Sound Off: Best Original Game 2011

We’re seeing quite a few top ten lists, but there’s one problem - we’ve played most of these games before.

2011 is over and every gaming publication on earth is counting down through the best games of the year. Most have posted some sort of top ten list detailed what they believed to be the strongest titles of the year, and for the most part the lists make sense – Portal 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution , Skyward Sword, etc.

I just have one problem – nearly all of these games are sequels or continuations of a franchise. In a year of blockbuster sales and enormous launch events, we’ve been treated to very little in the way of original titles. So, here’s what I want to know, QJ readers:

What ORIGINAL title do you believe was the best of the year?

For reference, here are some of the non-sequel games that launched in 2011:

You’ll note that most of the originality in the industry is coming from the indie circuit. Big developers simply aren’t taking risks on new properties. Anyway, what’s your pick for best original game 2011?

So This Happened: Gamer Breaks DDR World Record

In a slow news week, there is only one hope: an insane gamer dancing his heart out for 16 hours straight.

Apparently, there’s such a thing as the “Longest Video Games Marathon on a Dance/Rhythm Game” world record. And, apparently, there’s such a thing as “person who wants to hold the record for longest video games marathon on a dance/rhythm game.” This person, ladies and gentlemen, is Alexander Skudlarek.

Skudlarek is now the world record holder for the ridiculously long-titled record mentioned above, a title he earned for playing Dance Dance Revolution for a whopping 16 hours and 18 minutes straight. It may not sound like that much time compared to some Skyrim or WoW marathons, but you have to remember –DDR is a dancing game. How many of us have ever danced so hard?

The record was set back in October, but no one really knew about it until this week, when Skudlarek contacted Destructoid and helped save both them and us from an incredibly slow news day.

It may seem silly but hey, it’s a word record – I sure don’t have any to my name. So we at QJ would like to offer belated congratulations to Alexander.

Never stop dancing, buddy.

Vita Sales Slump in Second Week

Despite getting off to a roaring start, the PS Vita has completely tanked at is rolls beyond the first seven days.

In Japan, PS Vita certainly made its presence known during its launch week. The device moved over 320,000 units – putting it on par with first-week 3DS sales and far outstripping the initial haul of the original PSP. But the momentum doesn’t seem to have carried beyond early adopters, as the device managed to sell only 72,000 units in its second week.

Now, 72,000 devices sold certainly isn’t a terrible number, but it’s worth noting that the Vita was outsold by the 3DS, Wii, PS3 and original PSP – not a great sign for a device that’s supposedly the next handheld revolution. Gamers just aren’t flocking to the system as Sony might have hoped.

The software numbers aren’t any better, with not a single Vita game breaking the top 20. Of course, it’s hard to get a bead on exactly how well Vita games are selling, since many are available for download through PSN and Sony has yet to release their sales figures.

Vita is still young and we’ll have to see how the whole thing plays out, but dropping from 320,000 sold to 72,000 sold in just one week (in the middle of the holiday rush) certainly isn’t a good omen.

Myst 3D is Coming

One of the most beloved PC games of all time is heading to the Nintendo 3DS.

Did you live through the 8-bit revolution? Were you one of the first “computer” gamers? If so, you probably remember Cyan’s incredible CD-ROM title, Myst. The game, which featured an explorable, pre-rendered world packed with puzzles and mystery, was an instant hit – pretty much everyone had a copy of the game at one point or another.

Myst is now poised to make a triumphant return, in the form of a port to the Nintendo 3DS. The new game, titled Myst 3D (duh), will feature all of the content found in the original game, as well as the RIME Age extras added to the game in its 2000 re-release. The port will stay true to the game’s roots, with the only major changes being its adaptation to 3D.

Myst 3D is slated for March 27, 2012. Do you think the game will work well for the 3DS, or is Myst a game that belongs on PCs? Solving some of the puzzles on the 3DS screen doesn’t exactly sound appealing to me.

