48 hours certainly flies by when you’re playing demos and writing snarky articles.
Guild Wars 2 is shaping up to be one of the biggest MMO releases of the year, and ArenaNet is presently allowing fans to sign up for a chance to jump into the game’s first open beta. Sadly, there won’t be room for everyone who signs up, but if you like Guild Wars and you want to get in on the next game, you may as well drop your name in the hat.
Here’s what you need to do to get in on the Guild Wars 2 beta:
Head to this website before 1:00pm, EST.
Click “Sign Up Now”
Download and run the system diagnostic software
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the scan
Once the scan is complete, you’ll be redirected to a site at which you can officially put yourself in the running for Guild Wars 2 beta contention. At the time of this writing, there were about two hours left for registration. If you make it into the beta, be sure to give me a wave. Or fireball.
Are you signing up for the Guild Wars beta, or waiting on the retail release?

Users are reporting serious problems with the PC version of Saints Row the Third.
2011 has definitely been the year of the buggy launch. We’ve seen Origin issues, an unavailable CoD Elite, Skyrim crashes, an inoperable Arkham City and a barely functioning RAGE. It certainly seems like developers had a hard time putting the final layer of polish on their games this year, and Saints Row the Third is apparently no exception.
Players of the PC version of Saints Row the Third are reporting that the game’s outdoor settings (of which there are many) cause their systems to slow down immensely, making the game nearly unplayable. The glitch only occurs in Saints Row’s open world – you know, the open world that’s supposed to be the entire core of the game.
Volition is working with users to get the issue resolved. They’re taking dxdiag files and talking to people on the official Saints Row and Steam forums in order to get some idea of what’s happening – the problem isn’t limited to AMD or NVIDIA hardware, so it’s going to take them some time to lock down.
While it’s nice to see the company interacting with players and trying to fix the problem, the immense number of broken titles we’ve seen this year is an interesting, and slightly alarming trend.
Do you think developers are getting sloppy?

Ó

The Japanese games developer has filed a new patent for a Wiimote touchpad accessory, but it’s not exactly clear what they’re planning on doing with it.
Nintendo is the champion of accessories. From the Zapper to the Wii wheel, nearly every Nintendo console generation has been marked with some sort of game-specific add-on. Just look at the Wii controller section of your favorite big-box retailer if you want to see this in action.
Now, it looks like Nintendo is plotting yet another add-on for the Wiimote, likely aimed at its upcoming Wii U device.
Essentially, you slide this thingamajig onto the Wiimote, and then use it as a touchpad. The device apparently functions through clever manipulation of mirrors, but I’m not a very smart person so I’m having a hard time following the description. Basically, when you touch the pad, the device works, and when you leave it alone it functions like a normal Wiimote.
Nintendo has noted that possible applications include drawing pads or mouse pointers, but I’m still having a hard time wrapping my mind around what exactly their intent could be. As we know, many patents never see the light of day, so this could be one more odd Nintendo technology that doesn’t quite make it to shelves.
What do you think of a Wiimote touchpad? Also, can you make any sense of the diagram?

Fans awaiting to get a glimpse of how PES 2012 will look like can stop wondering this week. Konami confirmed that a demo will be sent out later this week.
Said PES 2012 Team Leader, Jon Murphy, on Twitter: "First PES demo out on Wednesday. It's based on early code so we'll release a second one around launch for you to check final quality."
As reports would have it, there will be 12 different teams and 10 Minute matches to be featured in both demos. I personally think it's a nice touch from Konami to be coming out with two demos, just so fans can have a final quality check on the game.
PES 2012, which Konami has dubbed to be their "most ambitious and advanced football game ever", comes out on October 14th for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Gracing the cover is none other than football heartthrob, Cristiano Ronaldo.

If there's one thing that the tool developers for PS Vita made sure, it's that game developers will have an easy time creating games for the hardware.
SN Systems, the developing group responsible for the dev tools kit, took notice of the developing issues for the PS3 when it first launched, and since "thought about how developers pick it up and how they got started" when they started working on Vita.
According to SN Systems director Andy Beveridge, "We love the technology, so confronted with something like PS3, the first thing we think is 'how are we going to support debugging all of those SPUs, and how are developers going to use them?'."
One might consider that the PS3 was the trial and error model for the PS Vita considering the initial difficulties they had with it. "[On] the PS3 tools, that is the direction we went, and we dded support for all the intricate hardware. The fancier it was, the more diagnostics we could show developers, and the more they could interact with. That can be different from what some developers coming to a platform would expect."
They've learned their lessons definitely now, though, thanks to the feedback they've had from the PS3 experience the past five years, and now they'ev come up with a more accessible development tool kit for the Vita.
Sony had previously guaranteed that they will be making sure that they come up with just as much titles on the PS Vita as they did with the PS3.
