Take 2 Boss Criticizes Yearly Schedule Releases
With games like Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty being released every year, who has time for quality.
Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is a force to be reckoned with. A man who has helped push some of the most innovative and creatively awesome titles to the finish line over the years, but over those years has been time...effort...killing hookers, so when Zelnick says that the current model of yearly releases isn't sustainable, he knows what he's talking about.
Big budget Triple-A titles need time and effort put upon them, not just a new coat of paint, a first-draft script and some geographically confused accents. Zelnick was a speaker at the UBS Media and Communications conference and whilst Zelnick didn't specificially name any franchises he had however, just finished discussing Activision's stance in the market place.
Zelnick said that if "you start trying to stamp these products out annually, we don't think that's consistent with a high-quality result", essentially the current Call of Duty model, even with a subscription service, is not sustainable. Zelnick added that if you give consmers something every year like clockwork, they will eventually grow tired of it.
Whilst I would agree with Zelnick, MW3 did pull in over half a billion dollars in sales last month and I tend not to argue with creative figures that I will never ever ever ever ever ever see in my lifetime.
Figures have been coming out about how GameStop and a few other retailers have sold over half a million Premium Subscriptions to Call of Duty's subscription service, Elite and have continued to grow as such. Zelnick queried the viability of such a subscription service, saying he could't tell whether it was relevant yet. "I'm kind of skeptical, frankly. I suspect that we want a different experience on our big screen than we do on our middle-sized screen than we do on our mobile screen, because I think we use them at different times and they mean different things. I do think an intellectual property can thread through, but only if it is really high quality."
That being said users who signed up for Elite crashed the servers twice in the first week of release due to it's popularity and the unbelivable amount of support that Activision had not prepared for. Jamie Berger of Activision has acttually said that "right now, it's an option", when talking about Elite, but he also adds that it might not be in "3-5 years."
So both Activision and Zelnick are not thinking about keeping a community running in the long term; they should team up on something.

Ó

Let’s talk about some of the issues with Battlefield 3’s multiplayer, and why it sometimes feel like DICE may have released the game a pinch too soon.
I’m not a huge Battlefield fan. When I say that, what I mean is that I didn’t play the older games and don’t have any extreme allegiance to the brand. I do prefer Battlefield to Call of Duty due to the more realistic sniping mechanics and a greater focus on team play, but I’m not the sort of person that runs around preaching about which game is superior. I like Battlefield games, but I wouldn’t call them my favorites.
I picked up Battlefield 3 on launch day and have since been playing multiplayer whenever I have some down time. I should probably note that I have the Xbox 360 version, so some of the things I’m talking about may or may not be applicable to your personal experiences with the game. I’ve never put the campaign disc in the tray and I doubt I ever will, so I can’t really say much about the single player.
For the most part, multiplayer feels like a well-oiled machine. Most maps seem well planned and I’m getting a fair amount of fun from earning unlocks and capturing points. Though I’m focusing on complaints in this post, I do want to mention that I’ve had a good experience with the game overall.
Except for the following:
Origin/EA/Battlelog/Online Pass
I understand that creating loyalty is one of the key elements of managing a player base, but I play on a console. Having to create an EA account link it to an Origin, and then register an Online Pass via a website getting slammed by new players was a frustrating and unnecessary experience. I pay for Xbox Live – let me put my game in and play. I must say that I do really like Battelog, but the upfront inconvenience in getting started was pretty lame (and seems to be worse for PC players).
Scope Glare
Look, I play Recon. In fact, I play almost exclusively Recon. But, I play Recon – not “Camping sniper.” I spot targets, paint vehicles with the SOFLAM, capture points when I can and drop Radio Beacons. Anyway, in BF3 certain riflescopes have been given a glare effect to help limit the potential for camping. While I understand the mechanic, the glare is ridiculously bright, even in low-light situations. When I’m charging through a pitch black tunnel and I see something that looks like the north star shining out of the darkness, it shouldn’t turn out to be a scope. Needs to be toned down a bit.
Operation Metro CQ
If anyone out there has played Operation Metro in Conquest mode, you’ve probably noticed that the map is insanely unbalanced. Due to the map’s linear design and lack of flank routes, it’s much easier for the Russian team to capture point B and hold it. I would say that the majority of games I join for CQ end with Russia winning and the US losing – getting up and into point B can be quite a difficult feat. It’s also, for some reason, the only map that requires you to pass through one point to cap another – you can’t simply run around B to cap point A and put some pressure on, you have to go through point B first. Needs a little love for the US.
Jets
Jets are cool, I get it. But when I’m in a level with jets, it often seems like they’re playing a completely different game. I’m sure this is a failing of my teammates somewhere along the line, but all I ever see jets do is chase each other around and ignore everything that’s happening on the ground. Somewhere, someone has to have made a tutorial on how jets can apply to the ground game, so please watch it before you jump in the cockpit.
Technical issues
While the release version of Battlefield 3 is nowhere near as buggy as the beta, there are still a significant number of minor glitches and bugs. Texture pop, screen tear and a variety of weird clipping issues have shown up in my matches, with one in particular getting me killed (a two-inch step that has to be jumped over, since the character apparently can’t step). Also, the game often “forgets” which pistol I have equipped. Oh, and let’s not overlook the server issues – I always get a failed connection the first time I try and join.
So that’s a brief rundown of the common Battlefield issues I’m noticing. The list certainly isn’t comprehensive, but it’s made up of what has stood out to me as a player. Like I said before, they’re having a relatively minor impact on my play, but it’s still quite a few issues for a game that was supposed to be one of the best FPS experiences of all time.
If you’re playing Battlefield 3, what problems have you noticed that didn’t make the list?

