Sony Reports on Vita Game Sales

The system is off to a strong start with excellent digital and retail game sales.

PlayStation Vita has had a solid launch over in Japan, selling well over 320,000 units and moving 300,000 launch games off shelves. While some news outlets are reporting the software totals as below par, what they don’t take into account are the digital downloads offered by Sony.

The Nintendo 3DS, for example, had a first-week attachment rate of 0.95, meaning almost everyone that bought a system bought a game. PSP’s was 1.06. Vita’s looks low, but without numbers on digital downloads, it’s hard to get a bead on exactly how well things are going.

Sony has confirmed that their in-store game sales are about what they were hoping for, but also that download versions are “exceeding expectations.” They didn’t drop an official number, though one will almost certainly be released in the coming weeks.

For now, it looks like Vita is having a relatively successful launch. First-week numbers are strong and the unit has fair momentum heading into the winter doldrums of entertainment properties.

Do you think these sales figures indicate a willingness on the part of gamers to shift to digital distribution? Steam and other services are already wildly successful, but what about for consoles and handhelds?

3DS Firmware Update Live

Nintendo updates the 3D handheld with 3D video recording and a few other new features.

Nintendo has finally updated their 3DS handheld with all new firmware in an update pushed live across the globe early this morning. So what’s in store for gamers that download the update? For starters, 3D video recording. But the list of changes certainly doesn’t end there.

The 3DS’s new video-recording software allows you to take up to 10 minutes of footage – Nintendo has even included settings that allow you to make stop-motion or time-lapsed 3D films. You’ll also find a new quest for StreetPass, new panels for Puzzle Swap, and a special geographical map that unlocks as you run into new Miis around your neighborhood and the world.

They’ve even added achievements, though they’re calling them “Accomplishments.” Plus, the eShop now allows for continued downloads in sleep mode, and features support for the addition of demos. All in all, it’s a pretty meaty update for the 3DS. The 3D video thing is cool, but all of the other features are handy as well.

Sonic Generations the Most Pre-Ordered Sonic Game in History, Duh

Sega issues a public statement boasting that their new Sonic title has received more pre-orders than any other Sonic game, but is it really a surprise?

Sonic Generations is a hotly anticipated title for old and new gamers alike, promising a return to the franchise’s classic roots of high-speed carnage and lightning-fast level navigation. The series, which celebrates its 20TH anniversary this year, has experienced a number of changes, tweaks and innovations over the years, some less successful than others.

Sega is now claiming that this Sonic game is the most anticipated in the history of the franchise, which they’re measuring by skyrocketing pre-order sales.

Here’s the statement from Alan Pritchard, one of the higher-ups at Sega:

"Sonic Generations is the ultimate title to cap off Sonic's 20th anniversary and we have put our full support behind it with a number of truly amazing initiatives. This year is a milestone for Sonic and we want to make sure this is the best title that Sonic fans, old and new, have been waiting for."

Sega didn’t release any official sales numbers, but thanks to a bit of math and information available at VG Chartz, I count roughly 100,000 pre-orders. That puts the game well below other titles, but is still an impressive haul for an often-troubled franchise. Sonic launches on November 1st, so there won’t be many new pre-orders rolling in.

The real question here is whether it’s actually a surprise that this is the most pre-ordered Sonic game in history. The last true Sonic title, Sonic the Hedgehog, was released for the original Xbox and PlayStation 2 in 2006. Subsequent titles have been spin-offs, Wii exclusives and direct downloads – Generations marks the first new cross-platform, on-disc title in years.

The world of pre-orders has changed dramatically since 2006; it stands to reason that any game released now would have more pre-orders than a previous iteration in the same series.

UK launch for OnLive dated

Gear up for OnLive, UK. A date's been set for its official launch in the region.

The cloud-gaming service is set to arrive on September 22nd, to coincide with the opening of the Eurogamer Expo, happening in London.

Said Steve Perlman, Founder and CEO for OnLive, "OnLive will utterly transform gaming in the UK. No discs, big downloads or specialized hardware needed. OnLive gives you the latest games instantly, anytime, anywhere on HDTV, PC, Mac, as we as iPad, Android tablets."

If you're attending the Expo, then you can get your hands on OnLive itself so you can check it out. If you're lucky enough, you can even take one home for free.

The UK service will also be fully integarted with that in North America. The California-based company has also expressed confidence that their technology can actually work on both Sony and Microsoft's consoles. Oh, and that it can definitely do everything that the Wii U does.
