Wii U controller: More secrets revealed
The next-gen console is more than meets the eye.
With the recent announcment of the Nintendo Network.
Just when you think you know everything about Nintendo's innovative -- and risky -- new Wii U tablet controller, the company throws another factor into the mix.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed this week that the touch-enabled controller will also implement near-field communication (NFC) tech. As an NFC device, the controller will be able to interact with objects equipped with NFC tags.
It's the same set of standards used in some smartphones and smart cards. By touching an NFC-tagged item -- or bringing it in very close range -- with an NFC device, the objects interact via radio communication.
"By installing this functionality, it will become possible to create cards and figurines that can electronically read and write data via noncontact NFC and to expand the new play format in the video game world," Iwata said during an earnings briefing.
"Adoption of this functionality will enable various other possibilities such as using it as a means of making micropayments," he said, a hint at Nintendo's expanding digital distribution plans.
NFC technology has been around for years. But for game development, one interesting implementation of NFC only recently saw commercial release: Activision's console game Skylanders, in which players can buy NFC-tagged figurines, place them on an NFC-equipped pod, and bring those figurines to life in-game.
Iwata described the tech in terms of the Wii U, but did not give specifics on implementation. "The NFC I'm referring to here is the noncontact NFC standard that is compatible with FeliCa and MIFARE, and is expected to be widely used around the world in the near future," he said.

Take that, Windows phones!
Want to play Xbox Live games but don’t have your Xbox nearby? How about an Android phone? According to one developer with a bit of inside information, Microsoft is currently working on an Xbox Live app for Android which will bring many of the service’s functionalities directly to Android users – including the ability to play games from Xbox Live Arcade.
This story actually broke thanks to a job posting on the official Microsoft careers website. The posting indicated that Microsoft had intentions to bring the Live service to Windows Phone, iOS and “other mobile platforms.” A quick bit of calling around, and it was easy to find a developer willing to confirm that Android was on the table. It’s a bit of an odd piece of news, since Microsoft has leaned so heavily on Xbox Live being exclusive to Windows Phone.
However, it’s always good to give your customers more ways to access your service. And while Microsoft isn’t conceding defeat in the mobile wars, they are aware that the Android and iOS markets are trouncing them in terms of mobile game sales. If they want to compete, bringing the Live app to Android and other platforms is essentially the only way to do it.
There’s no information on when we can expect an Android Xbox Live app, but we here at QJ will keep you posted as details emerge.
What do you think of Xbox Live on your Android phone?

We talked yesterday about the mass-suicide threat issued by 300 unhappy workers at the Foxconn plant in Wuhan, China. If you didn’t catch the article, here’s the basic breakdown: Foxconn oversees manufacturing for devices such as Xbox 360s and iPhones, and has been repeatedly in the news for poor wages and terrible working conditions. Earlier in the month, workers threatened to throw themselves off a building due to unfair working practices.
Now that news of this mass-protest is breaking into the mainstream press, Microsoft has issued an official statement regarding the matter. The statement is pretty boilerplate corporate dodging and discusses how Microsoft takes working conditions “seriously” and how the company launched an immediate “independent investigation” of the events in Wuhan.
According to Microsoft, the protests arose as the result of “staffing assignments and transfer policies” resulting from a “regular production adjustment.” However, Microsoft made no mention of the original issue cited by the workers – that they requested a raise and were told to either quit with compensation or continue at their current pay (and that the compensation was never paid to those who chose to leave).
Microsoft also had no explanation for why “regular production adjustments” would cause so much stress to Foxconn employees that they saw mass-suicide as their only option. Overall, it looks like your basic big company “we don’t know what happens in our factories” situation, with Microsoft either feigning ignorance or actually unaware of Foxconn working conditions. It’s hard to tell which is worse.
This story likely isn’t over, and we’ll do our best to bring you information as it breaks. In the meantime, you can read about some of Foxconn’s greatest hits here: Foxconn Plans Safety Nets After 12th Suicide

The success of Epic Games’ iOS slasher shows what can happen if studios spend time creating credible, high quality mobile titles.
We hear a lot of talk about how mobile gaming is the bold future of the industry, but most of the mobile games that actually come out are nothing more than throwaways. Sure, there are a few one-off titles, but mobile developers for the most part aren’t pushing any boundaries.
Epic Games bucked this trend by investing in a top-tier, near-AAA title for iOS devices, one that runs on the Unreal Engine. Infinity Blade is by far the most advanced mobile game we’ve seen developed specifically for the platform, and it looks like Epic’s boldness paid off big.
To date, both games in the franchise have grossed a combined $30 million. Broken down, that’s $23 million from the first game, $5 million for the second, and $2 million for the soundtrack and novel. Epic, in announcing the figures, also stated that they have plans for future iOS games – here’s hoping we’ll continue to see high quality content on our iPhones and iPads.
Do you think these figures will inspire more developers to look at mobile gaming as a place for deep gaming experiences?

