If you want to know what’s new in Minecraft patch 1.2, look no further than this short video.
Minecraft patch 1.2 is now officially live, and with it comes a whole slew of new features. You can build higher, investigate menacing jungles, collect cats and find new items and blocks, for starters. But why would you want to read about these new features, when you could simply see them in action?
One clever YouTube user has managed to put together a massive in-game Rube Goldberg machine that shows off quite a bit of the latest patch’s additions. Check it out:
If you’re not quite sure what you just witnessed, consult this list of changes from Mojang’s official site:
New jungle biome
Added ocelots
Added cats
Added iron golems
New AI for mobs
Tame wolves can have puppies
Villagers will have children if there is room in their village
New map height limit (256 instead of 128)
New items and blocks
Doors have been updated so that double-doors work better with redstone
Added rare drops for mobs
Many other minor tweaks and fixes
Minecraft patch 1.2 is free to download and available now, so go get yourself an ocelot.

The changing games market makes Live Arcade a redundancy.
Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade has long been a bastion for independent developers and young startups to push their games to the masses. Dozens of enormously popular independent games may have never existed if not for the Arcade platform. However, XBLA simply doesn’t represent the future of gaming, and Microsoft seems to know it.
Microsoft’s Michael Wolf recently went on the record regarding the future of XBLA. His take is simple: there isn’t a future of XBLA. This isn’t to say that Microsoft will stop hosting indie games, just that the increasing prominence of digital distribution, especially on AAA titles, indicates that the “Arcade” distinction will soon be unfitting for service’s titles.
Here’s Wolf’s full quote on whether XBLA will be phased out, for the sake of clarity:
“Personally, I'd say absolutely, yes. I think digital distribution has to be like that. I don't think XBLA will be leaving soon. It is an incredible platform. We have XBLA fans, I don't think it's going to be announced anytime soon. One thing Microsoft has proven is that we continue to try and adapt and innovate in experiences.”
Essentially, Wolf is saying that as the market shifts to digital distribution, Live Arcade will just be one more facet of game delivery instead of a separate, targeted service.
What do you think? Is the Live Arcade distinction destined to expire?

Adios, World of Warcraft Game Masters!
World of Warcraft is still the industry’s leading paid MMO, but the title has been steadily losing subscribers for the better part of two years. Though the holiday season treated WoW well (the MMO lost only 100,000 players), it’s clear that Blizzard needs to do some serious re-shuffling in order to keep the game profitable for the long term.
And re-shuffling is exactly what the company plans to do. Blizzard has just announced that it is laying off 600 employees, most of which work in customer support. According to the company, 90 percent of the layoffs are occurring in non-development departments of the company. 600 is no small sum—it represents a pretty large chunk of Blizzard-Activision’s total employee number of around 7,300.
Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime had this to say on the topic:
“In order to keep making epic game content while serving players effectively, we have to be smart about how we manage our resources. This means we sometimes have to make difficult decisions about how to best maintain the health of the company. We’re in the process of making some of those hard decisions now.”
In the face of these layoffs, there is still hope for aspiring developers. Blizzard is currently recruiting dev talent for some of its upcoming titles. And the layoffs don’t necessarily mean that Blizz is in financial trouble, just that World of Warcraft is no longer the money-printing machine it once was.
Do you still play WoW? Have you ever interacted with the game’s support staff?

Sometimes the best thing you can do for a game is pull the plug.
Battlefield is one of EA’s biggest brands, so it makes sense that the company would look to cash in on its popularity in any way possible. The most recent tie-in came in the form of an iOS game released for the iPad, known as Battlefield 3: Aftershock. There was only one problem: the game sucked.
Battlefield 3: Aftershock stayed live for only 15 days. Launched on February 7, the game was almost unplayable due to serious connection issues and an unresponsive control scheme. EA pulled the title from the iTunes store on February 22 so that it could tweak the title based on customer feedback.
So how did that tweaking manifest? EA is deleting the game, of course! In a statement issued earlier this week, EA confirmed that development on the game has been shut down completely, and that the servers will be pulled offline March 31.
Battlefield 3: Aftershock was free-to-play, so it’s not like anyone is really getting hurt by the game being taken offline. Anyone, of course, besides EA, who likely sank a large sum of money into the title before realizing it was a lost cause.
Did you play Battlefield 3: Aftershock? What did you think?

Why the innovative games company is headed for failure.
Nintendo is, by most accounts, one of the most innovative forces in the world of gaming. The company lays claim to breakthroughs like force-feedback technology, motion control, z-targeting and a whole host of other now-standard gaming mechanics. Unfortunately, Nintendo’s days of leading the pack are quickly coming to a close.
Nintendo has always performed well in the games marketplace because of its exclusive titles and accessible technologies. However, games aren’t really the future of the games industry. In 2012 and beyond, it’s not games that sell devices, but their multimedia capabilities. One of the fastest-growing groups of console owners is made up of people who primarily use their devices to watch Netflix, listen to music or rent movies.
Nintendo has failed to keep pace with its competitors in the realm of multimedia. And it has also failed to keep pace when it comes to online gaming (friend codes, seriously?). If the Wii U can’t make some major improvements to the way Nintendo delivers multimedia content and online gameplay, it’s simply not going to be the console of choice.
Consumers always flock to the device that provides them the most value. A large number of PS3 sales can be chalked up to Blu-Ray support, just as a large number of Wii sales can be chalked up to the initial hype concerning motion control. In the next console generation, the device with the most utility wins.
If Nintendo fails to recognize this trend, it’s going to find itself toppled from the throne faster than it can say “3DS Lite.”

