Job listing notes that “you must be prepared to dramatically over-promise.”
Lionhead Studios, the company behind the ground-breaking Fable and less-than-groundbreaking Fable II and Fable III, is apparently ready to jump back into the mix. The studio is currently on the market for a lead developer, one who can contribute to a “cutting-edge, genre-defining” game.
The job listing also notes that the developer will be working directly Peter Molyneux on a true AAA title. Lionnhead hasn’t made any big announcements regarding upcoming titles, but the job listing indicates that they’re at least moving forward on some sort of next-gen project, one that Molyneux will likely hype to near-oblivion.
Lionhead’s website is currently offline while the studio gives it a “fresh new look.” When the site comes up in six days, eight hours and 29 minutes, perhaps we’ll have a little more information on what exactly Molyneux and his team are up to.
Maybe we’ll even get one of those classic Molyneux speeches about how his next game is so amazing it makes computers explode with ecstasy.

The head of Valve speaks on the dangers of treating customers like enemies.
It’s hard to find a company with a better reputation than Valve. Thanks to the company’s transparency, ownership and ease of communication with players, most gamers would consider Valve and its Steam service a strong model for how a gaming company should operate.
One of the big reasons that Valve is so well regarded is its accessible and honest leader, Gabe Newell. When Newell spots a problem, he owns up to it, as he did last week over the Steam hacking debacle. And when he’s not apologizing for mistakes, he’s busy being the one sane voice in a crowd of crazies.
Speaking with Penny Arcade, Newell had a few interesting things to say on the subject of DRM. For starters, he believes that if customers aren’t happy with a service, the company that owns it is doing something wrong. He also dismisses the idea of DRM, stating, “It’s a really bad idea to start off on the assumption that your customers are on the other side of some sort of battle with you.”
Newell claimed that many developers are actually losing sales by bundling restrictive DRM packages with their products, and that the sales lost to piracy would be far lower than the sales lost due to annoying DRM. It all comes down to value for the player—Newell notes that creating value is more important that stopping players from moving their games from device to device.
Now, if only the rest of the industry would follow along. Ubisoft, I’m looking at you.

EA notes that vitriol from players regarding its unnecessary Origin software is on the decline, and asks for a two-year window to make the service useful.
Origin is a piece of shit. What’s worse, it’s an unnecessary piece of shit. What Origin stumbles through, Steam already had mastered. And the only reason Origin even exists at this point is EA stripping its games from a far superior digital distribution platform and forcing a proprietary service down everyone’s throats. It’s nothing less than a digital coup, and an ugly one at that.
Origin has, naturally, seen its fair share of hate. Most of this hate stems from feelings like those mentioned above, with a bit left over for the terrible customer service offered by the platform. However, EA sees a few rays of light poking through the hate clouds. Chief operating officer Peter Moore, who is largely responsible for the existence of Origin, believes that the software is just a couple of years away from being truly wonderful.
Moore stated that EA is looking for ways to make Origin more social and more interactive, as opposed to just a pipeline for the company to shovel games at players (at exorbitant prices). He also noted that criticism of the platform has mostly died down, and that gamers are learning to embrace Origin’s special brand of online functionality. Hey, when you make something mandatory, how can people not learn to use it?
His comments are actually sort of hilarious—Moore claims that the healthiest decision for the industry is providing players with a way to “shop around” on various services, while his company simultaneously pulls all of its games off competitor’s platforms. Nice one, EA. Regardless  of the hypocrisy, Moore does make a smart point when he says the service needs a couple of years; there’s no telling whether Origin will be better or worse in 2014.
What do you think of Origin? Do you see it as one more gaming tool on your PC, or an unwanted and forced intrusion by a greedy company?

Want to know what Bioware has planned for Star Wars: The Old Republic?
Star Wars: The Old Republic has only been live for about a month, but that doesn’t mean Bioware doesn’t already have plans for future content. And in the great tradition of MMOs, the foundation for some of that content has already been laid, deep in the files of the game.
A few dedicated SWTOR have been working round the clock to pull as much information as possible from the hidden secrets buried in The Old Republic, and their efforts have turned up quite a few interesting tidbits.
Here’s what they’ve discovered:
New daily quests for 50s, set on Corellia
A new companion, named HK-51
New Flashpoints – Lost Island and Titans of Industry
New planet – Varl, with new operations
That’s just the beginning. And while most of this content is expected to go live in either patch 1.4 or 1.5, it’s entirely possible that none of it will go anywhere. Data-mined information does not a guarantee make.
You can keep up with all of the latest info leaks over at TORHead. In the meantime, what would you like to see added to Star Wars: The Old Republic?

