Sony Reports on Vita Game Sales

The system is off to a strong start with excellent digital and retail game sales.

PlayStation Vita has had a solid launch over in Japan, selling well over 320,000 units and moving 300,000 launch games off shelves. While some news outlets are reporting the software totals as below par, what they don’t take into account are the digital downloads offered by Sony.

The Nintendo 3DS, for example, had a first-week attachment rate of 0.95, meaning almost everyone that bought a system bought a game. PSP’s was 1.06. Vita’s looks low, but without numbers on digital downloads, it’s hard to get a bead on exactly how well things are going.

Sony has confirmed that their in-store game sales are about what they were hoping for, but also that download versions are “exceeding expectations.” They didn’t drop an official number, though one will almost certainly be released in the coming weeks.

For now, it looks like Vita is having a relatively successful launch. First-week numbers are strong and the unit has fair momentum heading into the winter doldrums of entertainment properties.

Do you think these sales figures indicate a willingness on the part of gamers to shift to digital distribution? Steam and other services are already wildly successful, but what about for consoles and handhelds?

FFXII-2 Tops Japanese Sales Charts

Square Enix’s follow up to the maligned Final Fantasy XIII is off to a strong start in Japan. Duh.

If there’s one thing Japan loves, it’s Final Fantasy. So it’s not entirely surprising that Final Fantasy XIII-2, which launched earlier this week for Japanese gamers, has already rocketed to the top of the sales charts. The game moved 500,000 copies in its first week of release, toppling Monster Hunter 3G from the top of the charts and renewing confidence in the Final Fantasy brand.

Of course, Japanese sales trends aren’t always indicative of western performance (as I said, Monster Hunter was #1 until this happened), but it’s definitely good news for Square Enix that their hardcore fan base wasn’t so upset with FFXIII that they abandoned the brand entirely. The actual sales figure, around 525,000, accounts only for PS3 versions of the game.

Some Vita titles also managed to make the list, a good sign for the fledgling handheld. Here’s the top 20, for those of you that like tracking Japanese game sales:

Nintendo is clearly the king of the party in Japan, despite the temporary dominance of one game or another. In the meantime, we’ll just have to wait and see how FFXIII-2 is received here in the west. The previous game was the best selling in the history of the franchise, but also landed to lukewarm reviews.

To concede that your company failed is definitely an odd thing to hear, but that's exactly what we're getting from EA's John Riccitiello.

So said the publisher's big boss, they "failed well" in this generation of consoles. But wait, let him expound on that statement.

"We are facing a world going through unbelievable change with the rise of smartphones, social networks, and more recently the iPad - each of which has turned out to be a platform where gaming is the No. 1 application. We knew it would be hard but we had no idea how hard.

We had to do these three hard things when the press and the financial analysts told us we were crazy. That the cutting was great, but the investment in digital was just not a good idea. It proved very hard to hear the negative drumbeat while tackling very hard challenges at work.

I lost a few friends in the process: smart, creative people who just couldn't stomach the transition.

I wish I could tell you that it has all paid off, that, like Truman, Jobs and Chambers, we have been fully vindicated. Not yet. Yes, we've had a few wins but there is much more to do.

I would argue we failed well. We are students of our own failure. We used our failure to shape and impel us to a better strategy. One that we believe that will ultimately succeed in ways that our previous strategy, even if perfectly executed, could never have done... Trust me. Sooner or later, you're going to get knocked down on your ass. Will you fold? Or will you fail well?"

'It's cool,' Acti said on Modern Warfare weekend leak

Nothing must suck more for publishers than to have a big game snatched from right under their noses and have it leaked to the world before they get to make the big reveal. That's what happened with Modern Warfare 3 last weekend, but instead of whining about it, Activision managed to keep their their composure and go steadily with the flow.

In the words of CEO Eric Hirshberg, "Friday was a really interesting, a really kind of cool day." Okay, not exactly what we were expecting to hear given that massive blimp on their marketing parade.

"No one wakes up and thinks, I hope there's been a leak and our timing gets all messed up," Activision's boss expunds. "And while it's definitely not cool to setal other people's intellectual property, and while it's definitely cool to leak stuff that's not yours, there are ways that you can respond that actually turn the lemons into lemonade. And that's what we tried to do on Friday."

It was a huge concession for them to make, facing the fact that there's nothing they can do to take back the leaked material.

"So what we did," Hirshberg narrated, "was we kind of took that exact conversation we were having in our conference room outside and had it publicly in social media. Through our various channels, through Robert Bowling at IW, through Facebook and through our YouTube channel, we reached out to our fans and we said, 'Look, we didn't schedule this. This wasn't something we had planned. But everyone seems excited, so we're just going to roll with it. So here they are, a couple of assets that weren't scheduled to be out for another couple of weeks, so we're going to release 'em to you today.'"

The leak, while a definite setback in their promotions, may in the end have helped drum up the excitement of the fans for Modern Warfare 3. It probably came at a right time too, given how much flak the franchise is getting as of late. That is not to say, though, that they're a good thing.

"You don't want to spoil the surprises that the game has to offer. Leaks are not positive things, even though we might have used it as a way to amplify our initial viewership," Hirshberg said in conclusion.

What can probably be comforting to know, however, is that the leaks weren't as accurate as people would think, so there should be plenty mor suprises in store for fans out there.
