main_ps3_image_345wThe PS3 scene has a plethora of tools available to get your console running custom firmware or dongles, if that is your thing. Unfortunately, there's always a bad bunch of people who just aim to release tools with the intent of bricking consoles. HwapX and Overx fall into this category with the recent release of their Venix GUI downgrader app.

Sony’s savior is nothing more than PSP: the sequel.
Warning: This article contains – gasp! – my opinion. If your delicate sensibilities can’t grasp reading something counter to your own beliefs, perhaps you should mosey along to something you’ll find easier to digest. Here’s a suggestion.
Read the comments on this site, and you’ll see that I’m a bona fide Sony hater. Curiously enough, I’m also an Xbox, Android and Nintendo hater, depending on the comments you read. Basically, if you ask the readers of this site, I hate everything.
Reader contention aside, it is true that I’ve never been a fan of the Sony brand. This is the result of several factors: the “quantity over quality” approach they’ve always taken towards game development, their absurd comments about the superiority of their consoles despite sales data saying otherwise, and their documented tendency to screw their playerbase.
I believe the Sony Vita will fail. Not on the scale of the Virtual Boy or Jaguar, but in the sense that it will not overtake the Nintendo 3DS, and will not extend Sony’s grasp on the handheld market far beyond what the PSP already provided. This belief comes not from my admitted distaste for Sony, but from the tepid response the device has seen since Japanese launch, the lukewarm reviews offered to the system’s launch lineup, and the unfolding clusterfucks related to the new system that indicate Sony hasn’t learned how to make a system that’s easy to use and fun to own.
Put simply, the PS Vita is too little, too late. And no matter how you feel about Sony, it’s not going to change this simple fact: Nintendo remains the king of the handheld kingdom for the foreseeable future.
Sorry Sony fanboys; it looks like you’re out of luck.

Skyrim already has a ton of mods, thanks to a passionate modding community. However, Bethesda is a company known for embracing modders, and they’re not content to leave modding to the experts. The Skyrim Creation Kit is a single-purpose software designed to assist modders in developing new mods for the game, and to help new modders get into the swing of things.
Bethesda dropped a trailer detailing some of the Creation Kit’s features, as well as how the Kit operates when linked to Steam Workshop. Check it out:

Find out how you can take action against the controversial legislation.
Well, it’s January 18 – you know what that means. Websites across the Internet are temporarily shutting down in protest of the web-threatening SOPA and PIPA legislations working their way through the United States Congress. Wikipedia is down, Reddit is down, and countless other sites have joined in the fray.
We here at QJ aren’t blacking out the site, but we do want to ensure you have the resources necessary to educate yourself about SOPA/PIPA and take action. Sites like ours are just as much at risk as any other, and it is vitally important that you let your representatives in government know how you feel about Internet blacklisting.
For more information on SOPA/PIPA, read this:
A Technical Examination of SOPA and PIPA
To read the actual bills, check these:
Information on H.R.3261 – Stop Online Piracy Act
Information on S.968 – PROTECT IP Act
To contact your representatives, use this:

Remember readers, it takes only a few minutes to write a message, and all of these messages are going to quickly add up. At the time of this writing, several supporters of SOPA have already backtracked due to mass Internet protests – you can help ensure that the two bills are buried for good.

37 days after launch, Skyrim still has major problems on the PS3. Here’s what you can do to make things better.
Skyrim launched with its fair share of bugs and glitches, but none has been as devastating as the PlayStation 3’s save file problem. In short, the size of Skyrim’s save file and the way that file interacts with the PS3’s architecture create a situation in which the system struggles to keep up with your ever-expanding save, eventually dragging gameplay into a slow, laggy mess.
Bethesda attempted to fix the issue earlier this month, but many users are still experiencing the same issue. And while there’s no official fix to the problem (one could still be weeks away), there are a few things that have been reported to help alleviate the symptoms.
If you’re having trouble with Skyrim on your PS3, here are a few things you can try to make it run more smoothly:
Clear Space on Your Hard Drive: This is only effective if you wipe several gigabytes of installed games and is not guaranteed to positively impact Skyrim’s gameplay. Only test it if you’re not worried about re-installing games.
Turn off Auto-Save:  Turning off the auto-save function helps keep your overall save file size down, but probably won’t change issues you’re already experiencing. Still, it’s worth a shot.
Control Your File Size: Skyrim keeps track of everything you do, from leaving doors open to moving fruit around your house. Do what you can to leave the environment as undisturbed as possible and you’ll keep your save file down to a more manageable size.
Restart the PS3: No guarantees here either, but some players report that a quick restart can help limit frame rate issues for long play sessions. Always worth a shot, right?
What’s really amazing about this problem is that it somehow made it into the final version of the game. It’s astounding to think that no tester at Bethesda put enough time into the PlayStation 3 version to hit a bug that’s apparently affecting a very large sampling of the user base. Then again, you can’t always catch everything, right?
Let us know if you have troubles with your Skyrim install, and if any of these solutions help. In the meantime, how should Bethesda make this up to customers?