Bethesda releases full patch notes for their latest Skyrim update, now in the certification testing.
It seems like it’s been forever since the launch of Skyrim, but millions of gamers are still spending their free time slaying dragons and “accidentally” murdering their followers. And, as is customary with Bethesda games, Skyrim still has a fair few issues interfering with players’ ability to fully enjoy the game.
The company is more than aware of Skyrim’s issues and has been working non-stop to get them fixed –especially the ever-present PS3 bug that makes the game nearly unplayable for some users. Recent rumors indicate Nintendo may be looking to port books and magazines to its upcoming Wii U console.
We already know that Nintendo is working on an app store for the Wii U, however we don’t really know what sort of apps to expect. It’s obvious they’ll be incorporating as many media options as possible in an effort to expand the appeal of the device, and one rumor in particular indicates that the company may be looking to E-Readers as its next field of play.
Nintendo is apparently reaching out to certain iOS developers and requesting that they develop software for the Wii U – one developer in particular notes that the company is focused on bringing newspapers, magazines and user manuals directly to the devices’ tablet-like controller.
If true, it’s a sharp idea on the part of Nintendo – tablets are an incredibly hot market, and the likely low price point for the Wii U will make it the perfect entry-level device for both gaming and tablet multi-tasking. Of course, this is all still in the rumor phase; anything can happen when it comes to Nintendo.
My favorite part of the rumor: digital delivery of Nintendo Power. I used to love that magazine back in the Super Nintendo heyday; it would be fun to re-up with a digital subscription delivered directly to my Wii U.

Did you guys know that people like Call of Duty games? Because Activision is reporting huge profits for the latest entry in the series.
Okay, I promise this is the last news post about how much money Modern Warfare is making. Honestly, I wasn’t even going to post it, but it’s just such a big deal there’s really no way to avoid it.
Activision has reported that Modern Warfare 3 has raked in an astonishing $1 billion in its first 16 days of launch. That’s faster than Avatar, which took 17 days to break a billion after it was released in 2010. The published has also reported that there are over 30 million people playing one version of Call of Duty or the other, making it one of the biggest gaming communities in the world.
As the publisher notes, the CoD community is now larger than the populations of New York, Paris, Madrid, Tokyo and London. Beat that, Battlefield! They also boasted that CoD Elite, the barely-functioning online service launched with MW3, has landed six million players. They compared this figure to sign-ups for Hulu, Xbox Live and Netflix, but I’m not sure that’s a fair comparison considering most of those companies were doing something completely new rather than piggybacking a service onto a successful product.
Like I’ve said before, I’m a Battlefield guy. But, any big success should be celebrated, so hats off to the folks at Infinity Ward for making such a popular game. And also to Activision, for an unmatched marketing blitz.
Are you one of the 30 million Call of Duty players?

