Rollerblades, spray-paint and one of the best game soundtracks of all time are headed your way.
If you were one of the lucky folks that got your hands on a Dreamcast before the console imploded and took Sega down with it, you probably had a copy of Jet Set Radio. If not, here’s a quick breakdown: you rollerblade around a city and spray-paint things as you go. That’s about it, but for some reason it’s awesome.
If you never had a chance to play Jet Set Radio, today is your lucky day. Sega has just announced that the game will be making its long-awaited comeback sometime in 2012, in the form of a downloadable title on both PSN and Xbox Live Arcade.
It’s been 12 years since the original title hit shelves, so it will be interesting to see how the game holds up. No information is available on an exact release date, a price or whether the company will be making improvements to the game.
Would you like to see Jet Set Radio HD? Or a straight port of the original?

Bikinis are coming to Soul Calibur. At least Namco is being honest.
Enjoying Soul Calibur V? Of course not – it doesn’t hit shelves until January 31. But just because the game hasn’t been released yet doesn’t mean there can’t be DLC, right? Right. Namco Bandai has announced the first round of Soul Calibur V DLC, set to land at the same time as the game’s European release on February 3.
So what’s in this first batch of DLC, you ask? According to Namco Bandai, the DLC contains “exotic costumes.” Loosely translated, this means face paint, wigs and yes, bikinis. While it seems a little ridiculous to introduce bikinis into a fighting game, this is, after all, Soul Calibur. It’s good to see Namco embracing its target demographic.
This pack is the first of three set for February release, with the second landing February 14 and the third landing February 28. The next two updates contain accessories like clothing, masks and “breast plates,” and all three updates are packed with some classic Soul Calibur music. Each DLC pack is priced at 160 MS Points/ €1.99.
What do you think of day one DLC? It doesn’t seem so terrible when it’s purely aesthetic items.
Also, are you planning on buying any bikinis?

Bioware’s Star Wars MMO is certainly doing well, and is making a case for co-existence.
A third-party research firm has looked into Star Wars: The Old Republic and is prepared to call the game a success, noting that up to 350,000 players were online simultaneously during the game’s first couple of weeks of launch. The firm believes these numbers to be indicative of one important factor: several multi-million user MMORPGs can peacefully coexist in the MMO marketplace.
The analyst speaking for the firm noted that there is likely some subscriber shift from other games, such as Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, but the majority of players are simply playing both games. This is a bit of a change from the usual thought process in the industry, where people often believe that one game or another will “kill” its competitor.
The picture painted by the user numbers simply says that people like Old Republic, and they also like the other MMOs they’re playing. Who knew? In the meantime, SWTOR has more than hit its subscription target and should be a strong presence in the MMO sphere for years to come.
Do you have multiple MMO subscriptions?

An Easter Egg discovered on Back to Karkand’s Wake Island hints at a sequel to DICE’s futuristic shooter.
Battlefield 3’s Wake Island is buried in Easter Eggs. First, users find dinosaurs hidden all over the place (likely a tongue-in-cheek reference to fans wishing for a BF3/Jurassic Park mash-up), and now one intrepid gamer has discovered another, more telling Easter Egg, in the form of “2143” painted on a tank.
Check it out:
Now, this could be mere set dressing, or it could be in place to stir up the rumor mill, but either way it brings questions to light – primarily, is DICE working on a sequel to Battlefield 2142? After all, almost nothing you find in a video game environment is there by accident, so the developers definitely went out of their way to print the numbers where they are. Then again, it could just be an elaborate troll on the part of developers known for having a little fun with their user base.
There’s really no way to tell what’s going on, and DICE has been silent on the issue. Basically, this is just one for the rumor mill until we hear otherwise. Or, we could just use our brains. Why wouldn’t DICE make a sequel to one of its most popular games? It’s not like they’re going to drop Battlefield 4 next year, right?
Right?