The world-renowned museum is replacing its old-fashioned audio tours with 5,000 Nintendo 3DS units, all of which will include custom developed content.
Audio tours are one of the most interesting ways to browse a museum. With headphones in ear, you can often learn much more about the work you’re browsing than you would by wandering around the museum and conducting your own research. It’s certainly more engaging. However, audio tours may be an endangered activity; museums across the world are looking for ways to improve the interactivity of their exhibits beyond simple headphones.
In Paris, for example, the Louvre has recently announced that it will be replacing its existing audio tours with 5,000 Nintendo 3DS devices. The handhelds will contain special content developed by the Louvre with the help of Nintendo, and will serve to help visitors find their way around the museum and interact with the works of art on display. The devices will also come packed with pre-built itineraries that allow users to explore works by theme and age group.
Apparently, only four percent of Louvre visitors take advantage of the current audio tour system – the museum hopes that offering more familiar and engaging technology will encourage patrons to jump deeper into the experience (and spend a bit more money).
It’s an interesting move, one other museums may mimic if it turns out to be effective. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Would you take a 3DS-guided tour through the Louvre?

PS Vita will have fill support for Adobe Flash, if Sony has anything to say about it.
The brawl between Flash and mobile developers has flashed hot over the last few years, with Adobe recently announcing it would discontinue mobile development to focus on HTML-5 solutions instead. The announcement seemed like a victory for Apple, which for years has resisted bringing Flash applications to its phones and tablets. Flash is still a major part of most people’s web experience, and the software enables thousands of internet users to watch videos and engage interactive content.
Sony seems to disagree with Apple on the subject of Flash’s usefulness, and is currently in negotiations with Adobe to bring the service to the PlayStation Vita. On the one hand, it’s a savvy business move that ensures Vita owners will have access to as much online content as possible. On the other, Adobe’s recent shift in focus to HTML-5 hints that Sony’s push for Flash support may have only been savvy if executed five years ago.
Sony execs have confirmed that they’re still working with Adobe to try to find a solution that will work for both companies, but the tone of the interview doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Muneki Shimada, development head of Sony’s division two, indicated that negotiations are ongoing and Sony hasn’t “given up.” Something could be lost in translation here, but it certainly sounds like Sony is dealing with an intransigent group of Adobe developers reluctant to develop their software on another device.
Either way, the future of Flash on both the Vita and on mobile platforms is in doubt. If negotiations are successful, however, Vita would earn one more selling point to help put it ahead of its competitors.
Do you think Flash support is an important feature for a handheld gaming device?

RPG fans rejoice, for one of the greatest of all time is coming directly to your smartphone.
Chrono Trigger is one of those games that has a near-perfect legacy. Simply mention the title to any gamer that lived through the Super Nintendo phase of the industry and you’ll see wistful look come over them, as they think fondly on their hours spent traveling through time and battling ridiculous foes.
If you haven’t revisited Chrono Trigger in a while, you’ll have the opportunity very soon. And you won’t even have to haggle with the guy at your local resale shop – the game is being released to both iOS and Android through the upcoming Square Enix marketplace.
Naturally, the game is being updated to accommodate the touch-screen controls of modern phones, and we’ll just have to wait and see how effectively the game can be adapted. Other Square Enix ports, such as Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy I-III, have been sort of acceptable but sort of not, with the controls mostly doing what you need but still feeling a touch sloppy.
There’s no release date for Chrono Trigger as of yet, all we know is that the game is targeted for release sometime in the next couple of months. The iPhone version is expected in December, with Android version to follow.
Are you ready to hang out with Crono again?