American Nintendo President sees console for every demographic.
What about the Western Rabble Rouser console, how's that coming along?
Nintendo have had the family market cornered for years. Cornered and had a bright ribbon attached around it's neck which pulls so tight that money falls out of their pocket in droves, and whilst, other video game consoles have tired to put their bucket under their pockets, it seems that Nintendo's American President Reggie Fils-Aime, has plans to make sure the momentum keeps going when it comes to Nintendo's continued success.
Despite the postiing of a the company's first Japanese loss in over two decades, the American head says that with having four systems on the market, Wii, U, the DS and 3DS, isn't too bad and that they can have a share of the same market space for some time, as long as they appeal to the right markets. The right markets according to Fils-Aime, is the core gamers, lower-income homes and the classic, small children.
Of course, with Christmas coming up, all of those are taken care of on Nintendo's consoles,  Fils-Aime says that Nintendo thinks the "DS is going to sell well" this holiday and that it's going to "appeal to a different consumer," adding that the christmas memory of buying the first console for your kid might be an idea this christmas.
Reggie talked with Time Magazine adding that the Wii has really gone for a core market but also trying to hit a lower income bracket with the Wii being less than $150 for the first time, this year. He notes that the console being $200 or even $250, may have been "out of their reach" but now it looks like it might be at the right price.
Regarding the Wii U and the 3DS, Reggie talked mainly about the core gamer audience and how the people who buy the "Wii hardware today" may be different from the people who buy the "Wii U in the future." He also noted he was aware the lack of pricing for the Wii U had been a concern for some people, but that you would be expecting different things from the Wii U and therefore would need different pricing.
That being said the Wii U would be a dedicated experience, but regarding this holiday season's spending, we already know that Microsoft slaughtered the competition over black friday and other than my girlfriend's family of non-gamers, I don't know anyone who doesn't own a Wii...Reggie might be hopeful but not stupid, I think it might be high-time for the Wii U to be rolled out and let Nintendo rest the Wii's flag for now.
It was a great console, some memorable games and experiences. Remember the first time you played Wii Sports with friends and family and how amazing it was, till someone said that the swinging in Tennis wasn't matching up...yeah good times.

Rocksteady has addressed the DX11 issue that made the game unplayable on PC, but only for some players.
Poor Arkham City. It’s had a rough run in recent months – despite launching to rave reviews, the game has been marred by technical difficulties, especially when it comes to the PC. We reported a couple of weeks ago that Arkham City wasn’t necessarily working correctly with DX11, and at the time Rocksteady’s solution basically boiled down to “turn off DX11.”
But, thanks to Steam, we can now see that Arkham City has been patched by its developers, and that the DX11 issue should be mostly resolved – assuming you play on a 64-bit system. If your computer runs on a 32-bit version of Windows 7 or Vista, you’re still going to need to use DX9 until Rocksteady can get the next patch out.
Here are the patch notes, courtesy of PC Gamer:
Performance / hitching issues have been greatly improved for running in DX 11.
An issue with players running out of Video Memory or encountering a Rendering Thread Exceptions has been address. This was primarily affecting 32-bit Operating Systems.
A progression block after defeating Ra’s Al Ghul has been fixed. This was issue occurred primarily on lower end computer setups and described as Batman not readying his Reverse Batarang.
A crash that occurred when scrolling between the Character Bios and Arkham City Stories has been fixed.
A crash that occurred when selecting “Press Start” immediately when available at the Title Screen has been fixed. The issue was described as crashing/hard locking around the DLC (Downloadable Content) check.
Have you downloaded the patch yet? How’s it working out for you?

Tomorrow’s 2GB Battlefield patch brings bug fixes, balance changes, and a few other goodies.
We knew that a Battlefield 3 patch was on the way, and we knew that it resolved a few glaring issues (like the tactical light – get it!? Glaring?!), but the full extent of the patch wasn’t really clear until the full patch notes went public. After a quick glance through, it’s obvious DICE is serious about keeping their game as balanced and fun as possible.
The bulk of the 2GB patch is content for the upcoming Back to Karkand DLC pack, but the rest is all adjustments to existing game mechanics. Among the fixes? A big nerf to mortars, a buff to jet cannons, spawn point adjustment and a ton of tiny tweaks to weapons. Here’s the full list of changes, courtesy of Battlelog:
Bugfixes
• Fixed a problem with spawn timer now showing blue border on startup and lost spawn point
• Fixed a problem where player who joined queuing on End of round got spawn screen stuck on screen, but unable to do anything with it until next round loaded
• Fixed a problem where camera would change to 3rd person on killcam when killcam was turned off in server settings
• Fixed stat references on several dogtags
• Fixed for surveillance ribbon not counting TUGS
• Fixed a missing combat area lines on the minimap for Grand Bazaar conquest small
• Moved a tank spawn in US base on Caspian Border so it would not be destroyed by a falling tree
• Fixed a problem where placing C4 with the russians soldier was playing US faction VO
• Fixed a problem where TV guided missiles could be shot into its own helicopter and destroy it
• Fixed a problem when attempting to fire lock on weapons without a target
• Tweaked the chat, it should now be a bit easier to read
• Fixed several vehicles that did not properly shoot rockets and guns towards their predictive sights
• Fixed the G17 Supressed Laser not working properly