Associated Press Names Portal 2 Best of 2011

AP has finished its list of the best games of 2011, and it’s surprisingly good.

2011 was, from any way of measuring, a massive year in the world of video games. We saw tons of excellent indie releases and more AAA chart-burners than any reasonable person could have time to play. Now that the year is winding down, it’s time for gaming publications all over the world to start compiling their annual “best of lists,” with the Associated Press leading the pack.

Despite not being a game-specific outlet, AP has put together a relatively strong listing. Taking top honors is Portal 2, but Bastion, Skyrim, Arkham City and even Rayman are represented. Here’s the full top ten:

Tony Hawk HD Coming Summer 2012

The remastered classic has a new developer and is headed your way sooner rather than later.

The original Tony Hawk Pro Skater started a revolution in the world of sports gaming. It had great mechanics, broad appeal, and one of the best soundtracks ever stuck in a digital product. Unfortunately, the series went downhill fast, with most fans agreeing that the free-roaming, random environment builds of later titles never really lived up to the promise of the original.

Birdman seems to have realized that fans really just want a return to form, and announced at this weekend’s VGAs that a remastered version of the original game will be hitting digital shelves sometime soon. As of today, we have a few more details regarding what players can expect. First, remastered levels from THPS1 and 2, plus a bunch of new skaters.

The game is being developed by the company behind Tony Hawk Ride, Robomodo. But before you get your pitchforks out and storm the nearest GameStop, you should know that Tony Hawk HD is being developed with traditional controls in mind – you’ll play with your PlayStation or Xbox controller.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD is slated for a summer 2012 release, the perfect time for a skating game.

Hopefully the game manages to recapture the pure fun of the original. I still remember my friends and I hitting a few rounds of Pro Skater before heading out to get our boards confiscated by angry cops. Those were the days.

Aaaand a quick search for the original Pro Skater indicates that it came out 12 years ago. Man, today I feel old.

New Bejeweled on iPhone

PopCap re-launches one of the most popular puzzle games ever made, complete with a free version.

PopCap has officially removed the older version of Bejeweled 2 + Blitz, replacing it with a revamped version that features elements from Bejeweled 3. They’ve also gone and dropped a free version of the game, which consists solely of the one-minute “Score Attack” mode originally found in Bejeweled Blitz.

The new game, which goes by the same title as the retired version, contains the Zen and Diamond Mine modes found in Bejeweled 3, plus Classic play. And since PopCap is known for keeping their products updated, it’s only fair to assume that new features will be added over time.

Bejeweled 2 + Blitz is currently available on the iTunes Store for 99 cents – if you’re into puzzle games and time-wasters, it’s definitely worth a look. People love to talk about Angry Birds as the start of the mobile gaming revolution, but Bejeweled is actually second on the list of best-selling mobile games of all time, lead only by Tetris.

Iran Bans Battlefield 3

The Iranian government is not pleased with the way Iran was treated in Battlefield 3, to the point of banning the game from sale in their country. The game’s primary offender? A staged attack by U.S. forces against Iran’s capital city of Tehran. There are two sides to this argument – you could argue that Iran is overreacting to a video game, but you could also argue that they’re justified in objecting to the content. Where do you land on this one?

Where and When Should the Next Assassin’s Creed Go?

We know Ubisoft is planning another Assassin’s Creed game, and it looks like they’re turning to their players for advice on where to set it. A leaked survey to fans of the franchise lists several possible locations, including the Victorian British Empire, Medieval China, and even the American Revolution. PlayStation Vita Memory Cards are Pricey

This is by far the most-commented story of the week – GameStop, using rough Yen conversions, posted prices for the proprietary memory cards that will be available for Sony’s Vita handheld, and gamers are not pleased with the cost. The smallest card, at 4GB, runs $29.99 – a far cry from what similarly sized non-Sony memory cards cost nowadays. Of course, Yen conversion is tricky, so we’ll have to wait on an official Sony announcement before throwing too big a hissy fit.