The debate over a free internet is hitting a fever pitch, as the United States Congress draws closer to a vote.
If you’re not familiar with the Stop Online Piracy Act, you may want to check it out while you can. The bill is currently making its way through the United States government, and while it’s designed to stop piracy and hurt websites distributing other illegal content, it essentially gives the government the ability to block whatever sites it deems unfit or unsafe.
It sets a nasty precedent for government control over the web that could lead to censorship beyond simple piracy; under the current framework, gives the government the ability to determine what sites will or won’t be blocked. So, for example, imagine if the Occupy sites were shut down, or WikiLeaks had been shuttered away. Or, if a user posts illegal content into the comments section of your blog.
It’s not necessarily engineered for that intent, but it wouldn’t take much verbal wrangling to land there. And fans of a free and open web are vehemently opposed to the idea of any government controlling their access to game news, lolcats, and piles and piles of porn.
But big companies support the effort, and a recently-discovered document from the Global Intellectual IP Center shows quite a bit of support for Congress to introduce similar legislature (the document pre-dates the actual bill). Signatures on the document include Nintendo, Sony, and EA – all huge developers that would naturally want to protect their investments.
If you want to learn about SOPA, you can check out the full bill text here: Stop Online Piracy Act. You can also see some of the cool things sites are doing to raise awareness here: American Censorship
It’s easy to see both sides of the argument here – what do you think the government’s role on the web should be?

Though gamers and industry analysts have expressed concerns over the 3DS’s marketability, the handheld is finally making headway after a rocky start.
If you’re one of the people that though the Nintendo 3DS was destined to be a disaster, it looks like you’ll have to put your “Up Yours, Nintendo” shirt away - at least for the next few months. The company has reported that the Nintendo 3DS has moved 1.65 million units in the U.S. since its launch earlier this year, after a much-needed price drop helped to boost sales.
Nintendo is hoping that the 3DS will outstrip sales for its previous handheld, the Nintendo DS, which sold 2.37 million units in its first 12 months. With the holiday season pending, it’s possible they will actually meet this goal.
Another thing fueling the increased demand for the 3DS? Games. Though remakes like Ocarina of Time and StarFox 64 have helped to secure the 3DS a place in the hearts of passionate gamers and early adopters, upcoming titles like Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 are sure to move a few more units. Despite the new titles, Nintendo still has a serious software problem; those two games and Skyward Sword are pretty much all they have going on for the remainder of the year.
It seems like every time Nintendo releases a new console, people argue about whether or not it’s a good idea. The original DS didn’t get much love, if I recall correctly, until the Lite version surfaced, and the now-hilarious quotes from Sony regarding the Wii’s viability should be etched on the back of every PS Move controller shipped. But Nintendo always manages to find a way to make it work (except, you know, that one time) and it looks like the 3DS is here to stay.
Do you have a 3DS? Would you consider buying one based on these new titles?

Demon's Souls may be on its final stretch before it breathes its last sight, but that doesn't mean that it will do so without a fight.
With its second year anniversary coming up, Atlus is giving you one last hurrah in the form of new bonuses, which, for all intents and purposes, make you insert that disc on your PS3 one more time.
First is the Wolrd Tendency feature, which basically sets the difficult level of the game and in some of the special events in-game. For this celebration, all throughout the month of October, Atlus will be introduing the 'Pure White' feature in lieu of the World Tendency, which essentially limits the player's ability to access some areas, given that the world is mostly in a Neutral state.
Of course, those familiar with Demon's Souls will be quick to understand these jargons. Do take note that the Pure White feature will be available until October 17th. For the rest of the month, then, Atlus will introduce Pure Black, further upping the difficulty level of the game and making more hidden secrets.
Just last month, Atlus also further extended the online servers for the game. It's been a fun two-year ride, so join Atlus in this last spur of celebration for their game.

Wii homebrew game developer HunterZ brings us a revival of Crack dot Com's 1995 game, Abuse. The 2D side-scrolling platform title brings us a dark adventure, ironically set against the backdrop of "beautiful lighting, realistic animation" and, not so ironically, "nasty alien-like creatures to destroy."
The Wii port of course had to adopt console-specific adjustments to cater to the Wii's technology. There are a couple of ways to install Abuse Wii on your console: by SD/USB or via Dolphin 3.0.
By Wii:
Abuse Wii can run from either SD or USB. Just copy the abuse folder to /apps/, and the game will detect the game path by determining where boot.dol was launched from. Note that the data/ subfolder must be present for the game to work, and the save/ subfolder must be present if you want to allow settings and saved game files to be created.
After installing on the Wii, the Abuse icon should show up under the Homebrew Channel. Just click it and select Load.
By Dolphin 3.0:
Abuse Wii can also run under Dolphin 3.0, although it doesn't seem to run very well. In order to do this, you must first run the emulator once to create User/Wii/sd.raw. Then, close Dolphin and use a tool like Winimage to inject an /apps/ folder and a copy of the abuse/ folder tree inside of that.
Running
After installing to User/Wii/sd.raw, select Config->Wii->Insert SD Card and Graphics->External Frame Buffer->Real. Then, select Open and browse to a copy of the game's boot.dol file. Finally, select Play to run the game.
For the controls:
Abuse was originally designed for keyboard + mouse on the PC. For the Wii port, these have been replaced with Nunchuk (or Classic Controller Pro held in left hand) + Wiimote.
