for Sega Europe. Because of this intrusion, they have also promised that they will "strengthen network security as a priority issue."

This can't be good at all. Codemasters sent out an email to their customers, informing that they have been hacked. To make it worse, personal information has been confirmed to have been stolen.
Said their somber email, "On Friday 3rd une, unauthorized entry was gained to our Codemasters.com website. As soon as the intrusion was detected, we immediately took codemasters.com and associated web services offline in order to prevent any further intrusion."
The information stolen were taken from their EStore databank, including names, addresses, email addresses, telephone numbers, encrypted passwords and order histories.
There's good news in all of this, though. Codemasters reassures that "no personal payment information was stored with Codemasters as we use external payment providers, meaning your payment details were not at risk from this intrusion."
Their email continued, "Whilst we do not have confirmation that any of this data was actually downloaded onto an external device, we have to assume that, as access was gained, all of these details were compromised and /or stolen."
Previously, it was Square Enix who got hacked, following the now infamous PSN breach.

Canadian newspaper lapresseaffaires is reporting that Square Enix is looking around Canada to set up shop. Could there be any truth to this?
According to the paper, it should be, if subsidiary Eidos Montreal's meetings with the Canadian government is any indication. Reportedly, Eidos Montreal director Stehpane d'Astous is in discussion with the government to be granted tax incentives.
Eidos Montreal would be the only Square Enix studio currently residing in Canada. It is also furthered that they're looking at Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal for the prospective location of their new studio.
originally, Square Enix was said to be making their pick from among Orlando, Atlanta and Raleigh in mainland US, but has since changed their minds and is now opting for Canada instead.
As it stands, more developers are putting up shop in Montreal, so if they are to follow that trend then it would probably be most likely that Square Enix will be opening their new studio there. This, on top of the fact that they already have Eidos in the area.
There's still no final decision on the matter, but if all goes well, then one should be reached, and subsequently announced, come May.