Take 2 Boss Criticizes Yearly Schedule Releases
With games like Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty being released every year, who has time for quality.
Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is a force to be reckoned with. A man who has helped push some of the most innovative and creatively awesome titles to the finish line over the years, but over those years has been time...effort...killing hookers, so when Zelnick says that the current model of yearly releases isn't sustainable, he knows what he's talking about.
Big budget Triple-A titles need time and effort put upon them, not just a new coat of paint, a first-draft script and some geographically confused accents. Zelnick was a speaker at the UBS Media and Communications conference and whilst Zelnick didn't specificially name any franchises he had however, just finished discussing Activision's stance in the market place.
Zelnick said that if "you start trying to stamp these products out annually, we don't think that's consistent with a high-quality result", essentially the current Call of Duty model, even with a subscription service, is not sustainable. Zelnick added that if you give consmers something every year like clockwork, they will eventually grow tired of it.
Whilst I would agree with Zelnick, MW3 did pull in over half a billion dollars in sales last month and I tend not to argue with creative figures that I will never ever ever ever ever ever see in my lifetime.
Figures have been coming out about how GameStop and a few other retailers have sold over half a million Premium Subscriptions to Call of Duty's subscription service, Elite and have continued to grow as such. Zelnick queried the viability of such a subscription service, saying he could't tell whether it was relevant yet. "I'm kind of skeptical, frankly. I suspect that we want a different experience on our big screen than we do on our middle-sized screen than we do on our mobile screen, because I think we use them at different times and they mean different things. I do think an intellectual property can thread through, but only if it is really high quality."
That being said users who signed up for Elite crashed the servers twice in the first week of release due to it's popularity and the unbelivable amount of support that Activision had not prepared for. Jamie Berger of Activision has acttually said that "right now, it's an option", when talking about Elite, but he also adds that it might not be in "3-5 years."
So both Activision and Zelnick are not thinking about keeping a community running in the long term; they should team up on something.

A recent dev diary drops a ton of information regarding the next installment in the “chop down trees, plant flowers” franchise.
Animal Crossing is a strange game. On the surface, you wouldn’t think it would be that interesting – get a mortgage, run errands, talk to neighbors and do a ton of landscaping. But something about the game’s cute design and free-roaming nature make it appealing, and Animal Crossing has become one of Nintendo’s biggest exclusive franchises.
Animal Crossing fans are waiting for Animal Crossing 3DS, but details were scant regarding what to expect. However, the developers have just posted a very long, very boring diary that has a few interesting tidbits scattered through it.
Here’s the important stuff:
In Animal Crossing 3DS, you play as the mayor of your city
You can choose what to put in your town, or what not to put in your town
You can paint your house and re-upholster your furniture with custom designs
Pants and shirts confirmed!
There are a few other small details in the video, if you have the time to sit through it and you’re an Animal Crossing fan. For example, Tom Nook will return, but this time as a respectable real estate dealer instead of the man to which you are an indentured servant.

The anticipated PS Vita game contains only three tracks and five cars. Weak.
A few lucky individuals in the Japanese gaming press had the chance to play the PlayStation Vita’s upcoming version of Ridge Racer, and while the reports paint the controls and graphics in a positive light, they also note that the game is pretty limited when it comes to content.
Based on the current version of the game, Vita’s Ridge Racer will ship with three tracks, all of which are remakes from previous Ridge Racer games, and only five different cars. CVG, reporting on the story, notes that there will probably be DLC content, but the in-box game seems alarmingly limited. You can run the courses backwards, but that hardly seems like a substitute for more on-disc content.
The game will be priced below normal Vita games, so that’s some consolation to Ridge Racer fans. Still, it’s not a great precedent for the future of games – slightly cheaper, but limited titles aimed at filling in the blanks with DLC. Most Vita games run around £50, but Ridge Racer will land at about £33 – not necessarily a huge enough difference to justify such a small title.
Also, the game apparently runs at only 30fps? Overall, it doesn’t sound like Ridge Racer is shaping up to be the exciting title some people thought – limited courses, limited cars, and limited frame rates mar what should be a great experience.
Would you buy a racing game with only three courses?

In news that should be surprising to absolutely zero humans, Modern Warfare 3 smashed Back Ops’ record to become the biggest entertainment launch ever.
The numbers aren’t all in for Modern Warfare 3 sales, but after tallying the numbers in the U.S. and U.K., one thing is for sure – it beat the hell out of every game preceding it. MW3, in the first 24 hours of launch an in just two of its release territories, sold an astounding 6.5 million copies.
If you’re keeping score, that’s roughly $400 million in revenue for Activision and plenty more than the $360 million generated by Black Ops or the $310 earned by Modern Warfare 2.
Bobby Kotick, the CEO gamers love to hate, noted that the Call of Duty franchise has now generated more money than the entire Star Wars and Lord of the Rings film franchises (separately). Oh, and if you’re worried about getting bored with Modern Warfare 3, don’t worry – there’s another Call of Duty coming your way next year. I feel like Activision is eventually going to burn people out on the franchise, but maybe not any time soon.
In the meantime, Modern Warfare 3 is having a war of its own over at Metacritic. While the game is hovering comfortably at around 8/10 in terms of critic scores, user scores have pegged it much lower. It’s unclear how many of the 0, 1, and 2 reviews are from people that are simply hating on the game just to do it, or from unsatisfied gamers. The one complaint I’m seeing most often? That the game could have been released as a map pack for Modern Warfare 2.
What do you think of MW3? Are you enjoying your time in the game, or is it nothing more than a fresh coat of paint?

