Dino Patti, head of Playdead Games, says that the current method for marketing and selling games is broken, and has been for quite some time.
Limbo was one of the bigger hits for Xbox’s Live Arcade, PC and PSN in 2010. If you played it at all, you probably still remember some of its haunting imagery – it was just that effective at creating a mood. Now the guy in charge of Limbo’s development company, Playdead Games, is offering his opinion on why direct downloads work, and why the current retail model doesn’t.
Patti’s main thrust appears to be that delivering games via disc just doesn’t make much sense in a world where most gamers can simply download whatever they want from the web. It’s a familiar argument, though Patti does have a bit more experience with digital downloads than most.
Here’s what he had to say:
“"Driving discs in a big van all over the world is really inefficient. I don't understand how anyone can make money out of this. Driving a truck to Japan just to get it delivered to people when they can get it from the net? Hopefully the new consoles will embrace the download space even more."”
Of course, it’s worth noting that Limbo is a tiny, tiny game compared to AAA titles like Skyrim or Battlefield 3. Downloading a 117 MB game is a lot different than downloading a 6 GB game, especially when you consider that here in the states, out of 307 million people, only around 67 million have access to broadband services.
Sony Computer Entertainment’s Kaz Hirai summed up this counterpoint nicely:
“"We do business in parts of the world where network infrastructure isn't as robust as one would hope. There's always going to be requirement for a business of our size and scope to have a physical medium. To think everything will be downloaded in two years, three years or even ten years from now is taking it a little bit to the extreme."
I think we’re headed towards an all-digital world, but it can’t happen until global broadband coverage improves and the cost of console hard drives goes way, way down. Hell, I still have a 20gig drive on my Xbox – just try getting me to download a game.
Which opinion do you think is more accurate for the near-future of gaming?

Ó

It's not just you who finds the PC version problems for Rage frustrating. id Software boss, John Carmack, is one with you on that, actually. After all, they did aim to make no delineations in quality for both the console and PC versions.
Said Carmack, "We have had video drives issues that have caused problems and frustrations with our PC fans. Everyone at id Software is very upset by these issues which are mostly out of our control. We are working with both AMD/ATI and Nvidia to help them identify and fix the issues with their drivers."
As Tim Willits further corroborated, when the game was submitted to the "build system", they found the console versions to be "solid and bug-free." Unfortunately, the PC ones weren't.
What matters more to them now is to make sure that these issues be addressed immediately and efficiently. "We've had assurances that these problems are being addressed and new drivers will be available soon," said Carmack.
"We knew that all older AMD drivers, and some Nvidia dirvers would have problems with the game, but we were running well in-house on all of our test systems. When launch day came around and the wrong driver got released, half of our PC customers got a product that basically didn't work. The fact that the working driver has incompatibilities with other titles doesn't help either. Issues with older/lower end/ exotic setups are to be expected on a PC releaes, but we were not happy with the experience on what should be prime platforms."
In the end, this was what Carmack had to say about the issues that arose on their PC version of Rage -- and it's going to be quite controversial once again, definitely.
"We do not see the PC as the leading platform for games. That statement will enrage some people, but it is hard to characterize it otherwise; both console versions will have larger audiences than the PC version. A high end PC is nearly 10 times as powerful as a console, and we could unquestionably provide a better experience if we chose that as our design point and we were able to expent the same amount of resources on it."
To cushion the driver ssues, Bethesda had previously offered PC Performance tips to PC gamers. Oh well, them's the breaks. Rage set out to have it all, but unfortunately, the PC version just couldn't catch the wave alongside the console ones.

DICE confirms that Xbox 360 owners will have the option of installing high-resolution textures directly to their hard drives, but leaves PS3 owners guessing.
If you’ve played the “Battlefield 3” open beta, you’re probably aware that despite a few minor (and major) bugs, it’s one of the best-looking Xbox 360 titles in recent memory. Now, DICE has confirmed that the game can look even better, with an optional installation option for high-resolution textures.
In an quick conversation with GamerZines, “BF3” producer Patrick Liu talked briefly on the subject of DVD limitations and the Xbox 360’s texture install:
"There's a voluntary install on the 360… I think Rage did it as well, where you can install content to stream higher res textures. We're pushing that technology to the limit, and compared to our competitors, I would argue that we're the best looking game.”
Since there aren’t any videos or screenshot comparisons to look at regarding this update, it’s hard to say whether the optional download will result in a massive increase in visual quality. There’s also no indication of the potential size of the install; if you’re running low on space now might be the time to clear out some of those old games. The PC version of BF3 sucks up a whopping 20GB of storage, so it’s safe to say whatever you install is going to be big.
Another mystery left unsolved is what options will be available to PS3 owners. Liu didn’t mention whether the PlayStation 3 version would also feature an optional texture install or whether the higher-resolution textures would be automatically installed with the initial game load.
Either way, I’m curious to know whether the textures affect gameplay at all. Will players with the optional install have an easier time seeing opponents? Do the textures apply to solo and multiplayer modes?
We’ll keep you posted as facts are made available.

