The Penny Arcade-helmed charity breaks its previous records and raises a huge sum of cash for children’s hospitals nationwide.
Child’s Play is evidence that gamers can do more than simply sit around and smash through digital enemies – every now and then, we can do something nice. The charity, originally the brainchild of Penny Arcade creators Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins, gathers money with the intent of bringing engaging toys and video games to sick kids, a noble cause indeed.
Child’s Play is driven entirely by community donations, and even in harsh economic times, it looks like the community was feeling more generous than ever. The goal set by the organizers was $2 million, which puts the total haul of $3,512,345 well above expectations.
In a statement on the official Child’s Play website, its organizers noted that one should never underestimate the generosity of the gaming community. They also said that they’re feeling good about 2012, especially considering that every year the charity has been active has managed to top the previous one in terms of total donations.
Nice work, Child’s Play! Did any of you make a donation?

Most of the big stuff has come out already, but there are still plenty of new games to play in this week’s edition of “On Shelves.”
It looks like the crazy holiday release schedule is finally slowing down, with most of the major releases already on shelves and waiting to be picked up. But the games industry is an ever-moving beast, and there are still quite a few games scheduled for release in the upcoming week.
Who knows, some of them might even be good! But when an iPhone game is the biggest launch of the week, don’t expect any miracles.
Here’s your list of releases, organized in no way at all:
Infinity Blade II
iPhone, iPad
ESRB N/A
Epic Games
Heavy Fire: Afghanistan – The Chosen Few
PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, 3DS
ESRB Teen
Mastiff
Steel Armor – Blaze of War
PC
ESRB RP
Play Indie
Jaws: Ultimate Predator
Wii, 3DS
ESRB Teen
Majesco Studios
Small World Tunnels
PC
ESRB RP
Days of Wonder
Face Racers: Photo Finish
Nintendo 3DS
ESRB E
Majesco
Combat Arms: Zombies
iPhone
ESRB N/A
Nexon
That’s pretty much it for this week. There are a few other minor titles coming out, but honestly Infinity Blade II is the only thing on this list I had even heard of before today. GameSpot’s list is missing box art for 2/3s of the list.
Looks like this may be the break everyone needed for Skyrim!

DICE apparently confirms that all squad management will occur in the out-of-game Battlelog system, sending many a “Battlefield” fan into a rage.
One of the best features of “Battlefield: Bad Company 2” is the ability to create, join and leave squads during gameplay. In addition to giving players the option of making a quick private squad with friends, the Leave/Join mechanism makes it easier for solo players (like me) to jump into a random game and immediately start assisting the team.
Squad play and management is largely what sets the “Battlefield” series apart from “Call of Duty,” which has always been much more of a chaotic rush for kills than an organized objective-taking experience. According to Daniel Matros, community manager for DICE, in-game squad management is now a thing of the past.
From Twitter:
“Voice chat and squadding will be on the Battlelog side of things”
While this is far from an absolute confirmation that players won’t be able to edit squads during games, it certainly reads that way. Many “BF3” gamers on Twitter are upset about the news, and Matros hasn’t made a move to clear up any possible misconception, so at the moment it looks like we’ll all be making extensive use of Battlelog.
For those out of the loop, Battelog is a web-based stats and social media hub similar in theory to the community site Bungie built for “Halo” fans. You’ll be able to interact with other players, view personal statistics, compare your stats to top-tier players and now, presumably, create and manage your squads. While this certainly doesn’t seem like the most convenient way to conduct an activity that worked perfectly well in the game, we do have to remember that “Battlefield 3” is in beta and things can still change.
On the plus side, there are rumors that Battlelog will be headed to your smartphone, allowing you to check in on stats and edit squads from anywhere you pick up a signal.

Wanting to get your hands on Call of Duty XP tickets? Get ready because Activision is about to send them out.
You can make your purchase for said tickets beginning on July 19th, 2011, at 10AM PST, for US$ 150. Now, the event runs two full days, September 2nd and 3rd, and that ticket gives you access to both days. That should make every penny of that ticket price absolutely worth it.
You must, however, be at least 18 years old, and with a valid ID for proof. Also, there are certain concessions that attendees are expected to understand - and accept - during the event, such as:
Use of their likeness, images, voices, for the filming of the event
Waiver relieving the organizers of liability for any injury that they may sustain in and from the event
Sign a release to participate in certain events at the event
Each person may purchase only up to two tickets, which, by the way, are non-transferrable. So if you get that purchase, make sure you're definitely good to go.
The Monash Computer Games Boot Camp opened its gates to Call of Duty fans in July 9, while Australia launched the qualifying leg for Call of Duty XP yesterday.
Follow the link so you'll see where to make your purchase come the 19th this month.

PAX East 2011 in Boston was such a huge success that the event organizers just can't wait for the next one in 2012. They're so excited, in fact, that they've already set a date for it.
Penny Arcade's Robert Khoo divulged the statistics, via Big Download, that this year's Boston event pulled in a whopping 69,500 attendees. That's a huge jump from the 52,290 folks that trooped to last year's event.
"The venue we have this year is massive - it's legitimately 2-3x larger than last year's venue, so the amount of breathing room was fantastic. I didn't hear a single complaint about overcrowding. I never thought I would see the day."
Because of this success, they can't wait to bring gamers the next iteration of the annual event. For the PAX Prime event later this year, it will be happening on August 26th - 28th. Meanwhile, the next PAX East event for 2012 will be commencing on April 7th - 9th next year.
If you were hoping for an overseas event, however, this is what Khoo had to say: "Haha, no sorry - there really isn't anything to say! We look at all sorts of places to see if it's right for PAX. I think the UK rumors got picked up because it's just so... Out there."
Congratulations to the PAX team for pulling off a successful event!