Nintendo is bringing an all-new 3DS handheld unit to stores as they celebrate the 25th anniversary of the game that started it all, The Legend of Zelda.
Another day, another version of the Nintendo 3DS hitting stores. It seems like the news this fall has been packed with different 3DS releases, with colors, bundles and all variety of weird rumors floating all over the web. Today is no different, as Nintendo has announced one more 3DS bundle for the holiday season.
The new bundle features a special edition Zelda 3DS handheld that’s black with gold accents, and will include a copy of Ocarina of Time 3D. You’ll find this very classy-looking bundle on sale in Europe on November 25th, but I can’t imagine that they wouldn’t bring the Zelda bundle to the States as well – Zelda is a pretty big deal over here.

Two teenage killers are sentenced to life in prison after one of the pair confesses the crime to a World of Warcraft guildmate.
Kruse Wellwood and Cameron Moffat were arrested in 2010 for the rape and murder of one of their teenage classmates. The crime, and young age of the suspects, shocked the Victoria suburbs, as each bit of evidence released to the public has painted a horrifying picture of sadistic teens without remorse.
What’s strange, however, is where that evidence came from.
Once news of the girl’s began to take the focus in local media, the boys became increasingly aware of their online presence. Kruse wanted to share his story and thought that World of Warcraft would be the safest place, since he assumed Blizzard didn’t keep a backlog of chats. He confessed using in-game chat, but unfortunately for him Blizz is more than serious about helping local law enforcement and the confession was quickly entered into evidence.
Using the chat and other online evidence, the prosecution had little more to do than present it to a jury. The case is an interesting tale of the way in which digital media affects our lives – by compiling WoW chat logs, search histories and visited web pages the prosecution was able to come up with 1.4 billion sheets of paper’s worth of evidence.
If you want to read about the case (warning: the original article is graphic), you can check out the full piece at Vanity Fair. It tells the story of two awful people and how games helped to bring them to justice.

The Japanese games developer has filed a new patent for a Wiimote touchpad accessory, but it’s not exactly clear what they’re planning on doing with it.
Nintendo is the champion of accessories. From the Zapper to the Wii wheel, nearly every Nintendo console generation has been marked with some sort of game-specific add-on. Just look at the Wii controller section of your favorite big-box retailer if you want to see this in action.
Now, it looks like Nintendo is plotting yet another add-on for the Wiimote, likely aimed at its upcoming Wii U device.
Essentially, you slide this thingamajig onto the Wiimote, and then use it as a touchpad. The device apparently functions through clever manipulation of mirrors, but I’m not a very smart person so I’m having a hard time following the description. Basically, when you touch the pad, the device works, and when you leave it alone it functions like a normal Wiimote.
Nintendo has noted that possible applications include drawing pads or mouse pointers, but I’m still having a hard time wrapping my mind around what exactly their intent could be. As we know, many patents never see the light of day, so this could be one more odd Nintendo technology that doesn’t quite make it to shelves.
What do you think of a Wiimote touchpad? Also, can you make any sense of the diagram?

Ó

Let’s talk about some of the issues with Battlefield 3’s multiplayer, and why it sometimes feel like DICE may have released the game a pinch too soon.
I’m not a huge Battlefield fan. When I say that, what I mean is that I didn’t play the older games and don’t have any extreme allegiance to the brand. I do prefer Battlefield to Call of Duty due to the more realistic sniping mechanics and a greater focus on team play, but I’m not the sort of person that runs around preaching about which game is superior. I like Battlefield games, but I wouldn’t call them my favorites.
I picked up Battlefield 3 on launch day and have since been playing multiplayer whenever I have some down time. I should probably note that I have the Xbox 360 version, so some of the things I’m talking about may or may not be applicable to your personal experiences with the game. I’ve never put the campaign disc in the tray and I doubt I ever will, so I can’t really say much about the single player.
For the most part, multiplayer feels like a well-oiled machine. Most maps seem well planned and I’m getting a fair amount of fun from earning unlocks and capturing points. Though I’m focusing on complaints in this post, I do want to mention that I’ve had a good experience with the game overall.
Except for the following:
Origin/EA/Battlelog/Online Pass
I understand that creating loyalty is one of the key elements of managing a player base, but I play on a console. Having to create an EA account link it to an Origin, and then register an Online Pass via a website getting slammed by new players was a frustrating and unnecessary experience. I pay for Xbox Live – let me put my game in and play. I must say that I do really like Battelog, but the upfront inconvenience in getting started was pretty lame (and seems to be worse for PC players).
Scope Glare
Look, I play Recon. In fact, I play almost exclusively Recon. But, I play Recon – not “Camping sniper.” I spot targets, paint vehicles with the SOFLAM, capture points when I can and drop Radio Beacons. Anyway, in BF3 certain riflescopes have been given a glare effect to help limit the potential for camping. While I understand the mechanic, the glare is ridiculously bright, even in low-light situations. When I’m charging through a pitch black tunnel and I see something that looks like the north star shining out of the darkness, it shouldn’t turn out to be a scope. Needs to be toned down a bit.
Operation Metro CQ
If anyone out there has played Operation Metro in Conquest mode, you’ve probably noticed that the map is insanely unbalanced. Due to the map’s linear design and lack of flank routes, it’s much easier for the Russian team to capture point B and hold it. I would say that the majority of games I join for CQ end with Russia winning and the US losing – getting up and into point B can be quite a difficult feat. It’s also, for some reason, the only map that requires you to pass through one point to cap another – you can’t simply run around B to cap point A and put some pressure on, you have to go through point B first. Needs a little love for the US.
Jets
Jets are cool, I get it. But when I’m in a level with jets, it often seems like they’re playing a completely different game. I’m sure this is a failing of my teammates somewhere along the line, but all I ever see jets do is chase each other around and ignore everything that’s happening on the ground. Somewhere, someone has to have made a tutorial on how jets can apply to the ground game, so please watch it before you jump in the cockpit.
Technical issues
While the release version of Battlefield 3 is nowhere near as buggy as the beta, there are still a significant number of minor glitches and bugs. Texture pop, screen tear and a variety of weird clipping issues have shown up in my matches, with one in particular getting me killed (a two-inch step that has to be jumped over, since the character apparently can’t step). Also, the game often “forgets” which pistol I have equipped. Oh, and let’s not overlook the server issues – I always get a failed connection the first time I try and join.
So that’s a brief rundown of the common Battlefield issues I’m noticing. The list certainly isn’t comprehensive, but it’s made up of what has stood out to me as a player. Like I said before, they’re having a relatively minor impact on my play, but it’s still quite a few issues for a game that was supposed to be one of the best FPS experiences of all time.
If you’re playing Battlefield 3, what problems have you noticed that didn’t make the list?