• Increased the range and FOV for designating targets with the SOFLAM and vehicle Laser Designators.
• Decreased the effectiveness of 12g FRAG ammo when equipped on semi-automatic and automatic shotguns.
• Slightly Increased the power of Fighter Jet Cannons against all vehicle targets, especially Helicopters.
• Decreased the power of Miniguns against Jets and Helicopters.
• Increased the power of Stingers against Jets.
• Flares reload times for Jets and Helicopter Gunners have been increased.
• Tweaked the AN94 so its burst fire better conveys the real world advantage offered by this weapon.
• Added Single Shot to the AN94 as an available fire mode.
• Slightly increased the recoil on the M416 and removed the Burst Fire mode (this weapon incorrectly had burst fire, which was not authentic).
• Tweaked the spawns for TDM on Kharg Island, Grand Bazaar, Caspian Border, Seine Crossing, Operation Firestorm, Damavand Peak and Noshahar Canals
• Moved a tank spawn in US base on Caspian Border so it would not be destroyed by a falling tree
• Tweaked the Gas station Capture area on Conquest on Caspian Border
• Tweaked the max vehicle height on Noshahar Canals
So there’s that. See anything you like?

LA Noire creator to make Whore of the Orient
Brendan McNamara is heading to the Orient.
LA Noire is still one of my favourite games of the year. Seemlessly blending the classic point and click adventure style with a brand new stylised action and some amazing graphics, which all play into the gameplay carefully. Sure the game does have a few drawbacks, but not enough for Brendan McNamara to stop working.
His next game is going to be called Whore of the Orient, which may or may not go through title changes before the game even starts to be developed. The game will be developed with KMM, an Australia studio owned by George Miller, who you may know as the director of those films about penguins or about Mel Gibson in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
Speaking of Mad Max, McNamara will also be developing a game based on the fourth film, which has been in development hell for over a decade, with the subtitle Fury Road. Miller says he is finally doing the film "after years of resisting the impulse" and also three family friendly films that have grossed over a hundred million dollars worldwide. Miller has gone on the record saying  "Multi-platform, that's the thing", explaining "Create once; publish many times, on multiple platforms. You create a world and then you go in to all the different platforms - your iPhone, your iPad, on the net," I doubt he's talking about ARG, but merely just multiple ports.
But that's not the only reason, recently in Australia, our culture and arts funding just went through the roof. Whilst it isn't helping to fund theatre all too much, the future is in video games and KMM's co-found Doug Mitchell couldn't be more pleased to immediately go forward with the two games, thanks to "government support."
Mitchell also noted that whilst Australia doesn't have a big games sector, the "potential in the video games sector is massive," he says. He also notes that it's a 60 billion dollar industry that's fast-tracking towards 90 billion. He compares the film industry with costs being around 170 million with more to advertise it and the fact games can be made at 10% of the budget and marketing is often word of mouth.
Mitchell mentioned LA Noire saying that they sold 3 million units with $135 million net revenue, nice to see to being able to use that dead horse after everyone's beaten it to death. Whilst there's not much info on the Orient, McNamara spoke with Eurogamer last month saying "It's pretty interesting. It's one of the great untold stories of the twentieth century," he said. "So I think it'll be good."

Today must be “Official Update Your Game Day,” with yet another high profile title getting patched.
Whew, today has been crazy. Skyrim, World of Warcraft and EVE are all getting patched or updated today, and apparently so is Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception. I guess Tuesday is a universally accepted day to patch games, probably due to low overall traffic in the middle of the week. Who knows?
Whatever the reason, Naughty Dog has chosen today to deliver your eagerly anticipated Uncharted 3 patch. The game update addresses a few issues, such as fixing a motion blur problem and preventing multiplayer medal streaks from resetting, but the most important change is likely the addition of new “Alternate Aim Settings.”
The new aim settings were introduced into the game as the result of player feedback. Some players felt that aiming in Uncharted 3 had changed slightly from Uncharted 2, and not for the better. Naughty Dog actually brought a few fans into the studio to work with different  builds and provide more detailed feedback, and working with that and general player comments added the Alternate Aim Settings option to the game. You’ll just have to try it to see if it works for you.
They’ve also added a movie cut scene viewer, though I thought that’s what Uncharted was to begin with.
You can check out the full patch notes here or just download the patch to your PS3 if you’d rather live dangerously.
Be sure to let us know what you think of the new aiming system.