What is Your Game of the Year?

In this post, QJ writer Tim Curtain poses the question on everyone’s mind: What exactly is the best game of the year. With huge titles like Skyrim, Portal 2 and Skyward Sword on the list, it’s going to be hard for anyone to truly nail down a winner. While the game boasts plenty of mindless assassinating and exploring, there’s always a significant historical tone to each game, as well as cameos from some of the most famous names in our collective past.

We’ve explored renaissance Italy, hung out in Constantinople before it became Istanbul, and skulked around during the Third Crusade, but where are we going next? That’s just the question posed by a survey from Empire State Gamers, sent out to a bunch of Assassin’s Creed fans. The survey asks where gamers think the next game should take place and poses some interesting options.

Check them out:

• The violent conflicts of the Imperial Dynasties in Medieval China

• The advent of the mighty British Empire during Victorian England

• The culmination of the Pharaoh Reign in Ancient Egypt

• The invasion of the Americas by the Spanish Conquistadors

• The confrontation between British colonists and native Americans during The American Revolution

• The overthrow of the Tsar Empire by the Communists during the Russian Revolution

• The Warlord Battles in Feudal Japan

• The rise of Cesar’s Empire in Ancient Rome

Of all these locations, I think the Tsar Empire and British Empire sound like the most plausible options. Sure, Ancient Egypt would be fun, as would the American revolution, but there isn’t much room for free running in those areas and times. At least, not in the scale we’ve seen in previous games. Then again, Ubisoft can always fudge the architecture a bit, right?

A new service claims to help gamers find and trade the titles they love, without getting slapped by low re-sale prices. But are they for real? We sit down with the site’s founders, Rob and Shawn McClellan, to find out.

If you've ever tried to trade-in a used game at a brick and mortar retailer, you probably know the sting of the brutal price drop. A game you bought yesterday for full price is somehow only worth half that today, but will unsurprisingly be re-sold close to the original price.

It’s frustrating, but for the most part there wasn’t much gamers could do. Now, one site is claiming to have the solution to this problem, in the form of targeted gamer-to-gamer trading. This site is Trukatu.com, and I shot a few questions to the company’s founders to find out what makes this service so different from GameFly or other trade-in services.

Here’s the full interview, so you can decide for yourself:

What is Trukatu.com?

Trukatu.com is the new revolution in video game trading.

How does Trukatu differ from existing services like GameFly?

Unlike game rental services, once you receive your new game through Trukatu, you OWN it.

We differ from other online trading services in that we don’t convert your games to points or virtual currency. Trades are also completely anonymous between users because everything is mailed directly to Trukatu, where the games are checked for quality. We even provide postage-paid mailers so there’s no shipping costs to users whatsoever.

How does the trade-in system work?

Instead of points or credits, you receive GAMES for your games. After building a game library, users are offered trades and are given the opportunity to accept, modify or deny each one. Once a trade is accepted, users mail in their games to be verified and swapped. Our mailers are designed to function as a 2-way mailer. After you complete your first trade and receive your new game, you will already have a return mailer in your possession for your NEXT TRADE.

What types of games can participants expect to find? New releases? Older titles?

Trukatu is tailored to all levels of gamers; from basic gamers who just want to trade in old games they no longer play, to the ultimate power gamer who wants a new challenge every week. Our selection is based on our gamers’ libraries, and includes games for PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, Xbox, and Xbox360.

How does Trukatu go about matching trade offers?

Users create a library of games they have and games they want using a comprehensive search function with quick and easy browsing. Trukatu continuously compares these libraries to form trade matches. Users can also initiate direct trades to other users, where you could offer a couple of your games for that amazing new one someone else has already mastered.

How is your subscription plan built (ie, tiers like Xbox Live gold, or trade limitations)?

