Adios, World of Warcraft Game Masters!
World of Warcraft is still the industry’s leading paid MMO, but the title has been steadily losing subscribers for the better part of two years. Though the holiday season treated WoW well (the MMO lost only 100,000 players), it’s clear that Blizzard needs to do some serious re-shuffling in order to keep the game profitable for the long term.
And re-shuffling is exactly what the company plans to do. Blizzard has just announced that it is laying off 600 employees, most of which work in customer support. According to the company, 90 percent of the layoffs are occurring in non-development departments of the company. 600 is no small sum—it represents a pretty large chunk of Blizzard-Activision’s total employee number of around 7,300.
Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime had this to say on the topic:
“In order to keep making epic game content while serving players effectively, we have to be smart about how we manage our resources. This means we sometimes have to make difficult decisions about how to best maintain the health of the company. We’re in the process of making some of those hard decisions now.”
In the face of these layoffs, there is still hope for aspiring developers. Blizzard is currently recruiting dev talent for some of its upcoming titles. And the layoffs don’t necessarily mean that Blizz is in financial trouble, just that World of Warcraft is no longer the money-printing machine it once was.
Do you still play WoW? Have you ever interacted with the game’s support staff?

Konami has confirmed that Hudson, the studio behind Bomberman, will shutter its doors this spring.
Hudson is one of the most recognizable developers in the gaming world, responsible for popular games like Bomberman, Mario Party and Bonk. Sadly, Hudson’s reign over fun comes to an end March 1, just over a year after the studio was acquired by Konami Digital Entertainment.
While Konami had originally signaled its intent to keep the studio open and harness its experience in the mobile and social gaming markets, it appears that someone in the company must have had a change of heart. As of March 1, Hudson and all of its properties will be absorbed into the Konami machine – there’s no word on whether the company intends to continue with Hudson’s franchises.
It’s a dark day for fans of simple, fun and cute games – a genre of which Hudson was one of the masters. So pour a drink out for Hudson in March, and fire up some Bomberman to wish them a fond farewell.
Do you think Konami will revive any of Hudson’s franchises?

The wait will just be for a teeny bit more. Dark Souls has been confirmed to be delayed for Japan by developer From Software.
Due to "various reasons", the game will not be making its September 15th launch date in the land of the rising sun. It's not going to be too much of a delay, though, as it's been pushed back only by a week. The new release date will then now be on September 22nd.
They did not make mention on anything about the North American launch, however, but hopefully, it will not be affected by this Japanese delay.
Dark Souls comes out for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, published by Namco Bandai. Back in June, the Dark Souls team opened up a contest for the game wherein fans were encouraged to design their own shield and get the opportunity to win Dark Souls goods. There are also a bevy of bonus contents lined up for all awaiting fans.

It must have been a make or break release for them. News has it that Bodycount developer, Codemasters Guildford, is now set to close shop, just a month after they released the game.
According to reports, the Guildford studio has only 30 days left to operate, finish up whatever it is they have to do, usher the 66 staff affected out the door, and then finally, lock their gates for good.
Said Codemasters in an official statement made to GamesIndustry, "As Codemasters looks to take greater leadership in the racing category, the company is proposing a studio structure that adds resource and strengthens our best-in-class racing teams. The output from the studios on the Warwickshire campus and Birmingham is on the increase with multiple continuing.
Both the Warwickshire and Birmingham studios have won BAFTAs for their critically acclaimed, multi-million selling titles and the company is adding resource to enusre they constantly over achieve in this competitive sector.
Ouch. Suffice to say, the lackluster performance of Bodycount at retail dealt the final blow. Of course, it makes good sense for a company like Codemasters to put their investment where the returns are guaranteed. Unfortunately for the Guildford studio, their performance just wasn't up to par with their mother studio's standards.
Meanwhile, as stated in Codemasters' position, they will be focusing more on the studios working on the racing titles (as this is where the money is, so they say), such as Dirt, Grid, and F1 Online.
Bodycount released in North America just a couple of weeks back to bad reviews, and barely-there presence in the UK charts. To cushion the effect of the shutdown on the staff, Codemasters is encouraging them to instead try their luck in the other studios.

Wrote Wong on Youtube, "After meeting Codemasters at E3 and demoing their new game, Bodycount, they asked us if we would like to make a video around the game! We told them that we would love to since we really enjoyed the game and they gave us access to their massive custom sound effects library."
After much delay, Bodycount finally gets a new release date, August 30th for North America. They recently showed us around the designs for the game via their second dev diary, which you might want to check out of him as well. Bodycount has been pushed back a couple of times already, but this new developer's diary only proves that the game continues to chug along in the development studios.

In this edition of their dev diary, Codemasters Guildford takes us on a trip to show how they came up with their decision for Bodycount's visual style.
Max Cant, Art Director, walks us through first this dramatic presentation of The World. He characterizes the torn depiction of the world, a dying world, as a very odd way to start the game, but it definitely sets the tone effectively.
Game director Andy Wilson then brings us on quick tour around the world, which retained vibrant colors despite the bleak and dreary atmosphere. The locations, in particular, were important in providing and amping up the severity of the feel of the game.
It's all looking impressive, and the thought that obviously went into its creation is definitely something that the development team could be proud of.
Bodycount is set to come out next month, under its new release date,  for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Classics, if anything, are always worth a second look. Codemasters themselves know this very well, and so has expressed that they are looking at bringing back classic seasons to F1 2011.
This was elaborated on by chief game designer Steve Hood during a press event for the said game recently. "When you talk about historical stuff, we really want it," he started.
"I want people to be able to race the '92 Monaco race with Senna versus Mansell as a particular scenario - it would be awesome! I think it's more likely for the first instance to get individual cars and build scenarios around them, rather than building the entire field in a season."
He went on to say that, "I don't think it would be a standalone game because the further away you get, the less likely you are to have a market for that. However, I do think it's a cool thing to include and if it was built on top of the game as DLC, I honestly think Codemasters could make money out of it and gamers would appreciate it."
If it's not going to be a standalone game, then they're obviously looking to bringing it via DLC. "We have those discussions, we've been having them since '10. If Codemasters keep those licenses rolling and the Concorde agreement gets renewed in 2013, I think we'll definitely hit that mark."
Don't get into thinking, however, that F1 2011 is going to be a rehash of sorts, becuse Codemasters has already denied that very allegation. What they did confirm, though, is that the consoles can't handles the game's online multiplayer.