True, there will be a vast amount of racing featured in Rage. But before you go thinking that all that gunfire action will go head to head with burning rubber on the thick asphalt, id Software clarifies that this is not exactly going to be the case.
Explained creative director Tim Willits, much of the racing side of Rage is actually going to be optional. In fact, only two out of the whopping 25 races in the game are required for you to complete.
Said Willits, "It's actually quite difficult [to balance the elements] to be honest with you. We don't knock you over the head with the racing."
Customer satisfaction is definitely what id Software is going for when Rage comes out next month. That's why they're making sure that whatever add-on content they'll be coming out with, it's going to be what the players want. You better make sure you've got your console harddrives prepped for its arrival. Rage will use up 8GB on your PS3, while it's going to require a whopping 22GB for the Xbox 360.

We may not know what Capcom's plans are for Nintendo's Wii U, but we can definitely say they've got something up their sleeves.
Capcom Europe boss David Reese divulged that they are, in fact, working on some prototypes, and that if we're lucky, we just might be able to spot a couple of them at the upcoming TGS event later in September.
"Capcom haven't announced anything officially on Wii U. I thiknk they have done prototypes. There are only so many things you can get ready for E3. But they might show something at the Tokyo Games Show which is where Wii U is more focused on. I haven't seen anything personally myself but since the companies are quite close, I am sure they must be looking at something.
Some of the big names like Ubisoft and EA said that they will support it. I think Riccitiello was on stage at E3 and said, 'I am going to support it,' and when they say that, they will."
He also had a piece of advice for Nintendo's naysayers. "Never undestimate Nintendo [though]. You suddenly think 'how have they managed to sell so many?'. Wii Sports and something like that... people play for ten minutes. They become tired and they stop playing. I think Nintendo will bounce back. I think they will come out with some original First Party titles. Nintendo has amazing First Party and that's what drives it."
So far, Eiji Aonuma is foreseeing a possible Wii U launch for a brand new Legend of Zelda game. The rest of the company has also said that they have most certainly learned their lessons from the original Wii - such as the problems on software, and hopefully, these lessons will help them avoid having it again on the Wii U.

Reports are coming in that the new Xbox Live update affects the console's DVD drives. Word got out from a supposed verified email from the XBL customer support.
According to the email, the recent update is causing problems to "a very small numbers of Xbox 360 owners" as they are said to be hindered from "playing retail discs".
Avery Penn was one of the customers who received the email from the XBL customer support.
"Saying they were able to detect this issue over Xbox Live, Microsoft went on to say that, after jumping through all the necessary hoops, they'd send me a brand new Xbox 360 S and a year's free Xbox Live. At this point, my jaw hit the flooor."
It might have been dumbfounding for Penn considering that his console, a 60GB Pro from 2009, is still very much capable of reading discs. However, it must be noted that the update in question is the one slated for phasing between May 19th - 30th. This one essentially allows an extra GB of usable storage for the game discs. Therefore, if that's the case, then the discs that will not be read by Penn's console would then have to be games that have yet to be released.
We're waiting for word on Microsoft's official word on the matter, but in the meantime, we'd have to say it's pretty impressive how they preempted an even bigger issue by not only admitting that there's a problem, but more than that, offering compensation ASAP, even before the customers realized the problem.

Previously, the court had also granted Sony permission to seize GeoHot's hard drives, as well as the IP addresses of those who visited his site, so that Sony may prove that most of the visitors were from North California, thereby settling the issue of jurisdiction.
The 21-year-old hacker has maintained that he did not accept monetary donations from anyone through his PayPal account so that he may pursue his hacking exploits.
Sony has also previously threatened to sue any one who posts or shares to the public further the hacking tools or encryption key from GeoHot.
Interestingly enough, proving that George Hot received monetary donations as a form of support for him to pursue the PS3's hack is an unnecessary burden on the part of Sony as it is not required by law.