The games giant talks about a special mode found in the latest title in the Resident Evil series, and why gamers will want to play it.
Resident Evil: Revelations is an important title for the Nintendo 3DS. It’s one of the few top-notch games that are headed to the device that aren’t also proprietary brands or based entirely on taking care of fake animals, so Capcom and Nintendo both need to get it right. Though the 3DS has been seeing better sales as of late, strong software choices will help to keep this improvement going.
Resident Evil: Revelations is very much a Resident Evil game, with zombies, monsters and a variety of survival horror traditions, but Capcom is also looking to make the game a little more flexible. They’ve officially announced what they’re calling “Raid Mode,” which is a special game mode in which one or two players are given a set of missions and objectives and graded on completion. The points earned in Raid mode are then used for weapon and character upgrades.
It sort of sounds like the Spec Ops mode in Modern Warfare 2 (and maybe Black Op? I didn’t play that one), where there are short, targeted missions with specific time and points goals.
Here’s what assistant producer had to say about it:
"The story mode in the game is something we created with the single-player experience in mind. I would like everyone to play the game in their bedroom with the lights off and headphones on. That's the way to experience the mode.
At the same time, these games we create, we know they're really enjoyable when you're able to share some of that experience with a friend. Multiplayer is very important and that communication is something that resonates with everyone. We felt putting Raid Mode in, in this kind of structure, allowed us to do that for this game as well.”
Raid mode will function via Wi-Fi and the web and borrows levels from the solo campaign, but we’ll just have to see if it’s a viable multiplayer experience. I think the hard part would likely be finding someone else with a 3DS.
How do you feel about multiplayer in Resident Evil? It’s worked okay in the past, but is it right for the 3DS?

Gameloft drops a brand new FPS title to your phone or tablet, bearing a pretty familiar moniker and dancing with Activision’s legal devils.
If you’re following game news (and you’re reading this, so I assume you are), you’re probably familiar with a little title abbreviated as MW3. Activision’s latest entry in the Call of Duty franchise is going to be a sales juggernaut and there’s not much anyone can do to stop it. Gameloft seems to have another idea: capitalize on the hype with a similar looking and sounding game. The title, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nations, is a fully realized FPS aimed at your Android or iOS device later on this week.
The game features a wide array of multiplayer maps, customizable weapons and more than a few perks that will be familiar to the Modern Warfare crowd, such as Sleight of Hand for quicker reloads and scoping. Modern Combat 3 is set for an October 27th release, though it’s important to remember that Gameloft titles usually drop for iOS devices a few days before they hit the Android market. Either way, you’ll be able to play it eventually.
Modern Combat 3 boasts full online play with stats tracking and leaderboards. The game supports matches of up to 12 players and plays out a lot like Call of Duty, with death match and capture games making up the bulk of the experience. If you’re looking for a console-like shooter on your Android device or your thing that starts with a lowercase “i,” this may be the game for you.
What’s really amazing to me is how Gameloft has managed to thrive without being obliterated by lawsuits. I guess as long as they dance around the copyright effectively, they don’t have much to worry about. It’s not like EA or Activision owns the FPS genre, and most shooters are pretty generic nowadays.
Do you think phones and tablets can provide a satisfying FPS experience? There are some that claim consoles can’t even do it right, I shudder to think of how they feel about the iPad. Even high action Wii games are shrugged off as sloppy.

The developer of the runaway mobile gaming hit has chosen Shanghai as the location for its first international expansion, and the decision was no accident.
If you follow the statistics in the iTunes store or the general mobile games marketplace, it’s pretty obvious that one game is still dominating the rest – Angry Birds. The simple, quick and fun gameplay (so familiar to those of us that played games before we owned phones) caught on something fierce, and has turned Rovio into one of the most powerful forces in mobile gaming.
Now Rovio is looking to expand its opportunities in one of the most rapidly growing sectors in the world – China. The Angry Birds game is already a success in China, with 40 million downloads and counting, but Rovio hopes to capitalize on other opportunities offered by the nation.
Peter Vesterbacka, Chief Marketing Officer for Rovio, had this to say on the potential of the Chinese market:
"Rovio chose Shanghai as the first location for an international office because of its uniqueposition as one of the most creative and technologically advanced cities in the world, and also because Rovio wants to show its appreciation to Chinese fans by serving them even better locally.”
One market Rovio is especially hoping to penetrate is that of the “feature” phone, which is industry speak for any phone that doesn’t run off an advanced OS like Android or Apple’s iOS. According to China Daily, which broke the story, there are over a billion mobile phone users in China and almost all of those users still possess a basic feature phone.
This is a largely untapped market, and jumping in early will give Rovio the ability to line itself up as one of China’s premiere game developers. They’re already talking about acquiring smaller studios, so perhaps we’re witnessing the birth of a titan.
Are you a fan of Angry Birds? I’ve known the joy of smashing a few buildings since obtaining my iPad.