Ó

Four recently ousted Rare developers have joined forces to create Starfire Studios. And they’re promising to make a new Killer Instinct, right?! RIGHT?!
It would be a steep understatement to say that Rare was my favorite games developer in the late 90s. Donkey Kong Country was, and is to this day, one of my favorite games. I knew every Ultra Combo in Killer Instinct, and I even liked their generally maligned Starfox Adventures (deal with it). Of course, all good things must end, and Rare was snapped up by Microsoft in 2002.
Since then, it’s safe to say the quality of their games has gone somewhat downhill. They still continued to make good games, but unfortunately it just didn’t seem like the demand was there. As a result, Microsoft eventually had to lay off a significant portion of the studio. Now, four of those ex-developers are creating a brand new game company, called Starfire Studios.
Their only announced title at the moment is Fusion: Genesis, noted as a cross between a space shooter and an MMO. The game is headed directly to Xbox Live Arcade, and as a Rare devotee, I can assure you that I’ll be picking it up.
This seems to be an increasing trend in the world of video games – developers are leaving big name studios either of their own volition or as a result of some sort of company decision, and then starting a small-team studio to focus on downloadable titles or mobile games. The future of gaming will involve a lot more small studios, which in turn gives gamers tons more options. Sure, we’re painting this fall as the time of CoD, Skyrim and BF3, but there are going to be dozens of game releases during the same period of time.
Once Fusion: Genesis comes out, maybe Starfire can get to work on a spiritual successor to Killer Instinct. Maybe an open-world game set in the KI universe, starring Fulgore as a down-and-out robot?
What I’m saying is, someone please make another Killer Instinct game.

mfrare1Four recently ousted Rare developers have joined forces to create Starfire Studios. And they’re promising to make a new Killer Instinct, right?! RIGHT?!

ThatOtherPerson offers his apologies for not being too active as of late, but he reassures us that he's still working on his Wii homebrew game, Cubicle Shooter. What better way to appease his fans than to prove it with a new release for it, bringing it to version 0.2.
Cubicle Shooter is a Wii FPS, designed witha  fully destructible 3D environment right on your Wii. Here's what he's been working on Cubicle Shooter thus far.
Changelog:
You can now shoot and hurt the people. They get pushed back when shot.
When the people get too close to you they push you and hurt you.
Both you and the other people bleed when hurt and the blood paints the ground and walls.
Your health regenerates (up to one hundred) but if it ever drops to zero then the game will reset.
There is a scoring system which rewards you with 25 points every time you shoot one of the people and an additional 100 when you kill one of them (they die after four hits).
You can now save the game and load a previously saved game. Saving and loading is extremely slow on Wii.
There have been changes to the controls.
There have been some bug fixes.
As for the controls:
Wii controls:
Nunchuck analog stick = Move
A button = Stop turning
B button = Shoot
C button = Jump
Z button = Crouch
- button = Load
+ button = Save

What better way to appease Cubicle Shooter fans that development is going along nicely than to prove it with a new release, bringing it to version 0.2.