Here comes the next big non-expansion content update for one of the most popular MMOs in the known universe.
World of Warcraft is in a constant state of flux. Even between expansions and major content patches, the developers are always making tiny tweaks or fixing slight issues. Today’s 4.3 patch falls in the “major” category, introducing a new raid instance and dropping some brand new features on World of Warcraft players around the globe.
Here’s a brief rundown on some of the things you can expect to see in World of Warcraft Patch 4.3: Hour of Twilight:
Three new small-group instances
End Time
Well of Eternity
Hour of Twilight
Dragon Soul raid
Void Storage – to help you free up your bank
Item Transmogrification – the ability to change the appearance of weapons and items
Legendary Daggers: Fangs of the Father
Huge XP Reduction from 71 to 80
And a bunch of other stuff. You can see the full patch notes here: Patch 4.3
Are you excited about the changes found in 4.3? The XP reduction seems nice; maybe my sister will finally get to 80.

The anticipated PS Vita game contains only three tracks and five cars. Weak.
A few lucky individuals in the Japanese gaming press had the chance to play the PlayStation Vita’s upcoming version of Ridge Racer, and while the reports paint the controls and graphics in a positive light, they also note that the game is pretty limited when it comes to content.
Based on the current version of the game, Vita’s Ridge Racer will ship with three tracks, all of which are remakes from previous Ridge Racer games, and only five different cars. CVG, reporting on the story, notes that there will probably be DLC content, but the in-box game seems alarmingly limited. You can run the courses backwards, but that hardly seems like a substitute for more on-disc content.
The game will be priced below normal Vita games, so that’s some consolation to Ridge Racer fans. Still, it’s not a great precedent for the future of games – slightly cheaper, but limited titles aimed at filling in the blanks with DLC. Most Vita games run around £50, but Ridge Racer will land at about £33 – not necessarily a huge enough difference to justify such a small title.
Also, the game apparently runs at only 30fps? Overall, it doesn’t sound like Ridge Racer is shaping up to be the exciting title some people thought – limited courses, limited cars, and limited frame rates mar what should be a great experience.
Would you buy a racing game with only three courses?

A huge patch to the incredibly difficult game adjusts some stats, item drops and other details.
Dark Souls is quickly earning a reputation as one of the hardest games ever made. Every post or update I see about it makes some sort of passing mention of its difficulty. Not having played Dark Souls, I can’t comment on whether or not it’s truly difficult, but it certainly seems so from where I sit.
Thanks to a large patch, released yesterday here in the States, Dark Souls may have just gotten a tiny bit easier. The patch is also live in the U.K., but only for the PS3 version of the game.
The patch addresses a number of concerns by fixing glitches, improving targeting, and upping the rate at which items drop. The patch notes are long, but here are some of the greatest hits:
Enemy soul drops improved
Covenant and Equipment Enhancement item drops improved
Paying for sins is cheaper
Lock-on improved
Freezes fixed
Stuck issues resolved

Microsoft’s slick new Xbox dashboard has an official release date, and it’s very, very soon.
The original Xbox 360 dashboard left a lot to be desired, but it had a certain charm. Over the years, Microsoft has tuned and re-tuned the dashboard to make it easier to use and, more importantly, easier to sell you things like movies, apps and downloadable content.
The latest version of the dashboard, now titled “Metro,” is scheduled for launch December 6th and brings with it a whole slew of new features and options.
The dashboard boasts full Kinect support, Bing voice search, Beacon-marking, sharing of achievements to Facebook and plenty of other new features. Additionally, expect to see the early versions of Xbox TV or whatever they’re calling it, with a variety of service providers bringing their programming directly to the dashboard (for a small fee, of course). Microsoft updates the providers based on contractual obligations and regions, so look around for specific info regarding what you’ll actually be able to access.
One major point in the update notes: the addition of cloud saving for all Xbox Live Gold members. The benefit here is that you can back up your game saves to the Microsoft cloud, allowing you to share them across consoles – a much-needed feature, especially as our poor little HDDs get filled up.
What do you think about the new features coming to the dashboard? Is there anyone out there that’s been playing with the beta and has a few comments regarding its functionality?