During beta, users will pay $10 for each accepted trade. Later, we will also offer monthly recurring subscription plans, lowering the cost per trade. Offering these different plans allows Trukatu to cater to all types of gamers.

Who are you, and what is your experience in the industry?

We are two brothers from Northwest Ohio with a passion for gaming. I am an IT professional and self-proclaimed video game nerd. I also love programming (Java, C#, C++, HTML/PHP/Javascript) and I've even published a Nintendo DS game on QJ.net titled KhetDS many years ago. My brother, Shawn, has a background in banking and business finance with years of management experience. I am the IT guy and he is the backbone of the business. There has always been a constant sibling rivalry between us since I’m the “younger and smarter” brother but that rivalry helps us balance the creativity and experience within Trukatu.

What led you to create Trukatu?

Trukatu came together in late 2010 with the idea to finally put gamers in control by drastically changing the way video games are traded. The concept was designed we were tired of paying high costs for used games only to turn around and sell them back for just pennies on the dollar. We wanted to put the gamer in control by creating a place where they could trade video games without the hassle and high cost associated with retail game trading today.

How does the inspection process work?

When games arrive at Trukatu, they are individually inspected, ensuring that they are the correct games, and they are in good working condition. Then the swap is made and the games are sent off to their new owners.

What safety mechanisms are in place for members?

We act as the middle-man. By sending all games to Trukatu, no private information is shared between users, and game quality is always guaranteed.

Grand Theft Auto III Coming to Your iPhone

Rockstar announces the 10th anniversary edition of its old-school classic, remastered and headed directly to your mobile phone.

It’s hard to imagine, but Grand Theft Auto III, the game generally recognized as revolutionizing what game developers could do with an open world, has been out for 10 years. For a bit of perspective, the number one song in 2001 was Independent Women Part 1, by Destiny’s Child. Beyoncé was still a person in a band when GTAIII hit shelves.

Anyway, this post isn’t about Beyoncé. It’s about Rockstar’s most recent announcement – in celebration of the tenth anniversary of GTAIII, they’re releasing the game not to consoles or direct download, but directly to mobile platforms.

Here’s the currently supported device lineup:

Apple iOS Devices: iPad 2, iPhone 4S

Android Phones: Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S2

Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Rockstar notes that this list isn’t complete, and they’ll be releasing a more in-depth list of compatible devices once they’re a little closer to dropping the game on the open market. If you happen to be going to New York Comic Con, you can give the game a test run at the Rockstar booth.

Everyone else will just need to wait until later this fall; there’s no official release but it’s safe to say we’ll see GTAIII on our iPads sometime during the holiday season.

I’m just amazed at how far we’ve come technology-wise. I remember being amazed at the freedom that game created, and it’s incredible to think that I could have the same experience on a device that fits in my pocket.

This isn't the first time manufacturers have attempt to come up with a controller that cools the hands while you play, Logitech has tried for the PC [http://www.logitech.com/en-au/441/292?WT.z_sp=Image]... but this one lights up!

Airflo have produced a few different 'cooling' devices for our consoles before, primarily extra cooling to sit under your Xbox or PS3 console for those hotter days.

The next logical step, is of course, cooling down those sweaty hands.

I'm not sure about you, but I play in complete air conditioned comfort (muhaha!), so I need not worry about such matters. I also live in a 24 story mansion and Donald Trump comes over to play Dance Dance Revolution! True Story!

But there are those times when I am so busy fragging my next victims on CoD... Ok, the reality is I go 1-10 every time I play that damned game, it is a lesson in futility...

Back to the point at hand, my hands do get somewhat sweaty when playing Xbox, so this will help when I need to replace my current controller.

Thanks to Airflo, I can now

a) Keep my hands cool while seeing my controller in the dark; and

b) Never have to worry about putting down my Xbox controller to hold pretty girls hand immediately and coating her in my geek sweat!

Yes, pretty girls wander around my gaming room while I play console! I swear!