Level-5’s Layton Brothers Mystery Room takes an early change in the development cycle and heads to iPhones and iPads in lieu of the Nintendo DS.
If you like solving puzzles and you own a Nintendo DS, you’re probably familiar with the Professor Layton series. In the games, you play as Layton and his assistant, exploring towns and finding clues while solving a greater general mystery. You also meet your fair share of jerks that refuse to help you unless you can work out some sort of puzzle for them, a hilarious but often frustrating hallmark of the series.
Level-5 had recently announced that a Layton spin-off, Layton Brothers Mystery Room, was being developed for the Nintendo DS handheld. The game is similar in style to the rest of the Layton series, but is instead presented in a full 3D environment. You’ll have to explore various rooms, investigating the clues you find to work out what happened.
Now the company has announced that instead of targeting the Nintendo DS, Layton Brothers Mystery Room is instead heading to you iOS system. There’s no real clarification on which systems will be compatible, but I’m hoping it won’t be limited to the iPhone 4S, since my 3GS is still trucking along and I don’t want to buy a new phone just to catch up with Professor Layton.
Either way, it makes sense that the Layton series would head to mobile platforms; the interface has never been much more than tapping on interesting thing and figuring out what they do.

Apple iOS Devices: iPad 2, iPhone 4S
Android Phones: Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S2
Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
Rockstar notes that this list isn’t complete, and they’ll be releasing a more in-depth list of compatible devices once they’re a little closer to dropping the game on the open market. If you happen to be going to New York Comic Con, you can give the game a test run at the Rockstar booth.
Everyone else will just need to wait until later this fall; there’s no official release but it’s safe to say we’ll see  GTAIII on our iPads sometime during the holiday season.
I’m just amazed at how far we’ve come technology-wise. I remember being amazed at the freedom that game created, and it’s incredible to think that I could have the same experience on a device that fits in my pocket.
Anyone planning on downloading GTAIII to their mobile device, or are you sticking to consoles?

Despite a booming negative reaction from critics and fans around the web, Apple breaks its own record and proves that demand is still strong for its iPhone device.
A couple of weeks ago, the internet was all aflutter with rumors about Apple’s next big product launch. Tech lovers were certain that an iPhone 5 was on the horizon, and eagerly awaited the announcement at Apple’s “Let’s Talk Phone” event. Instead, fans of the brand simply got another iPhone 4, albeit with improved hardware. The iPhone 4S looks the same on the outside as its predecessor, but is twice as fast and boasts a more powerful battery.
Naturally, some fans felt let down by the event, hoping instead for a brand new iPhone to fawn over. Reaction was less than enthusiastic, with may iPhone owners seeing the announcement as another cash grab by Apple. These thoughts didn’t seem to have an effect on sales of the device though; the iPhone 4S is being pre-orders at a rate that eclipses that of any other device.
In the first 24 hours, consumers purchased over one million of the new 4S iPhones. The big numbers aren’t entirely a surprise – many Verizon customers were simply waiting for a new iPhone, since the 4 was relatively dated when it game to their network. Additionally, this is the first time the iPhone has been available on Sprint, so the potential customer base has expanded dramatically.
Of course, many iPhone 4 owners are still going to stay away from the product, as it doesn’t represent a significant upgrade from the previous version. A new camera with 1080p video support, faster processor and dual antenna may simply not be enough to sell another expensive phone to someone that’s had theirs for under a year.
Are you purchasing an iPhone 4S, or are you happy with your current mobile platform?

When you have over 10 million subscribers, you know you're in good shape. That's the number that Konami proudly presented in relation to their social games scattered about different platforms, which, unsurprisingly so, yielded them a massive increase in revenues.
Social games, so it appears, are to be the ones to thank for this success. Specifically, Dragon Collection, which has players going up against each other via smartphones and GREE, has pulled in a strong four million into the Konami fold.
Meanwhile, the other title raking in the big bucks for Konami is the Sengoku Collection, which has so far gathered some two million registered users.
It's a successful venture, as it turns out, for Konami. Social gaming may not be as "hardcore" as some gamers would want it to be, but hey, what's undeniable is that it does make money, and for as long as it does, it's going to be the way devs and publishers will be taking.
As thanks for this humongous support from the fans, Konami will be holding a special event at the Tokyo Game Show next week, to celebrate this historic mark in the publisher's history.

The PlayStation Vita is not about to be left behind in the social networking trend. After confirming that the new Sony handheld will be joining on board the Twitter wagon, we now have here the first look of the app on Vita.
On top of Twitter, it's also confirmed that Facebook and Foursquare will be integrated.
Based on the image released (as seen below), the Twitter interface for the PlayStation Vita basically looks similar to the one on smartphones. Facebook, on the other hand, is said to be donning a brand new look specially designed for Vita.
It won't be till next year, though, that North American gamers can get their hands on this new platform, as confirmed by the SCEA President.

It could leave the field wide open for its rivals to crawl back in, but with a right guy in hand, I think the company will just keep chugging along.