DICE is looking to clear up a few bugs and make the interface more bearable with the game’s first major update.
I put a couple of hours into Battlefield 3 every week, or at least I did before Skyrim came out. I wouldn’t say that BF3 is a bug-filled mess, but it certainly has its fair share of graphical glitches and interface tomfoolery. DICE is more than aware of many of the issues plaguing gamers and is hard at work on a patch, which will be pushed live sometime today.
There are a ton of things being updated, adjusted or resolved with this new patch, including:
Load time improvements
Multiplayer/Co-Op crash problems
High-speed mouse updates
Grenades being thrown now drop if killed
Sound updates for weapons, swimming, and other stuff
Tons of weapon balance adjustments
Changes to the way you join squads
The patch notes are very detailed and you can check them out in full at Battlelog. According to the information provided, the client-side changes are only going live for PC owners, and the rest of the server-side changes go live for all consoles. Like I said, look for the patch today.

Epic Games has reportedly fixed a widespread issue with the game randomly freezing in the game’s latest Live patch.
As we find ourselves in the middle of this insane launch schedule, it’s easy to forget some of the huge games that have already come and gone this season. Gears of War 3 has been out since October, and despite moving millions of copies seems to have shifted off the minds of gamers eagerly awaiting their next fix.
But quite a few people are still playing GoW 3, and some of those folks have been reporting a serious problem with the game.
Apparently, some Gears players were experiencing random game freezes of varying lengths – sometimes the game would freeze for a few moments, other times it would crash entirely. Not exactly the kind of thing you want to happen right in the middle of an intense Locust confrontation. Epic Games pushed a patch through late last night that seems to have resolved the problem, so if you’re a Gears owner you should go ahead and get it downloaded.
Beyond the bug fix, Epic added a spectator mode for private versus matches, eased up the requirements for a couple of medals, and balanced a few other things. They’ve also fixed a few bugs – you should check out the full list here: Gears of War 3 Title Update 2

If you love playing Nintendo 64 games on your modded PSP, you should probably pick up this newest revision of Daedalus X64.
Daedalus X64 is the only piece of software that can turn a PSP into a Nintendo 64 emulator. When using Daedalus with a hacked PSP, you can access hundreds of games released during that console generation, as well as more than a few homebrew titles that were developed to run along the same requirements.
The developers of Daedalus have pushed a new update today, titled Daedalus X64 rev .736. It’s not really a critical update, but if you’re the type of person that likes to keep your software updated, you should probably pick it up.
According to the version notes, rev.736 represents a few minor improvements to the software, modifying the graphics library and implementing full S2DEX support. The only modifying I know how to do is putting an R4 card in my DS, so if any of you hardcore homebrew people sees something I don’t, let me know in the comments and I’ll add it to the posts. PSP firmware isn’t really my area of expertise.

Rockstar announces the 10th anniversary edition of its old-school classic, remastered and headed directly to your mobile phone.
It’s hard to imagine, but Grand Theft Auto III, the game generally recognized as revolutionizing what game developers could do with an open world, has been out for 10 years. For a bit of perspective, the number one song in 2001 was Independent Women Part 1, by Destiny’s Child. Beyoncé was still a person in a band when GTAIII hit shelves.
Anyway, this post isn’t about Beyoncé. It’s about Rockstar’s most recent announcement – in celebration of the tenth anniversary of GTAIII, they’re releasing the game not to consoles or direct download, but directly to mobile platforms.
Here’s the currently supported device lineup:
Apple iOS Devices: iPad 2, iPhone 4S
Android Phones: Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S2
Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
Rockstar notes that this list isn’t complete, and they’ll be releasing a more in-depth list of compatible devices once they’re a little closer to dropping the game on the open market. If you happen to be going to New York Comic Con, you can give the game a test run at the Rockstar booth.
Everyone else will just need to wait until later this fall; there’s no official release but it’s safe to say we’ll see  GTAIII on our iPads sometime during the holiday season.
I’m just amazed at how far we’ve come technology-wise. I remember being amazed at the freedom that game created, and it’s incredible to think that I could have the same experience on a device that fits in my pocket.
Anyone planning on downloading GTAIII to their mobile device, or are you sticking to consoles?
