Today must be “Official Update Your Game Day,” with yet another high profile title getting patched.
Whew, today has been crazy. Skyrim, World of Warcraft and EVE are all getting patched or updated today, and apparently so is Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception. I guess Tuesday is a universally accepted day to patch games, probably due to low overall traffic in the middle of the week. Who knows?
Whatever the reason, Naughty Dog has chosen today to deliver your eagerly anticipated Uncharted 3 patch. The game update addresses a few issues, such as fixing a motion blur problem and preventing multiplayer medal streaks from resetting, but the most important change is likely the addition of new “Alternate Aim Settings.”
The new aim settings were introduced into the game as the result of player feedback. Some players felt that aiming in Uncharted 3 had changed slightly from Uncharted 2, and not for the better. Naughty Dog actually brought a few fans into the studio to work with different  builds and provide more detailed feedback, and working with that and general player comments added the Alternate Aim Settings option to the game. You’ll just have to try it to see if it works for you.
They’ve also added a movie cut scene viewer, though I thought that’s what Uncharted was to begin with.
You can check out the full patch notes here or just download the patch to your PS3 if you’d rather live dangerously.
Be sure to let us know what you think of the new aiming system.

Eurogamer gives Uncharted 3 an 8 out of 10, and somehow sets of a massive controversy and an intense comment war.
It’s no secret that the world of video games reviews pretty much revolves around a 7-9 scale. Minus the occasional incredible game that lands a 10 or the periodic disaster that ends up below 7, the majority of new games (and most AAA games, for sure) are usually given a rating between 7 and 9. It’s an annoying reality of current games media, but one gamers have learned to deal with.
We talked a bit about Uncharted 3’s rave reviews earlier in the week (and had a comment war of our own), when I posted a rough summary of the four or five reviews that had been posted. I included the review from Eurogamer, which noted that the Uncharted 3 was an excellent title but overall a very narrow, shallow experience. What I didn’t realize in posting that part of the review is that while the 8 Eurogamer awarded the game certainly seemed innocuous enough, it had started a firestorm of controversy.
Apparently, even though the great majority of gamers have yet to play Uncharted 3, which isn’t out yet, a fair number of people are incensed over this perceived shellacking of their favorite title. The comments section of the article, which has ballooned to over 400 comments, is rife with things like this:
“First they go and redesign the site to make it look like a big cluster**** of garbage, then they go and give Uncharted 3, the best game of 2011, 8/10”
And this:
“Even Edge gave it a 9, this site is a joke is the lowest review so far.”
And, perhaps most hilariously, this:
“I can understand not wanting to go with a biased opinion, but could you guys have at least got someone who actually likes the franchise to handle the review??”
It’s important to note that a large number of comments support the review and understand that a one-point deviation from the chorus of 9s being handed out to the game isn’t really much to fret about, but it’s just amazing to see so many gamers so upset over one particular review.
The main consensus seems to be that Eurogamer purposefully sank the title to either stand out from the crowd or start some sort of argument that would thrust it into the spotlight. After reading the review a couple of times, from where I sit it looks more like a case of a guy writing an honest and thorough review and then getting strung up because his opinion differs from that of the majority. It doesn’t take a scientist to spot the intense fanboy-ism taking place in those comments.
If you like the Uncharted series, you’re probably going to buy Uncharted 3. Does it really matter if one reviewer gave it an 8 instead of a 9?
Sound off in the comments!