Ó

The long contest over the legality of former Governor Schwarzennegger's 2005 bill disallowing those under 18 years of age to purchase video games with violent content have now been put to rest.
The US Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional yesterday, on a vote of 7-2, based on the grounds that it defies the "basic principles of freedom of speech" as well as the First Amendment."
So said the ruling: "Video games qualify for First Amendment protection. Like protected books, plays and movies, they communicate ideas through familiar literary devices and features distinctive to the medium. And 'the basic principles of freedom of speech... do not vary' with a new and different communication medium."
"The most basic principle - that government lacks the power to restrict expression because of its message, ideas, subject matter, or content... is subject to a few limited exceptions for historically unprotected speech, such as obscenity, incitement, and fighting words. But legislature cannot create new categories of unprotected speech simply by weighing the value of a particular category against its social costs and then punishing it if it fails the test."
Apart from that, the Supreme Court also dealt with the issue of connecting video games and violent behavior. According to them, they did not find any conclusive link that will put video games responsible for a person's violent act.
"Any demonstrated effects are both small and indistinguishable from effects produced by other media. Since California has declined to restrict those other media, e.g., Saturday morning cartoons, its video-game regulation is wildly underinclusive, raising serious doubts about whether the State is pursuing the interest it invokes or is instead disfavoring a particular speaker or viewpoint."
This ruling of the Supreme Court definitely is a win for gamers everywhere. But inasmuch as it proves that it does fall under the protection of the First Amendment, it also reiterates the need for parents to make sure they give proper guidance to their underaged children, especially when it comes to the content that they are given access to.
It is true, after all, that violence is not necessarily confined only to video games. Open the TV or the Internet and you see it automatically. Even the most classic literary books may contain violence. In fact, just step out of the house and odds are anyone are potentially exposed to violence. This is the reality that our society today faces. For a government to restrict freedom of speech on the sole probability that someone might get bad ideas is to be a step back.
Again, though, no right is fully absconsced of responsibility. So if you choose to let your kids play with games containing violence - no matter the degree - then at the very least, instill in them the clear delineation that video game is fiction, and not everything they will see in media should be adhered to or emulated.