If you’re eagerly anticipating Dragon’s Dogma, you’re going to have to wait just a bit longer.
Capcom announced early this week that Dragon’s Dogma, its upcoming action-adventure title, would unfortunately have its release pushed back a bit. The game is now slated for a North American release on May 22, and a European release on May 25. That’s a pretty big jump from the target dates, which were March 27 and May 1st respectively.
The news isn’t all bad, however, as Capcom confirmed that Dragon’s Dogma would come with a special code redeemable for access to the Resident Evil 6 demo. Xbox users will have access to the demo on July 3, while PS3 players will have to wait until September 4. If you’re a cross-platform gamer, it looks like Xbox 360 is going to be the better system (assuming you’re buying the game to land the demo).
The delay also gives you more time to pre-order and land some bonus content – GameStop is offering a “Pawn Upgrade Pack,” Best Buy has an “Amor Upgrade Pack,” and Amazon is pushing the “Weapon Upgrade Pack.” Make of that what you will.
Are you looking forward to Dragon’s Dogma? What about the Resident Evil 6 demo?

The popular dancing game has moved more copies than you can possibly imagine.
In the inner circle of gaming, it’s completely okay to make fun of games like Just Dance 3. Serious gamers think of them as niche products for kids and casuals, and it’s not rare to see a joke at the franchise’s expense over on Reddit or in the comments section of news posts.
What most gamers may not realize, however, is that Just Dance is ridiculously popular. Ubisoft has just revealed sales figures for the most recent iteration, Just Dance 3 – the game moved 7 million copies. That puts Just Dance 3 at second on the charts for 2011, placing it just behind Modern Warfare 3. Seriously.
The franchise haul for Just Dance is now over 25 million, making it one of the more prominent franchises in the world of gaming. Ubisoft also had some other interesting figures; for example, gamers dance to around 7.5 million songs per day.
It’s easy to forget that there’s such a big market out there for games that don’t involve jumping out of helicopters or slaying dragons, but the success of Just Dance proves that fun is the one commodity all gamers demand.

Take Skyrim books everywhere.
I think I might just read up on the history of my people on the train.
Skyrim has changed the face of gaming this year. Whilst there have been many open world games, I haven't seen this kind of mad memedom since Minecraft was in mid-Beta. The game is immense and in that hyperbolic size, there are books. Big brash and embolded books that contain every single detail about Skyrim, from the dragons to the seas.
Now you might not want to read those books and maybe you have to go to work to fund your addiction of buying plushie swords from Etsy that look like the ones you have in Skyrim. So with that job may take a commute and you may want to read in that travelling and now what shall you read? The books from Skyrim.
Yep, every book in Skyrim you can read. But now, thanks to the work of a Mr. Johan Gutenberg,  a software dev who is called Capaneus, who has written all of the written material in the world of Skyrim to now be readable by your Kindle or other e-Reader. On a train, on a plane, in a car, going far? You can be the master of all Skyrim knowledge.
Gutenberg has said about the books that he took a look at how the game stores the information and storytelling and more often than not "it was in plain text!" So he pasted the book text into separate documents, put in headings, "created a table of contents and a cover, and just like that", you can read everything in Skyrim!"
Now despite the copyright, I think I should give this guy credit where it's due because no one at Bethesda did this and I urge you to head over to Capaneus' website to download a copy of whatever books you want, post-haste!

Bethesda’s latest content update is causing major problems for the enormous RPG.
Skyrim has more than a few bugs. While most of these bugs are small and shouldn’t cause players too many problems, others, like the PS3’s inability to keep playing the game, are major. Bethesda was looking to solve some of the larger issues when it pushed a patch through for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game, but in doing so seems to have broken some other things.
Most importantly: resistance. The in-game mechanic that stops your character from taking certain types of damage, i.e. frost resistance or fire resistance, is now completely broken. Armor that offers some sort of resistance bonus isn’t delivering the damage reduction it should, and players are not happy.
There’s another, smaller issue post-patch – some dragons are flying around backwards. This bug is obviously far less important than the complete disintegration of a vital in-game mechanic, but still does plenty to ruin the aesthetic of the game. Some players are also reporting more frequent crashes.
One has to wonder what Bethesda is thinking this morning. They rushed to patch their game due to a tidal wave of player complaints, but perhaps were a little too eager to push out an update. Now, players will have to deal with game-breaking bugs until the developer can sort out what exactly they tweaked in the update.
I haven’t downloaded the patch to my 360 quite yet, so I’m thinking I may just disconnect the box from Live before I start it up. I haven’t run into any huge bugs without the patch, and I’m certainly not going to purposefully break my game.
What do you think about the patch? Was Bethesda right to rush to solve the problem, or should they have been a little more careful?