Drake’s latest adventure just blew up all over my Twitter feed. Let’s find out what some of the major reviewers are saying about what could be the biggest PlayStation 3 title of the year.
As someone that has a general taste for Sony and the PlayStation brand, I have to admit that I’m a little jealous of Uncharted. The game looks amazing, the story is great, and as much as it pains me to say it, they did an excellent job on both of the games that have come out so far. So, nice work to the Naughty Dog team and congratulations to PS3 owners everywhere – you finally won one.
Anyway, Uncharted 3 has been sitting in the back of everyone’s mind even as Activision and EA ramp up their ridiculous war for the holiday season. Last week we saw a little bit of the game through Harrison Ford’s eyes, and the multiplayer beta (available only at Subway!) has generated a fair amount of buzz. Regardless of any perceived battle of the titans, Uncharted 3 is still holding a significant amount of attention from both the gaming media and fans of the brand.
I periodically check my Twitter (follow me! @Mikedotfoster) feed for breaking news updates when I’m writing, and the last update found my feed under siege with Uncharted 3 reviews. So let’s see what the preliminary response to the game has turned out to be:
Joystiq – 4.5 Stars
They loved the co-op mode, praised the game’s excellent storytelling and graphics, and essentially said the game was an inch away from perfection. They did note that a lot of the game’s greatness comes from re-using elements of Uncharted 2, but called this more of a positive than negative.
GameTrailers – 9.5 out of 10
Voice acting is praised and the script is noted as one of the game’s strongest elements. They noted a continued lack of flexibility from former titles, but fans of the game are probably used to this facet and consider it a plus. The game’s massive set pieces are mentioned as a major highlight, but the poor enemy AI draws some negative attention. Overall, they say the game “can’t be missed.”
IGN – 10 out of 10
IGN’s review could only be described as “gushing.” They even went so far as to call the game a “masterpiece,” focusing entirely on the massive set pieces and series of high-budget action sequences. IGN says that Uncharted 3 is one of “gaming’s finest moments,” but their review seems lacking on any technical analysis and focuses almost entirely on the emotional experiences of the player.
Ars Technica – (No Rating)
As with the other reviews, a strong focus is placed on the strong character development and impressive narrative. They do note that the game dances with believability a little bit, and that the combat system still feels pretty rough in certain situations. They also mention that the jumping puzzles are repetitive, but overall give the game high praise and consider it an achievement for Naughty Dog and the PS3.
EuroGamer – 8 out of 10
Calling the single-player campaign “peerless,” EuroGamer sings high praise about the game’s execution but pulls back their accolades by calling Uncharted 3 narrow and shallow. They note that fans of the franchise and cinema will be happy with this latest title, but shouldn’t expect too much in the way of risk-taking or flexibility.
Overall, it looks like Uncharted 3 is a strong buy. There’s no room to customize your experience and the story is apparently straight as an arrow, but the multiplayer seems to add replay value and the overall experience can’t be matched. A fitting new entry to one of the best PS3 franchises, and one that should keep fans happy for some time to come.
Are you picking up Uncharted 3 next week?

Let's take a break from all that multiplayer action in Uncharted 3 for a while, shall we? Don't worry, we've got something just as good in lieu of that.
This video here below showcases the single-player action in the game, thanks to the demo that came out for this particular mode of the much-awaited third iteration in the mega-selling series.
It runs for just a little below five minutes, ensuring that you'll have as plenty of time as the demo could allow you to see Nathan in action. In sand, by the way. Lots and lots of it.
Uncharted 3 is set to come out on November 1st, and was recently confirmed to feature the controversial PSN Pass. If this single-player demo video just can't cut it for you, then fine. We've also got this London Underground gameplay video for you to ogle at instead.

You'd know the Naughty Dog team is dead serious about getting Uncharted 3's multiplayer mode right when you find out that they've been working on it even before Uncharted 2 launched.
Yep, that's right. That was the revelation made by lead designer Richard Lemarchand in an interview with Gamespot.
"We've been working on it since almost before we finished Uncharted 2. Building out new multiplayer maps, and coming up with ideas for new both competitive and cooperative game types," he explained.
"We've added in a ton of customizable content, including customizable symbols that people can use for their clans, and that appear in-game, and a whole tiered unlocking system of boosters, which players can buy with in-game cash to give them a little bit of a leg-up in the multiplayer sphere."
Indeed, there's no other way for them to move but forward, especially after the satisfying success that the multiplayer mode of the previous title yielded for htem. "Uncharted 2's multiplayer was the first time we'd made a multiplayer game in about five years, and we really, really liked what we'd been able to achieve with it."
"We have a big, very enthusiastic player base who are still playing a lot a year and a half after the release of the game. So that gave us an excellent springboard to make the multiplayer component of Uncharted 3."
Naughty Dog co-founder Evan Wells was recently quoted as saying that they would have no qualms about killing off a lead character in the franchise, if the story eventually calls for it. They've also said that for as long as they can churn out good ideas for storylines, they won't mind making some more Uncharted games till, oh, just forever.
Uncharted 3 is slated to come out this November exclusively for the PS3.

If there's one thing that the team behind Uncharted 3 are most careful about, it would be the retention of the game's adventurous spirit.
Creative director Amy Hennig explains in a recent interview with Gamespot just how exactly they do that. "If somebody comes up with an idea that seems like it fits, and you see everybody sort of spark on that, that's meaningful."
"On the other hand, if somebody comes up with an idea that maybe would be awesome in another game, but everybody's kind of like 'meh'... that's meaningful too."
Hennig also reealed that adlibbing is very much encouraged from the cast, and fortunately, the script allows for that to come out naturally. Ultimately, their goal is to keep up with the traditions of pulp adventure while telling "a story about believable characters who are flawed and charming and all the things that go along with that."
As for Drake appearing like a superhero of sorts, Hennig says they're not up for that.
"The adventure genre is more about kind of groundedness, and there's a sort of retro aspect to it without making it old-fashioned and corny. We always have to check ourselves to make sure we're not making a kind of modern action movie."