Well, Skyrim is finally out after what seems like an eternity of waiting. So does it live up to the hype, or is it just another victim of its own expectations?
Although Skyrim won’t be the largest launch of the year in terms of sales, it’s still among the most highly anticipated. Gamers around the world called in sick today to jump into the world of Skyrim, slay some dragons, and make absolutely no progress in what is an essentially infinite game. Since the review embargo has been lifted, we’re starting to hear more and more about the game that has for so long been on the tip of everyone’s tongue. So how did it turn out?
Well, in short, great. The game is sitting comfortably at a 96 on Metacritic, barely edging out Skyward Sword for the top spot in new releases. I’ve read through some of the Skyrim reviews and I think I can give you a general idea of what everyone is saying, just in case you’re on the fence about buying the game.
Pros: Reviewers are praising the game’s open world and freedom of exploration. I’ve also seen plenty of compliments for the radiant questing system that ensure you always have something to do, and PC reviews note that the graphics of this game put older Elder Scrolls games to shame. Some reviewers praise the plot and character development, but this is by no means consistent. I’m seeing the word “ever” thrown around a lot, as in “the most liberating RPG ever,” or “most open world ever,” so take that how you will.
Cons: The game, typical to Bethesda form, is packed with bugs. Nothing major, but little glitches like floating mobs, weird collision detection and, my favorite bug of all, a character’s inability to realize there is a cooking pot on their head. These will probably be ironed out over time. Some reviewers have noted that the animation, while improved from Oblivion, is still fairly stilted – third person play isn’t really that improved. The clunky combat system is also listed as a minor problem, but if you like the Elder Scrolls series or Fallout 3 you’ll feel right at home.
So that’s the basic overview. Naturally, Skyrim is a massive experience that can’t be summed up in a review. It certainly looks like a good buy, assuming you’re into that sort of game.
Did you get Skyrim today? How’s it working out?

New details about the game’s “Creation Engine” reveal that it will generate new quests into infinity.
Skyrim is a huge game. We knew that already, what with the predictions of a 300-hour gameplay experience. But what we didn’t know is that the game actually continues into infinity, automatically generating content for as long as you feel like playing it.
Sound confusing? Well it is – a little bit. Game director for Skyrim, Todd Howard, has talked a bit about how the games’ new Radiant storytelling system never stops spitting out content, even after you finish the scripted stuff.
Howard says that the game’s engine will randomly create new quests for players that are engineered to send people into areas they haven’t previously visited. Quests can include assassinations, stealing things and, more than likely, slaying dragons. Oh, and don’t worry about running out of dragons – they’re infinite too.
Frankly, I find the idea of an infinite game somewhat terrifying. I downloaded Minecraft last night and even that was enough to overwhelm me, so I’m not really looking forward to trying to sort out everything Skyrim has to offer. I just don’t have 300 hours to put into one title, especially not in the face of the 2011 holiday barrage.
What about you. Do you have time for infinite quests?

Sure, today is all about Modern Warfare 3, and Friday is all about Skyrim. But there’s some other interesting stuff happening this week, such as the updated “Complete Edition” version of L.A. Noire dropping for PC owners.
If you’re not waiting to slay dragons and running around in a cloud of bullets isn’t your thing, L.A. Noire may be just the title you need to get through the week. Especially if you haven’t already played it on a console system.
Here’s the breakdown on what the Complete Edition includes:
Full L.A. Noire game
DLC: Nicholson Electroplating
DLC: Reefer Madness
DLC: The Naked City
DLC: The Consul’s Car
DLC: A Slip of the Tongue
The PC version of L.A. Noire also included updated and improved graphics with higher resolution textures, in addition to full support for NVIDIA’s 3D Vision technology. Pick it up from Steam, OnLive, Direct2Dreive or Amazon right now, or on Friday if you’re in Australia or Europe.
Do you have room for L.A. Noire in your November?

The Elder Scrolls has always been an incredible franchise, and Bethesda has really topped itself with this ridiculous live action trailer for the newest entry in the series.
Skyrim is shaping up to be one of the biggest gaming events in the last ten years, and this brand new trailer from Bethesda has only served to increase my excitement over the title. I don’t want to ruin anything for you, so why don’t you take a look at it  yourself:
Awesome right?! I’ve never played an Elder Scrolls game and I was on the fence about investing my time in Skyrim, but every new video clip I see and every preview I read just keeps pushing me further towards spending my holiday season battling dragons and exploring strange lands. I thought Skyward Sword was going to be my big November title, but my mind just can’t compete with coolness like this.
If you’re at work or can’t be bothered to watch the video, here’s the basic rundown: People in a town from the middle ages are freaking out and one burly looking guy isn’t, and then a dragon shows up. Pretty straightforward, but seriously, watch the thing. Your boss isn’t going to fire you for watching one cool thing today, and may even appreciate your taste in games.
How do you feel about the new trailer? Did it get you sufficiently stoked for 11/11/11? I think I’ve watched this thing five times now, and it just gets better with every viewing. Skyrim!
